  • How to setup a DotNetNuke Development Environment with Source Control?

    My team is developing a new DotNetNuke web application and would like to know what is recommended to setup a development environment with source control and automated builds? We would like to keep the DNN source code separate from our custom modules and extensions source code. The DotNetNuke Compiled Module template for Visual Studio wants us to store the source code in the DesktopModules directory of the DNN source code and output to the DNN source code bin directory. Is this the recommended structure? I would rather keep the files in different locations, but then it becomes more difficult to run and debug locally as it would require an install of the module for each change. Also, how should an automated build deploy any changes? How have others set this up? Is there a recommended best practice?

  • What helpful tactics have you employed to keep your development team on-track?

    I realize that this is a subjective question, so I've marked it as a community wiki. I think that it is pretty specific to programming teams, though, so I've posted it here as opposed to somewhere else. I'm leading a small game development team (four people) as a side project. We are a disjoint team, with everyone in different places, but we do have some of the mainstays of an organized team. Source Control Continuous Integration Bug Tracking Document Workspace Regular Meetings Calendar / Schedule How do you keep your small, disjoint teams on-track? I tend to agree with Joel's opinion about when and how to micromanage and know that my team is motivated, but it can be easy to fall off-course when everyone isn't connected in a physical way and doesn't see what other people on the team are doing. Suggestions, feedback, or criticisms are welcome! Edit: I'm managing the team; I'm not looking for automated tools or anything to do my job for me, just ideas for approach or process that might help everyone feel more "connected" and involved.

    I might be missing something here but am unable to understand the true purpose of link shortener services like bit.ly or is it just a lot of hype! Truly if you type nyti.ms on your URL bar on the browser it takes you to www.nytimes.com, but still what is so hard in typing "nytimes.com! which is far much comprehensible to read and understand leave alone to remember! Does shortening URL serve any purpose in web development? Why should someone want use obscure shortened URL?

  • Deploy to web container, bundle web container or embed web container...

    I am developing an application that needs to be as simple as possible to install for the end user. While the end users will likely be experience Linux users (or sales engineers), they don't really know anything about Tomcat, Jetty, etc, nor do I think they should. So I see 3 ways to deploy our applications. I should also state that this is the first app that I have had to deploy that had a web interface, so I haven't really faced this question before. First is to deploy the application into an existing web container. Since we only deploy to Suse or RedHat this seems easy enough to do. However, we're not big on the idea of multiple apps running in one web container. It makes it harder to take down just one app. The next option is to just bundle Tomcat or Jetty and have the startup/shutdown scripts launch our bundled web container. Or 3rd, embed.. This will probably provide the same user experience as the second option. I'm curious what others do when faced with this problem to make it as fool proof as possible on the end user. I've almost ruled out deploying into an existing web container as we often like to set per application resource limits and CPU affinity, which I believe would affect all apps deployed into a web container/app server and not just a specific application.     Hi, I'm working as a QA (Software Tester with 3 years of experience) and was thinking of getting some certifications for my career. I already have the ISTQB certification and was thinking of doing SCJP along with MCTS 70-433 certification (SQL Server 2008 Database Development) as the next move. So my question is this: 1) Who should go for the 70-433 certification and is it worth going for, for a career in QA? 2) What would be a good book to study for this? I'm just looking for a simple book that is written just to the point and not much bloated up such as technical bibles. Not that they aren't good but they just take up too much of time. Maybe something similar to the one written by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates for SCJP. It is written in a very simple language and is enough to do SCJP. Edit: I'm still searching for answers to this.   • How to copy a bunch of pages? Is there a 3rd party tool?

    (I asked the following question at the DNN forum, and also at snowcovered. Nobody knew of such an obvious time-saver being for sale. I'm posting here in case anybody knows of a freeware module that might do this.) By "groups of dnn pages", I mean pages that form a hierarchy (not necessary a hierarchy that is headed with a page at the same level as the Home page.) I know that I can copy web pages, one by one, using the admin login via the web-based dnn interface. But, I'd prefer a script or wizard, of some sort (that runs scripts behind the scenes) that can allow me to 1) specify a web page that I want to copy (along with the hierarchy of pages under it) 2) specify the names and titles of the new top-level pages 3) specify whether the contained modules of the top-level page that I want to copy is to be : ( ) New ( ) Copy ( ) Reference (as in the web-based interface) 4) repeat 3) for each of the source pages in the hierarchy that I want to copy You might say that I am looking to do something similar to creating a portal web site based on a template, except that it's not an entirely new website - instead it's a section of the current web site.     I am from India. I was a Mainframe developer for first 2 years of my IT career and then shifted to Microsoft .Net and completed 3 years as of now. In these 3 years as a .Net developer i have worked only in core .Net skills like Asp .Net, Sql Server with C# .Net. I never worked in advance skills like Web Services or WCF or silverlight etc. In current world market scenario, I feel Sharepoint experience weighs more than the WCF, Web Services work experience for a .Net Developer.(Please correct if wrong). So i am planning to study Sharepoint through some training centre and complete a Sharepoint certification. The main reason for me to go for Sharepoint is that i feel it is a niche skill and it will help me to get a job in abroad location in future. Please let me know whether sharepoint can help me to get a job in foreign location. I would also like to know whether, Is it possible to master Sharepoint without any experience in skills like WCF, Web Services etc? Is it possible to get a sharepoint job just with knowledge and certification in it? Incase if sharepoint will not offer me career growth, then can you please suggest me the skills which will offer great career growth (like foreign jobs) for me as a .Net developer?

    It is very important to do backup of your MySql database, you will probably realize it when it is too late. A lot of web applications use MySql for storing the content. This can be blogs, and a lot of other things. When you have all your content as html files on your web server it is very easy to keep them safe from crashes, you just have a copy of them on your own PC and then upload them again after the web server is restored after the crash. All the content in the MySql database must also be backed up. If you have spent a lot of time making the content and it is only stored in the Mysql server, you will feel very bad if it gets lost for ever. Backing it up once every month or so makes sure you never loose too much of your work in case of a server crash, and it will make you sleep better at night. It is easy and fast, so there is no reason for not doing it. Step 1: Log into phpMyAdmin on your server. Step2: You can select the database that you would like to backup from the drop-down menu called Database. Step 3: A new page will be loaded in phpMyAdmin showing the selected database. In order to proceed with the backup click on the Export tab. Step 4: The options that you should select apart from the default ones are Save as file which will save the file locally to your computer in an .sql format and Add DROP TABLE which will add the drop table functionality if the table already exists in the database backup as shown below. Step 5: Click on the Go button to start the export/backup procedure for your database. A download window will pop up prompting for the exact place where you would like to save the file on your local computer. It is possible that the download starts automatically. This depends on your browser’s settings.

  • Why would he say "We don't want to support MVC3"?

    I work in a small shop at a fairly big company doing intranet web applications. By small, I mean there is 1 other guy in my position... and he graduated with me last December. (we aren't the only IT, but the only ones in our field) We are switching out an old COBOL system and converting it's only used application suite to a Web App. My company has contracted to a Web Application firm to help with this process who has chosen ASP.NET MVC, during one of the important meetings I asked if they will be using MVC2 or MVC3. Their lead developer said: "MVC2, we don't want to support MVC3. haha" My question is, why is this? This was several months ago and I've been doing extensive and self training gearing up for the MVC switch. From everything I am understanding, MVC3 is just like MVC2 if you don't use Razor and it fixes a number of smaller bugs that MVC2 had. So in my eyes, I can't see any reason to NOT use MCV3. There has to be something I'm missing. Since I don't really have any mentors to turn to in the real world, I'm coming here. What problems are there with MVC3 that might possibly lead him to say this that I'm missing?

  • 2 year cis degree and in school for computer science what can I do?

    Hi I am 29 and have a recent 2 cis year degree from a community college , an A+ certification , and meager experience with web stuff ( Java , Javascript , php ) while in my 1 year help desk internship. In all the programming classes I was able to blow through the homework easily even while other students were panicking and dropping. I think I have managed to avoid the most atrocious noob/self taught mistakes ( spaghetti code etc) by just doing research before starting something and trying to keep good design in mind. Even so I'd have to make heavy use of references to crawl through even simple projects that would result in fully finished useful applications. I need a job now and I am tired of the slow pace of the classes and would love to get any kind of practical experience I could. The problem is that I am not sure what I should be trying to do. I have a very strong preference for application programming or at least anything light on design and preferably pretty low level. If I can't do that then anything technology related , for example help desk would be better than nothing. I live near Raleigh NC. Am I qualified for anything that could contribute to coding (C++ or Java ) experience or even web development though I don't really like it. Would web development experience help. If not is there anything I could read or do that could help? Is the help desk my only choice? If it is, are there any relatively quick certifications or anything similar that would help while I am waiting? Sorry about the long multi-part question. Thanks for reading.

  • Delphi native Web Service applications not working. IIS 7 seems to be stripping the pathinfo

    I've run into an interesting problem that I never encountered with XP or IIS 6. Basically, I can't get a native Delphi (WebBroker) Web service server to work with a native Web service client in Windows 7 64-bit. Here's the most basic breakdown. If I create a new Web service application in Delphi 2010 (or any version, back to Delphi 7), and access it using IE 8, I can see the HTML that the WSDLHTMLPublish component creates, but I can never get to the SOAP. In the same way, the WSDL Importer cannot get to the SOAP either. (I have IIS 7 configured to use a 32-bit application pool, and I have created a working Script Map to the Handler Mappings. In short, the 32-bit ISAPI Web service is running). For example, I have a simple Web service server named TestService (created using the default sample interface generated when you create a new Web service server). I installed it in a virtual directory named scripts. If I enter http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll/wsdl, IIS 7 displays the page http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll. If I put my mouse over the WSDL link for the ITestService, I see http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll/wsdl/ITestService in the status bar. However, when I click this link, the address bar shows http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll/wsdl/ITestService, but I see only the HTML from http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll. There seems no way to get to the SOAP definition. IIS 7 seems to be ignoring everything after the script name (it is ignoring the pathinfo). Additional evidence that IIS7 is stripping off the pathinfo is that if I pause my mouse over the ITestService link, the statusbar shows http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll?intf=ITestService. Clicking that link takes me to another HTML page, the one associated with http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll?intf=ITestService. However, any link that includes a pathinfo following the script name, takes me simply to http://localhost/scripts/TestService.dll. I have tested this in Delphi 7, Delphi 2010, and Delphi XE, with the same results. I am guessing that IIS7 is stripping off the pathinfo, since even the WSDL Importer cannot get to the SOAP definition. Tried creating a new Web service using the CGI option, and got the same result. Have any idea what is going on? Added: Bob Swart reports he has had no problems under Windows 7 32-bit. Downloading the 32-bit OS and will try that (in a new VM).

  • Autoloading Development or Production configs (best practices)

    When programming sites you usually have one set of config files for the development environment and another set for the production server (or one file with both settings). I am assuming all projects should be handled by version control like git or svn. Manual file transfers (like FTP) is wrong on so many levels. How you enable/disable the correct settings (so that your system knows which ones to use) is a problem for me. Each system I work on just kind of jimmy-rigs a solution. Below are the 3 methods I know of and I am hoping that someone can submit a more elegant solutions. 1) File Based The system loads a folder structure based on the URL requested. /site.com /site.fakeTLD /lib index.php For example, if the url is http://site.com then the system loads the production config files located in the site.com folder. However, if I'm working on the site locally I visit http://site.fakeTLD to work on the local copy of the site. To setup this I edit my hosts file and add site.fakeTLD to point to my own computer (127.0.0.1/localhost) and then create a vhost in apache. So now I can work on the codebase locally and then push to the server without any trouble. The problem is that this is susceptible to a "host" injection attack. So someone loading site.com could set the host to site.fakeTLD and then the system would load my development config files instead of production. 2) Config Based The config files contain on section for development - and one for production. The problem is that each time you go to push your changes to the repo you have to edit the file to specify which set of config options should be used. $use = 'production'; //'development'; This leaves the repo open to human error should one of the developers forget to enable the right setting. 3) File System Check Based All the development machines have an extra empty file called "development.txt" or something. Each time the system loads it checks for this file - if found then it knows it is in development mode - if missing then it knows it is in production mode. Since the file is NEVER ADDED to the repo then it will never be pushed (and checked out) on the production machine. However, this just doesn't feel right and causes a slight slow down since all filesystem checks are slow. Is there anyway that the server can auto-detect wither to use the development or production configs?

I'm building a SharePoint Web Service consuming desktop application, using Java, JAX-WS in NetBeans. I have a working prototype, that can query the server for authentication mode, successfully authenticate and retrieve a list of web site. However, if I run the same app from a network that is behind a proxy server (the proxy does not require authentication), then I'm running into trouble. The normal -dhttp.proxyHost ... settings does not seam to help any. But I have found that by creating a ProxySelector class and setting it as default, I can regain access to the authentication web service, but I still can't retrieve the list of web sites from the SharePoint server. It's almost as if the authentication I provide is going to the proxy rather than the SharePoint server. Anyone have any experience on how to make this work?     We have a client who has requested a new project with development to be done on a CREON terminal (Spectra Technologies). Can anyone recommend some good resources about terminal and in particular CREON development. Or know of a reputable development team specializing in CREON development.
