  • Does dual-channel work only with an even number of RAM sticks?

    I have noticed that on the ASUS P5QL Pro motherboard the BIOS says "Dual Channel Asymmetric Mode" during POST. The motherboard has three 2GB Kingston ValueRAM 800 MHz DIMMs populated in the first 3 slots from the CPU socket. I have not run any benchmarks to verify that dual-channel is somehow being used, but I believed that dual-channel has to have an even number of sticks (and for triple channel, a multiple of 3). Another example is the Intel DX58SO motherboard; it has four DIMM slots, yet it's an LGA 1366 motherboard which does triple-channel. Apparently triple-channel still works with four DIMMs, instead of falling back to dual-channel. What does the BIOS' POST message mean in those case? Is dual-channel really used for the first two DIMMs, with the other one being an odd one in single-channel mode?

  • How do I get basic ProxyPass to work on Apache 2.2.17?

    I'm trying to get around the ERR_UNSAFE_PORT restriction in Chrome by making Apache reverse proxy other HTTP servers on the machine. I load mod_proxy with sudo e2enmod proxy I add ProxyPass /znc/ http://localhost:6667/ to my httpd.conf I restart Apache with sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart When I open up /znc/, I get 500 Internal Server Error.   • Cisco 678 Will Not Work using PPPoE - Possibly Because I Configured it Incorrectly..?

    I am attempting to configure a Cisco 678 because I am totally sick on my Actiontec. However, I am running into some problems. It seems as though the Cisco is able to train the line, but I am unable to ping out. I am all right at programming, but still learning a lot when it comes to being a system administrator. I apologize in advance if I did something ridiculous, or am attempting to configure this device to do something it was not designed to do. It is almost like I am not correctly configuring the device to grab it's IP using PPPoA (like my Actiontec.) The output from "show running" (below) makes me think this too.     I would like to write things like this in /etc/apt/sources.list: deb sftp://[email protected]/path other stuff When I try this, apt-get complains that there is no sftp method for apt: # apt-get update E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/sftp could not be found. Has anyone written a patch to add the sftp method for apt? All I could find in Google was this spec for Ubuntu. Thanks for your help.

  • Why does MTP work on one machine, but not another?

    I have two Dell computers, a laptop and a desktop. I reinstalled Windows XP home on both, from the same CD. Then I installed Service pack 3 and ran windows update. When I connect my Creative Zen media player to the desktop, the MTP software that is part of XP recognizes it, and I can copy file to and from it using Windows Explorer. But when I connect the same player with the same cable to the laptop, I can see it in Windows Explorer, but none of the folders that are visible via the desktop are available, and I can't copy anything to or from it. How can I get this working on the laptop?

    I have two rules set up to sort incoming bug reports. The first is specific to a single device: Apply this rule after the message arrives sent to SMS Distribution and with <source_device_number>: in the body move it to the BugReports\<source_device_number> folder ..and the second is a catch-all for everything else: Apply this rule after the message arrives sent to SMS Distribution move it to the BugReports folder For some reason though, the first rule never seems to act even though it's higher in the list. So for some reason an email like the following doesn't seem to get caught by the first rule: From: <SourceDeviceUID> To: SMS Distributor Subject: Message from <SourceDeviceUID> Message: <source_device_number>: Device encountered a problem. Details below... ...where <source_device_number> is an integer. The second rule works fine. But for some high-priority devices, I want them automatically sorted. Why might that first rule fail?

  • How to make Synaptics touchpad work better on Linux?

    I have Debian Squeeze currently installed on a Samsung N250 netbook with a Synaptics touchpad. These touchpads are, generally, good, and everything works perfectly on Windows. The support is extremely sucky on Linux through. Of course it has all the cool features like two-finger scrolling, but the cursor (or whatever is a replacement for cursor when scrolling) is trembling awfully. It trembles when I just keep the finger on touchpad, it shakes awfully if the finger is close to the top of touchpad, and when I'm scrolling with it (no matter with two fingers or one), the page shakes a lot too. None of this behavior is observed even in Windows XP with just the default drivers installed.   • In general, do 3rd-party laptop AC adapters / chargers work reliably?

    The AC adapters for my 2 dell laptops wore out very quickly. One supplies power but won't charge the battery (it's about 3 years old, the other is a bit newer). Both have worn through to the shielding around the notebook connector and look like they'll be unusable soon. Checking user reviews of the replacement adapter on Dell's own website, it appears they usually fail this fast. Apparently Dell does this deliberately to make money (their adapters sell for about 10-15 times what they cost to make). Same with replacement batteries. I can see there are plenty of much cheaper ($50 less) compatible AC adapters on eBay. Does anyone have experience with these? Naturally I'm nervous a crappy knock-off could fry my notebook, but has this ever actually happened to anyone recently? Has anyone had a good experience? Can anyone recommend a good online seller (who doesn't charge nonsensical shipping costs to Australia, preferably?)

    Hi. I am using a Microsoft wireless phone ear piece and I have had the receiver plugged into the USB port on the Left Hand side. I have been getting intermittent success with the signal. I have recently tried plugging it in to one of the ports on the top Right Hand side, and it seems that I am getting a better signal. Is there a difference between the ports? Thanks.

  • How do I format this regex so it will work in fail2ban?

    I've just installed fail2ban on my CentOS server in response to an SSH brute force attempt. The default regular expressions in fail2ban's sshd.conf file do not match any entries in audit.log, which is where SSH seems to be logging all connection attempts, so I am trying to add an expression that will match. The string I am trying to match is as follows: type=USER_LOGIN msg=audit(1333630430.185:503332): user pid=30230 uid=0 auid=500 subj=user_u:system_r:unconfined_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023 msg='acct="root": exe="/usr /sbin/sshd" (hostname=?, addr=<HOST IP>, terminal=sshd res=failed)' The regular expression I am attempting to use is: ^.*addr=<HOST>, terminal=sshd res=failed.*$ I've used regextester.com and regexr to try to build the regex. The testers give me a match for this regex:^.*addr=\d{1,3}\.\d{1,3}\.\d{1,3}\.\d{1,3}, terminal=sshd res=failed.*$ but fail2ban-regex complains if I don't use the <HOST> tag in the regex. However, using ^.*addr=<HOST>, terminal=sshd res=failed.*$ gives me 0 matches. At this point, I am totally stuck and I would greatly appreciate any assistance. What am I doing wrong in the regex I am trying to use?

    My Firefox upgraded itself automatically to version 3.6, and I found that IE tab is broken there. Apparently IE tab is known to be broken in this version. Are there any known workarounds such as these? a different plugin with the same functionality a way to tell FF to behave in some legacy or compatibility mode for certain plugins a new version of IE tab In the meanwhile I'm glad that Chrome's current release supports plugins, and IE tab works there.

  • How Will Mac OS X Snow Leopard Upgrade Work?

    I am relatively new to Mac OS X. I got my MacBook in January, and I have never experienced a new version of the operating system. I am wondering if I should simply upgrade my install to Snow Leopard. I come from Windows where it is advised to do a complete reformat. I would rather not do this, however, and I have a feeling that due to Mac OS X' POSIX based nature, it might actually not be all that bad if I upgrade. I guess if things end up screwing up I can simply go ahead and reformat, but I am wondering what it is like to upgrade systems running Mac OS X. I wouldn't want my Snow Leopard installation to be somehow deficient due to certain inconsistencies within the system.

    I recently had a spamming incident and got listed on a blacklist. I have rectified the issue, removed from the blacklist, but my IP reputation is now classified as a high volume sender. What is the best way to rectify this? I have an additional IP address. I am thinking configure my server to make outbound SMTP connections using the other IP. My questions are: How long does it take for my reputation to stabilize again? How do I configure my server/mailserver to use a specified outbound IP?
