First a bit of background: APIs on EnvDTE (DTE for short, since that’s the entry point service you request from the environment) was originally an API intended to be used by macros. It’s also called the automation API. Most of the time, this is a simplified API that is easier to work with, but which doesn’t expose 100% of what VS is capable of doing. It’s also kind of the “rookie” way of doing VS extensibility (VSX for short), since most hardcore VSX devs sooner or later realize that they need to make the leap to the “serious” APIs. The “real” VSX APIs virtually always start with IVs, make heavy use of uint, ref/out parameters and HResults. • Audio playback: part of song is skipped

  I am experiencing some problems with music playback after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10. Basically some of the songs stop playing after some time as if the song has ended. It's always the same songs and the same time. The weird thing that it happens with Clementine and Totem but VLC doesn't have this problem and it also plays as it should on Windows. I'm guessing there might be a problem with some library that's shared with by the first two applications. I don't know if it's relevant but the file format of the audio files is flac(don't know if the problem affects mp3, because I don't have many of them).

• How can you become a real programming polyglot?

  I work as a Java programmer, but C and C++ were always my favourite languages during studies. Unfortunatelly I don't have an opportunity to work with them as often as I would like to. As a result I sometimes get realized that I don't remember something quite important (today example: inherited protected members cannot be accessed in derived class constructors). The other example could be Python and Haskell which I enjoy using but don't use everyday. I got an idea to write my own wiki with easy to forget things (e.g. bash tricks & tips) but I find no sense in writing there everything I can forget about coolest programming languages. I know that the best way would be having a side projects (I want to start working on some C/C++ open source project after graduation), but currently I have to write my graduation thesis and work so I merely don't have time to do this. How do you stay sharp in languages that you don't use everyday?

• How to merge multiple internet connections into one

  My PC has 2 wired cards. Both gigalan. It also has 2 wireless cards. One broadcom with proprietary drivers and ralink with open software (which works much better than broadcom). My cellphone can share its connection wirelessly to my PC. But I also have a wired connection. So I have multiple connections that I can use to have internet. How can I merge 2 or more connections together and balance them to enjoy one unified internet experience that it is the sum of all internet connections connected to it. For example if I have an internet connection that offers 1024KB/Sec and another that offers 512KB/Sec and one small one that offers 128KB/Sec, after load balancing and merging all connections, I could download at a speed of 1664KB/Sec using all 3 internet connections as one for example. This question has always intrigued me.

  Summary: How do I remove folders mounted via bind or bindfs in /etc/fstab from appearing as devices in nautilus left column, the "places" view? detailed: Hello, I mount various directories from my data partition via bind in /etc/fstab in my home directory, eg like this: #using bind: /mnt/sda5/bazon/Musik /home/Bazon/Musik none bind,user 0 0 #or using bindfs bindfs#/mnt/sda5/tobi/Downloads /home/tobi/Downloads fuse user 0 0 (Background: /dev/sda5 mounted to /mnt/sda5 is my old home partition, but I do not want to mount it as a home partition, as I always have at least 2 Linuxes on the computer ...) That works well, but since 12.10 every one of those items is listed in Nautilus in the left column under "Devices". (Where normally USB drives appear, etc.) This is a waste of space (as I have many of such mounts...) and so I would like to have these mounts hidden, just as it was before in 12.04.   I'm working in image processing (mainly OCR) and I wonder how I should integrate unit tests in my development. I'm already using unit tests for more "common" type of code but when dealing with image processing code I'm not sure how to deal with it. This kind of code always need some image data input/output and mocking this is not obvious. For now I'm mostly doing integration tests but they take a while to run and I would like some ideas on how to break down this kind of code into unit tests so that I can run them more quickly.

• Chrome + Touchscreen + Unity (14.04)

  I've got a Dell 14R with touchscreen with Ubuntu 14.04. When I start Google Chrome by clicking the launcher with the TouchPad or with the Super+ combination, touch support in Chrome doesn't work. When I touch some element, it only gets focus, but doesn't activate the element (button, field, etc). And touch gestures don't work. In the other hand, if I start Chrome by touching the launcher button, touch scroll works in Chrome, even flicking to left does back to the previous page, etc. It doesn't makes sense to me, but is always like this, even across reboots. Anyone can confirm this? Any idea on how to fix?

• How to control / disable low level battery on bluetooth mouse

  I have a little problem with my Kesington Bluetooth Mouse on Ubuntu 12.10. Ubuntu 12.10 considers my bluetooth mouse battery as a system battery as if it was the main laptop battery (so I have two on the battery indicator, the main and the bluetooth one). When it runs low level, near to die, battery, my laptop acts as if it was the main battery and I must quickly stop bluetooth and continue on the touchpad if I want to work. Can anyone help me? Maybe I prefer to disable the battery control over the mouse, I don't care about it, I know it is fully charged, but Ubuntu always starts on 33% or less, I just want to work with it and when it will be battery-off I will recharge the batteries. The application is created on the NetBeans Platform and looks as follows, very neat and professional: Ann has been working on wrapping up the application for distribution and needs to include the JRE, since end users of the application don't necessarily have the JRE installed when they install the application. Several blogs and articles are available for creating and customizing installers for NetBeans Platform applications, as well as for bundling the JRE and other resources, though there are some gaps and inccuracies in those documents. However, now there's a new official tutorial, for the first time: http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-nbi.html The above is focused on Ant builds and Windows, specifically, and doesn't cover Maven scenarios, for which there'll be a separate tutorial soon. • Asus 1215n GPU driver/s don't give me a "full" OS experience

  I'm use to not having specific drivers from a manufacture on my laptop when running a Linux OS and that has always been fine - there's been adequate FOSS drivers for my needs and it hasn't ruined any of my OS experience. When I bought an Asus 1215n one of the upsides to the hardware seemed to be the switchable GPU that could give lots of performance or lots more battery life and would switch on-the-fly... with Windows of course. Seems that the Nvidia driver are crap and people advise not installing them. I have some sort of workaround for vga_switcharoo (?) and the on-the-fly nature of the GPUs has turned in to a manual one :( The worst bit though (aside from shorter battery life) is the web experience with HTML5. If I visit Mozilla's Web O'Wonder site I'm told I don't have WebGL working due to driver issues. This really blows - is it possible that proprietary drivers can now ruin my web experience too?!

  I have forgotten a slang programming term. This thing is an intentional bug or a decoy feature used as a distraction. An example usage, "Hey Bob, QA is doing a review today. Put a $THING into the module so they actually have a problem to find". This can be used negatively, to have a very obvious intentional flaw to discover as a distraction from a real problem. This can also be used positively. Its like how you always let rescue dogs 'find' a victim when searching a disaster area. It can also be used to verify that a QA process is actually catching flaws. What is the term I am looking for?

• What should a page's minimum word count be in order to be effectively indexed?

  I'm seeding a new site with hundreds of (high quality) posts, but since I am paying per word written, I'm wondering if anybody in the community has any anecdotal evidence as to how many words of content there should now be for a page to be counted just the same as a 700 word+ post, for example? I know there are always examples of pages ranking well with, for instance, 50 words or less of content, but does anyone have any strong evidence on what the minimum count should be, or has anyone read anything very informative in regards to this issue? • Changing the default program for an application

  I have installed MonoDevelop and after that Wine, but when I want to open an EXE file and then double click on it, it always runs with the Mono runtime, and if I want to run it with Wine, I should right click on it and choose Wine. Well, in properties and in Open With there isn't Wine that choose it for the default application... I have this problem for all types of applications and files. When the software you want to run is in the right click application (Open With), I can't choose it in properties for the default. In fact, I can't find it in properties, because it is in open with option in right click... What should I do to fix this problem? I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), 32 bit.

  Lately, I've been working a lot in PHP and specifically within the WordPress framework. I'm noticing a lot of code in the form of: if ( 1 == $options['postlink'] ) Where I would have expected to see: if ( $options['postlink'] == 1 ) Is this a convention found in certain languages / frameworks? Is there any reason the former approach is preferable to the latter (from a processing perspective, or a parsing perspective or even a human perspective?) Or is it merely a matter of taste? I have always thought it better when performing a test, that the variable item being tested against some constant is on the left. It seems to map better to the way we would ask the question in natural language: "if the cake is chocolate" rather than "if chocolate is the cake".

• How to fix "maximum number of clients reached"?

  About 30 Oct I ran recent updates for 12.04 64bit. No errors occurred. Next day when I booted computer most apps would not start or if started (eg Chrome) other app windows do not appear. Trying a command line start on most apps gives this message: "Maximum number of clients reachedError: cannot open display: :0" The 'error' part of message not always the same. Have tried to find solution on Ubuntu forums and other Linux web sites, but cannot find a solution. HELP please.

  So, I used to think that it would be a good idea to give the customer access to the issue tracking system, but now I've seen that it creates less than ideal situations, like: Customer judging progress solely on ticket count Developers denied to add issues to avoid customer thinking that there is less progress Customer appointing people on their side to add issues who don't always do a good job (lots of duplicate issues, insufficient information to reproduce, and other things that distract people from doing their real job) However, I think customers should have access to some indicators or proof that there is progress being done, as well as a right to report bugs. So, what would be the ideal solution to this situation?, specially, getting out of or improving the first situation described?

I have downloaded the Linux software of Canon for the 2200 series. I have downloaded the software of the Internet site of Canon. 6 Zip folder 3 deb. and 3 rpm. Always 1 for computer, 1 for scanner, 1 for other Thinks. I can load them on my PC and unpacking, but they do not install themselves. Does any person know what I have to do about this?

• New website, plans to go large. How do you protect yourself?

  I'm planning to create a new site that (in hopes) will make it to a decent state of popularity and use. I have made sites before, but they weren't serious, with any intended purpose other than personal and friend use. I've never been able to find a solid post on good steps to protecting yourself, and your site/idea before you start. This site will always be free, and will not be bringing it any revenue by ads or whatnot, but I plan to in the future and would want to make I'm in the clear legally for one. Do you need to copyright anything? Or anything of the same concept as copyright? Do I make an LLC to operate it under? Apologies for this extremely poorly written question, basically I want to be both legal, and I want to make sure nobody can just rip my idea or name(s). • What do you do when your naming convention clashes with your language?

  Okay, this is one of those little things that always bugged me. I typically don't abbreviate identifiers, and the only time I use a short identifier (e.g., i) is for a tight loop. So it irritates me when I'm working in C++ and I have a variable that needs to be named operator or class and I have to work around it or use an abbreviation, because it ends up sticking out. Caveat: this may happen to me disproportionately often because I work a lot in programming language design, where domain objects may mirror concepts in the host language and inadvertently cause clashes. How would you deal with this? Abbreviate? (op) Misspell? (klass) Something else? (operator_)

• Cannot use apt-get anymore because of one specific package

  No matter what type of apt-get I run (install, update, ...) I always get: dpkg: warning: files list file for package `libgdata-google1.2-1' missing, assuming package has no files currently installed. dpkg: warning: files list file for package `libntlm0' missing, assuming package has no files currently installed. (Reading database ... 354644 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace libntlm0 1.1-1 (using .../libntlm0_1.1-1_i386.deb) ... Unpacking replacement libntlm0 ... At this point apt-get hang. Does somebody know a way to fix this? Some days ago a line in source.list was removed (Google Chrome).

• What is the difference between Constant Vertex Attributes and Uniforms?

  According to the OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide: A constant vertex attribute is the same for all vertices of a primitive, and therefore only one value needs to be specified for all the vertices of a primitive. For uniforms the book states: ...any parameter to a shader that is constant across either all vertices or fragments (but that is not known at compile time) should be passed in as a uniform. I've always used uniforms for data that is constant for a primitive but now it appears that attributes can also be used in the same way. Is there more to constant vertex attribute than simply 'they are the same as uniforms'?

• Skype does not save configuration

  Hello, on ubuntu 10.10, I have recently started to experience this problem: for some reason skype wont save any settings except "sign in on startup" when skype starts and tries to sign in it is unsuccessful (it shows incorrect password, in red) every time. no matter if I have provided good password the last time. I always have to click to show contacts in groups, it does not remember it. Every time I have to go to options and update some notification settings. I know all these things should be "remembered" by skype - this problem started only recently. I don't recall fiddling with any permissions that could have likely caused that. Do you know what the problem might be? I tried uninstall (marking complete configuration removal) and install fresh, but it still remembers my username (why??) Can I find skype configuration files on the filesystem somewhere and change permissions for them - or even better - edit the files to set what I want..?
