• Oracle Linux Friday Spotlight - November 8, 2013

  Happy Friday, everyone! This week, I want to highlight a really wonderful resource, the Oracle Linux Wiki on wikis.oracle.com. You can find a lot of in-depth technical information there and it’s probably worthy of a bookmark to check in on occasionally. One of my favorite types of content on the wiki is the do it yourself hands on labs. We do these at in person events like Oracle OpenWorld and also online for our Virutal SysAdmin Days, and those are great because you can get real-time assistance if you have any questions. But, if you’re eager to learn more about Oracle Linux and don’t want to wait for one of those events, you can step through these labs in your own time. All of the information you need is on the wiki. • Opensource package for securly allowing users to log in and provide information

  I have a site written in mostly php and html. I also have a sql database of personal information like names and addresses. I would like my users to be able to log in to my website with a login I can email or snail mail to them, and view and edit their information on my database. Users can currently enter information online I and store it in my database but they can't view or edit stored information. I can add the code to do this, but when I give users the ability to view information I suddenly have a lot more security concerns. Is there an open source package to deal with allowing users to do something like this? Or is there an established convention for this? I know this is a pretty basic question, and there might be some good literature about it that I have yet to find, so if someone can just point me in the direction of some of that information, or better yet give me firsthand some information about this that would be great.

• Solving programming problems or contributing code?

  What are the best skills to develop for a college graduate?? Should one spend hours/days trying to solve problems on codechef or topcoder or contribute code to open source organizations? My personal experience says solving problems teaches you how to make optimal code and learn new programming techniques (which someone else has researched and made available) to solve problems, whereas contributing to open source teaches you how to organize code (so others can work on it), use coding conventions and make "real" use of what you have learnt so far, blah blah!! Also another thing to note is that many companies are hiring today based on one's problem solving skills (Is this something I should worry about?) P.S. I have done little of online problem solving and little of code contribution (via GSoC), but left confused what I should continue doing (as doing both simultaneously isn't easy).

• The New My Oracle Support User Interface (HTML-based)

The new user interface is built using Oracle’s Application Development Framework and is our first step towards providing a single online support portal for our customers and partners; one that all users will transition to in the coming months. Further enhancements to the HTML-based user interface are planned for April 13, 2012. We will transition users of the standard Flash-based interface in the coming months. • Speaking at PASS 2012 Summit in Seattle #sqlpass

  I will deliver two sessions at the next PASS Summit 2012: one is title Inside DAX Query Plans and the other is Near Real-Time Analytics with xVelocity (without DirectQuery).These will be two sessions that require a lot of preparation and even if I have already much to say, I still have a long work to do this summer in order to go deeper in several details that I want to investigate for completing these sessions.I already look forward to come back in Seattle!In the meantime, you have to study SSAS Tabular and if you want to get a real jumpstart why not attending one of the next SSAS Tabular Workshop Online? We are working on more dates for this fall, but there are a few dates already scheduled.And, last but not least, the early Rough Cuts edition of our upcoming SSAS Tabular book is finally available here (really near to the final print)!

• Lenovo e530 no wireless Ubuntu 13.04

  For some reason my wireless will not work on my Lenovo e530. I am dual booting ubuntu and windows 8 and my wireless works in windows. I saw online that I should run rfkill. I did that but only bluetooth shows up. There is no difference when I press the wireless fn key either, but it does block bluetooth (as it should). I'm really wanting to get into Ubuntu but this is holding me back. To clarify the wireless device does not show at all after running rfkill.

• Google won't display site

  My website (markasoftware.getenjoyment.net) doesn't seem to be indexed properly by Google (I haven't tried other search engines). When I type in the URL of my site it appears right at the top of the list like it should. When I type in the entire contents of the title, however, the site doesn't appear! The title is quite long (Thermonuclear War Game Online: Thermonuclear War By Mark) and it has little (if any) competition. Have I been punished by Google for some reason, or is it something else? I have received zero hits from search engines. Can someone tell me why my site down't appear?

• SSL certificates - best bang for your buck [closed]

  I am in the process of setting up an online store. This is the first project I have attempted which will require a good level of security, so I recognise that an decent SSL certificate is a must. My current (albeit admittedly basic) understanding of the options are: DV SSL - more or less pointless, as provides no verification. OV SSL - better, as provides a basic level of organisational verification. EV SSL - 'better, full' verification, but much more expensive. As this is a new business venture, and budgets are tight, which option provides the best bang for my buck? I have read questions such as EV SSL Certificates - does anyone care? which suggest that EV certificates are a bit of a con. Does this mean that OV certificates offer better value for money, especially for new businesses with shallow pockets?

• XNA - Debugging/Testing Individual Sprites and Pixel Collision

  I ran through the first training on XNA where you make a shooter game. They did some thing that I would not do and I want to use their starting point to learn more things. I want to try better collision and adding a menu. I saw something online with the sonic physics where they have a frame by frame of sonic moving 1 pixel. See picture below. I am new to development, but I have been programming for years now. What would you guys suggest to try these different things out. How would I simulate a similar frame by frame testing as they do in the above picture? Thanks!

• Web stalker has purchased a domain name that uses my personal name, web page is defamatory [closed]

  We have been unsuccessful in persuading a stalker's website host to release the domain name he purchased which is my own personal name, e.g., PERSONALNAME.com. You will find my name below in the signature area. Look for yourself. On the one page that this domain name leades to is dreadful and defamatory material. No attorney has felt it worth their time to chase this issue down, and we cannot afford to go to a national or international dispute resolution group to bring this issue to WHOIS. Worse, the stalker is amoral and a psychopath: he would just love the attention. We've even consider trying to find someone to illegally hack into the webpage to at least redirect the domain pointers to my own professional website. This issue has continued now for two years and is affecting my professional reputations as potential clients have looked for me online. Is there any remedy? Your help and advice would be greatly welcomed.

• Lock Pages in Memory - not deprecated in Denali

  Please note an error in the SQL 2012 documentation for Lock Pages in Memory which indicates that it's deprecated. It's not. Locking pages in memory is a useful feature and there are no plans to deprecate it. It looks like it was accidently included on this page when we made changes to deprecate AWE.   On July 13, 2012, we plan to upgrade the My Oracle Support HTML-based user interface (UI) with additional functionality that will allow those users remaining on the Flash-based user interface to switch over to the HTML version. Our goal is to provide a single-online support portal so that all My Oracle Support users can benefit from the same features and functionality. Prior to July 13, 2012, users of Oracle On Demand, Oracle CRM On Demand, Taleo, and Oracle Configuration Manager should continue accessing the My Oracle Support Flash-based user interface. After July 13, 2012, the above features and functionality to support these users will be available on the HTML interface. All other users of My Oracle Support can make the switch now. Benefits of using the HTML-based user interface include: Streamlined, three-step process for initiating new Service Requests (SRs) Single, consistent workflow for both hardware and software incidents Enhanced personalization and filtering within the user interface New accessibility features (enabling screen readers, large fonts, etc.) Additionally, please note Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) will no longer be supported. • Devoxx Coming Up!

   Devoxx, the biggest Java conference in Europe, is  only a couple of days away. • RadCaptcha for ASP.NET AJAX audio feature available in Q1 2010

  Now that the Q1 2010 release is here, I want to bring your attention to a cool new feature in our RadCaptcha control for ASP.NET AJAX - audio support. Head on over to our online demos to see the feature in action. Enabling this on an existing CAPTCHA is easy - you just need to set the CaptchaImage-EnableCaptchaAudio property to true. Adding this feature to your site will allow blind or partially sighted people to use it as well. The audio support presents some very interesting possibilities for people who like to customize things. For example, you can replace the original audio files that come with the control (stored in the ~/App_Data/RadCaptcha/ folder in your web application) and add some custom ones - instead of hearing simply "alpha", you can make the control ask "enter the third letter in the word boat". • 12.04 in Virtualbox is keep losing my wireless connection

  I've Windows 7 as the Host OS, Ubuntu 12.04 as the guest and a Netgear WG111v2 as the USB Wireless device. Its connected to an open Wi-Fi network at work to bypass my works crazy strict filtering, When on the domain. I currently have network eth0 turned off in the virtualbox settings so the only network source would be through the USB device at wlan1. Its odd but the wireless seems extremely temperamental, I constantly have to ifconfig wlan down then ifconfig wlan1 up to get it back online. I know this might be super vague just curious if anyone has tried something like this or run into anything like it to point me in a direction I might not be seeing.

  Hi, I really really want to find this package. Because after I saw the youtube clip I realized it's just one of those things I must have done before I die. This tutorial would be great if the repository were online. My question is: Where can I find the file, and how can I install it without changing my current desktop? The project was called "project looking glass" and was released in 2007. It is now an "inactive open source project", according to its Wikipedia article. @Takkat found this VERY good live cd, hope it works.

• Doing affiliate program with shops who don't have a program already set up

  I am developing an online shop which has managed to agree with other shops to a comission per sale. Now, the problem, is these other shops don't have any kind of affiliate system. So my question is, is there any way we could arrange an easy way for this? They don't plan to develop anything as they are small shops, so... my only guess right now is to control on my site how many times the links to them have been clicked to have an estimate of potential clients, but don't know how they can know that user came through my site and purchased something.
