• Managing time for success in the industry? [closed]

  So about a year ago I decided to pursue programming, specifically game development, as a career. I've always been a pretty avid gamer, from chucking turnips at Shy Guys' faces in the 90s, to downing Heroic Deathwing last week. Just recently though, I've been spending a LOT of time playing games and it's starting to show in my programming classes. Yesterday after a discouraging exam, I put my foot down and vowed to myself to keep the gaming:coding ratio in favor of the one that will hopefully pay the bills later on. I realize that knowing games well is a key part of being a good developer, but as I've been recently shown, there's a threshold of pixelated indulgence that must not be crossed if I'm ever going to land my dream job. I'm assuming many of you are quite enthusiastic about games as well. What advice would you give an aspiring programmer regarding time management? Thanks!! • How to fix "maximum number of clients reached"?

  About 30 Oct I ran recent updates for 12.04 64bit. No errors occurred. Next day when I booted computer most apps would not start or if started (eg Chrome) other app windows do not appear. Trying a command line start on most apps gives this message: "Maximum number of clients reachedError: cannot open display: :0" The 'error' part of message not always the same. Have tried to find solution on Ubuntu forums and other Linux web sites, but cannot find a solution. HELP please.

• Authenticating users for a website

  I'm working on a website and I want to validate that an individual is an employee at one of a large number of companies (probably using their company's email address, which I don't know before hand). The idea being some users are the general public and others are from these companies. And I need some way to authenticate that the users claiming to be employees are being honest while still having a friendly enough UI. I did an informal survey of people I know and the domains and emails will match in a majority of cases but they might not always match exactly so you might have a company with a website foo.com and an email [email protected] (although foobar.com did redirect back to foo.com). And while I can easily check that I'm not sure what other variations might be out there (maybe fooLA.com and email [email protected], etc.)

• Parallel.For Inconsistency results

  I am using VB.net to write a parallel based code. I use Parallel.For to generate pairs of 500 objects or in combination C(500,2) such as the following code; but I found that it didn't always generate all combinations which should be 124750 (shown from variable Counter). No other thread was runing when this code was run. I am using a Win-7 32 Bit desktop with Intel Core i5 CPU [email protected], 3.33 GHz and RAM 2GB. What's wrong with the code and how to solve this problem? Thank You. • Can't activate "mirror display"

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell latitude E6410, I have a problem when using the VGA output I always have dual monitor and can't switch on the "mirror display" toggle under systems setting/displays. It's rather annoying when having to do presentation with a video projector. the option "mirror display" is in light grey and I can"t tick the box. • How should I practice web server administration?

  Security students can practice their skills with software like OWASP's webgoat or something similar to "hackthissite". Students interested in Operating Systems can study MINIX and PintOS, write shell scripts or study POSIX system calls. What would be the best course of action in order to practice Server Administration? Is there any such software/resource available, teaching you such skills with small lessons, or it is totally up to you? I've practiced live FreeBSD server administration and management of VMs (CentOS, Gentoo, Debian) under VirtualBox, but I always feel that this isn't enough and I must push myself harder. So, what would you recommend? What has worked for you?

  I was told once that the best place to work as a developer is a company where the software you write is what makes the company money, whether it be software production or software services like consulting. This is opposed to a company where the software you write is just to support some other part of the business that makes the money, like manufacturing or finance. I know there are always exceptions, but in general, are employees treated better if they are on the front lines of profit generation, as opposed to being just another cost center? cost center (n.) - A cost center is part of an organization that does not produce direct profit and adds to the cost of running a company. Examples of cost centers include research and development departments, marketing departments, help desks and customer service/contact centers.

• Chrome + Touchscreen + Unity (14.04)

  I've got a Dell 14R with touchscreen with Ubuntu 14.04. When I start Google Chrome by clicking the launcher with the TouchPad or with the Super+ combination, touch support in Chrome doesn't work. When I touch some element, it only gets focus, but doesn't activate the element (button, field, etc). And touch gestures don't work. In the other hand, if I start Chrome by touching the launcher button, touch scroll works in Chrome, even flicking to left does back to the previous page, etc. It doesn't makes sense to me, but is always like this, even across reboots. Anyone can confirm this? Any idea on how to fix?

If I execute a script like: ::CONNECT SERVER1 SELECT @@VERSION; ::CONNECT SERVER2 SELECT @@VERSION; ::CONNECT SERVER3 SELECT @@VERSION; I'm sure I'm not the only person that would be surprised to see all three SELECT commands executed against SERVER3 and none executed against SERVER1 or SERVER2. • Skype does not save configuration

  Hello, on ubuntu 10.10, I have recently started to experience this problem: for some reason skype wont save any settings except "sign in on startup" when skype starts and tries to sign in it is unsuccessful (it shows incorrect password, in red) every time. no matter if I have provided good password the last time. I always have to click to show contacts in groups, it does not remember it. Every time I have to go to options and update some notification settings. I know all these things should be "remembered" by skype - this problem started only recently. I don't recall fiddling with any permissions that could have likely caused that. Do you know what the problem might be? I tried uninstall (marking complete configuration removal) and install fresh, but it still remembers my username (why??) Can I find skype configuration files on the filesystem somewhere and change permissions for them - or even better - edit the files to set what I want..?

• How to control / disable low level battery on bluetooth mouse

  I have a little problem with my Kesington Bluetooth Mouse on Ubuntu 12.10. Ubuntu 12.10 considers my bluetooth mouse battery as a system battery as if it was the main laptop battery (so I have two on the battery indicator, the main and the bluetooth one). When it runs low level, near to die, battery, my laptop acts as if it was the main battery and I must quickly stop bluetooth and continue on the touchpad if I want to work. Can anyone help me? Maybe I prefer to disable the battery control over the mouse, I don't care about it, I know it is fully charged, but Ubuntu always starts on 33% or less, I just want to work with it and when it will be battery-off I will recharge the batteries. • Changing the default program for an application

  I have installed MonoDevelop and after that Wine, but when I want to open an EXE file and then double click on it, it always runs with the Mono runtime, and if I want to run it with Wine, I should right click on it and choose Wine. Well, in properties and in Open With there isn't Wine that choose it for the default application... I have this problem for all types of applications and files. When the software you want to run is in the right click application (Open With), I can't choose it in properties for the default. In fact, I can't find it in properties, because it is in open with option in right click... What should I do to fix this problem? I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), 32 bit.

  I have forgotten a slang programming term. This thing is an intentional bug or a decoy feature used as a distraction. An example usage, "Hey Bob, QA is doing a review today. Put a $THING into the module so they actually have a problem to find". This can be used negatively, to have a very obvious intentional flaw to discover as a distraction from a real problem. This can also be used positively. Its like how you always let rescue dogs 'find' a victim when searching a disaster area. It can also be used to verify that a QA process is actually catching flaws. What is the term I am looking for?

• What do you do when your naming convention clashes with your language?

  Okay, this is one of those little things that always bugged me. I typically don't abbreviate identifiers, and the only time I use a short identifier (e.g., i) is for a tight loop. So it irritates me when I'm working in C++ and I have a variable that needs to be named operator or class and I have to work around it or use an abbreviation, because it ends up sticking out. Caveat: this may happen to me disproportionately often because I work a lot in programming language design, where domain objects may mirror concepts in the host language and inadvertently cause clashes. How would you deal with this? Abbreviate? (op) Misspell? (klass) Something else? (operator_)

• 12.04 - how to install alsa 1.0.27, to resolve dell sound card microphone echo issue to local speaker?

  Problem: Microphone in or Line in microphone audio is instantly captured and sinked to the local speaker, cause horrible echo problem About my system: (NO PulseAudio used (cause its always crash and unstable for my system/hardware, so auto killed and never used) I have ALSA 1.0.25 version running in Ubuntu 12.04 / 64-bit, with random kernel installed: kernel 3.5.0-17-generic kernel 3.8.x kernel 3.11.x But the echo problem is not resolved after trying all kernel. So, last option left now is to use ALSA 1.0.27 to see if that solves the problem. Is there any away to use ALSA 1.0.27 from any PPA to install in the Ubuntu 12.04? (without making it from source, to avoid breaking other packages and dependencies)

• Should I prevent search engines indexing tag/category pages?

  On my site, I currently have no special rules for search engines. It is a blog, statically generated using a Python program. When I search for some of my articles on Google, there is usually a tag or category page included in the results. Sometimes it even ranks ahead of the article itself. Obviously, as these links aren't always going to have the article on them, this aren't the results I want people to click on. So, I'm thinking of setting noindex on these pages. Is there any possible downside to doing so? Is this possible to do via robots.txt, or do I have to add it to all the relevant templates? All I can find for robots.txt are ways to stop the search engine crawling those pages, which isn't what I want - while I don't want them indexed, it's still the only surefire way to find all my blog posts.

• What should a page's minimum word count be in order to be effectively indexed?

  I'm seeding a new site with hundreds of (high quality) posts, but since I am paying per word written, I'm wondering if anybody in the community has any anecdotal evidence as to how many words of content there should now be for a page to be counted just the same as a 700 word+ post, for example? I know there are always examples of pages ranking well with, for instance, 50 words or less of content, but does anyone have any strong evidence on what the minimum count should be, or has anyone read anything very informative in regards to this issue? • How do you show the desktop in a blink in Ubuntu?

  We know you can either click on the show desktop icon or use CTRL+ALT+D to ask Ubuntu to show the desktop. Unfortunately, this does not always show the desktop in one action. Sometime, and this is true for at least the last 4 version of the OS, it brings up first to the front all the windows, THEN, with a second click, show you the desktop. This is very annoying, as when you show the desktop it generally to quickly click on a shortcut. To understand what I'm talking about, open 7 windows, minimize some, bring some to the front, maximize one, then show the desktop. Then do that on Windows. You'll see the difference.

• How to merge multiple internet connections into one

  My PC has 2 wired cards. Both gigalan. It also has 2 wireless cards. One broadcom with proprietary drivers and ralink with open software (which works much better than broadcom). My cellphone can share its connection wirelessly to my PC. But I also have a wired connection. So I have multiple connections that I can use to have internet. How can I merge 2 or more connections together and balance them to enjoy one unified internet experience that it is the sum of all internet connections connected to it. For example if I have an internet connection that offers 1024KB/Sec and another that offers 512KB/Sec and one small one that offers 128KB/Sec, after load balancing and merging all connections, I could download at a speed of 1664KB/Sec using all 3 internet connections as one for example. This question has always intrigued me.
