  We're designing a new application and we ran into some architectural question when thinking about data ownership. we broke down the system into components, for example Customer and Order. each of this component/module is responsible for a specific business domain, i.e. Customer deals with CRUD of customers and business process centered around customers (Register a n new customer, block customer account, etc.). each module is the owner of a set of database tables, and only that module may access them. if another module needs data that is owned by another module, it retrieves it by requesting it from that module. so far so good, the question is how to deal with scenarios such as a report that needs to show all the customers and for each customer all his orders? in such a case we need to get all the customers from the Customer module, iterate over them and for each one get all the data from the Order module. performance won't be good...obviously it would be much better to have a stored proc join customers table and orders table, but that would also mean direct access to the data that is owned by another module, creating coupling and dependencies that we wish to avoid. this is a simplified example, we're dealing with an enterprise application with a lot of business entities and relationships, and my goal is to keep it clean and as loosely coupled as possible. I foresee in the future many changes to the data scheme, and possibly splitting the system into several completely separate systems. I wish to have a design that would allow this to be done in a relatively easy way. Thanks!

• Using MPI_Type_Vector and MPI_Gather, in C.

  Hi, I am trying to multiply square matrices in parallele with MPI. I use a MPI_Type_vector to send square submatrixes (arrays of float) to the processes, so they can calculate subproducts. Then, for the next iterations, these submatrices are send to neighbours processes as MPI_Type_contiguous (the whole submatrix is sent). This part is working as expected, and local results are corrects. Then, I use MPI_Gather with the contiguous types to send all local results back to the root process. The problem is, the final matrix is build (obviously, by this method) line by line instead of submatrix by submatrix. I wrote an ugly procedure rearranging the final matrix, but I would like to know if there is a direct way of performing the "inverse" operation of sending MPI_Type_vectors (i.e., sending an array of values and directly arranging it in a subarray form in the receiving array). An example, to try and clarify my long text : A[16] and B[16] are 4x4 matrices to be multiplied ; C[16] will contain the result ; 4 processes are used (Pi with i from 0 to 3) : Pi gets two 2x2 submatrices : subAi[4] and subBi[4] ; their product is stored locally in subCi[4]. For instance, P0 gets : subA0[4] containing A[0], A[1], A[4] and A[5] ; subB0[4] containing B[0], B[1], B[4] and B[5]. After everything is calculed, root process gathers all subCi[4]. Then C[16] contains : [ subC0[0], subC0[1], subC0[2], subC0[3], subC1[0], subC1[1], subC1[2], subC1[3], subC2[0], subC2[1], subC2[2], subC2[3], subC3[0], subC3[1], subC3[2], subC3[3]] and I would like it to be : [ subC0[0], subC0[1], subC1[0], subC1[1], subC0[2], subC0[3], subC1[2], subC1[3], subC2[0], subC2[1], subC3[0], subC3[1], subC2[2], subC2[3], subC3[2], subC3[3]] without further operation. • how do I use an enum value on a switch statement in C++

  I would like to use an enum value for my switch statment in C++. Is it possible to use the enum values enclosed in the "{}" as choices for the "switch()"? I know that switch() needs an integer value in order to direct the flow of programming to the appropriate case number. If this is the case, do I just make a variable for each constant in the 'enum' statment? • Using NHibernate's HQL to make a query with multiple inner joins

  The problem here consists of translating a statement written in LINQ to SQL syntax into the equivalent for NHibernate. • PHP shell_exec() - Run directly, or perform a cron (bash/php) and include MySQL layer?

  Sorry if the title is vague - I wasn't quite sure how to word it! What I'm Doing I'm running a Linux command to output data into a variable, parse the data, and output it as an array. Array values will be displayed on a page using PHP, and this PHP page output is requested via AJAX every 10 seconds so, in effect, the data will be retrieved and displayed/updated every 10 seconds. There could be as many as 10,000 characters being parsed on every request, although this is usually much lower. Alternative Idea I want to know if there is a better* alternative method of retrieving this data every 10 seconds, as multiple users (<10) will be having this command executed automatically for them. A cronjob running on the server could execute either bash or php (which is faster?) to grab the data and store it in a MySQL database. Then, any AJAX calls to the PHP output would return values in the MySQL database rather than making a direct call to execute server code every 10 seconds. Why? I know there are security concerns with running execs directly from PHP, and (I hope this isn't micro-optimisation) I'm worried about CPU usage on the server. The server is running a sempron processor. Yes, they do still exist. Having this only execute when the user is on the page (idea #1) means that the server isn't running code that doesn't need to be run. However, is this slow and insecure? Just in case the type of linux command may be of assistance in determining it's efficiency: shell_exec("transmission-remote $host:$port --auth $username:$password -l"); I'm hoping that there are differences in efficiency and level of security with the two methods I have outlined above, and that this isn't just micro-micro-optimisation. If there are alternative methods that are better*, I'd love to learn about these! :)

• JQuery/AJAX: Loading external DIVs using dynamic content

  I need to create a page that will load divs from an external page using Jquery and AJAX. I have come across a few good tutorials, but they are all based on static content, my links and content are generated by PHP. The main tutorial I am basing my code on is from: http://yensdesign.com/2008/12/how-to-load-content-via-ajax-in-jquery/ The exact function i need is as follows: Main page contains a permanent div listing some links containing a parameter. Upon click, link passes parameter to external page. External page filters recordset against parameter and populates div with results. The new div contains a new set of links with new parameters. The external div is loaded underneath the main pages first div. Process can then be repeated creating a chain of divs under each other. The last div in the chain will then direct to a new page collating all the previously used querystrings. I can handle all of the PHP work with populating the divs on the main and external pages. • Determining an object's variable name dynamically?

  Let's say I have some objects: ArrayList<SomeObject> list = new ArrayList<SomeObject>(); SomeObject A = new SomeObject(); SomeObject B = new SomeObject(); SomeObject C = new SomeObject(); SomeObject D = new SomeObject(); These constructors automatically add each object to the ArrayList so I can iterate over them but still maintain the variable names for direct access: public SomeObject(){ // init stuff here list.add(this); } But then, let's say I want to output some debug info, and iterate through list and print out the NAME of each object? How can I do that? Essentially, when "SomeObject A = new SomeObject();" is executed, I want to use reflection (if possible) to determine that this variable's name is "A" (a String) and either store that in the object when the constructor executes, or determine it dynamically through reflection when referencing this object with the variable named "A". Does that make sense? How can I do this? Thanks!

• Looking for PyQt4 embeddable terminal widget

  I wrote an application that, among other things, launches some "backend" processes to do some stuff. These subprocesses are very likely to fail or have unexpected behavior since they have to operate in quite hard conditions, so I prefer to give full control over them to the operator. NOTE: I am running these processes using a subprocess module based class instead of QProcess to have some more control functionality over the running process. At the moment, I'm using a QPlainTextEdit widget to which I append standard output/error from the subprocess, plus some buttons to quickly send some common signals (INT, STOP, CONT, KILL, ..), but: In some cases it would be useful to send some input too. Although it could be done with a text input box, I would prefer using something more "professional" Of course, there is no direct way to interpret special control characters, such as color codes, cursor movement, etc.. I had to implement an auto-scroll management of the console, but it is not guaranteed 100% to work nicely (sometimes the scroll locking doesn't work as expected, etc.) So: does anyone know something I could use to accomplish these needs? I found qtermwidget but it seems more oriented on handling a shell process (and the Python bindings seems to let you run /bin/bash only) by itself than communicating with an already existing process I/O.

• Mobile site not rendering mobile within iframe

  I'm launching a mobile version of an existing corporate web application that currently loads in an iframe for corporate authentication purposes. When accessing the web app's direct link from a mobile device, it displays beautifully. The problem is that when accessing through the iframe, the site doesn't seem to scale correctly and it looks more like I'm accessing the desktop version of the site. Any suggestions on how make the site within the iframe recognize the mobile device's width and adjust appropriately? I've tried setting the viewport within the HTML and CSS of the site being loaded and even then I'm not getting the change I expect on my iPhone. I haven't had the opportunity to test an Android yet but within our company, iOS is the most important. Some of snippets of code I have tried are listed below. I've also tried 480px and device-width (which I believe I can't access because the iframe is a different domain). Unfortunately, modifying the iframe page and settings are not an option. Also, Javascript cannot be used as a solution for other reasons. Within HTML of web app site: <meta name="viewport" content="width=320px, initial-scale=1.0, user-scalable=no" /> Within CSS of web app site: @viewport { width: 320px; } The above CSS does not seem to render even when not used in device specific @media code.

• C# Reflection StackTrack get value

  I'm making pretty heavy use of reflection in my current project to greatly simplify communication between my controllers and the wcf services. What I want to do now is to obtain a value from the Session within an object that has no direct access to HttpSessionStateBase (IE: Not a controller). For example, a ViewModel. I could pass it in or pass a reference to it etc. but that is not optimal in my situation. Since everything comes from a Controller at some point in my scenario I can do the following to walk the sack to the controller where the call originated, pretty simple stuff: var trace = new System.Diagnostics.StackTrace(); foreach (var frame in trace.GetFrames()) { var type = frame.GetMethod().DeclaringType; var prop = type.GetProperty("Session"); if(prop != null) { // not sure about this part... var value = prop.GetValue(type, null); break; } } The trouble here is that I can't seem to work out how to get the "instance" of the controller or the Session property so that I can read from it.

• Can't grab foreign key during after_create callback because it doesn't exist yet!

  I have some models all linked together in memory (parent:child:child:child) and saved at the same time by saving the top-most parent. This works fine. I'd like to tap into the after_create callback of one of the children to populate a changelog table. One of the attributes I need to copy/push into the changelog table is the child's foreign_key to it's direct parent, but it doesn't exist at the time after_create fires!?! Without the after_create callback, I can look in the log and see that the child is being saved before it's parent (foreign key blank) then the parent is inserted... then the child is updated with the id from the parent. The child's after_create is firing at the right time, but it happens before Rails has had a chance to update the child with the foreign_key. Is there any way to force Rails to save such a linkage of models in a certain order? ie.parent, then child (parent foreign_key exists), then that child's child (again, foreign_key is accessible) etc. ?? If not, how would I have my routine fire after a record is created AND get the foreign_key? Seems a callback like this would be helpful: after_create_with_foreign_keys

  I need to visualize a relatively large graph (6K nodes, 8K edges) that has the following properties: Distinct Clusters. Approximately 50-100 Nodes per cluster and moderate interconnectivity at the cluster level Minimal (5-10 inter-cluster edges per cluster) interconnectivity between clusters Let global edge overlap = The edge overlaps caused by directly visualizing a graph of Clusters = {A, B, C, D, E}, Edges = {Pentagram of those clusters, which is non-planar by the way and will definitely generate edge overlap if you draw it out directly} Let Local Edge Overlap = the above but { A, B, C, D, E } are just nodes. I need to visualize graphs with the above in a way that satisfies the following requirements No global edge overlap (i.e. edge overlaps caused by inter-cluster properties is not okay) Local edge overlap within a cluster is fine Anyone have thoughts on how to best visualize a graph with the requirements above? One solution I've come up with to deal with the global edge overlap is to make sure a cluster A can only have a max of 1 direct edge to another cluster (B) during visualization. Any additional inter-cluster edges between cluster A - C, A - D, ... are disconnected and additional node/edges A - A_C, C - C_A, A - A_D, D - D_A... are created. Anyone have any thoughts?

• Php header('Location") error

  I'm having some difficulty with my php coding. I have 3 files, add.php, lib.php, and view.php I created a simple form, and when the user clicks submit, it should direct them to the view.php where it will display the database. Now I'm having a couple issues I can't seem to resolve. when the user clicks submit and the fields are blank or there is an error no entry should be made into the view page (or database)...however when I click submit a blank entry is made into the database. ALSO if i click "enter product" from the top menu bar anytime I click it, it causes a blank entry into the database. I can't figure out why that's happening. My next issue is with the header('Location') and my browser says: "Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at lib.php:13) in add.php on line 16" However if I click submit on my form it goes away. • DB Strategy for inserting into a high read table (Sql Server)

  Looking for strategies for a very large table with data maintained for reporting and historical purposes, a very small subset of that data is used in daily operations. Background: We have Visitor and Visits tables which are continuously updated by our consumer facing site. These tables contain information on every visit and visitor, including bots and crawlers, direct traffic that does not result in a conversion, etc. Our back end site allows management of the visitor's (leads) from the front end site. Most of the management occurs on a small subset of our visitors (visitors that become leads). The vast majority of the data in our visitor and visit tables is maintained only for a much smaller subset of user activity (basically reporting type functionality). This is NOT an indexing problem, we have done all we can with indexing and keeping our indexes clean, small, and not fragmented. ps: We do not currently have the budget or expertise for a data warehouse. The problem: We would like the system to be more responsive to our end users when they are querying, for instance, the list of their assigned leads. Currently the query is against a huge data set of mostly irrelevant data. I am pondering a few ideas. One involves new tables and a fairly major re-architecture, I'm not asking for help on that. The other involves creating redundant data, (for instance a Visitor_Archive and a Visitor_Small table) where the larger visitor and visit tables exist for inserts and history/reporting, the smaller visitor1 table would exist for managing leads, sending lead an email, need leads phone number, need my list of leads, etc.. The reason I am reaching out is that I would love opinions on the best way to keep the Visitor_Archive and the Visitor_Small tables in sync... Replication? Can I use replication to replicate only data with a certain column value (FooID = x) Any other strategies?

However I'd like to design this as generic as possible, for generic ComplexCls. Note that the exact ComplexCls is known at the moment of using this code, only the algorithm shd be generic. I know it can be done using (direct) reflection but is there other solution? Let me know if the question is not clear enough. (probably isn't). [EDIT] Basically, what I need is this: having myClsList, I need to specify a DataSource (ComplexClsList) and a field from that DataSource (Fld1) that will be used to populate my SomeField

• Combining mousedown and mousemove events together with Javascript (JQUERY?)

  Dear experts, I would like to combine a the mousedown and mousemove and mouseup events together. Basically the application of this would be making a UI for selecting elements. Like selecting icons in windows when the mouse is clicked down and as you move it, a dotted border dynamically moves with it. I know this is possible with the predefined UI of Jquery. But I am building a web application that requires the integration of this and would like to know the technique. The borders does not move dynamically as expected. Maybe my logic is entirely messed up. If anyone could point me the the right direction that would be great. THanks in advance.

My idea was to use CSS to show the TAB over the relevant Navigation menu item based on the URL. However, one URL always changes, so I wanted to somehow use an ifelse statement. • Could not import Django settings into Google App Engine

  Hello all you Google App Engine experts, I have used Django a little before but am new to Google App Engine and am trying to use it's development web server with Django for the first time. I don't know if this is relevent but I previously had Django 1.1 and Python 2.6 on my Windows XP and even though I have uninstalled Python 2.6 there is still a folder and entries in the registry. I have followed the instructions from Google but when I browse to the GAE developemnt web server it cannot find my settings (details below). Any hints gratefully received. • In Email, Image (img) Source (src) Tags are rewritten as relative links. How to fix?

  I'm working on sending out an html based email, and every time it sends the image src tags and some of the anchor href tags are modified to be relative url's. Update 2: This is happening between when the body of the email is generated and sent and when it arrives in my inbox. Update: I am using Postfix on a LAMPP server. In addition, I am using Zend_Mail to send the emails out. • Handling Errors from HttpWebRequest.GetResponse

  Hey experts - I'm having a ridiculous time trying to get an SMS API working (ZeepMobile, if you're interested) with .NET... I've been around .NET for a few years, but with all this social networking and API stuff, I need to get into the HttpWebRequest a bit. I'm new at it, but not completely new; I was able to hook up my site to Twitter without too much fuss (ie, I was able to modify someone's code to work for me). Anyways, the way their API works is to send an SMS message, you send them a POST and they respond back to you. I can send it just fine, but every time I do, rather than echo back something helpful to figure out what the error is, I get the Yellow Error Page Of Death (YEPOD) saying something to the effect of "The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request." This occurs on my line: '...creation of httpwebrequest here...' Dim myWebResponse As WebResponse myWebResponse = request.GetResponse() '<--- error line Is there any way to simply receive the error from the server rather than have the webserver throw an exception and give me the YEPOD? Or better yet, can anyone post a working example of their Zeep code? :) Thanks!
