• Brightness not working; HP Pavilion Dv6; ATI Radeon HD6770M

  I am new to Ubuntu, but so far I am loving it. I was always unable to change my brightness since I installed Ubuntu, but I figured that installing the latest ATI driver for my graphics card would work. I did, but I still can't change the brightness. The slider goes up and down, but the brightness stays the same (on full). I have switchable graphics, an ATI Radeon HD 6770M, and an Intel integrated GPU. Since I am new to Linux, I am not familiar with terminal, so you will have to spell everything out for me, including if you need more information and how to get it. Thanks.

• Learn a NoSQL or become a badass with traditional RDMS - Where is/will the work be?

  I'm half way through my MSc and am thinking about my dissertation which I get 3 months to work on full time. Im very comfortable with the traditional Relational Database, the question is should I work on a project where I get a good understanding of something like Cassandra, or should I really push my RDMS knowledge to the limit. Getting great at something like MySQL is a solid safe option, will there really be much work for me with Cassandra in my tool belt? I would love to do either.... Thanks for your opinions and advice.

• How to manage permissions on a shared volume for OSX and ubuntu

  On my mac I'm using an unjournaled HFS partition to share files between OSX 10.8 and Ubuntu 12.04. It was a nice thought at first, because Time Machine will automatically backup the volume in OSX, but I soon noticed that OSX and Ubuntu mess with the permission in a way that makes things messy for me. So, in order to fully view and change files, I keep using chmod to apply permissions that which will allow me to fully use a document. But I don't understand why I have to keep applying changes over and over. Is possible to set some kind of permission permanently so that both operating systems will respect permanently? I guess 777 will work, but I thought that this is not a smart thing to do. But as long as 'others' does not get full access (third seven), I see a lock icon on the file in ubuntu.

• ACER Aspire V5-171 compatibility

  Im thinking about buying a V5-171 with an i3 in it. Im worried about secure boot though. I heard some people cant turn it off and it wont work... Im not shy to open it up and replace the hard drive with Ubuntu preinstalled. Im also worried about the wifi working. I have heard its been dropping out for people quite a bit along with also the trackpad not working. I dont mind replacing the wifi stick (if its even possible?) inside. Is the GPU (HD4000 i think) supported in ubuntu with full video accel? Thanks!

  I have found problem in my shader code, which I dont´t know how to solve. I want to rewrite this code without "ifs" tmp = evaluate and result is 0 or 1 (nothing else) if (tmp == 1) val = X1; if (tmp == 0) val = X2; I rewite it this way, but this piece of code doesn ´t word correctly tmp = evaluate and result is 0 or 1 (nothing else) val = tmp * X1 val = !tmp * X2 However if I change it to: tmp = evaluate and result is 0 or 1 (nothing else) val = tmp * X1 if (!tmp) val = !tmp * X2 It works fine... but it is useless because of "if", which need to be eliminated I honestly don´t understand it Posted Image . • How do I fix gnome shell themes?

  This is my fifth full format and install of Ubuntu in under a month. I finally have my Gnome 3 desktop working again, but again, the Gnome shell themes is not select-able. I have asked the question of how to fix this common issue before, but I have seen no positive resolution. Does anybody know of a simple fix? This is a common issue and I have seen hundreds of postings related to it, but other users only seem to get half-way answers also and it goes unresolved. Would it be advisable to completely purge Gnome desktop and reinstall? If so how would I do this? I cannot use any extensions if the shell is not working, so I am desperately seeking resolution for the issue. Thanks in advance.

What are some good questions to get the conversation rolling in a sit down mentor/mentee session? • Volume setting isn't remembered after restart/shutdown

  This is my first time here and I'm new to linux and also to Ubuntu. I've installed first version 11.10 and there was some problems with the unity dock and also the problem with the volume not being remembered after restart or shutdown. I'm using dualboot with Windows 7. Ubuntu was installed after windows. I have 2 sound cards. One is onboard, on the motherboard, and the other is external, an E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 sound card. The last one is my primary sound card and I've choosed it as default output sound card. I've upgraded to 12.04 hopeing that this was fiex but even in this version the OS doesn't keep the volume where it was last time. The big problem is that sometimes I forget about this problem and start music and it starts at full volume and soon I think I will die of heart attack. Is there a way to make it remember or at least to tell him to start at a specific volume not at 100%?

  Ads in free Android apps might be annoying but you probably never imagined they were radically draining your battery. New research from Purdue University and Microsoft highlight just how much ad-driven apps tank your battery life. What did they find? That poorly designed ad-modules in free ad-driven applications are terrible at conserving energy. In popular applications like Angry Birds and Free Chess 70% of the energy the application consumed was used to drive the ads. They also surveyed other applications and found that ad-driven apps weren’t alone in excessive battery use–the New York Times app, for example, spent 15% of its battery consumption on tracking and background tasks. • Repairing or recreating a bootloader on a multi-booting EFI GPT system

  Reinstalling Ubuntu messed up my boot loader so I I tried to fix it with boot repair. It detected my OSX installation and asked about removing the "separate boot/EFI". It also said my partition was full despite the fact that it wasn't and asked me to remove stuff. I declined both and proceeded. It's been stuck at the "purge and reinstall the GRUB" stage for half an hour. Is this typical, bearing in mind I have a fast SSD and CPU? Is there a better way to re-install grub on a multi-booting UEFI system? Does my pastebin provide any insight?

• tor browser install ubuntu 14.04

  I have read the answers to other questions regarding the install/running of the tor browser. I have tried the answers given but still cannot get the tor browser to run on mine. I have ubuntu 14.04 and where it shows to start tor browser when I double click all I get is an open tab full of code. Anyone with suggestions I should try? I also tried downloading from tor project did not work and tried the install using command in the terminal and it also did not work. When I had windows I had no problem with the install or the tor browser running. I really like ubuntu better this is the only thing that I am having trouble with. PLEASE HELP!!!

• .mdf Database Filetype

  Would somebody be kind enough to correct my understanding of the following (if incorrect)? Microsoft's .mdf file-type can be used by both the LocalDB and the full Server database engines (apologies if engine is not the correct word?). The .mdf file does not care which of these two options are accessing it - so you could use either to access any given .mdf file, provided you had permissions and password etc. The LocalDB and the SQL Server are two options that can be interchangeably chosen to access .mdf files depending on the application requirements. Appreciate any clarification. Thanks

Create a console app Add reference to Microsoft.SharePoint.dll Hit F5, curse because I forgot to set the framework to .NET 3.5 Right click properties, change framework to .NET 3.5 Hit F5, curse again because I get a FileNotFoundException, because I forgot to make it a x64 app. Finally on my way, 2 minutes later – which has added to atleast 2 hours over the last year.   Well, no more! • Ubuntu 13.10 and Dell Inspiron 7520 SE (Intel 4000 and ATI radeon HD 7730m)

  I installed 13.10 and i have problems with my display. Everything else works fine. I cant control my brightness. I thought the graphics driver is the problem. So i went to software updates, switched to another driver (proprietary) and the Ubuntu screen went black and i wasn't able to boot either. I cant use my lap with such low brightness. Then i reinstalled 13.10 again, This time full hdd reset. Same problem occurred. I grabbed radeon hd7730m for Linux x64 from the amd site, installed it, and the screen went black with only the "x" cursor showing on the next boot. What should i need to do to make my brightness work and stabilize graphic cards as mine is switchable graphics type.
