• Is it a bad idea to list every function/method argument on a new line and why?

  I work with someone who, every time they call a function they put the arguments on a new line e.g. aFunction( byte1, short1, int1, int2, int3, int4, int5 ) ; I find this very annoying as it means the code isn't very compact, so I have to scan up and down more to actually make any sense of the logic. I'm interested to know whether this is actually bad practice and if so, how can I persuade them not to do it?

• How do remove the CD / DVD install as a source for apt-get packages when installing new features?

  I'm running a Ubuntu server (9.0.4 'Jaunty') as a VMware image. It's a real pain on the odd occasion I need to install a new package to have to fish out the install CD-ROM, and make it available to the VMware image so I can continue the package install. Is there any way to take the original installation media out of the list of source packages - I'm assuming all packages will be available on the internet. Thanks.

• How do I backup my Ubuntu 9.10 system and then restore it to a new machine with different hardware?

  I have a nicely configured Ubuntu 9.10 machine, with crossover linux (from Codeweavers) installed. I have the Nvidia drivers installed. Everything is just as I want it. Now I want to move to a new machine with different hardware: different sized hard drive, different size RAM, different video card, etc. I tried the technique suggested on Ubuntu forums, "Howto: Backup and restore your system!". The results: New system complains about swap not being found New system complains about not finding Nvidia hardware, and I can't open the System-Administration-Hardware Drivers application (i.e., /usr/bin/jockey-gtk) to fix the problem. As result of nvidia, X-Windows is throwing errors, and the on screen process for fixing X-Windows isn't working. How do I restore a backup of my old system, including my Crossover Linux installation, to a new machine with different hardware installed?

  Hi all, I was working gladly with my VM on my local Hyper-V server. But, after installing some updates on the host the system only show the famous blue screen. I couldn't start my host so I reinstalled it and configured as new Hyper-V server. My VM was in a another disk to prevent this happening but I don't know how to add it as a new VM on new server. In addition, this VM has various snapshots so, how can I add this VM to my new Hyper-V server? UPDATE: I can't do Export/Import because my server crashed before I can't do it.

• When Intel/AMD plan to use new CPU sockets? [closed]

  It is very expensive always to use most modern hardware especially buying new mainboard if only a new CPU is desired. It would be much better if one knows whether and when major CPU producers plan to change CPU sockets. Do you know when it is planed to change sockets the next time? I am particularly interested in not buying Intel i7 CPU if a new CPU will be released soon with not compatible pins.

  I accidentally renamed the username of my account on my Mac (running OS X 10.4.11) and tried renaming back to what it was but now I have two accounts (the one I want to use which has all my preferences, applications, mail boxes, etc., and the new one). Is it possible to copy my settings from my original account into this new user name? When I open my computer, it defaults to this new account, and I cannot gain access to all my work documents, mail settings etc.

• Automatic Maintenance Jobs in every PDB? New SPM Evolve Advisor Task in Oracle 12.1.0.2

  A customer checking out our slides from the OTN Tour in August 2014 asked me a finicky question the other day: "According to the documentation the Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor maintenance task gets executed only within the CDB$ROOT, but not within each PDB - but the slides are not clear here. So what is the truth?" Ok, that's good question. In my understanding all tasks will get executed within each PDB - that's why we recommend (based on experience) to break up the default maintenance windows when using Oracle Multitenant. Otherwise all PDBs will have the same maintenance windows, and guess what will happen when 25 PDBs start gathering object statistics at the same time ... The documentation indeed says: Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor data is stored in the root. It might have results about SQL statements executed in a PDB that were analyzed by the advisor, but these results are not included if the PDB is unplugged. A common user whose current container is the root can run SQL Tuning Advisor manually for SQL statements from any PDB. When a statement is tuned, it is tuned in any container that runs the statement. This sounds reasonable. But when we have a look into our PDBs or into the CDB_AUTOTASK_CLIENT view the result is different from what the doc says. This new task doesn't appear as a stand-alone job (client) in the maintenance window but runs as a sub-entity of the Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor task. • What are the IR codes the new Apple Remote (alu) uses?

  I would like to clone the new Apple Remote (infrared, second generation, aluminium) just for fun with a microcontroller. Most codes of the previous model can be found in the LIRC remote control database (all except the key combinations menu + <<,play, which unpair, change ID, pair the remote. I also don't know which bit encodes the battery status. It uses a modified 32 bit NEC protocol (reverse LIRC codes bytewise). But the new Apple remote uses two additional codes for the play and the new select button. I don't have a mac, so I can't brute force test codes either ;-) So if someone possesses such a remote and the ability of recording those two new buttons and three combinations I'd really appreciate it. If you can't run LIRC (or it gets confused by the new codes) and you don't have an oscilloscope or logic analyser, maybe you could hook up a photo diode to your sound input and record the codes with Audacity? Just hit record, hit each button and combo a few times, hit stop, upload the uncompressed WAV file to a sharing site, done. That'd be great!

• How do I get a new column from a Sharepoint list into Excel?

  I've been using Excel to process data from a Sharepoint list for a while now. However, I recently added a column to the Sharepoint table, and when I refresh the data in Excel, I don't get the new column. I perform a lot of calculations based on this data, so creating a new worksheet with the "new" Sharepoint list, moving the calculations and the pivots to THAT sheet is more hassle than I'd like to face. Is there a way to force Excel to display this new column that I've added? Maybe by modifying the connection string?

• Why can't I install Microsoft Office 2007 in Ubuntu 11.04?

  I am very new to Ubuntu and only just getting a hang of it, and my questions might sound stupid especially because I am a learner in terms of techie things as well. So because of the nature of work where everyone uses stupid Windows and Microsoft, I need to have access to MS Office 2007/2010 as documents with too many tables or images open all haywire in Libre Office (which has otherwise been great!). I have been reading up about installing MS Office through WINE/PlayonLinux, but have been unsuccessful so far. I downloaded a MS Office 2007 package from Pirate Bay, which I extracted into a folder. I tried numerous different ways to install through WINE and PlayonLinux, but will discuss the one which seems to be getting me somewhere. http://www.webupd8.org/2011/01/how-to-install-microsoft-office-2007-in.html ..... Initially, when I would click on the install button of MS Office, I get a message saying "The install location you selected does not have 1558MB free space. Free up space from the selected install location or choose a different install location". The install location in this case said "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office", which confused me as I don't have drives named as C, Z etc. I went to configure WINE and under the drives tab, created a drive named A with the path location /media/cd025f16-433b-4a90-abb6-bb7a025d0450/. Also the space thing is confusing as I have at least 450GB of unused space on my computer. anyways, when I selected the A drive for installation, the installation starts, but soon I get the following error message, "Office cannot find Office.en-us\OfficeLR.Cab. Browse to a valid installation source" .... The part saying "OfficeLR.Cab" have said different things after the Office bit every time I have made an attempt. When I select the Office.en-us sub-folder or any other folder within the folder where MS Office 2007 is saved, it says "invalid source"! I have been trying to get this sorted since 15hrs now (addictive!) and have learnt loads of things in the process, but have not managed to crack it. It might be something stupidly simple I am not aware off that is stopping it. I would really appreciate some help! Thanks a lot.. Also I am still getting used to the language, so might have many questions Also I am using Ubuntu 11.04 (tag 11.04). Also I think I don't have windows -- when my friend installed Ubuntu on my new laptop which had Windows 7, he was trying to keep windows in a separate partition, but something happened and windows was not there! • Have to run auto-negotiate between clients and switch - "old" switch works fine - "new" switch results in "port flapping"?

  I need some help understanding a problem we're having at work: We run Altiris/Deployment Solution and have to use auto-negotiate between client systems and our switches (Altiris apparently requires this for imaging, PXE boot and other functions). We have several areas with old wiring (Cat 3 & Cat 5) that have old 10/100 Cisco switches in them - and we can set these systems up to "auto/auto" (auto-negotiate on both the NIC and the switch port), and everything has been working fine. But - our networking crew changed out a couple of old switches for 10/100/1000 Cisco switches, and now - they are claiming that "auto/auto" won't work because the switches can't auto-negotiate the way the old 10/100 switches did - and that if we try to set the new gig switches to auto-negotiate, the switch port starts "port flapping", and shuts the port down. But - if we put the old switch back in - they work using "auto/auto" just fine - no port flapping. The networking crew is telling me that the problem is that we're putting "new switches" on "old wire", and that the old cabling can't/won't support the auto-negotiation with these new switches....??? There's something about this that doesn't make sense to me - can someone explain this to me? Or is our networking crew just doing something wrong in the configuration of these new switches? While will the old switches work "auto/auto", but the new switches won't?? HELP!!....and Thanks!! M

• Ubuntu 12.4.1 failing in vm both Vbox and Vmware on new HP Envy 4t-1000

  Brand new to Linux, getting frustrated trying to get an environment up with Ubuntu. My primary goal is to learn Linux and Apache/PHP development. I need to keep my Windows OS as main on my machine for work, so i'm trying to virtualize Ubuntu 12.4.1 without luck (many attempts). I have a new HP Envy 4t-1000 with 16gb ram, and 32 gb ssd caching with 500gb spindle hard drive. Graphics card is an Intel HD 3000 with AMD Radeon 7670M. With installing Ubuntu desktop in VBox, I'm getting this result: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51939 With VMware workstation 7 (patched), I complete the install of Ubuntu, it reboots, purple desktop briefly flashes then it drops to command line. I bought a beginning Ubuntu book, and it recommends trying to manually configure graphics if this happens. So I tried doing a safe boot holding shift - I get to the first screen (GRUB) loads fine, and I choose recovery mode. After choosing the recovery mode, I get the recovery mode options, and can arrow down to what the book suggests 'Run in fail safe graphic mode.' Once I select this option, I get a black screen with a large white dialogue box, at the top it says "The system is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself." Then there is an ok button way down at the bottom. When I select 'ok' I get a menu for a few options, book recommended 'reconfigure graphics.' When I try this, I get a menu of two options: 1) "Use generic (default) configuration or 2) use backup. I've tried both options several times, hitting ok just refreshes screen and nothing more. Rebooting at this point just goes back to command line as before. I don't know what to do at this point, I've spent too many hours this weekend trying in both VBox and VMware to get Ubuntu going. Isn't there like a very basic graphic display or something I can use to at least get into the desktop? I explored the GRUB some more, and tried to look at the startup and xserver logs - both are blank. No help there I guess? When I try to choose 'Edit the configuration file, then 'ok' screen just refreshes on same menu options, nothing happens. thx for any advice. I really need to focus on learning Linux, Apache and PHP, so perhaps Ubuntu just won't work on my hardware? Any other suggestions? I will need to virtualize - THANKS for any help/advice.

• Should I continue teaching old Java input methods alongside the new ones?

  I've been imparting a Java introduction course for several years. Some slides explain how to read from files and keyboard using BufferedReaders, InputStreams, FileInputStreamReaders etc. I'm adding slides explaining how to achieve this using more up to date approaches like Scanner. Should I leave out the old BufferedReaders, InputStreams and FileInputStreamReaders slides altogether, and teach only the new methods, or should I continue to teach these methods for the sake of completeness ? Will my students benefit from learning how to read from files and keyboard the old way ?

• How to disable automatic download of new podcast episodes in Rhythmbox?

  After adding a new podcast to Rhythmbox it starts downloading the newest episode automatically without asking the user for permission. I do find this behaviour pretty annoying especially when you have a lot of podcasts and are using 3G broadband to access the internet. Can you update the podcast feed and then choose manually which episode you want to download? Did not find this in the settings/preferences...

  In Firefox 25 (running on Windows 7), I have the following Startup settings: When Firefox starts = 'Show my home page' Home Page = (URL of the site I want) So when I click on the Home button, I get the right page. That's all good. However, when I open a new tab, I get the 'recently visited websites tiles' screen, i.e. this: Screenshot. How do I get Firefox to show my Home Page in new tabs as well?? Note: when I open a new Window, it works OK. I'm getting the Home Page there. The problem is just with New Tab!

• Why does Outlook 2010 give the message "Creating a new item from the selected items could take some time...are you sure you create a new item...?

  I'm using Outlook 2010 with Exchange 2007. I am moving emails from my Deleted Items folder to a user-created folder. When I move a "low" number of messages, say a few hundred or less, the operation completes successfully. When I move a "large" number of messages (in this example it's over 800) I get the message shown in the screenshot below. If I click Yes, a new email is generated and has links to all the emails I selected in the Attachment field. When I cancel that email, not only have the messages not moved but they appear to be deleted entirely. What does the message mean and why does it get presented? Why does clicking Yes do the behavior I described above?
