• FTP Publishing with the new Windows Azure Release

  There is a good chance you might have stumbled upon the new Windows Azure Release that we made on June 6th.  Scott Guthrie’s Post quite summarizes the overall new features. One of my favorite features is the Windows Azure Websites and the ability to do publish files to Azure using your FTP Client. Windows Azure Websites offers low cost (free upto 10 websites) web hosting where you can deploy any website that can run on IIS 7.0, quickly. The earlier releases of Azure SDKs and the Azure platform support .NET 3.5 & above for running your applications.  This was a constraint for many since there are/were a lot of ASP.NET 2.0 applications built over time and simply to put it on Azure, many of you were skeptical to migrate it to .NET 4. Windows Azure Websites offer the flexibility of running IIS 7.0 supported .NET Versions which means you can run .NET 1.1, 2.0, 3.5 and .NET 4.  Not just that! You can also run classic ASP Applications. Windows Azure Websites don’t need you to go through the complexity of adding the Cloud Project Template and then publishing the Configuration Files.  Lets take a step by step understanding of Websites and publishing using FTP. I downloaded the Club Website Starter Kit from http://www.asp.net/downloads/starter-kits/club It also requires a database and I downloaded the SQL Scripts and created a SQL Server Database called Club. This installs a Web Site Project Template.  Note that I am running Windows 8 Release Preview and Visual Studio 2012 RC.  After installing the template, select File – New – Website and don’t forget to choose the Framework version as .NET 2.0 You can see the “Club Website Starter Kit” .  Once you select the Website gets created.  You would encounter a warning indicating that the Club Website Starter Kit uses SQL Express and the recommended database is LocalDB Express.  Click ok to continue.  Once the Website is created open up the Web.config and locate the “ClubSiteDB” connection string.  By default, it points to a SQL Express Database.  Instead configure it to use your local SQL Server. Also, open up Global.asax and comment out the following line if (!Roles.RoleExists("Administrators")) Roles.CreateRole("Administrators"); There seems to be an issue in the code that doesn’t create the role.  Post that, hit CTRL+F5 and you should be able to see the Website Running, as below So, now we have the Club Starter Kit site up running locally.  Moving to Azure Visit http://manage.windowsazure.com/ and sign up for a trial account.  This allows you to host up to 10 websites for free and a host of other benefits.  The free Websites can be extended to an year without any charge.  Once you have signed up, sign in to the portal using the Live ID used for sign up. After signing in, you would be presented with the “All Items” listing page which lists, Websites, Cloud Services, Databases etc.,  If this is the first time, you wouldn’t find anything. Click on the “Websites” link from the left menu.  Click on “New” in the bottom and it should show up a dialog.  In the same, select Website and click on “Quick Create” and in the URL Textbox, specify “MyFirstDemo” and click the “Create Web Site” link below. It should take a few seconds to create the Website.  Once the Website is created, click on the listing and it should open up the Dashboard.  Since we haven’t done anything yet, there shouldn’t be any statistics Click on the “Download publish profile” link in the right bottom.  This file has the FTP publishing settings. Also, if you scroll down you can see the FTP URL for this site.  It should typically start ftp://waws-xxxx-xxx-xxxx In the downloaded publish profile file, you can also find the ftp URL.  Pick the following from this file publishUrl (the 2nd one, the one that features after publishMethod =”FTP”) and the userName and userPWD that follows. Note that we have everything required to publish the files.  But since the Club Starter Kit uses Databases, we need to have the Database running on SQL Azure.  Go back to the Main Menu and click on “New” in the bottom but this time select “SQL Database” and provide “Club” as Database name for “Quick Create” If this is the first time a Server would be created.  Otherwise, it would pickup the existing server name. Once the database is created, you can use the SQL Azure Migration Wizard http://sqlazuremw.codeplex.com/ and provide the credentials to connect to local database and then the SQL Azure database for migrating the “Club” database.  The migration wizard UI hasn’t changed much and is the same as explained by me in one my posts earlier http://geekswithblogs.net/ranganh/archive/2009/09/29/taking-your-northwind-database-to-sql-azure-and-binding-it.aspx Once the database is migrated, come back to the main screen and click on the Database base in the Azure Management Portal.  It opens up the dashboard of the database.  Click on “Show connection Strings” and it would popup a list of connection string formats.  Choose the ADO.NET connection string and after editing the password with the password that you provided when creating the database server in the Azure Portal, paste it into the config file of the Club Starter Kit Website.  Just to reiterate, the connection string key is ClubSiteDB. Try running the Website once to ensure that the application though running locally could connect to the SQL Database running on Azure. Once you are able to run the website successfully, we are all set to do the FTP Publishing. Download your favorite FTP tool.  I use http://filezilla-project.org/ In the Host Textbox, paste the FTP URL that you picked up from the publish profile file and also paste the username and password.  Click on “QuickConnect”.  If everything is fine, you should be able to connect to the remote server.  If it is successfully connected, you can see the wwwroot folder of the Website, running in Azure Make sure on the “Local Site” in the left, you choose the path to the folder of your Website.  Open up the Website folder on the left such that it lists all the files and folders inside.  Select all of them and click select “Upload” or simply drag and drop all the files to the root folder that is listed above.  Once the publishing is done, you should be able to hit the SiteURL that you can find the dashboard page of the website.  In our case, it would be http://MyFirstDemo.azurewebsites.net That’s it, we have now done FTP publishing in Azure and that too we are running a .NET 2.0 Website on Azure. • Network Access: I can't access 192.168.1.101 from 192.168.1.102.

  Hi, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on my PC with IP 192.168.1.101. every thing work fine, e.g. my web server is running and I can see http://localhost/ or http://192.168.1.101 properly. But the problem is that I cannot see my PC from my laptop at 192.168.1.102 e.g. at my laptop http://192.168.1.101 gives Connection timed out in browser. or trying to telnet on any port leads to: telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out laptop is running a fresh install of Ubuntu as well and there is no setup for firewall stuff in both computers. PS: Both computers can ping each other well. The router is a cicso linksys wireless ADSL modem. Currently, I can connect to FTP server on the Windows running on 192.168.1.102 from 192.168.1.101 without problem. • Where is the virtual function call overhead?

  Hello everybody, I'm trying to benchmark the difference between a function pointer call and a virtual function call. To do this, I have written two pieces of code, that do the same mathematical computation over an array. One variant uses an array of pointers to functions and calls those in a loop. The other variant uses an array of pointers to a base class and calls its virtual function, which is overloaded in the derived classes to do absolutely the same thing as the functions in the first variant. Then I print the time elapsed and use a simple shell script to run the benchmark many times and compute the average run time. The code is compiled it with g++ -O3. The first one is test1, the second is test2. And then, this: [Ignat@localhost circuit_testing]$ ./test2 && ./test2 0.01531 0.0152476 Where are the 25% which should be visible? How can the first executable be even slower than the second one? I'm asking this because I'm doing a project which involves calling a lot of small functions in a row like this in order to compute the values of an array, and the code I've inherited does a very complex manipulation to avoid the virtual function call overhead. Now where is this famous call overhead?

• WebSphere MQ running under local account / group cannot read group memberships for Active Directory user. Workaround or alternative resolution?

  I am developing an application that is using WebSphere MQ v6.0. WebSphere MQ is currently not working due to the following issue: WebSphere MQ service runs under local user "MUSR_MQADMIN" in the local group "mqm" I attempt to use the service using my own account, BIZ\noahz MUSR_MQADMIN needs to check if BIZ\noahz is in local group "mqm" MUSR_MQADMIN does not have permission to read the Active Directory group membership of BIZ\noahz The following error appears in the MQ log file: ----- amqzfubn.c : 3582 ------------------------------------------------------- 1/31/2011 18:51:32 - Process(704.1105) User(MUSR_MQADMIN) Program(amqzlaa0.exe) AMQ8079: Access was denied when attempting to retrieve group membership information for user 'noahz@biz'. EXPLANATION: WebSphere MQ, running with the authority of user 'musr_mqadmin@noahz-biz', was unable to retrieve group membership information for the specified user. ACTION: Ensure Active Directory access permissions allow user 'musr_mqadmin@noahz-biz' to read group memberships for user 'noahz@biz'. • Wubi and Vista 64 bits can't work

  First of all, I have posted this issue at Ubuntu Forum without success yet. Hello, I have downloaded "kubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso" and I have mounted it on my Windows Vista 64 bits Ultimate. I have downloaded wubi 9.10. The problem is when installing, it crash after few time. • Correct PHP5 DLL for Apache 2.2?

  I have installed Apache 2.2.14 (Win32) on a Windows XP machine and am trying to add the latest PHP module. I downloaded the ZIP file from here labeled "VC9 x86 Non Thread Safe" and extracted to my Apache directory. I then copied php5.dll to Apache's bin directory and copied php.ini to C:\Windows. In httpd.conf, I added these lines: LoadModule php5_module "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/bin/php5.dll" AddType application/x-httpd-php .php Now Apache will not start. error.log says this: "Can't locate API module structure php5_module in file C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/bin/php5.dll": No error" I think I may have the wrong .dll file, because I found tutorials that use the filename php5apache2.dll and I didn't see that in the PHP package I got. Also, I have seen references to a file called php5ts.dll, but I don't see that either. What exactly do I need to make PHP5 work?

• TeamCity EC2 Integration via ISA Server

  I have a TeamCity server which is actually installed on SBS 2003 Premium with ISA Server (firewall/proxy) installed. My ADSL connection has multiple IP addresses, which all resolve directly to my SBS external NIC. The NIC is therefore multi-homed and I have allocated one of the IP addresses specifically to TeamCity. In ISA, I've created an access rule to allow the traffic in. I can access my TeamCity server externally and view the web interface, that all works fine. I want to use the Amazon EC2 integration in TeamCity to launch build agents 'in the cloud'. The problem I am having is that when the agent starts, it sees the server and registers, then just sits there waiting. On the server side, the agent appears as 'disconnected'. Examining the settings, the agent's IP address appears to be that of the external NIC. What I think might be happening is that the traffic is undergoing Network Address Translation (NAT) so that TeamCity always thinks the agent is locally installed and therefore can't communicate with the actual remote agent. This seems to happen even though I have a permanent static IP address dedicated to TeamCity. So, the question is this. How can I make traffic to a specific IP address pass through the ISA server un-NATted?

  Scenario I have PowerPoint 2010 On the "Transitions" tab the "Advance Slide On Mouse Click" check box is checked. I have a long, slow, timed, non-repeating animation working in the background of the slide. I click to advance the slide before the animation is finished, but ... Instead of advancing the slide, the animation moves to the completed state ... Forcing a second click to actually advance the slide. Additionally If I have other animations on the slide that are initiated by a click, the long animation also advances to a finished state before starting the new animation. Desired Behavior On click, I want the slide to advance or the next on-click animation to start whether the long animation is done or not, and without having that long animation first "complete" itself. In the case of another animation, I simply want the long animation to continue, while also doing the new animation. Ultimate Question Is there a way to either: Set an option somewhere to not have that animation complete on click and simply "continue" to animate with the start of a new animation or to advance the slide (as the case may be)? Create a VBA script that will produce the desired behavior for the long animation?

  Hi, today I accidently changed one option of Teminal Services, I checked "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication". After that, I can't connect to my server any more. The error says: The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support. But my client pcs(both home and at office) are running Windows 7, as far as I know, it shoud support NLA; And in About dialog of Remote Desktop Connection there says "Supports Network Level Authentication". My server is running Windows Server 2008, placed in IDC center; I could connect to it before I change the settings. All other sevices(like IIS, SQL Server) are running normally. For clients, I tried two PCs running Windows 7, and two virtual windows XP machine running in Virtual PC and Virtual Box, all of them gives the same error message. Is there a way I can make things right without go to IDC which is far away? Thanks.

All machines where on while this was happening. AD01 (Win 2008 GC) AD02 (Win 2008 GC, Operations master) AD03 (Win 2003 GC) AD01 was then shutdown for a month. Upon starting this machine up with replaced hardware (NIC and RAID card) i now have a weird problem. • Two hosting providers running simultaneously... possible / not possible? good practice / unnecessary?

  For the sake of their reputation, I won't mention the names. But I'll just use: Business I worked for previously - ABC Web Dev Hosting company they used - XYZ Hosting I recently found out that XYZ Hosting had some sort of incident where they ended up losing a lot of their client's data - including ABC Web Dev's. ABC Web Dev was able to recover some of their customer's websites, after pulling them from their local development computers and putting them up on another hosting provider. They ended up losing a lot of clients because of it and their reputation ruined. I'm starting my own web dev company and I don't want to run into this same issue. I'm planning on using Rackspace but, although they are a great company, according to wikipedia they still have had downtime in their past. I thought it might be a good idea to try to run two providers at once, to ensure that if anything happened in one the websites would still be live because of the other. I know the websites would have to be pulling from one server at all times, but if there's a way to redirect requests to the second server if the first one is down that would solve my issue. As a note, we will have a staging environment setup locally which will allow for quick recovery if a provider did have any issues, however I'd like to avoid any downtime at all if possible. So my questions are: Has anyone tried running two providers simultaneously? Would this be considered good practice or am I going too far? Is there really any way to run two simultaneously where one server acts as a backup?

• BAD DC transfering FSMO Roles to ADC

  I have a DC (FQDN:server.icmcpk.local) and an ADC (FQDN:file-server.icmcpk.local). Recently my DC is facing a bad sector problem so I changed the Operation Masters to file-server for all five roles. but when ever i turn off the OLD DC the file-server also stops wroking with AD and GPMC further i m also unable to join any other computer to this domain. For Test purpose i also added a new ADC (FQDN:wds-server.icmcpk.local) but no succes with the old DC off i had to turn the old DC on and then joined it. • Virtual memory on Linux doesn't add up?

  I was looking at System Monitor on Linux and noticed that Firefox is using 441 MB of memory, and several other applications are using 274, 257, 232, etc (adding up to over 3 GB of virtual memory). So I switch over to the Resources tab, and it says I'm using 462 MB of memory and not touching swap. I'm confused. What does the virtual memory amount mean then if the programs aren't actually using it. I was thinking maybe memory they've requested but aren't using, but how would the OS know that? I can't think of any "I might need this much memory in the future" function..

• Sharing large (multi-Gb) files with clients

  I wasn't sure if this was the best place for this question, but I think it is squarely in the realm of the IT admin so that's the reason I put it here. We need to share large files (several Gigabytes) with external clients. We need a simple way of reliably and automatically publishing these files so that clients can then download them. Our organization has Windows desktops and a Windows SBS 2011 server. Sharing from our server is probably suboptimal from the client's perspective, because of the low upstream bandwidth of typical ADSL (around 1 Mbps) - it would take all day (9 hours for a 4Gb file) for the client to download the file. Uploading to a 3rd party sever is good for the client but painful for us, because we then have to deal with a multi-hour upload. Uploading to a third-part server would be less problematic if it could be made reliable and automatic, e.g. something like a Groove/SharePoint Workspace, simply drop the file in and wait for it to synchronize - but Groove has a 2Gb limit which is not big enough. So ideally I'd like a service with the following attributes: Must work for files of at least 5Gb, preferably 10Gb Once the transfer is started, it must be reliable (i.e. not sensitive to disconnections and service outages) and completely automatic Ideally, the sender would get a notification when the transfer completes. Has to work with Windows based systems. Any suggestions?

• KVM/Libvirt bridged/routed networking not working on newer guest kernels

  I have a dedicated server running Debian 6, with Libvirt (0.9.11.3) and Qemu-KVM (qemu-kvm-1.0+dfsg-11, Debian). I am having a problem getting bridged/routed networking to work in KVM guests with newer kernels (2.6.38). NATted networking works fine though. Older kernels work perfectly fine as well. I have encountered this problem with every guest OS I've tried, that being Fedora, Ubuntu (server/desktop) and Debian with an upgraded kernel. I've also tried compiling the guest kernel myself, to no avail. I have no problem with recompiling a kernel, though the host cannot afford any downtime. Any ideas on this problem are very welcome. EDIT: I can ping the host from inside the guest.

• How to remove a partition on a USB drive?

  I got a free promotional USB stick that I want to format for my own purposes. When I inserted it, it automatically opened a browser and launched a web site. I have since disabled autoplay on this computer so that nothing launches when the stick is inserted. But it still shows up as two separate drives, and one of them is a "CD Drive" that I can't format. How can a USB stick contain a "CD Drive?" And more to the point, how can I remove this partition using Windows XP or Ubuntu? Update I previously asked for an XP solution, but finding none, I have tried Ubuntu, also without success. Gparted doesn't see the "CD" portion as a device at all, and from bash, any chmod changes I try tell me that the file system is read-only. Any ideas?

• kill process but fail

  Hi, I am running a bash script as a background job. The bash script calls a time-consuming executable. If I am not wrong, the running of the bash script is the parent process and the running of the executable is the child process. I now want to stop the whole running by killing the parent process which is the background job kill -9 $(jobs -p) The terminal shows that the running of the bash script is killed. But the running of the executable still hangs on the output of top. I just wonder how to also kill the child process? Thanks and regards!

• How does Mac's command line compare to Linux?

  I love Ubuntu Linux - especially the commmand line. But I have to admit that, at least for now, Windows is more user-friendly - there's more software for it, more drivers, and more stuff just works. Knowing that Mac is built on Unix makes me wonder if it's the sweet spot between them. But I wonder: how similar is the Mac command line to Linux's bash? Could I pick right up with using vim and bash scripting and git, etc? Would common commands like changing directories be different? Does anybody know an online "compare and contrast" resource?

• Why is my FTP output file blank?

  From the Windows command prompt, I have FTPd to a Windows web server. I can get a file, and I can see a directory listing with dir, but I want to save that list locally. I tried dir > c:\somefile.txt, and the file is created, but it's blank. Same thing if I do ls > c:\somefile.txt. The result is the same when I FTP from a Linux box. • Windows 8 with LiveID login authenticates as Guest to remote SQl Server

  I have a network where several users are using Office Accounting 2009 in multi-user client/server mode. OA is built on SQL Server. One PC acts as the 'server' and has the SQl Server instance, the others have only the application installed and no SQL instance, all of the apps connect remotely to the SQL instance on the 'server'. I'm using the term 'server' loosely here, it is just a normal workstation that happens to be designated as the server and runs the SQL instance. There is no NT domain, all user accounts are local accounts. The way that OA works in multi-user mode is that each user is required to have a local account with the same username and password on both the client and 'server' PCs. This has been working well, no along comes Windows 8. I use my 'Microsoft Account' aka LiveID to log into Windows 8. Office Accounting runs fine and attempts to connect to the database, but fails, 'you do not have permission to perform this operation'. In the SQL logs, I get this error: 2012-10-28 17:54:01.32 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. 2012-10-28 17:54:01.32 Logon Login failed for user 'SERVER\Guest'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure SERVER is the hostname of the server. So it seems to be authenticating as 'Guest'?? To verify this, I enabled the Guest account on the 'server' PC and then added Guest as an allowed user within Office Accounting (this simply creates the user in SQL and gives it an appropriate database role). Sure enough, My Windows 8 PC was then able to connect to the database when using Office Accounting. Clearly, having users authenticate as 'Guest' stinks from a security and auditing standpoint. So what I need are some ideas for how to work around this. I've tried switching the Windows 8 PC to a 'local account' and that works too, but requires giving up significant functionality on the Windows 8 PC. What I really need is a way to force the Windows 8 PC to use a specific set of credentials when connecting to the remote SQL instance. Office Accounting takes the logged in username, which is my LiveID and doesn't correspond to any Windows user name. Anyone solved this issue?

• PowerPoint avoid animation completion on click & advance slide or start new one

  Scenario I have PowerPoint 2010 On the "Transitions" tab the "Advance Slide On Mouse Click" check box is checked. I have a long, slow, timed, non-repeating animation working in the background of the slide. I click to advance the slide before the animation is finished, but ... Instead of advancing the slide, the animation moves to the completed state ... Forcing a second click to actually advance the slide. Additionally If I have other animations on the slide that are initiated by a click, the long animation also advances to a finished state before starting the new animation. Desired Behavior On click, I want the slide to advance or the next on-click animation to start whether the long animation is done or not, and without having that long animation first "complete" itself. In the case of another animation, I simply want the long animation to continue, while also doing the new animation. Ultimate Question Is there a way to either: Set an option somewhere to not have that animation complete on click and simply "continue" to animate with the start of a new animation or to advance the slide (as the case may be)? Create a VBA script that will produce the desired behavior for the long animation?

• Does MySQL log successful or attempted queries?

  I'm trying to track down a hit-or-miss bug in a web application. Sometimes a request completes just fine; sometimes it hangs and never finishes. I see that Apache now has several requests listed on the server-status page as "sending reply," and that doesn't change. I'm testing on localhost, so there shouldn't ever be more than one. Out of curiosity, I set MySQL to log all queries and I'm tail -fing the log file. When things go OK, I see a pattern like this: 20 Connect root@localhost on dbname 20 Query (some query #1) 20 Query (some query #2) (etc) 20 Quit 21 Connect (etc) When it hangs, I see a pattern like this: 22 Connect root@localhost on dbname 22 Query (some query #1) //nothing happens, so I try the post again 23 Connect root@localhost on dbname 23 Query (some query #1) //nothing happens; try again 24 Connect (etc) Here's my question: is MySQL logging attempted queries, or successful queries? In other words, if the last line I see is query #1, does that imply that query #1 or query #2 is hanging? My guess is that the one I don't see is the problem, because the last one I see looks fine, but maybe the one I don't see is too screwed-up for MySQL to process. Thoughts?

• Thoughts on Apache log file sizes?

  Do you place any limits on the size of Apache log files - access.log and error.log? Specifically, can you give: Reasons to limit log file sizes Disk space Any other? Reasons NOT to limit log file sizes Research into performance issues or security breaches Any other? Methods of doing so Cron job that periodically deletes the file, or the first N lines? Any other? Anything you might salvage before deleting For example, grep out how many times a file was downloaded before deleting the access logs I'd like get the thoughts of experienced sysadmins before I do anything. (Marking as community wiki since this may be a matter of opinion.)
