• Poor backlink profile - search rankings not updated for 2+ months

  I am carrying out some work on a website that is a PR2 with a few good quality, relevant backlinks (PR4-6). It has a presence on Twitter that is updated regularly, a Google Places listing, and listings on some decent directories (Qype etc). The site was rebuilt into Drupal 7 two months ago, with all the basics done - URL rewriting, XML Sitemap submitted to Google, and most importantly, good quality, structured content. I've noticed that Google is still showing "old" URL's from the previous version of the site that was ditched 8 weeks ago. I think the site may be penalised under the Penguin update, as a previous SEO company created many low quality links from link farms/directories. My question is what the correct way to deal with this is. Bing Webmaster Tools can "disavow" links, and I guess I can attempt to contact the link farms to have them removed. I've already submitted a request to Google to request that we have the penalty removed as we're trying to tidy up a bad history. We submit updated sitemaps to Google and Bing daily, and have built some further decent quality, relevant links. Is there anything further I can do?

• Alexa indexing browsing history?

  We have this test.php sitting around in a forgotten folder. It is a script which just sends an email to our site admin. We never had a page linking to it. It is not indexed by Google. It does not exist in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. But every now and then it gets crawled by ia_archiver. I wonder how it got indexed. Could it be because of the Alexa toolbar installed on our computer? Does Alexa index our personal browsing history?

• Extracting meta tags attribute using wget [migrated]

  I have a file having some URLs per line. I need to extract the "keywords" present in the tags i.e. if there is meta tag for "keywords" then i want to get "content" value for it. Example: if the web-page has this meta-tag then for that URL i want "wikipedia,encyclopedia" to be extracted. One approach is to download the web-page using "wget" and then parse it using some standard HTML parser. I was wondering is there any better way to do this without downloading the entire web-page.

  I'm looking to use an .htaccess file to use mod_rewrite to switch the protocol from http:// to https:// when someone hits my website. For instance, once someone goes to: http://www.mywebsite.com/ I'd like the browser to switch to: http*s*://www.mywebsite.com/ The same goes for the http://mywebsite.com/ - https://mywebsite.com This is the following code I've been using and I've experienced some odd things so if anyone could provide me with information if this is the right way to do it, or if you have a better way, please provide it. • Are webhosts that require NS instead of a CNAME common?

  I've just signed up with a webhost (which I prefer not to name) and I'm reasonably happy with it. The only nit was when I was ready to put a site online and I asked the support line to what name I should point my 'www' CNAME to. They responded that they don't do that and I need to set my domain's NS records for the hosting to work. "Why would you ever want to do it that way? Our service to you includes DNS and our servers are probably much better than the one your registrar provides." This was a bit of surprise as all of the other webhosts I've worked with happily support this. I've set up (eg) gallery.myfriend.example for friends by having them configure their DNS to CNAME 'gallery' to the name of a shared server at a webhost and the webhost does name-based hosting for 'gallery.myfriend.example'. (Of course, if the webhost ever tells me I'm being moved from A.webhost.example to B.webhost.example, it would be my responsibility to change where the CNAME points. Really good webhosts would instead create myname.webhost.example for the IP of whichever server my stuff happens to be on, so I'd never have to worry about keeping my CNAME up to date.) Is my impression correct, that most webhosts will happily support a service that begins with a CNAME hosted elsewhere, or is it really more common that webhosts will only provide a service if they control the DNS service too?

  DETAILS I have a website that's content is in English. It is a niche website with a global market. However I would like users to be able to find the website using their own language. The scenario I envision is that the searcher is looking for the English content, but is searching in their own language. An example could be someone looking for "downloadable English crosswords." MY IDEAS Buy ccTLDs and have them permanently redirect to subdirectories on domain.com. The subdirectories would contain html sitemaps in the target language e.g.-Redirect domain.fr to domain.com/fr OR perhaps it would be better to maintain domain.fr as an independent site in the target language with the html sitemap linking to pages on domain.com ? QUESTION Are the above methods good/bad? What are some other ways I can optimize SEO for foreign languages?

• Yahoo media player not working with Ruby on rails

  I have a yahoo media player embedded in my webpage. I am currently using Ruby on Rails to create/edit my web page. When i click the play button next to a track the YMP waits a while and then goes to the next track without playing the first one. I then get a warning on my second (last) track that its file could not be found. Does anyone has a better recommendation for an audio player or a way to fix this one?

  Using the mod_form_auth module in Apache HTTPD 2.4.3, I am looking for a way to have the user redirected to their original desired target after completing a login. That is, if I have a <Location /protected> ... form auth config here </Location> the user might browse to /protected/a, or to protected/b. In either case, they will be presented with the login form. However, as far as I can see, I must specific a single 'success' URL. I'm wondering if I'm missing some Apache feature that would allow me to, for example, cause the redirect to the login form go to something like: https://login.html?origTarget=/protected/a via some syntax on the AuthForLoginRequiredLocation statement?

• Source code not matching uploaded HTML file

  I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but i'm having a hugely frustrating problem with Coda and my website (i'm not sure which one is causing the issue) I'm using Coda to make changes to my website, Coda uses built in FTP to save changes to your web page. So when you hit Save, it uploads the new file. I've been using Coda for months and never had a problem until now. I am making changes in the html of my index.php and hitting save, it's successfully uploading the file but no changes are reflected in the source code in ANY browser. I even logged into cPanel on my website, ie. www.example.com:2082 and looked at the file - the changes have been made successfully. But the actual webpage in browser's source code, no changes?? I have tried adding which made no difference. Interestingly i make changes to style.css and the changes are instant. I have emptied the cache on all of my browsers but i'm still having an issue. Does this sound like a Coda problem or has anyone heard of such a thing?

• SSL issue and redirects from https to http

  I have a site www.example.com for which i purchased SSL cert and installed. And it was working fine, I also have a subdomain with app.example.com which was not on SSL. Both www.example.com and app.example.com are on same IP address. At later we decided to put SSL only on app.frostbox.com and then i configured SSL with app.frostbox.com and it worked fine, Now the issue is that Google is indexing my site as https://www.example.com/ and when users hits the web , Invalid security warning is issued and when user allow security issue they are shown my app.example.com contents. Note: I have my SSL configuration files in /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf The contents of the ssl.conf are below. http://pastebin.com/GCWhpQJq NOTE: I tried solutions in .httaccess but none of those worked. • Is there any good reason I would want my website to be framed?

  I'm building a website that's not security-critical in any way at all, so having somebody put a page in an <iframe> is not particularly dangerous to its users. However, as my website doesn't have script plugins that will be used anywhere else, is there any reason why I shouldn't just apply: X-Frame-Options: Deny to every page on my website? Is there any valid reason for any other website to embed mine? I've seen plenty of content-stealing ones and attempts to hijack user accounts, but never an actual good usage of frames that's not an explicit feature of the website.

  I am probably missing something obvious, but I do not understand when I query: start.date = DATE_START, end.date = DATE_END, dimensions = c("ga:pagePath","ga:previousPagePath"), metrics = c("ga:pageviews"), filters = mypageofinterest, table.id = "ga:mytable", max.results=RESULTS my data return as expected, all of the previous pages including (entrance). However, when I modify the code to be nextPagePath start.date = DATE_START, end.date = DATE_END, dimensions = c("ga:pagePath","ga:nextPagePath"), metrics = c("ga:pageviews"), filters = mypageofinterest, table.id = "ga:mytable", max.results=RESULTS only one line of data are returned; the pagepath and nextpagepath are identical with itself. I replicated this result using the Query Explorer. What am I missing or doing wrong? I was expecting to see a large number of "next" pages, including (exit). Thanks in advance.

But only in Firefox, Safari, Chrome etc, not in Internet Explorer 8. Q1. Who(&When) decided that All headings should go upto h6, and not h4 or h7? Q2. Why h7 -h9 work perfect in all major browsers, except IE8? Q3. What is the significance for Bing,Yahoo and Googld in terms of recognition or headings h1 ~ h9? obviously h1 is more important than 2, but do they differentiate between h5 and h6? or not anymore after h3?

• Usual Suspects: Typical 3rd Party Entities in E-Commerce [closed]

  I am doing some requirements/analysis for a web app that I'd like to build (Ruby/Java developer here). This web app would have a store front, shopping cart and would need to be totally compliant with all e-com best practices. It's amazing how much non-technical info comes up when you search for phrases like "how does e-commerce work", but very little comes up in the way of technical details. As such, I'm having extreme frustration finding answers to what I consider pretty straight-forward questions. I came here because I believe this question is not off-topic; if it is, please leave a comment as to why this question does not belong here and I will happily remove it myself (upvotes if your comment can point me to the correct place for this question!). So then: What 3rd parties will I need to work with to have a modern, web-compliant e-com site? So far I can account for a payment gateway provider like Authorize.net and an SSL certificate provider like Trustwave. Any others? What other standards besides PCI compliance will I be held to (besides governing laws, of course!)? Vulnerability scans: PCI compliance requires quarterly scans: if I'm a "Level 4" (low volume) Merchant does that still apply to me? Irregardless, my backend architecture is quite huge, with web servers, app servers, database, message brokers and more. Do each of these servers need to be scanned?!? If not what servers do need to get these quarterly scans? I usually hate to ask micro-questions inside of one large one, but these are so closely-related I just felt like asking them all separately would be spamming the site with too many petty questions.   Google has indexed the IP address of my site rather than the domain, so now I'm trying to set up a 301 redirect that will redirect the IP address and all subsequent pages to the domain. I currently have something like this in my .htaccess file (however don't think it's working correctly?): RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^12.34.567.890 RewriteRule (.*) (domain address)/$1 [R=301,L] I've used various redirect checker tools and keep getting the message: "... not redirecting to any URL or the redirect is NOT SEARCH ENGINE FRIENDLY" Am I doing something wrong or is there something else I should be trying? • over reporting in google analytics - social media stats

  I have a client and their traffic from social media reads thus: 80% from facebook 1% from Twitter This suggestsd they are not exploiting twitter at all and this was in my presentation but my boss took it out claiming twitter stats are under reported in google analytics. I can't substantiate this claim and wonder where she got this idea from. Can anyone shed light on this? A competitor is called "Box Maker" Can I target the keywords: "box maker" if my company is selling a tool to help you make boxes? Or is that disallowed?   Using Firebug to edit CSS, how do I save/export changes made to the CSS? TOOLS: Firefox, Firebug MAJOR UPDATE: If you know of a way to lock the forward/back/refresh on a FireFox tab, please let me know. Otherwise, I've given up on using FireBug/FireDiff as an IDE for CSS, it's nice, but lol... press backspace at the wrong time and ALL your work is gone... funny. So, really like the browser highlighting to CSS/HTML in Firebug. Know any good CSS editors that do this? Really had hope FireBug would work, but for now only see it as being good for ad-hoc inspection and test; meaning using it for what it's made for. UPDATES: @Lèse majesté: Just as an update, "Web Developer add-on" does let you edit CSS, but it does not let you edit/save CSS changes made by Firebug. Meaning you use Firebug to ID and maybe test changes, but it does not let you save the changes from Firebug. Here's a "how to" covering how to use them together: FF + FB + WD @Lèse majesté: Still playing around with FireDiff. It works okay, found one bug already (although I'm just working around it), and there's no "how to" I've been able to find, so I'm just trying every feature and clicking around... (for example, to export a diff you must be over the last item in the list, right click, and select as "Save Diff". The ".diff" is just a text file, no idea why at this point the ext is .diff.

  Hi! I have a domain, let's call it example.com, which has a subdomain, games.example.com. I maintain a games forum using phpbbseo which is located at games.example.com/forum. The problem is that the forum is not being crawled. I used Google's webmaster tools and tested that the page is seen by google. P.S. There is a link from games.example.com to games.example.com/forum. What can I do? How can I make google crawl my forum?
