  At first I must apologize, because I am not sure if this question is valid for webmasters topic. I deal with the problem as being webmaster, however, i think this question is more related with marketing. Nevertheless, I was searching for marketing stack-overflow at meta stack-overflow and did not find such page. Background Four days ago, I launched a portal with database of barber salons at which people can find a salon through various criterions, see its photos, details, and also put a comment with their own opinion. The development took me half a year and it took me other 2 months to fill the database with information about barbers (I've also hired another three people to this job). I have not a big problem with getting people to my portal, I pay for PPC, comment on barber discussions etc.. In past four days I've reached a satisfactory number of visitors. Problem I deal with fact that everyone wants to search and read comments, but no one is willing to put her/his own opinion to barber. So I've tried following (2 days ago): Made comment anonymous, no one has to be afraid of compromise her/his identity with a salon owner I prepared a competition for users in which they can win a cosmetic package if they comment on at least three different salons I payed for PPC campaign on facebook which is telling people about the competition I registered competition on 20 portals for competitions And the result: People are commenting on facebook that the competition is a good idea They are giving likes on facebook But no one put a single comment to a barber salon I am getting little confused about what am I doing wrong. I will be thankful for any advice.

• Anyone been successful changing their career without having to start over from scratch?

  I posted a similar question on careeroverflow, but stackoverflow is just way more active and has way more users, so hopefully someone out there can help answer. I am currently an embedded developer in the defense/aerospace world for a big company. While I like the benefits and the pay, it just isn't keeping me happy. The Paul Graham article: How To Do What You Love really struck home. The problem I face are my golden handcuffs. When I look at jobs out there, they all want 5+ years experience in that language with expertise in framework/tool/server A,B,C, etc... I have worked in C and C++ on the job (in a real-time embedded environment) with some small things in C# and Java. I'm learning Ruby now to expand my knowledge, but I don't consider myself an expert in anything right now. I'd love to work on desktop applications or web apps. Is it possible for someone like me to make the switch without going back to the start line? I'd love to leave the huge bureaucracy and work with some great developers. I'd be willing to work late and take a modest pay cut, but that isn't so clear just from a resume. For those that have altered their career path, how did you do it? For those people who are in charge of hiring, what can I do to help myself?

• Old programmer disappeared. About to hire another programmer. How do I approach this?

  After spending over one year working on a social network project for me using WordPress and BuddyPress, my programmer has disappeared, even though he got paid every single week, for the whole period. Yes, he's not dead as I used an email tracker to confirm and see he opens my emails, but he doesn't respond. It seems he got another job. I wonder why he just couldn't say so. And I even paid him an advance salary for work he hasn't done. The problem is that I never asked for full documentation for most of the functions he coded in. And there were MANY functions for this 1+ year period, and some of them have bugs that he still didn't fix. Now it seems all confusing. What's the first thing I should do now? How do I proceed? I guess the first thing to do will be to get another programmer, but I want to start on the right foot by having all the current code documented so that any programmer can work on all the functions without issues. Is that the first thing I should do? If yes, how do I go about it? What's the standard type of documentation required for something like this? Can I get a programmer that will just do the documentation for all the codes and fix the bugs or is documentation not really important? Also, do you think getting another "individual" programmer is better or get a company that has programmers working for them, so that if the programmer assigned to my project disappears, another can replace him, without my involvement? I feel this is the approach I should have taken in the beginning.

• Looking for someone to point me in the right direction. I want to learn how to use hosted servers

  TL;DR: I want a Java program to run on a server, I want the server to forward a particular port from external to internal IP, I want store a few files on the server. Guides please. So I made a hack job Java program that acts as a server for my android application. It stores data in text files and HTML files, uploads them via FTP to my webhost, and manages socket connections (using port forwarding) with any phones connected. Right now I'm running it on NetBeans on my home computer. I know that it will probably slow down or crash once about 50 phones are connected at once. Is there any way I can run this program on a server with a high bandwidth? Can someone please find me a guide for that? I'm noob and don't know where to start looking. I seriously don't know anything about renting or using servers - I need a nice guide, and recommendations. My requirements for the server: Can handle about 2k socket connections at once Can run my Java code and store my txt files Can give me a port and an IP address so TCP/IP clients can be connected My budget: $50 CAD per month. Please someone set my ship sailing in the right direction, I really don't know where to look for resources.

  Two weeks ago, I traveled to Moscow, Russia. I had the pleasure of meeting with many of our Oracle Partners and Customers in the region.  I also worked with our Oracle Russia team throughout the week building many new friendships. The showcase for the week was an Oracle Support Strategy event for our Oracle Partners and Customers.  It was held at the Kateria-City Hotel, Moscow.  The Oracle Marketing team did an amazing job registering 100+ for the event, and nearly 100 were in attendance.           During the event, I spoke about many different topics. Part was a hands-on workshop to personalize your MOS Dashboard and configure Hot-Topics Email alerts.  Customers learned how to subscribe to newsletters and other Oracle information.  It covered a mulitude of Support Best Practices.  Additionally, I presented Platinum Services to the audience and my colleague Kristophe Hermans, from Oracle Belgium spoke on Proactive Support. In addition, I had the distinct privilege to meet one-on-one with our customers representing OJSC VimpelCom, MTC-Rus and Sberbank.  Pictured with me is Valery Yourinsky, Director of Technology Consulting Dept, FORS Distribution (Oracle Platinum Partner) Finally, I spent 2.5 days with my Oracle colleagues from Oracle Russia. • Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools Screencast

  Microsoft just released the Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools extension and it is awesome. A summary of all the features can be found here and it is available in the Visual Studio Gallery here. There are a bunch of great features but, in my opinion, the best one is the replacement for the Add Reference dialog. This gives sub-string search capabilities as well as the ability to add multiple references without having to continually re-open the dialog. For this feature alone, you should install the Pro Power Tools right now. There are a few blogs posts that do a good job describing all the features but what I wanted to do here was to post a quick screencast (7 minutes) that shows the features that I think are really cool. I show most (but not all) of the features focusing on the ones I think are the best. • Azure Search Preview

  One of the things I’ve been keeping an eye on for quite a while now is the development of the Azure Search system. While it’s not a full replacement for the full-text indexing service in SQL Server on-premises as yet, it’s a really, really good start. Liam Cavanagh, Pablo Castro and the team have done a great job bringing this to the preview stage and I suspect it could be quite popular. I was very impressed by how they incorporated quite a bit of feedback I gave them early on, and I’m sure that others involved would have felt the same. There are two tiers at present. One is a free tier and has shared resources; the other is currently $125/month and has reserved resources. I would like to see another tier between these two, much the same way that Azure websites work. If you have any feedback on this, now would be a good time to make it known. • Problem with recursive rar archiving non-ascii filenames

  Say I want to create a backup of folder MainFolder's content using rar. The command rar a Backup.rar -r MainFolder does the job. BUT, if a subdirectory contains more than one file named with non-ASCII (?) characters, then only one of them is archived and the others get excluded. For example, consider the following directory hierarchy (MainFolder, A and B are folders; a, b, ? and ? are files) +MainFolder +A -a -b -? -? +B -a -b -a -b -? -? then the command rar a Backup.rar -r MainFolder skips MainFolder/A/? MainFolder/? while rar a Backup.rar -r MainFolder/* still skips MainFolder/A/? Why is it so? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks! For the record, I already encountered some issues with non-ascii characters (see this question) that other Linux distributions seem not to have. Anyway, I use Lubuntu 12.04, terminal is lxterminal and echo $BASH_VERSION returns 4.2.25(1)-release. rar version is 4.00 beta 3. Another curiosity: right-clicking on the folder and selecting Compress... and then .rar still has the same problem. Other options (zip, tar...) behave correctly.

• Working with fubar/refuctored code

  I'm working with some code which was written by a contractor who left a year ago leaving a number of projects with buggy, disgustingly bad code. This is what I call cowboy PHP, say no more. Ideally I'd like to leave the project as is and never touch it again. Things break, requirements change and it needs to be maintained. Part A needs to be changed. There is a bug I cannot reproduce. Part A is connect to parts B D and E. This kind of work gives me a headache and makes me die a little inside. It kills my motivation and productivity. To be honest I'd say it's affecting my mental health. Perhaps being at the start of my career I'm being naive to think production code should be reasonably clean. I would like to hear from anyone else who has been in this situation before. What did you do to get out of it? I'm thinking long term I might have to find another job. Edit I've moved on from this company now, to a place where idiots are not employed. The code isn't perfect but it's at least manageable and peer reviewed. There are a lot of people in the comments below telling me that software is messy like this. Sure I don't agree with the way some programmers do things but this code was seriously mangled. The guy who wrote it tried to reinvent every wheel he could, and badly. He stopped getting work from us because of his bad code that nobody on the team could stand. If it were easy to refactor I would have. Eventually after many 'just do this small 10minute change' situations had ballooned into hours of lost time (regardless of who on the team was doing the work) my boss finally caved in it was rewritten.

• Download lastfm tags into mp3 comment or genre tag

  for a long time I dream to have a songs lastfm tags in my music library, so I can use them to quickly generate playlists. There used to be a way to do that in amarok 1.4, but it never was stable. Than there is MusicBrainz Picard's lastfm/lastfmplus plugin. It is partially fine, but I cannot manage to make it look ONLY for the lastfm tags and put them into comments/genre/whatever but it always hast to tag everything. And it isn't particularly good with it, especially with small bands, songs without album etc. My music library is rather well organised. Most of the tags are correct. I also have quite some songs without an album. And I don't want it to find the albums for those songs, since it'd mess up my album view. So it must not touch the fields track name, track number, artist and album. All I want is that the most popular lastfm tags get into the genre or comments tag of the mp3, separated by semicolons, commas or whatever. I think I remember a script that did this job, but I cannot find. Does anybody know if there is anything like this? Would it be to hard to write this, for example as Banshee plugin? Thank you

• How to represent an agile project to people focused on waterfall [closed]

  Our team has been asked to represent our development efforts in a project plan. No one is unhappy with our work or questioning our ability to deliver, we are just participating in an IT cattle call for project plans. Trouble is we are an agile team and haven't thought about our work in terms of a formal project plan. While we have a general idea of what we are working on next we aren't 100% sure until we plan an iteration. Until now our team has largely operated in a vacuum and has not been required to present our methodology or metrics to outside parties. We follow most of the practices espoused in Extreme Programming. We hold quarterly planning meetings to have a general idea of the stories we are going to work on for a quarter. That said, our stories are documented on 3x5 cards and are only estimated at the beginning of the iteration in which they are going to be worked. After estimation we document the story in Team Foundation Sever. During an iteration, we attach code to stories and mark stories as completed once finished. From this data we are able to generate burn down and velocity charts. Most importantly we know our average velocity for an iteration keeping us from biting off more than we can chew. I am not looking to modify the way we do development but want to present our development activities in a report that someone only familiar with waterfall will understand. In What Does an Agile Project Plan Look Like, Kent McDonald does a good job laying out the differences between agile and waterfall project plans. The official guidance around Visual Studio 2010 has been created by the Visual Studio ALM Rangers and is a brew of a bunch of really clever guys experiences working with the tools and customers. I will be creating a series of posts on the different guidance options as many people still do not know about them even though Willy-Peter Schaub has done a fantastic job of making sure they get the recognition they deserve. There is a full list of all of the Rangers Solutions and Projects on MSDN, but I wanted to add my own point of view to the usefulness of each one. • Is there a command-line utility app which can find a specific block of lines in a text file, and replace it?

  UPDATE (see end of question) The text "search and replace" utility programs I've seen, seem to only search on a line-by-line basis... Is there a command-line tool which can locate one block of lines (in a text file), and replace it with another block of lines.? For example: Does the test file file contain this exact group of lines: 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. 'Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!' I want this, so that I can replace multiple lines of text in a file and know I'm not overwriting the wrong lines. I would never replace "The Jabberwocky" (Lewis Carroll), but it makes a novel example :) UPDATE: ..(sub-update) My following comment about reasons when not use sed are only in the context of; don't push any tool too far beyond its design intent (I use sed quite often, and consider it to be invaluable.) I just now found an interesting web page about sed and when not to use it. So, because of all the sed answers, I"ll post the link.. it is part of the sed FAQ on sourceforge Also, I'm pretty sure there is some way diff can do the job of locating the block of text (once it's located, the replacement is quite straight foward; using head and tail) ... 'diff' dumps all the necessary data, but I haven't yet worked out how to filter it , ... (I'm still working on it)

• Introducing a (new) test method to a team

  A couple of months ago i was hired in a new job. (I'm fresh out of my Masters in software engineering) The company mainly consists of ERP consultants, but I was hired in their fairly small web department (6 developers), our main task is ERP/ecom integration (ERP-integrated web shops). The department is growing, and recently my manager asked me to start thinking about introducing tests to the team, i love a challenge, but frankly I'm a bit scared (I'm the least experience member of the team). Currently the method of testing is clicking around in the web shop and asking the customer if the products are there, if they look okay, and if orders are posted correctly to the ERP. We are getting a lot of support cases on previous projects, where a customer or a customer's customer have run into errors, which - i suppose - is why my manager wants more structured testing. Off the top of my head, I though of some (obvious?) improvements, like looking at the requirement specification, having an issue tracker, enabling team members to register their time on a "tests"-line on the budget, and to circulate tasks amongst members of the team. But as i see it we have three main challenges: general website testing. (javascript, C#, ASP.NET and CMS integration tests) (live) ERP integration testing (customers rarely want to pay for test environments). adopting a method in the team I like the responsibility, but I am afraid that I'm in a little bit over my head. I expect that my manager expects me to set up some kind of workshop for the team where I present some techniques and ideas and where we(the team) can find some solutions together. What I learned in school was mostly unit testing and program verification, not so much testing across multiple systems and applications. What I'm looking for here, is references/advice/pointers/anecdotes; anything that might help me to get smarter and to improve the current method of my team. Thanks!! (TL;DR: read the bold parts)

• How to tell your boss that his programming style is really bad?

  I'm a student and in my spare time I'm working for a big enterprise as Java developer. The job is good, but the problem is, my boss is writing very strange code. I don't want to complain, but some issues are in my opinion really strange. For example: he doesn't know any booleans. All boolean conditions are Strings called "YesOrNo" and then in the condition he uses if (YesOrNo == "Yes") there are a lot of very strange characters in method names and variables like é õ ô or è all loops are infinite loops in the style of for(;;). Then at the end of the loop the condition is tested and if the conditions is fulfilled break; is called. I don't now if I should tell him that I think this isn't a good practice, since he is my boss and decides how and what to do. On the other hand some of this examples are really very weird. Any hints how to cope with? And is this only me who thinks that's bad style?

• Choosing a (browser) game environment [closed]

  I apologise in advance if this post is something you've heard a million times already or seems like a trolling attempt. I just want some advice and I'm coming up short with my own Google searches. Basically, I would like to start learning some game development in my own free time (nothing serious, just purely as a hobbyist for fun). I'd like to know what the communities opinions are on the old HTML5/Javascript v Flash argument but purely from a game development perspective. I know people say Flash is dying because of issues like SEO, memory/bandwidth usage and Apple dropping it on tablet and mobile devices, so is it worth me dedicating my free time to learning to use Flash/AS3 for game development or should I focus on HTML5/Javascript? At the moment, I'm not sure HTML5/Javascript is mature enough or has the support tools that Flash does (framework, IDE, etc) and there seems to be a lot more resources online for beginner Flash/AS3 programming. When I'm reading tutorials online for Flash/AS3 I always have it in the back of my head that I'm wasting my time because it won't be around in a few years and I should be investing that time learning HTML5/Javascript. Thoughts? Disclaimer: I'm not trying to spark a flame war or troll anyone - I believe in the right tools for the job and I don't want to waste my time learning something that won't be around in a few years.

• Accessing hardware via USB by proprietary windows software using Wine

  I have this proprietary software that access some hardware using USB. Over a year ago I tried to install it on a Ubuntu OS using Wine (the program is written for Windows). The UI seemed to work just fine but it had no access to the USB port. Back then I had to license a Windows copy in order to get the job done. Now, that Windows version we where using is deprecated and it is not longer available and available versions cost trice as much. So it is time to give Linux another try. How can I ensure that the USB is available for a Wine application? Neither the application nor the hardware install any driver, the app just pool all available USB drivers and make a handshake if it recognizes that the hardware is present. I want to minimize the test cases before abandoning Linux one more time. Update I've just tried again (with the hope an upgrade was made from last year), and it is not working. The proprietary windows app is not finding the hardware.

• Is there such a thing as "closure" with software work?

  I burned out last year (after a decade of fulltime programming jobs) and am on a sabbatical now. With all the self-examination I've started to figure out some of the root causes of my burnout, and one of the major ones is basically this: there was never any real closure in any of the work I've ever done. It was always a case of getting into an open-ended support/maintenance grind and going stale. When I first entered the industry, I had this image of programming work being very project-based. And I expected projects to have a start, beginning, and END. And then you move on and start on something totally new and fresh. Basically I never expected that a lot (most) of software work involves supporting and maintaining the same code base for open-ended long periods of time - years and even decades. That, combined with generally having itchy feet makes me think that burnout is inevitable for me, after 2-3 years, in ANY fulltime software job. All this sounds like I probably should have been a contractor instead of a fulltimer. But when I discuss this with people, a lot of them say that even THEN you can't really escape having to go back and maintain/support the stuff you worked on, over and over (eg. Coming back on support contracts, for example). The nature of software work is simply like that. There is no project closure, unlike in many other engineering fields. So my question is - Is there ANY programming work out there which is based on short to mid term projects/stints and then moving on cleanly? And is there any particular industry domain or specialization where this kind of project work is typical?
