• Is it possible to get a job in a high-demand company without having hobby projects?

  I was curious if the recruitment team at high-demand companies such as Google takes a lack of hobby projects into consideration when evaluating candidates. I'm a straight 40 hour/week programmer, who is lucky to spend an hour or two a month outside of work on anything programming related. I love hanging out on SO/SE during my breaks at work, and love answering questions, but after work I leave the programming world and go back to my life. I already understand that you don't need hobby projects to be a good programmer, but does this lack of hobby projects affect my chances getting a job at a company that always has a long list of candidates trying to get in?

On the other hand, inheritance does provide both polymorphism and a straightforward, terse way of delegating everything to a base class unless explicitly overridden and is therefore extremely convenient and useful. Delegation can often (though not always) be verbose and brittle. The most obvious and IMHO surest sign of inheritance abuse is violation of the Liskov Substitution Principle. According to my teacher, he says that to solve a problem we should go with steps to solve it like Create Algorithm (optional) Create a Datatable: By analyzing the problem, create main concepts in those problem as columns and the related issues in the main concept as rows. Create a Flowchart based on the Datatable. (when creating flow chart, think that you are in that situation and design it in your brain) By seeing the Flowchart, solve the problem. These steps should always consider by a programmer if he/she wants to become a Software designer (not programmer). Because the above approach gives an efficient way of finding solution to a problem even the problem is small. According to him, this way of approach also works in real time scenario's. My question is: Is this really an efficient way? please share also your thoughts. Keeping beside my question I just want to share some thoughts of my teacher with you who is a good mentor for me.

Right now I am using Illustrator, but I can never get the center of the character in the exact position, so it looks like it is moving around(even though its always in one place), while being loop through the sprite sheet. Is there any better tools that I can be using? Also what kind of tips would you give for working with a sprite sheet? Should I create each part of the character in individual layers (left arm, right arm, body, etc.) or everything at once? any other tips would also be helpful! thank you

• Are there any good guides for making mods for Minecraft?

  I've been coding in Java for 5 months at work now, and having past experience with programming in other languages, modifying existing code at Uni etc. I feel like I want to get started on (read: continue learning to program by) modding with minecraft. I know what I need, but not exactly how to do so. I once saw some good guides on the minecraft forum, but they all explained how to write in java, hows different classes in the code work etc. I'm more interested in how you decompile the code, write your own separate from the main 'trunk' of minecraft and then package it to install with a tool like 'Magic Loader'. My issue with these guides is that they always relied on being in windows, but I'm primarily a linux user, and the guides on the forums only seemed to assume you were on a Windows box. So is there a good 'walkthrough' for modding for Minecraft? Especially one where it assumes or at least allows for the fact you are in linux?

• New website, plans to go large. How do you protect yourself?

  I'm planning to create a new site that (in hopes) will make it to a decent state of popularity and use. I have made sites before, but they weren't serious, with any intended purpose other than personal and friend use. I've never been able to find a solid post on good steps to protecting yourself, and your site/idea before you start. This site will always be free, and will not be bringing it any revenue by ads or whatnot, but I plan to in the future and would want to make I'm in the clear legally for one. Do you need to copyright anything? Or anything of the same concept as copyright? Do I make an LLC to operate it under? Apologies for this extremely poorly written question, basically I want to be both legal, and I want to make sure nobody can just rip my idea or name(s).   When creating mobile (specially Android) application, I usually come to touch with similar pattern of working with data. Usually I need to fetch some remote data (covered by authorization process) to local cache. And on next request: Check networking Check presence of cache file Check version of cache file (if networking) Get new version and save cache (if networking and file not in cache, or outdated) Data store is no-SQL JSON Document-Based (and yes, I know about CouchDB Android version, but it doesn't fit my needs yet.) Process of authorizing to data source and code for check version of local cache is adapted to application. But the other code (handling network, saving cache, handling exceptions,...) is always the same. Is there any Data Store helper I can use, which provides functions I described above?

• Black screen after select installing on a Dell Inspiron 14z

  I'm trying to do a dual boot on my Dell Inspiron 14z notebook, but I always get a black screen after selecting Install Ubuntu. I've tried to add nomodeset and acpi_osi="Linux" to the boot options, but it doesn't change anything. The hardware: 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3517U processor (4M Cache, up to 3.0 GHz) 8GB2 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz 500GB 5400 RPM SATA HDD and 32GB mSATA SSD AMD Radeon HD7570M 1GB This question isn't duplicated. I've already tested all tips in the following question! My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it?

• Why is chunk size often a power of two?

  There are many Minecraft clones out there and I am working on my own implementation. A principle of terrain rendering is tiling the whole world in fixed size chunks to reduce the effort of localized changes. In Minecraft the chunk size is 16 x 16 x 256 as far as I now. And in clones I also always saw chunk sizes of a power of the number 2. Is there any reason for that, maybe performance or memory related? I know that powers of 2 play a special role in binary computers but what has that to do with the chunk size?

• Possible automated Bing Ads fraud?

  I run a website that generates life insurance leads. The site is very simple a) there is a form for capturing the user's details, life insurance requirements etc b) A quote comparison feature We drive traffic to our site using conventional Google Adwords and Bing Ads campaigns. Since the 6th January we have received 30-40 dodgy leads which have the following in common: All created between 2 and 8 AM Phone number always in the format "123 1234 1234' Name, Date Of Birth, Policy details, Address all seem valid and are unique across the leads Email addresses from "disposable" email accounts including dodgit.com, mailinator.com, trashymail.com, pookmail.com Some leads come from the customer form, some via the quote comparison feature All come from different IP addresses We get the keyword information passed through from the URLs All look to be coming from Bing Ads All come from Internet Explorer v7 and v8 The consistency of the data and the random IP addresses seem to suggest an automated approach but I'm not sure of the intent. We can handle identifying these leads within our database but is there anyway of stopping this at the Ad level i.e. before the click through.

  i screwed up big time. i changed the permission of /etc in ubuntu 11.10 by using following command sudo chmod 665 /etc now when ever i try to use sudo it gives the following error: sudo: can't open /etc/sudoers: Permission denied sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting any help will be greatly appreciated because i am new to ubuntu....i have already tried using su but it doesnt even login as root and even i give it the right password it always say Authentication Failure......i dont want to login as root coz its risky and even a newbie in linux like me is not stupid enough to have such control...i just want to use my sudo again......i have tried to go into recovery mode as well but i cant get in to recovery mode......HELP please!!!

• How to unit test image processing code?

  I'm working in image processing (mainly OCR) and I wonder how I should integrate unit tests in my development. I'm already using unit tests for more "common" type of code but when dealing with image processing code I'm not sure how to deal with it. This kind of code always need some image data input/output and mocking this is not obvious. For now I'm mostly doing integration tests but they take a while to run and I would like some ideas on how to break down this kind of code into unit tests so that I can run them more quickly.

• How do I allow all possible IPs for Gmail servers through my ufw firewall?

  I am currently using the following rule: ufw allow out from my_local_ip to any port 587 This is a little too lax for my liking. I would like to tighten it up and restrict it to only gmail's smtp server ip addresses, but they are always changing. I used to just wait until an outgoing email didn't make it to its destination, then check syslog for the ip address that was blocked, then add that to the ufw configure script. However, now I have a need for much more reliability. Is there any way to use smtp.gmail.com in ufw? I don't think so, but thought I would ask. Any other ideas? Thanks.

• Why does Network-Manager close when it cannot bind to any connection?

  When Network-Manager is not able to bind my Ubuntu to any connection, after a while it closes. The icon in the notification area (or indicator area) disappears, and it does not run any more. For instance this happens when there is really no ethernet network nor wireless one. Nonetheless this is a problem, since I often plug in my ethernet cable long after having booted my computer. As a hack I therefore hit Alt + F2, and type nm-applet. But I am not satisfied with this solution, because I think it is not intuitive enough. Is there a way to keep Network-Manager always running? I have Network-Manager 0.8.1 on Ubuntu 10.10, but this has been so for a long time, at least for one year.

  Shouldn't storage classes be taught early in a C class or book? I notice that a lot of books, even some of the better ones, covert it toward and end of the book and some books just add it as an appendix. I would teach it together with variables. This is so foundational and I think unfortunately many do not make it that far in a book. • How do I word my url so that it doesn't get blocked or appear spammy

  I'm creating a fairly large site. Will my links appear spammy if I use the same word as in the pathfile in the url? For example: www.example.com/apples/great-apple-recipes www.example.com/apples/fresh-apple-pie www.example.com/apples/delicious-apple-turnovers I do not want my link to appear spammy. But is it ok if the keyword is almost always the same as in the pathfile on a huge site? Does the pathfile count as part of the keyword? Also, how many words in total should a url (including pathfile etc...) be?

• Number of Classes in a Namespace - Code Smell?

  I have a C# library that's used by several executables. There's only a couple namespaces in the library, and I just noticed that one of the namespaces has quite a few classes in it. I've always avoided having too many classes in a single namespace because of categorization, and because subconsciously, I think it looks "prettier" to have a deeper hierarchy of namespaces. My question is: does anyone else consider it a "code smell" when a namespace has many classes - even if the classes relate to each other? Would you put in a lot of effort to find nuances in the classes that allows for subcategorization?
