  We have the requirement to find a result in a collection of records based on a prioritised set of search criteria against a relational db (I'm talking indexed field matching here rather than text search). The way we are thinking about designing the query is to begin with a highly refined and specific set of criteria. If there are no results for this initial query we want to progressively reduce the criteria one by one in order of reducing priority, querying each time such a less specific set of criteria until we find a result we can accept. Alternatively, we have considered starting with a smaller set of criteria and increasing until we have reduced number of results down to the last set. What I would like to know is if an existing term to describe this type of query exists? So that we can look to model our own on existing patterns and use best practice.

  I am looking for a reference list for non-IT driven algorithmic patterns (which still can be helped with IT implementations of IT). An Example List would be: name; short desc; reference Travelling Salesman; find the shortest possible route on a multiple target path; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travelling_salesman_problem Ressource Disposition (aka Regulation); Distribute a limited/exceeding input on a given number output receivers based on distribution rules; http://database-programmer.blogspot.de/2010/12/critical-analysis-of-algorithm-sproc.html If there is no such list, but you instantly think of something specific, please 'put it on the desk'. Maybe I can compile something out of the input I get here (actually I am very frustrated as I did not find any such list via research by myself). Details on Scoping: I found it very hard to formulate what I want in a way everything is out that I do not need (which may be the issue why I did not find anything at google). There is a database centric definition for what I am looking for in the section 'Processes' of the second example link. That somehow fits, but the database focus sort of drifts away from the pattern thinking, which I have in mind. So here are my own thoughts around what's in and what's out: I am NOT looking for a foundational algo ref list, which is implemented as basis for any programming language. Eg. the php reference describes substr and strlen. That implements algos, but is not what I am looking for. the problem the algo does address would even exist, if there were no computers (or other IT components) the main focus of the algo is NOT to help other algo's chances are high, that there are implementions of the solution or any workaround without any IT support out there in the world however the algo could be benefitialy implemented/fully supported by a software application = means: the problem of the algo has to be addressed anyway, but running an algo implementation with software automates the process (that is why I posted it on stackoverflow and not somewhere else) typically such algo implementations have more than one input field value and more than one output field value - which implies it could not be implemented as simple function (which is fixed to produce not more than one output value) in a normalized data model often times such algo implementation outputs span accross multiple rows (sometimes multiple tables), whereby the number of output rows depends on the input paraters and rows in the table(s) at start time - which implies that any algo implementation/procedure must interact with a database (read and/or write) I am mainly looking for patterns, not for specific implementations. Example: The Travelling Salesman assumes any coordinates, however it does not say: You need a table targets with fields x and y. - however sometimes descriptions are focussed on examples with specific implementations very much - no worries, as long as the pattern gets clear

We are a .NET shop and none of us have any experience with iPhone development. I've also heard rumors that we are planning to hire more consultants in the future to help develop on other various platforms. How should I interview these consultants, considering that I have no experience with this type of development? Without regards to platform specific questions, what are the things I need to keep in mind when interviewing consultants? Normally when I interview candidates, I'll ask questions that I know the answer to. I would never ask a candidate something that I don't know how to answer. Since this is a different situation, what do I need to ask in order to make sure they are subject matter experts in their respective fields? Is it appropriate to ask specific questions that we'll need to eventually solve during the interview?

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32bit-i386) in my desktop PC. I need g77 compiler for some specific applications. The app can only be installed after having g77 compiler. This specific app is designed based on g77 fortran compiler and can't be used with gfortran which is the standard available compiler in 12.04 LTS. And guide me the procedure to install g77 in 12.04. I have been trying apt-get update & apt-get install g77 after changing the sources.list file. After processing I am able to install g77 but when i try to compile a fortran program, it shows error /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crt1.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crti.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgcc_s collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Please help me. I m struggling a lot to fix this.

• Is the UX affected negatively by fully cacheable pages?

  I want to have fully cacheable pages in my websites, but one cannot do that if they contain user-specific data, like the userbar or things in the UI that can change depending on the permissions the user has. So I was thinking whether it was possible to pull everything that is user-specific via ajax, and update the UI accordingly.   Let's assume we have an XmlDoc class that contains basic functionality for dealing with an XML data structure and saving/loading data to/from a file. Now we have several subclasses, A, B and C. They all inherit from XmlDoc and add component-specific methods for setting and getting lots of data. They are like "interfaces" but also add an implementation for the signatures. Finally, we have an ABCDoc class that joins all the "interfaces" via virtual multiple inheritence and adds some ABCDoc-specific stuff, such as using XMLDoc-methods to set an appropriate doc type. We may also have an ADoc class for only saving A data. How is this pattern called? "Interface" is not really the right word since interfaces usually do not contain an implementation. Bonus points for C++ code conventions.

  I'm in the process of learning the Android SDK and creating some projects to get a grasp on the system. The current project I'm working with works just fine but I'd like to get some advice about other ways I can go about designing it. Here's what it needs to do. When a text message is received from a specific number, it should fire off a toast message that repeats at a certain interval for a specific duration. To make this work, I created an SMS BroadcastReceiver and checked the incoming messages for the number I'm looking for. If found, an IntentService would be started that would pull out the interval and duration from saved shared prefs. The IntentService would then fire off a broadcast. The BroadcastReceiver for this would catch it and use the AlarmManager to handle the toast message repetitions. This all works just fine, but I'm wondering if there's a cleaner or more efficient way of going about doing this? Any suggestions or advice?

Questions that have arisen: From an SEO perspective, is there a benefit to including the brand name in the URL? Would it be more beneficial to buy a domain that relates generically to the INDUSTRY as opposed to the specific brand name? Would the benefits of an easy-to-remember, short domain outweigh any SEO benefits that might be gained by a longer, brand-specific domain?

• Workflow of sharing code for small teams

  Problem is, we have developed a small CMS, that is different per implementation (currently). Of course development of this is never complete. Sometimes, we are working on more than one project that implements it (by copying-pasting the code files of the CMS to each project), and we add a new feature that we want to share on other projects as well (these can be small ones too, ie a custom ajax JSON controller - we use MVC) What we want to do is quickly and uniformly share the code with all other projects, via a version control system (or something similar), and generally organize the workflow as we know this isn't a very good workflow that we have. What would you suggest? Also, at the momment, the software we use is Visual Studio 2010, so we are strongly considering TFS, but even if we get it we still don't know the ideal workflow, or even if TFS supports what we want to do. Edit: Also note, we have specific implementations that have modifications over the CMS base that we want to KEEP only in the project area. (ie: a specific feature that we DONT want to share with the base CMS code)

  I want to have specific methods with a specific pattern recognized at compile time and registered along with a specified id trough mixins in a parent class. ex.: take a method 'X' from a class with a predetermined id:5, what I want is that, in a mixin in a parent class, method X will be registered as a delegate with its id to be called later on by its id. What would be the best way to specify the Id considering I want the id to be of type int and only the specified methods to be registered? should I (if it is even possible) do it with a custom annotation pretty much like the @property but with an argument, like: @autoregister(id) void method(...) if it is possible to do it this way, an example or a link to the documentation on how to do it would be nice since I didn't find it in the documentation.

  This isn't a language-specific thing as far as I'm concerned. I was wondering what may be a quick way to change the COLOR of a certain on-screen element such as a button and its associated text. I would assume there is a trick to making a graphics engine so maybe individuals pixels or groups of sprites can have their colors easily shifted. A lot of game interface buttons and such have this so you know when an event like a click has occurred.   I have a specific programming need where I need to efficiently store large sorted sets in memory, query them for ranges, and intersect them against other sets that are also queried for ranged. I am looking at Redis, but I can't see a range slice command. MongoDB can only use 1 index, so it has to perform row-level scans, whereas I wish to process using columns that are intersected. I'm also looking at Counchbase, but can't easily determine from the documentation if it is suited to this. I know it uses Memcached, which is AFAIK not suited to this usage. Could anyone share potential solutions for this specific problem? EDIT For example, I need to perform the following: Get the IDs of all cars where the price is between 2000 and 3000, and intersect that will all cars where the engine capacity is between 3000 and 4000.

  We're currently building a new responsive website and while working on the site map figured that we don't want to show certain sections on mobile devices. This can be easily done by hiding the navigation parts using css/media queries. However, trouble is that the hidden sites would still show up in search engines' search results. If a user happens to click on one of these links she might happen to see a badly formatted page as we'd use desktop/tablet only code to show images and video. Is there any way to "influence" to exclude certain pages if the search is done on a mobile device? Do search engines crawl pages once or with a device specific view twice? Could we set a noindex meta tag for a specific device class?
