• Is the Alternate Ubuntu installer still required for LVM or Software RAID setup?

  Over the past 5 years, I have been setting up Ubuntu servers using the Alternate installer. I need to provision a new server today, and I'm curious if the Alternate CD is still the only way to setup LVM/RAID at installation time. I'm my limited experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, I noticed it's single installer configures LVM automatically. Has Ubuntu's installer, at least the standard "Server" installer, added support for LVM/RAID, or is the Alternate installer still required for that kind of server setup? http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/DVDs/ubuntu/12.04.1/release/ Alternate install CD The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. It provides for the following situations: setting up automated deployments; upgrading from older installations without network access; LVM and/or RAID partitioning; installs on systems with less than about 384MiB of RAM (although note that low-memory systems may not be able to run a full desktop environment reasonably). LVM has always been fundamental for our server needs, so I'm surprised if it is still not considered a server-worthy feature.

• How do I debug an overheating problem?

  Hello guys. I have a problem with my Laptop (Dell Inspiron 1564 Core i5 4GB Ram VGA ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300 running Ubuntu 10.10 32bit). It shuts down abruptly without even a lag in the application I am working with before shutdown. I think it's overheating problem. Actually the laptop is hot all the time when I am running Ubuntu. When I switch back to windows, even with intense load it won't shutdown or show any problem as long as I keep proper ventilation (when the air openings are blocked it does the same). Actually on Ubuntu i don't usually do things that need much CPU power, usually surfing internet, coding web pages and sometimes playing with python and ruby. I am not enabling desktop effects so no GPU load except the normal GNOME gui. Now as I am writing the Processor load in the panel monitor applet is 0%, Memory 11% by programs, 22% by cache. And i have CPU Frequency monitor for each of the 4 cores set to 1.20 Ghz (the lowest possible value, i am not sure if this applet does really limit CPU usage). Running sensors in terminal gave me temp1: +26.8°C (crit = +100.0°C) temp2: +0.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) hddtemp /dev/sda at the terminal gave me /dev/sda: WDC WD3200BEVT-75ZCT2: 46°C All that fine but the laptop is Really hot i can feel it in the keyboard, mouse pad is painful to touch, and the fan is always spinning. I am also placing 2 small fans running on USB under the laptop right now and the laptop is lifted over the fans so it's well ventilated. When I am running windows it doesn't get that hot except when there is a really big load on the CPU and this is keeping me away from using Linux for everyday tasks. Actually I don't care much for speed as I can deal with low speed it's not going to shutdown abruptly. So please if you can help me and tell me what are the possible causes, where should I start ?

• Compressing/compacting messages over websocket on Node.js

  We have a websocket implementation (Node.js/Sock.js) that exchanges data as JSON strings. As our use cases grow, so have the size of the data transmitted across the wire. The websocket protocol does not natively offer any compression feature, so in order to reduce the size of our messages we'd have to manually do something about the serialisation. There appear to be a variety of LZW implementations in Javascript, some which confuses me on their compatibility for in-browser use only versus transmission across the wire due to my lack of understanding on low-level encodings. More importantly, all of them seem to take a noticeable performance drag when Javascript is the engine doing the compression/decompression work, which is not desirable for mobile devices. Looking instead other forms of compact serialisation, MessagePack does not appear to have any active support in Javascript itself; BSON does not have any Javascript implementation; and an alternative BISON project that I tested does not deserialise everything back to their original values (large numbers), and it does not look like any further development will happen either. What are some other options others have explored for Node.js?

• How to determine the amount to spend per phrase on Adwords research?

  My company would like to start a PPC advertising campaign. Whilst I understand the concept and how to set everything up from a technical point of view, this is something I've never done before. Logically, we'd like to test out a wide range of keywords that we think would lead to conversions, which we've put together through brainstorming and with some help from Google's External Keyword Tool. Sub-question whilst I remember - am I correct in thinking that in Google's keyword tool, keywords that we think will perform well that have a low competition yet high monthly searches are good since there will be less advertisers, meaning our bid per click will be less? Is there a common benchmark or process of doing a round of tests with keywords? Should we wait for 100 clicks on each keyword, see which ones have lead to the most sales (or rather, sales that are sustainable with the cost per click of that keyword), then drop the ones which aren't converting and put that budget onto the converting keywords? We realistically have a few hundred keywords/phrases we would like to test, but spending $100 per keyword/phrase is going to work out as quite an expensive test. It would be nice to be able to spend $5-10 per phrase, but I don't think the sample size would be great enough to determine anything usefully reliable. Another approach might be to setup all the keywords, and those that bring the most sales within x hours/days would be the ones we use. What is the common procedure with things like this? I know there are a plethora of companies that specialize in exactly this, but this is something we anticipate doing a lot in the future, so it would make sense to do it in house if at all possible.

• Google analytics set up with wrong domain

• Wrong resolution for Lightdm/GDM on Ubuntu 13.04 using HDMI

  I've tried all the solution I could find on the matter so far, but the error persists. My problem is that the login screen (both under gdm and lightdm) runs with the wrong resolution, even though all is fine when I log in. The error occurs solely when I have my HDMI cable connected to my other screen. The login screen resolution becomes 1024x768 (for my 1366x768 laptop screen) and mirrored on my screen, which is 1920x1080. I've had this issue on version 12.04 (the last one before I upgraded to 13.04), but I got it fixed by adding the xrandr commands on the begining of the /etc/gdm/Init/Default file. This doesn't seem to work anymore. I've also tried telling lightdm to run a script fixing the resolution with xrandr (by editing /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf), but lightdm crashes, and I'm forced to log in with low graphic settigs. Hint: when ubuntu is loading, the resolution starts OK, then goes bad right before the login screen is initialized. Does that mean that there's nothing wrong with my graphic cards? What do you think? From The Linux Kernel Primer: An ABI is a set of conventions that allows a linker to combine separately compiled modules into one unit without recompilation, such as calling conventions, machine interface, and operating-system interface. Among other things, an ABI defines the binary interface between these units. ... The benefits of conforming to an ABI are that it allows linking object files compiled by different compilers. From Wikipedia: an application binary interface (ABI) describes the low-level interface between an application (or any type of) program and the operating system or another application. ABIs cover details such as data type, size, and alignment; the calling convention, which controls how functions' arguments are passed and return values retrieved; the system call numbers and how an application should make system calls to the operating system; and in the case of a complete operating system ABI, the binary format of object files, program libraries and so on. I was wondering whether ABI depends on both the instruction set and the OS. Are the two all that ABI depends on? What kinds of role does ABI play in different stages of compilation: preprocessing, conversion of code from C to Assembly, conversion of code from Assembly to Machine code, and linking? From the first quote above, it seems to me that ABI is needed for only linking stage, not the other stages. Is it correct? When is ABI needed to be considered? Is ABI needed to be considered during programming in C, Assembly or other languages? If yes, how are ABI and API different? Or is it only for linker or compiler? Is ABI specified for/in machine code, Assembly language, and/or of C?

• Poor backlink profile - search rankings not updated for 2+ months

  I am carrying out some work on a website that is a PR2 with a few good quality, relevant backlinks (PR4-6). It has a presence on Twitter that is updated regularly, a Google Places listing, and listings on some decent directories (Qype etc). The site was rebuilt into Drupal 7 two months ago, with all the basics done - URL rewriting, XML Sitemap submitted to Google, and most importantly, good quality, structured content. I've noticed that Google is still showing "old" URL's from the previous version of the site that was ditched 8 weeks ago. I think the site may be penalised under the Penguin update, as a previous SEO company created many low quality links from link farms/directories. My question is what the correct way to deal with this is. Bing Webmaster Tools can "disavow" links, and I guess I can attempt to contact the link farms to have them removed. I've already submitted a request to Google to request that we have the penalty removed as we're trying to tidy up a bad history. We submit updated sitemaps to Google and Bing daily, and have built some further decent quality, relevant links. Is there anything further I can do?

• Usual Suspects: Typical 3rd Party Entities in E-Commerce [closed]

  I am doing some requirements/analysis for a web app that I'd like to build (Ruby/Java developer here). This web app would have a store front, shopping cart and would need to be totally compliant with all e-com best practices. It's amazing how much non-technical info comes up when you search for phrases like "how does e-commerce work", but very little comes up in the way of technical details. As such, I'm having extreme frustration finding answers to what I consider pretty straight-forward questions. I came here because I believe this question is not off-topic; if it is, please leave a comment as to why this question does not belong here and I will happily remove it myself (upvotes if your comment can point me to the correct place for this question!). So then: What 3rd parties will I need to work with to have a modern, web-compliant e-com site? So far I can account for a payment gateway provider like Authorize.net and an SSL certificate provider like Trustwave. Any others? What other standards besides PCI compliance will I be held to (besides governing laws, of course!)? Vulnerability scans: PCI compliance requires quarterly scans: if I'm a "Level 4" (low volume) Merchant does that still apply to me? Irregardless, my backend architecture is quite huge, with web servers, app servers, database, message brokers and more. Do each of these servers need to be scanned?!? If not what servers do need to get these quarterly scans? I usually hate to ask micro-questions inside of one large one, but these are so closely-related I just felt like asking them all separately would be spamming the site with too many petty questions. • Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes w/ Ethernet Unplugged + Wireless Drops (Acer Aspire 5516)

  Ubuntu 12.04-12.10 32/64 freezes or won't boot if the Ethernet cable is unplugged and will not hold a wireless connection. Here is my scenario... Laptop: Acer Aspire 5516 Wireless card: Broadcom BCM4312 Ubuntu 12.04 32/64 Issues Unity 3d won't load without the Ethernet cable plugged in. If I let it load with Ethernet plugged in, it will freeze once I disconnect the cable. Unity 2d will load without the Ethernet cable plugged. In Unity 2d, wireless cannot hold a connection. I can connect to a Wireless network, but when I try to use it (i.e. open a browser), it disconnects. I can reconnect by disabling wireless (uncheck Enable Wireless), re-enable wireless, and reconnect. But, it will disconnect again once I start using it. Ubuntu 12.10 Issues Since 12.10 only gives me the option to load 3d (I assume), I experience the same thing as the first issue in 12.04. Attempted Solutions Enable networking/LAN in BIOS Set LAN first in boot priority in BIOS Remove STA wireless driver (bcmwl-kernel-source) and install b43 low power driver (firmware-b43-lpphy-installer). Remove default Network Manager and install Wicd. So far, I have had no luck with fixing this issue. Does anyone have any further suggestions?

• Using Clojure instead of Python for scalability (multi core) reasons, good idea?

  After reading http://clojure.org/rationale and other performance comparisons between Clojure and many languages, I started to think that apart from ease of use, I shouldn't be coding in Python anymore, but in Clojure instead. Actually, I began to fill irresponsisble for not learning clojure seeing it's benefits. Does it make sense? Can't I make really efficient use of all cores using a more imperative language like Python, than a lisp dialect or other functional language? It seems that all the benefits of it come from using immutable data, can't I do just that in Python and have all the benefits? I once started to learn some Common Lisp, read and done almost all exercices from a book I borrowod from my university library (I found it to be pretty good, despite it's low popularity on Amazon). But, after a while, I got myself struggling to much to do some simple things. I think there's somethings that are more imperative in their nature, that makes it difficult to model those thins in a functional way, I guess. The thing is, is Python as powerful as Clojure for building applications that takes advantages of this new multi core future? Note that I don't think that using semaphores, lock mechanisms or other similar concurrency mechanism are good alternatives to Clojure 'automatic' parallelization.

• What should I recommend a small company looking for C# developers

  Here is the issue. I am a senior developer, and one of the start-ups I designed the system (management system/database/web) a long time ago, have grown and need software updates. I have left their system to another developer long time ago, but apparently he has left the job, and so they are asking me if I can suggest them where to find a new one. The problem is that the company has no clue that the IT is not cheap. They expect multiple features to be added for 40$, so that's an issue. Actually one of the reasons why I left the project when I did. Lots of expectations, little pay, also I know those people outside work, so I decided to avoided stressing the nonwork-relationships and left the project gracefully. Today they asked me for an advice, and I told them that the feature list they want is probably going to cost some if they'll get a senior developer for the job. So I guess their best bet is to find someone who loves coding and has just finished the school. Which would give someone a chance to code for money which is good for a student, and at the same time, allow the student to get some hands on experience. Then again, the system is not exactly 20 line console program, there is an MSSQL database, ASP.NET web page and content management system with all the AJAX stuff and some other things. So student straight out of school could have some problems with that. But, I thought about the issue some more, and I think that junior developer is a tricky deal, without mentoring, he can either screw up royally, or just do what's asked. Also, it seems no one is coming to interviews at all, which is weird, or maybe not. What should I suggest them?

• Splitting a tetris game apart - where to put time-management?

  I am creating a tetris game in C++ & SDL, and I'm trying to do it "good" by making it object-oriented and keeping scopes small. So far I have the following structure: A main with some lowlevel SDL set up and handling input A game class that keeps track of score and provides the interface for main (move block down, etc) A map class that keeps track of the current game field, which blocks are where. Used by the game class. A block class that consists of the current falling block, used by game. A renderer class abstracting low level SDL to a format where you render "tetris blocks". Used by map and block. Now I have a though time where to place the time-management of this game. For example, where should be decided when a block bumps the bottom of the screen how long it takes the current block locks in place and a new block spawns? I also have an other unrelated question, is there some place where you can find some standard data on tetris like standard score tables, rulesets, timings, etc?

• Maximum 5 minute battery life with Ubuntu 11.10 on HP laptop

  I apologise if this question is too similar to the numerous others already asked, but it seems that my difference in battery life is significantly more noticeable than others that have been reported. I recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my HP Pavilion dv6 laptop (which I purchased brand new just under one year ago). When running Windows 7 on this laptop, I have been able to get up to two and a half to three hours of battery life with wireless disabled and when running only Microsoft Word. However, when running Ubuntu, I am unable to use the laptop if it is not plugged in. Upon unplugging the fully-charged machine from the power cord, if I have wireless enabled, I immediately receive a notification that the battery levels are critically low and that shutdown is imminent. Even if I replace the power plug, the laptop shuts down within thirty seconds. If I disable wireless capability, I am able to run the laptop for an absolute maximum of five minutes on battery powers before receiving the same message. I have tried running with Jupiter on Power Saver mode, but to no noticeable effect. Ignoring the fact that I can't use my laptop without being attached to a power source, I really do enjoy using Ubuntu, and hence would greatly appreciate any help that can be offered.

• Ubuntu does not recognize my built-in monitor.

  I've recently discovered of a boot problem Ubuntu has with my laptop. I have successfully installed Ubuntu on two other computers, and I've never experienced this problem. What happens is, after the live boot CD loads, the screen goes completely blank. Although, I suspected that there was no problem booting, so I loaded with BIOS only, which worked perfectly fine. Of course, not being very proficient with this, I have no idea what needs to be done to fix the problem. I have switchable graphics cards(the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, and some low-end Intel card), and an Intel i5 quad core processor. I was booting with the Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit desktop distribution. If there's any more information you need from me, please let me know. EDIT: I was able to look into this a bit more, thanks to one of the comments provided, and I have some new information. Ubuntu does seem to be able to recognize both of my graphics cards. The problem I found was that, in the Xorg.0 log, it mentions that there were "no screens found." I'm using a notebook, so the screen is built in. Does anyone know of a way to get Ubuntu to recognize the monitor?

• 12.10 no audio via hdmi and video speeds up

  I have a laptop with an ati radeon 4200, on 12.04 everything worked fine, since upgrading to 12.10 I cannot get sound over the hdmi. When I switch to hdmi audio the video speeds up to about 2x. I can use the speakers in my laptop and watch video via hdmi with no problems. Things I have tried: Various tutorials to install the AMD/ATI drivers, all of which resulted in low graphics mode. Checked that everything is properly set in alsamixer, the sound utility and - installed pavucontrol and checked everything in there. Verified the output from cat /proc/asound/cards looks normal When I initially upgraded there was a plethora of problems which I believe were due to the old proprietary driver still being used but not compatible, after a few hours trying to fix that I decided just to back up and do a fresh install which works great except for the above stated problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! • How to manage many mobile device users at server side?

  I built a social Android application in which users can see other users around them by GPS location. At the beginning thing went well as I had low number of users, but now that I have increasing number of users (about 1500 +100 every day) it has revealed a major problem in my design. In my Google App Engine servlet I have static HashMap that holds all the users profiles objects, currently 1500 and this number will increase as more users register. Why I'm doing it? Every user that requests for the users around him compares his GPS with other users and checks if they are in his 10km radius. This happens every five minutes on average. Consequently, I can't get the users from db every time because GAE read/write operation quota will tear me apart. The problem with this design is? As the number of users increases, the Hashmap turns to null every 4-6 hours, I think that this time is getting shorter, but I'm not sure. I'm fixing this by reloading the users from the db every time I detect that it becomes null, but this causes DOS to my users for 30 sec, so I'm looking for better solution. I'm guessing that it happens because the size of the hashmap. Am I right? I have been advised to use a spatial database, but that means that I can't work with GAE any more and it means that I need to build my big server all over again and lose my existing DB. Is there something I can do with the existing tools? Thanks.

  Are there any mobile-friendly Credit Card billing solutions for mobile sites similar to Bango? The advantages of Bango I have seen compared to regular Credit Card solutions that make it considerably "mobile-friendly" are: 1) It does not require the user to enter their full name and billing address to make a payment. The user is only required to enter their Credit Card number, expiration date, and CVC code (if they are in the U.S., they will also have to enter their Zip Code). That is significantly less input than is normally required for Credit Card payments, which is a big plus on small mobile key pads. After a user makes an initial Credit Card payment, their details are stored by Bango, and the next time the user needs to make a payment with the same Credit Card, they just have to click a single link and it processes the payment on their stored Credit Card. Needless to say, this is very convenient for mobile users as it is analogous to Direct Carrier Billing as far as the user is concerned since they won't need to input any details. The downside with Bango is that their fees are higher than others, all payments must be processed via their site and branding, there is a high minimum ($1.99) and a low maximum ($30) on how much you can charge users, and you need to pay a monthly fee on top of the high transaction costs. It is due to the downsides mentioned above that I am looking for an alternative solution that also does the advantages 1) and 2) above. Is there anything like that? I looked at JunglePay and they do neither 1) nor 2).

• Remember way back when we had a free decompiler?

  I, like probably so many of the rest of you, was mortified when Reflector was sold to RedGate. I knew where it was going. Suddenly you had to install it instead of just download and run it. I had a deep down feeling that one of the most useful tools in my arsenal was about to become a corporate product and no longer belong to the world of free tools. Sure enough it did. For a while now I’ve limped by without my favorite decompiler. This was made a little easier by the fact that you can now debug into the .net framework, but I still missed Reflector. JetBrains, makers of the superawesome and well worth the cost ReSharper (no it’s not free) have made their own decompiler that is comparable with Reflector, and it’s free. It’s still a corporate product, and JetBrains isn’t exactly known for making free software, but for now we have an option back on the table until some other industrious developer makes the next Reflector. dotPeek can be downloaded here.  http://www.jetbrains.com/decompiler/
