  • Is it possible to setup a DHCP server only for local virtual machines?

    I have a quick question. I have a bunch of virtual machines (VMWare Workstation) running on an Ubuntu server and have found that VMWare NAT (DHCP) service is unreliable and slow. I have to use NAT instead of bridging because the server is in a data-center that does not have DHCP and I don't have enough static IP's for all the VMs. Is it possible to setup the host (Ubuntu) to be a DHCP server but only for the local virtual machines? The server has 2 network interfaces, so I'd set eth0 to be a static IP, which connects to the outside world, and eth1 to listen for DHCP. Now, I am thinking if I don't want DHCP to broadcast I would just not connect a cable to eth1 and setup the VM's to use bridging on eth1. That way DHCP would not broadcast through my network but be listening on that interface. Would that setup work?

A WebApp or a GUI app will help. It needs to work on 12.04 or newer. Just to give an idea, I am looking for something similar to NetLimiter that gives me the control to know: How much Download/Upload speed an IP/Mac has (Assuming this is a LAN) Limit the Download/Upload speed for an IP/Mac. Option to say I what time a speed can be limited or not. Can cap when a certain amount has been downloaded/uploaded (Like 250MB per day)

  • Google Chrome Browser does not display the images from Local network or local host? [migrated]

    While developing and testing a site on local network I have noticed that while IE/FireFox would display the images coming from URL's like "http:\mypc" or "http:\localhost" or ip adress on the netwrok , google chrome on Galaxy, Windows Machine, or google Android will not display the images. After having burned too many hours trying various CSS, image src tag, html document description tricks, I have given up. During my search I found (and lost) the link to chrome forums regarding this issue that seemed to say it is just so by users. Anyone has any more information on weather it is possible to view images on local host/computer name on netwrok or ip adress?

    Using unity 11.04. I have a secondary monitor (actually two, one at home, one at work). The home twin monitor set up works perfect (Viewsonic monitor). At work, I get very buggy behaviour, such as full screen applications 'ghosting' when maximized, and other strange effects. I would like to try and completely reset the monitor configurations (not unity or compiz), before doing anything else. In 10.10 this would be accomplished: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

    I have a test server that is running Ubuntu Server in a windows network. Networking is configured as follows auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp hostname ca the command cat /etc/hostname returns ca. But when I use the command host 10.49.156.196 (its current IP address) from another machine on the network, it returns as follows: 196.156.49.10.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer owner-pc.xxxxx.xxx I can access the machine via SSH and browser using IP address, but not by name ca Any suggestions? I tried installing samba/nmbd as suggested in another post, but to no avail.

    Is there a way to get the grouped list of events (such as in Top events) which were triggered on pages matching a regular expression? I may add the Page secondary dimension in Top events and apply the regex filter but this way I won't get a grouped list. I may apply the filter to Events - Pages report but this way the events will be grouped only inside pages whilst I need global grouping. Any suggestions?

  • Why hamachi time-outs after 5 minutes or so?

    I installed hamachi and hamachi-gui on my girlfriend's pc and on my girlfriend's netbook. After 5 minutes or so (even if I keep using it during that time) it loses the connection, I mean I have to 'go offline' and then 'go online' again for it to see my ip again. If I don't and I ping my IP, it says 'Host unreachable'. If I connect with my Mac from the office the problem doesn't exist, so I wouldn't say it is a problem of my hamachi (server) installation, I'm tempted to say it is a problem of my girlfriend's connection, since it happens from her home, and we haven't tried yet to connect from another home with her setup.     How does ifconfig determine which network interface to use as the default when DHCP assigns a default route for each NIC? It seems like it's in a race-condition and I need to have a more reliable solution. Is there a setting in /etc/network/interfaces that could define the preferred gateway? I read about "metric" but that did not seem to function. 10.04 LTS Server with two NICs on a managed network. IP addresses are assigned via DHCP which I do not manage. eth0 is assigned a private NAT address; eth1 is assigned a public IP.

  • How to set up an rsync backup to Ubuntu securely?

    I have been following various other tutorials and blog posts on setting up a Ubuntu machine as a backup "server" (I'll call it a server, but it's just running Ubuntu desktop) that I push new files to with rsync. Right now, I am able to connect to the server from my laptop using rsync and ssh with an RSA key that I created and no password prompt when my laptop is connected to my home router that the server is also connected to. I would like to be able to send files from my laptop when I am away from home. Some of the tutorials I have looked at had some brief suggestions about security, but they didn't focus on them. What do I need to do to let my laptop with send files to the server without making it too easy for someone else to hack into the server? Here is what I have done so far: Ran ssh-keygen and ssh-copy-id to create a key pair for my laptop and server. Created a script on the server to write its public ip address to a file, encrypt the file, and upload to an ftp server I have access to (I know I could sign up for a free dynamic DNS account for this part, but since I have the ftp account and don't really need to make the ip publicly accessible I thought this might be better). Here are the things I have seen suggested: Port forwarding: I know I need to assign the server a fixed ip address on the router and then tell the router to forward a port or ports to it. Should I just use port 22 or choose a random port and use that? Turn on the firewall (ufw). Will this do anything, or will my router already block everything except the port I want? Run fail2ban. Are all of those things worth doing? Should I do anything else? Could I set up the server to allow connections with the RSA key only (and not with a password), or will fail2ban provide enough protection against malicious connection attempts? Is it possible to limit the kinds of connections the server allows (e.g. only ssh)? I hope this isn't too many questions. I am pretty new to Ubuntu (but use the shell and bash scripts on OSX). I don't need to have the absolute most secure set up. I'd like something that is reasonably secure without being so complicated that it could easily break in a way that would be hard for me to fix.

    I have set up a web server in my Windows 7 with easyPHP. The website works fine when I browse the locally via localhost or 127.0.0.1. But, unable to open the site from another computer which is in the same LAN or in connected to my LAN. My local IP is in the 10.x.x.x range. The firewall turned off on my private network. I've also tried by changing Listen 127.0.0.1:80 to Listen 80 In httpd.conf but still i'm unable to access the media wiki from other machines. Unable to browse the pages from other machines using localhost or using IP address (Ex: 10.x.x.x). Could you please let me know your suggestions and comments?

    I will be building a (wordpress) web site. While I am developing, other team members will be pushing content. I'd like to have it hidden from google while under development. It will be hosted on godaddy. I have thought of not pointing the domain name to it until live and using "preview dns", or buying a static IP during development. Or hosting dev site in a sub-directory ("/dev/") until ready and then moving it up a level. If in the dev directory I'd add htaccess or robots.txt to not crawl. Is any of this a bad idea? Will google penalize for any of this - like search by IP and then associate that with the domain later on? Any better ideas?

    I've installed phpBB Forums last week and the past 2 days I've been getting users sign up and posting spam chinese emails on each topic. I have:- Added captcha on registration Made sure users have to verify subscription by email before allowing to post What else can I do to stop this from happening? I've banned their IP addresses but this doesn't stop them from using a proxy to keep spamming the forums. I've read I can block all chinese IP addresses through ACP but is this the best step to block all this? Seems to be all chinese spam at the minute, any help would be much appreciated.

    On mac I would use Elastics (http://tundrabot.com/elastics) To kind of, monitor my EC2 instances. Most important to me was that it worked across several accounts and that it allowed me to connect to a running instance via ssh or RDP. This was the only real feature I care about. I can not always keep the IP address of the server that is running because ec2 is elastic, and it changes frequently. Is there any tool, like Elastics for linux/unity? Again it should support several accounts and be able to give me the IP addresses of the instance I select.

    Possible Duplicate: How do you manage your knowledge base? What do you use for personal note taking to keep track of everything you learn? Are you always Googling or searching StackOverflow to answer the same questions? Or searching for and copying and pasting existing code? I feel like I have a poor memory, especially remembering things like syntax. Are there any knowledge management systems that would work well for a programming language or operating system? It would be great if there were a way to save everything I learn in an easy to search system. Does such a thing exist? Maybe you would be able to search by question (How to sort an array?, How to set static IP?), or by tag (sort, array, enumeration, iterator, IP). I know it would be easy to develop my own system, but I thought it would be great to learn what works for other people.

  • Dialog created after first becomes unresponsive unless created first?

    After creating the initial dialog box that works perfectly fine, I create another dialog box when the Join Game button is pressed. The dialog box is created and show successfully, however I am unable to type in the edit box or even press or exit the dialog. Does anyone understand how to fix this or why it happens? I made sure the dialog box itself was not the problem by creating and displaying it from the main loop in the application. It worked fine when I created it that way. So why does it error when being created from another dialog? My code is below.     I've got a ISPconfig 3 production server set up, running Ubuntu Server 9.04. My e-mail gets delivered ok to almost every other server I send mail to except for one (smtp.chello.nl which bounces my email). In my /var/log/mail.err I found the below error. I did an SMTP check on mxtools.com and got the following: OK - Not an open relay OK - 0 seconds - Good on Connection time OK - 1.482 seconds - Good on Transaction time OK - 83.161.xx.xx resolves to a83-161-xx-xx.xxx.xxx.nl WARNING - Reverse DNS does not match SMTP Banner Update: My IP is static.

    Question: I need to get DNS configured to point a subdomain from one domain (which I will generally not be controlling) to another subdomain on a different domain name. Testing this process using a simple CNAME entry keeps pointing to the primary domain and not the subdomain where it should be going. This is the scenario; (newdomain.com is in my control) cdn.xyz.com should display content from this subdomain subdomain.newdomain.com It is instead displaying content from newdomain.com (not the subdomain sub domain) cdn.xyz.com/page.htm displays content from newdomain.com/page.htm although what I need is it to display content from subdomain.newdomain.com/page.htm Other Background: setup is between two different servers with different IP ranges although DNS cluster is on between all servers the newdomain.com is set up with its own unique IP (which is on the A records for the subdomains, the subdomains work as expected/normal) the DNS entry is correct (cdn CNAME subdomain.newdomain.com.) ie the end period is included a DNS lookup on the CNAME externally reports back as subdomain.newdomain.com. as the record Does anyone know what DNS entries I am missing to get this working correctly ? Note: I do not want to just put a redirect between domains as I need the content of subdomain.newdomain.com/content.html to be visible via the URL of cdn.xyz.com/content.html also I can just use some redirects on newdomain.com to achieve what I am after but would prefer to just get the DNS correct.
