• How can I remove gradients from Elementary theme?

  I really don't like the gradients in the Elementary theme and I was wondering if there is a way to remove them from applications like Nautilus-Elementary, Postler, Dexter, etc. I've tried commenting out the Apps/[Application].rc in /usr/share/themes/elementary/gtk-2.0/gtkrc but it doesn't work. It still leaves the gradients in their place. I'm a big fan of the other controls in the theme: the scroll bar, the way it borders gedit and the buttons, and I'd like to keep these features, but I don't like the way it styles its windows. EDIT: The gradients I'm talking about are the ones at the top of the window. Some examples: Nautilus-Elementary: Postler: Rhythmbbox: Transmission: I'd like to create a sort of matte look, similar to this, which was done using Orta: Nautilus-Elementary: Postler: Rhythmbox: Transmission: I'd like a flat color, preferably without the line separating the top part of the application with the bottom.

  There are many grids and framework to choose from. A Google search for CSS frameworks will return a dozen articles that themselves list a number of frameworks to choose from. When it comes to choosing one, it's easy to be lost without having an intimate knowledge of all of them. What are the main factors that go into choosing a CSS framework, and how will those choices map to certain frameworks? More generally, how does one choose a CSS framework? Note 1: I'm using "grid" and "framework" almost interchangeably here, but there is probably one I should use over the other. Corrections on this are welcome. Note 2: I am well aware that some choices will depend on taste and accordingly, this question can turn into a "best of" contest/subjective topic. I'm trying to keep it as answerable as possible, as I'm pretty sure many have this problem/question of choosing a framework and an answer to that would benefit the community. • Unindexing my tumblr blogs content and moving it to another tumblr blog

  ive been writing a tumblr blog for the past yr or so, ive writen about 300 articles, but now i need to move the blog to another site. (before it was running under blog.mysite.com and i now want it to run under blog.my*new*site.com) I want to keep the archived articles and have them on the new site, so what i was hoping to do was export the blog from tumblr, go into webmaster tools remove all the blogs indexed urls from google webmaster, then make a new tumblr blog and import the posts. Would google see this as new content as ive deleted their indexed copy ? Could i just move the mapping of the tumblr blog to the new subdomain, but in doing this i would lose all the pr and it would still look like duplicate content whats the best way to approach this ?

• What tasks should an Architect NOT do or limit to be effective?

  There are plenty of questions/answers about what an architect does, but what should someone in an Architect role NOT do? What are the boundaries/limits to maintain to be an effective Architect? I'm thinking here of Architect vs Developer and Architect vs Project Manager For example, I'm finding myself in a role where my title is Architect but I am also the coding/development lead and project manager on multiple small enterprise projects. I'm struggling with all the task switching and now I want to limit task switching. Trying to wear every hat just isn't working. What tasks should an Architect not do at all? What tasks should an Architect limit? I do think an Architect needs to keep coding, but how to define an appropriate limit for coding work?

• What are the valid DepthBuffer Texture formats in DirectX 11? And which are also valid for a staging resource?

  I am trying to read the contents of the depth buffer into main memory so that my CPU side code can do Some Stuff™ with it. I am attempting to do this by creating a staging resource which can be read by the CPU, which I will copy the contents of the depth buffer into before reading it. I keep encountering errors however, because of, I believe, incompatibilities between the resource format and the view formats. Threads like these lead me to believe it is possible in DX11 to access the depth buffer as a resource, and that I can create a resource with a typeless format and have it interpreted in the view as another, but I cannot get it to work. What are the valid formats for the resource to be used as the depth buffer? Which of these are also valid for a CPU accessible staging resource?

• Manage Your Amazon S3 Account with CloudBerry Explorer

  If you have an Amazon S3 account you’re using to backup your data, you might want an easy way to manage it. CloudBerry Explorer is a free app that runs on your desktop an provides an easy way to manage your S3 account. Installation and Setup Just download and install the application with the defaults. When the application launches you’ll be prompted to enter in your username and email to get a registration key. Or you can continue on by clicking Register later. Now you will want to set up your Amazon S3 account. Click on File \ Amazon S3 Accounts. Double-click on the New Account icon.   Next enter in your Amazon account Access and Secret keys, select SSL if you want, then click the Test Connection button. Provided everything was entered correctly, you’ll see the Connection Success screen, just close out of it. Browse and Manage files Once you have your account setup through the Explorer, you can start viewing and managing your files on S3. The left pane shows your S3 buckets and stored files, while the right side shows your local computer. This allows you to manage your files in your Amazon S3 buckets directly from your desktop! It’s very easy to use, and you can drag and drop files from your computer to the S3 account or vice versa. There is also the ability to transfer files between Amazon S3 accounts from within the explorer. Go into Tools and Content Types and you can control the file types by adding, removing, or editing them. If you end up messing something up along the lines, you can always select Reset to defaults and everything will be back to normal. There is a multiple tabbed view so you can easily keep track of your different accounts and local machine. It allows the ability to create new storage buckets directly in the Explorer. Or you can delete buckets as well… Different actions can be accessed from the toolbars or by right-clicking and selecting from the context menu. Here we see a cool option that lets you move your data inside Amazon S3. It is faster and doesn’t cost money by moving the files to your computer first, then to another account. However, if you want data moved to your local machine first, you have that option as well.   Not all features are available in the free version, and if it’s not, you’ll be prompted to purchase a license for the Pro version. We will have a comprehensive review of the Pro version in the near future.    If you ever need help with CloudBerry Explorer, go to Tools \ Diagnostics. It will run a quick diagnostics check and you can send the information to the CloudBerry team for assistance. Delete Files from Amazon S3 To delete a file from you Amazon S3 account, simply highlight the files or folder you want to get rid of then click Delete on the toolbar. You can also right-click the file and select Delete from the Context Menu. Click Yes to the confirmation dialog box… Then you can watch the progress as your files are deleted in the bottom section of the explorer. Conclusion CloudBerry Explorer free version has several neat features that will allow you easy and basic control over you Amazon S3 account. The free version may be enough for basic users, but power users will want to upgrade to the pro version, as it includes a lot more features. Using the free version allows you to get a feel for what CloudBerry Explorer has to offer, and is a good starting point. Keep in mind that Amazon S3 is introducing Reduced Redundancy Storage which will lower the price of data stored. The price drops from $0.15 per GB to only $0.10 per GB.   I have seen a couple of site which has high number of hits. They are mostly tutorial sites and blogs that address software issue/errors. I wonder if the kewybord "blog" has a very positive effect in SEO? In my own site, I have install word press in root folder to avoid any blog keyword. I also did this to keep urls shallow (deeper url are not good for SEO). But I may want to think on it again. The sites I am referring too are http://blog.sqlauthority.com http://veerasundar.com/blog/2011/11/making-xampp-to-serve-any-directory-outside-htdocs/ I know there are standard (sort of) class names or ID that identify different contents and makes it easier for the search engine to identify contents like, "container", "menu". The use of word "blog" would mean this is about dicussing/tutoring something and have a very positive effect on SEO?

• How to change tooltip background color in Unity?

  In a lot of applications the tooltips are just plain ugly (White text on black background, way too much contrast) or even unreadable (black or dark blue text (Hyperlinks) on black background). I want to change the background color of the tooltips to some medium gray or even some yellow or something like that, maybe even something semi-transparent. Here is a screenshot of Eclipse which displays some source code in a tool tip with black text on black background: Switching to a different theme (Something other than Ambiance or Radiance) helps but I like Ambiance and I want to keep it. It's just this darn tooltip color which is absolutely unacceptable. I found several solutions for older Ubuntu versions but they no longer work with Unity in Ubuntu 11.10 because I can't find any function to customize the Ambiance or Radiance theme. So how do I do that in the current Ubuntu version?

• Recovery from URL structure change?

  in July this year, we have changed the URL structure of the website from: Post: domain.com/blog/post/986/dance/heart-beats-dance-video-by-chinatsu/ Category: domain.com/blog/index/cosplay/ to Post: domain.com/dance/heart-beats-dance-video-by-chinatsu-986/ Category: domain.com/cosplay/ Everything was (supposedly) properly redirected with 301 redirects and it first seemed that the traffic returned after a couple of days, but it has now been close to 2 months and things keep going worse although Google is slowly indexing the changes. What is worrying me even more is that the Pages crawled per day from Webmaster Tools started drastically dropping a few days ago and has just reached a new low in months (from over 2000 to 700). Should I be worried or will things sort out eventually?

• LWJGL - Continuous key press event without delay

  I am checking for key presses and then based on the keys pressed I am moving a square around the screen. I am setting booleans for the keys WASD. But , Whenever I try to keep the key down , it takes a while till it moves continuously (Just a half second stop after a single move.) Any way to get rid of that and make it be "smooth"?   Yes, I read this article. But my questions are: I would like to try this, but I see they've written there something with "gnome" in the script. In my Ubuntu, 13.04, I have Unity. What do I do? I would have to do this for four x four keyboard layouts (to have 13 keyboard layouts). Your script, however, is designed for two x four keyboard layouts. How do I get the four x four? I would really appreciate your tips and hints on this. And I would kindly ask you to keep it simple, if possible, because I'm really no expert in both Ubuntu and computers in general.

  So we wish to host some pages on a new server w/ apache2, and embed some of our old content & functionality from another server w/ lighttpd in an iframe. I'm looking at this configuration from the apache docs (http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/examples.html#page-header) under "Using Virtual_host and mod_proxy" together. <VirtualHost *:*> ProxyPreserveHost On ProxyPass / http://192.168.111.2/ ProxyPassReverse / http://192.168.111.2/ ServerName hostname.example.com </VirtualHost> The only issue is that I want to proxy only on a subdomain, or even better, if I can keep the top domain and proxy only if the url contains a particular path ie. "/myprocess.php". So in essence the DNS will point to the apache2 as the "master router".

  I have been debating whether to get a nexus 5 phone since it came out. My only fear is that I won't like android. I love ubuntu, I know that I'd love ubuntu. So I have a few question related to Ubuntu Touch: Is it easy or possible to switch between Ubuntu Touch and Android? Would I have to keep hacking the phone? Can I dual boot them? Would I lose my data every time I switch? The nexus 5 isn't mentioned here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices Does that mean it simply won't work if I follow the porting instructions? Would I have to do a bit of hacking? Has anyone got it working? Will it eventually be supported?

• Migration from XNA to SharpDX

  My fear is that XNA has reached the end of the road. To keep up with the latest technology a shift to another game framework might be needed. We have many games in a large codebase, all based on XNA. My question is, how much work would it be to migrate to SharpDX and are there other possibilities? Our code base mainly uses basic 3D rendering and the SpriteBatch, no fancy shader stuff. Update: I should have mentioned we only use 2.5D, we have a simple engine that builds textured quads to render text and animated sprites. Also for sound we use XACT (what else..) with some effects.

  I had reason to meet up with someone I don't see very often a bit ago. In the course of the conversation, he told me he bought an iPad. I don't know if I was expected to ooh and ahh, but I didn't. After he finished saying how cool it was and how much he and his wife liked it, I commented "no Flash and no Silverlight" after which followed this: Him: "You don't need it, HTML5 can do everything Flash and Silverlight does" Me: "Wait... you're telling me that the iPad converts existing Flash content into HTML5 and then renders it?" Him: "No, but once all the existing sites are converted to HTML 5 it'll be fine and we don't need Flash... or Silverlight" 'all the existing sites' ... huh ... I didn't get a notice, maybe they're doing them alphabetically or something :) Ok Spanky... you keep drinking that Kool-Aide from Steve, I've got mine... it's blue with Silverlight:

• Is the Mailchimp API available in other languages?

  I'm using the Mailchimp API in combination with PHP and jQuery to provide the subscribing/unsubscribing-actions on a website via Ajax. On errors with user data you get useful messages like "Invalid Email Address", "[email protected] is already subscribed to list x. Click here to update your profile." or "There is no record of "[email protected]" in the database". For sure I want to keep theses messages, but is there a way I can get them in other languages (in particular in German)? How would I achieve this? I wasn't able to find anything about in the Mailchimp docs. I wouldn't like to translate them myself...

• XAudio2 - Multiple instances of the same sound

  Right now, I'm adding a rudimentary sound engine to my game. So far, I am able to load in a WAV file and play it once, then free up the memory when I close the game. However, the game crashes with a nice ArgumentOutOfBoundsException when I try to play another sound instance. Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: readLength I'm following this tutorial pretty much exactly, but I still keep getting the aforementioned error. • How important is it for a programmer to have an online presence?

  I've noticed more and more mentions (both in posts here and in actual job descriptions) of programmers's "portfolios" - typically their public profiles on sites such as this, github, etc. How important is this, and would companies (startups in particular) reject (or immediately discard withouth even interviewing) otherwise outstanding candidates who don't have an online presence? Personally, I prefer to keep a very low profile online. My name here cannot identify me, and I have other handles for other sites. I have a very spartan (and completely private) Facebook page. I do code on my own but the code lives in local repositories. In general, the less information online about me, the better. I could see a designer needing some sort of online portfolio, but for a programmer, is this really a big negative when job-searching?
