• Windows 7 Update freezes - what to do?

  Hi, Yesterday I shutdown my notebook, and Windows 7 Ultimate started to install automatic updates. After one hour, I noticed that the update was still running. I thought OK, I shall go to sleep and let it run. In the morning it was still running. Thus, I thought it had crashed, forced a shutdown of the notebook and then restarted it. With the same effect that the notebook is "freezing" at "Install Update 1 of 5". It does not look like it has crashed. The progress wheel is still moving. But it does not make any progress... Would appreciate any help! Edit: OK, I was able to log-in into safe mode. This way I passed the install update screen. I do not want to generally disable updates, what can I do to not install the last update, which is creating troube. Or how can I find out whats the problem with the last update?

• MS Word custom dictionary making spellcheck slow - ideas?

  I have a user who edits technical materials. She uses MS Word's Custom Dictionary all the time for spelling; it has grown very large, and is now making spell check very slow. All of the advice I've read online says to disable the custom dictionary. This is an easy solution, but is not workable for the user, because she actually needs this dictionary. So, is there any way to optimize the custom dictionary and/or Word itself, so that a large dictionary file doesn't slow things down quite so badly? Many thanks. Update after suggestions: I ran contig on the file, and it reports just 1 frag, so that's not the issue I think. The file is 9.95KB -- 1,117 lines, each consisting of just a single word. I viewed the file using Notepad and none of the lines seems corrupted, strange, or overly long (no line seems to be over 10 chars or so). Both of your suggestions were helpful so I will upvote both; any further tips would be most welcome.

• Does ICS modify windows firewall policies in the registry?

  I had a host machine I wanted to enable ICS on. First I realized that doing so was not possible until I enabled the Windows Firewall. Once I enabled the firewall and set up ICS, I noticed due to group policy I could no longer disable the firewall. Also, any ports I tried to open seemed to be ignored. Although nothing seemed to be configured when I used the mmc snap-in to view local computer policy, when I checked the registry I noticed several policies set there in HKLM (such as disabling AllowLocalPolicyMerge). I was able to remove the policies from the registry and my open ports worked, but they were eventually re-added without my input. The network I am sharing the internet from is an "unsecured" wireless network with an authentication page, is it possible that this is causing those policies to be set? Did ICS set those policies? When you go to the properties of the ICS enabled adapter and go to the ICS settings it takes you to a tab called services where you can add and remove "services running on your network that internet users can access". Is this related to the windows firewall?

• Using keyboard disables touchpad left button for a second on Acer laptop in Windows 8.1

  The problem is present in the whole system not only in games: desktop, chrome, games, everywhere. When I press any "input key" on a keyboard for example in desktop I can't select the file by left mouse button OR by tapping the touchpad for about one second(right button works immediately). Later on the LMB works well. There is NO delay, button is just deactivated for a second. In games that means that when I run I cannot shoot for example. When I switched LMB and RMB functions in windows control panel still the LMB is getting disabled and RMB works fine. By "input key" I mean letter or a number, keys like Alt, CapsLock, Ctrl does not affect touchpad. I do not remember that problem when I used Windows 7. USB mouse works like it should. The problem existed when I was using Elantech touchpad driver and after I uninstalled it and used Windows 8.1 generic driver. EDIT I installed the Elantech drivers and set values to 0 at every disable... key. But the problem is still present. EDIT 2 THE LAPTOP IS Acer V3-571G I have turned off disabling function in touchpad but it did not fix it. I know that touchpad is NOT broken down. Turned on the animated touchpad icon of elantech drivers and put it on the task bar(on a picture) When I type the letter and press the LMB the dynamic icon displays the click but it is ignored.

• Migrating WebLogic 10.3.0 to new host. Slow managed server startup times

  We are migrating our Blue Martini Commerce application (only supported on WebLogic 10.3.0) to a new host (Redhat 6.3 on a VMWare ESX vm). We are seeing extremely slow start up times for our managed server(s) that is basically 20x slower than our current production. As a for instance the Publish managed server takes ~30 - 45 seconds in current production and in the new environment it takes ~10 minutes. The setup uses the same domain structure and JVM as the current production environment. The same setup files are used. We use jdk1.6.0_33 on 64 bit architecture. We used the generic 64bit weblogic installer and used pack / unpack utilities to migrate the domain. The JAVA_OPTS to start this server are: "-d64 -Xms256m -Xmx512m -XX:PermSize=48m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m" The sysadmins have checked /etc/sysctl.conf and /etc/limits.conf to ensure we were not hitting some kind of process limit. As I am not sure what this managed server does from a Blue Martini perspective during the phase of startup I also had the DBA check to ensure that Oracle RAC (11.2.0.3) wasn't also hitting some kind of process limit or if there was a tns listener issue. The new host is quite a bit stricter with their server lock downs so there are a few differences.... Redhat 6.3 in new env, RH 5.7 in current SElinux is targeted in new env and disabled in current VM in new env and dedicated hardware in current iptables disabled in current. It was enabled in new prod but I had them disable it just in case I apologize for not being more specific. I am mostly hoping got some tips. I do not have the typical root access I would normally have in this environment. I am just hoping got a path forward. I did a few 'kill -3' to see if there are blocked threads and I got nadda. • How does one skip “Windows did not shut down successfully” in Win7-64?

  Migrating an app from an expensive and unreliable dedicated embedded x86 box running WinXP-embedded to COTS hardware (Dell E6410 laptop) running normal Win7-64. At this time, it's not feasible to deploy using Windows 7 embedded. The problem is, that the system is still sort of "embedded". The power could shut off at virtually any time without prior warning. We've stripped the OS down and removed the battery capability so that it will power down as desired. The app never writes to the disk, so it's not like we're going to corrupt anything terribly. The system is essentially idle after our app is up and running (with the exception of some computation, graphics, and TCP/IP and serial communications) so the OS enters a pretty stable state rather quickly. After a power-loss however, it rightly complains that Windows did not shut down successfully and presents the user with the Windows Error Recovery text screen. If left alone, it does eventually move on booting just fine, but we'd like to skip that step if possible. WinXP-embedded is designed to do this automatically, so I know it's possible. I've looked at the Kernel Switches but I didn't see anything documented for "Skip Windows Error Recovery". I've also read extensively on the startup process: http://homepage.ntlworld.com./jonathan.deboynepollard/FGA/windows-nt-6-boot-process.html I know I can disable the auto chkdsk in the registry, but that's not the same thing either. So, how do I streamline the boot process to not hassle the user about a situation that will be the regular normal situation?

• Can't open shared drive after disconnecting vpn

  I use a VPN to connect to my office network. On my local network I have another WinXP machine that shares a printer and a few shared folders. While I'm connected to my work VPN, I can access the shared printer and folders on the other machine just fine, and vice versa. Once I disconnect the VPN, I can't access the local machine any more, and the other machine can't access my machine. The network itself seems ok - I can ping the other machine, get to the internet, and get on to a web server shared by the other machine, but I can't get to the shared folders or printer. If I reconnect to the VPN, my access is restored. I'm guessing this is some sort of authentication thing, but I don't know what. Any ideas? Update This problem is bothering me again, so here's an update. Depending on when I first access the WinXP machine, I either have this problem, or the opposite problem. After a reboot, if I (for example) print, then connect to the VPN, I can't access the machine while on the VPN. If after a reboot I connect to the VPN, then print, I can't access the machine off the VPN. In both cases, if I enable/disable the VPN again, I can access the machine again. Thanks

• Linux will not activate wireless after device has been re-enabled

  Using a Eee 900A netbook by Asus. By pressing Fn + F2, I can disable or enable the wireless chip on the netbook, a blue LED indicates the status. I've been able to connect to wireless networks just fine with this netbook. However, if the wireless chip ever becomes disabled, I have to reboot to get my network connection back. This generally happens when suspending. For some reason the LED will be off and I have to hit Fn + F2 for it to light up again. However, after doing so, Linux will not reconnect to the network. It simply changes the wireless status from "wireless is disabled" to "device not ready". Even worse, I've recently had issues with the chip being enabled at boot, thus making it nearly impossible to get connected. I've searched around on-line but haven't found much of anything useful on this. This happens on all kinds of different distros including Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook, EeeBuntu 4 beta, Jolicloud and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook. Edit I noticed this question is getting a lot of views. To give a quick update, I never did resolve this issue with the given distro's. However, I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition and this issue has gone away.

• Change A Password

  I have a non-domain machine that I use with our company's domain resources over vpn regularly. I switched to Windows 8 (fresh install), and the "Change a password" option went away from the Ctrl-Alt-Del window. Can't seem to google anything about this subject, or find a way to access that password change dialog. I tried running the .reg file from http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/63014-ctrl-alt-del-screen-add-remove-change-password.html with no luck. I also tried to Disable "Remove Change Password" via gpedit.msc. I could do it from my domain laptop, but I like to do it on this machine because it updates all my saved copies of those credentials. My local account is tied to my hotmail account if that matters. Updates: Administrator account. I apologize for stating this was an upgrade, it was a fresh install to a diff't drive. 64-bit Pro install. Bounty's almost up If someone can just confirm that the Change A Password... should or should not be present on a non-domain, Live tied, Win8 install, I'll be satisfied that I can or cannot expect to fix it.

• In Windows 7 power management, is it possible to set different sleep settings for different SATA disks?

  I'm having an issue with Windows 7 either freezing up or generating a BSOD coming out of sleep. I suspect that it is related to my boot/OS drive, an OCZ Vertex SE SSD, because numerous other Vertex users have reported sleep problems. Notably, if I put the computer to sleep, it almost always wakes correctly. If it goes to sleep after a timeout, it almost always BSODs. I disabled timed sleep and now it freezes when left unattended. My next step is to disable "Put hard disks to sleep after X minutes", but I'd like to change this setting only for the SSD and not for the rotating data disks, which I would like to spin down normally. Does anyone know a place to configure sleep on a per-disk basis? I don't need to set different timeouts on different disks (although that would be nice), simply setting "this disk sleeps" and "sleep is disabled for this disk" would be great. Additional system information: Windows 7 Ultimate x64, Core i5 - P55 chipset, Intel RST drivers are installed. One SSD, two rotating HDD, and a DVD-RW drive are all connected to the Intel SATA ports. I could potentially move some of these to my motherboard's other SATA controller if that would help.

• How can I get around windows 8.1 store (& metro apps) not working with UAC disabled

  I have UAC disabled because it is annoying and causes more problems that it could ever possibly solve, at least for me. Here is yet another problem, and it seems to be due to a recent update as I don't remember it in the past. Even with a MS account, I can't use the store because UAC is disabled. How can I get around this? Short term I can just enable it, reboot, use store, disable it, reboot and be on my way but there has to be a better way (other than MS getting their software completely right - like that will happen anytime, ever) Edit: Apparently this is far more of an issue than I originally thought. Now every(?)many metro apps requires UAC. Anyone aware of the update this got rolled in with? Thankfully netflix isn't affected which is the only metro app I use at the moment. What I see: Event Log info: Activation of app winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy!Windows.Store failed with error: This app can't be activated when UAC is disabled. • Transferring domain from one registrar to another

  I have a domain from my old web host, which was free with my hosting account. After a few years, I am moving to a VPS. Most of my other domains were registered with Namecheap, so it was just a matter of changing a few DNS records. However, given that my old host does not provide me with a DNS control panel, and I don't want to be paying a full hosting bill for just domains, I'm now looking into transferring it. My old host says there will be a charge of $15 to them. NameCheap's page seems to imply you don't need the current registrar to do anything, but it also seems to be based on sending an email to the one listed in whois. Of course, my old host have whoisguard on the domain so the only email on it is [email protected] (and not a unique [email protected], just [email protected]) which doesn't go to me. Again, there doesn't seem to be an option to disable this. So, is it a case of paying my old host's fee, and paying again for the domain from NameCheap, or is there some other way to transfer my domain? (I'm not really sure which of the trilogy sites this is best for.)

• How does Google geo location service work?

  I dont use google maps much, but I was using it today and I clicked the "Show my location" button for the first time, then firefox asked for permission and I clicked "share my location", google maps showed my location pretty accurate. But, how does this system really works? I mean how can google know where I live? I am connecting to the internet with a VPN, so my "public IP" is not from my country, but from sweden, also I use linux and I change the mac of my wireless device, but google still show my location. I know I can disable this feature setting firefox about:config geo.enabled to false, but I am curious about how google can know where I live even when I dont have a real mac address and my IP is not from my real country. Basically I'd like to know if this feature works only because of code that exists in chrome and firefox (which spies my system)? I am worried about anyone knowing where I live, I mean... where is my privacy? Part of the fun about the internet is remaining anonymous.

• Can applications use all of the memory in Windows 8?

  Windows 7 (and Windows Vista) have a built-in limit of not being able to use the last 25% of RAM. You will get a low memory warning when you get close to the limit. Even if you disable that warning, applications will run out of memory and crash since the OS will refuse to allocate memory from that last 25%. That was fine when Vista was designed, when machines had 1 GB of total memory, but is pretty daft for today's 8 GB machines. Yes, the system will run cache, etc. on that extra 2 GB, but running out of memory when you have "merely" 2 GB left.... NB: this has nothing to do with the page file. If you limit the page file to a sensible size like 2 GB, you will still see this behavior. The system will cram the page file to the last byte while refusing to touch that 1/4th of the RAM. Does Windows 8 change this behavior? Is there now some fixed minimum free RAM requirement, like 512 MB, or is it still 25%? Can you actually adjust the low memory limit?

• Permanent solution to Win XP SP3 window animation removal

  Hello everyone, May I know how I can get rid of the Window Animation (seen when you minimise or maximise a window) in Windows XP Service Pack 3 Permanently?? I have tried the following two solutions: I went to the control panel---adjust visual effects--- then unchecked the "Animate windows when maximising and minimising" option. 2.I have tried using windows powertoys tweakUI to disable the animation. 3.I even tried this: Turn Off Window Animation You can shut off the animation displayed when you minimize and maximize Windows. 1. Open RegEdit 2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control panel \Desktop\ WindowMetrics 3. Create a new string value "MinAnimate". 4. Set the value data of 0 for Off or 1 for On But still no help The Big Problem is that the window animation will disappear for a while but returns again some time later. When I navigate back to the "adjust visual effects" window, the checkbox for "Animate windows when maximising and minimising" is checked again. Thank you very much

• Chrome will not load a web page with an <embed> element

It plays in IE, but not in Firefox or Chrome. My problem: Chrome reports "Could not load VLC Plugin". It seems to be a known problem that the VLC community don't necessarily feel like fixing at the moment, and is a result of Google choosing not to allow some certain kind of plugin. If I disable the plugin I no longer get the message but nothing happens when I click the button. Looking at the console in a debug window I see Uncaught TypeError: undefined is not a function Sound.html:7 PlaySound Sound.html:7 onclick which suggests Chrome could not find anything else to handle the sound file. How to I tell Chrome to use (e.g.) Windows Media Player? * UPDATE * This is apparently because the VLC plugin is a NPAPI plugin and Chrome no longer supports these. I have uninstalled VLC and this has removed the error on loading the webpage with an embedded sound element, but it still doesn't invoke WMP instead.

• Single Sign On 802.1x Wireless - saying “Connecting to <SSID>”, hangs for 10 seconds, fails with “Unable to connect to <SSID>, Logging on…”.

  We are implementing WiFi on Windows 7 machines in our corporate environment. Machines should be able to log into the domain by WiFi as the Machine (Pre-Logon), and as the User (Post-Logon). We have everything working correctly except for 2 things: 1) Sometimes the login scripts don't run 2) The user VLAN is sometimes different than the machine vlan, and no DHCP renew occurs after user logon. I am clear that both these problems should be fixable by using the "Single Sign On" Option under the 802.1x Wireless Vista GPO, and setting the wireless to connect immediately before user logon and also by enabling "This network uses different VLAN for authentication with machine and user credentials" If I enable these GPO settings in a lab, the computer does authenticate & gets WIFI before the user logs on, so when the login box is displayed, it says “Windows will try to connect to ”, even though it is already connected (which should be ok?). Enter the user credentials and it goes to a screen saying “Connecting to ”, hangs for 10 seconds, fails with “Unable to connect to , Logging on…”. Desktop fires up and then the user re-authenticates with no problem as himself instead of the machine, but by that point, we defeat the point of the WiFi SSO “before user logon”. Also by that point, no DHCP renew seems to occur, and the user is still stuck with the wrong IP address for the new VLAN. When the “Connecting to ” screen comes up, there’s no indication on the AP or the Radius server that anything whatsoever is happening after credentials are entered until after the domain logon. Also with this policy enabled, sometimes windows hangs on a black screen indefinitely until I disable the Wireless NIC, so something is knackered for sure. What have I missed? Suggestions are much appreciated... /P

• "Document in ADF" on Canon MX340

  I have a Canon MX340 multifunction printer. Recently, it keeps saying "Document in ADF" when I turn on the printer. I've tried clearing this multiple times, but as soon as the feeder wheels stop turning, in an attempt to clear the document feeder, it just pops up the same error again. This is particularly annoying, as it blocks all functions on the device - I cannot print, even though printing has no interaction with the document feeder. I've opened up the feeder device, as much as can be done with fingers alone. There just doesn't seem to be anything in there. I ran a sheet of paper through about six times, just to see if some dust might be getting in the way, and I've blown out the feeder with air. Still nothing. At this point, I don't care too much about the ADF working, I just want to disable whatever sensor is tripping this error message. Any ideas? I found this thread online, where a user has the same problem. But no resolution was reached there.

• WSUS registry file: NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers entry being ignored

  We are using a registry entry to connect our internal workstations to our WSUS server and everything seems to be working except the NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers entry. Without fail, over the last few weeks, our lab setup as well as our users have been prompted to restart their machines with a 15 minute time out and there's nothing they can do about it. They can't postpone or cancel the restart, all options in the prompt are greyed out. • Display errors using VMWare Player and Remote Desktop on Windows XP

  I've come up against a weird display issue that I can't seem to find any "fix" for. When I first boot up my computer, everything behaves normally. If I start to use VMWare Player and/or Remote Desktop, my desktop starts having some odd video issues. The frames for some windows aren't drawn at all, if I move windows around rapidly, the area under where the window used to be isn't cleared (still shows artifacts of the content of the window), etc. In some cases, the minimize / restore / maximize buttons aren't drawn (but are click-able if you can guess where they are). I've tried the usual stuff - current drivers all around, using a single monitor, etc.. none of it seems to have any bearing. If I try to disable hardware acceleration, it tends to crash the computer. As I said earlier, it's running Windows XP, dual monitors, an NVidia en8400GS video card, asus p7p55d motherboard. Not sure what other pertinent details are needed. I would appreciate any help or suggestions!

• LighTPD and PHP not working if outside of LightTPD folder

  I need to set up a simple web server with PHP on Windows XP that a number of different people will use for local testing. I'm using LightTPD 1.4.30-4-IPv6-Win32-SSL and PHP 5.2. So far I've created this folder structure: tools/ LightTPD/ htdocs/ PHP/ I set up PHP as CGI and the document root as server_root + "/htdocs". It works fine (well, it's slow but I don't want to bother with FastCGI for now :) ). My problem is when I try to put the htdocs outside of LightTPD folder, like this: htdocs/ tools/ LightTPD/ PHP/ I update the document root to server_root + "/../../htdocs" and while static HTML pages work fine, PHP pages stop working (they return a "No input file specified"). I literally just change the document root, I didn't change anything in the php.ini or anywhere else. Please also note that I left all doc_root, user_dir and cgi.force_redirect to the default values in php.ini, and it works when htdocs is inside LightTPD, but not when I move it ouside. Any idea of why it's breaking?? • Suspending/Screen Going Off When Still In Use (Ubuntu & Arch)

  I have a laptop (HP Pavilion G6) that was running Ubuntu and for a while now (at least 6 months) has been having a problems randomly suspending whilst still in use with a full battery and still being charged. Originally the problem was with Ubuntu so I first attempted to disable suspend using every way I could find (gui settings + dconf editor) this didn't work and it still kept suspending so I ended up switching to Arch Linux. Unfortunately not long after switching to Arch Linux I ended up experiencing the same problems. So yet again I modified the settings in /etc/systemd/logind.conf to prevent it from suspending and this time it worked, kind of. Now I am experiencing the screen going off and I have to change to a different tty (by using ctrl-alt-fx, which was something I also found I had to do sometimes when waking up from suspend in Ubuntu) to get the screen to go back on. The strange thing is this only happens when running a Linux distros and only occasionally (e.g. it may happen once/twice a week at most). But when it does happen it can happen multiple times in a row. And it only seems to happen when I am using it. This may just mean that it hasn't happened yet when I am not but generally if I leave it to run something or play a video it hasn't occurred only when I am using it regardless of which program I am using (e.g. it has occurred when using firefox, vim, even when using a virtualbox vm). At first I thought it could be the CPU temperature but after monitoring it I discovered it occurred a lot of the time when my CPU was less than 50 °C. I then checked /var/log/* but could not see anything related to it suspending only a few standard things from when it was woken up. I am really out of ideas and really hoping someone can help. • Laptop Synaptics Touchpad No Longer Functional After Windows 7 Upgrade

  I have a Toshiba laptop, with an integral Synaptics (PS/2 port) touch pad, that I bought pre-installed with 32-bit Windows Vista. After doing a clean install of 32-bit Windows 7, I can no longer get the touch pad to respond. The function (FN) keys on the laptop still operate correctly, but they no longer display on screen when used. I have no way of knowing if the function key to enable / disable the touch pad is working correctly, although the function keys for dim / brighten display, as well as others, work fine. I have removed the device from the device manager and allowed it to reinstall with no success. I have removed the previous drivers and updated them with the current 32-bit Win7 compatible versions from Synaptics website, with no success. The Synaptics icon displays in the taskbar, and the touch pad is available in the Device Manager, both of which say the device is installed and working correctly. I have checked to make sure that the touch pad is enabled in the Synaptics menu, and have tried toggling enabled / disabled with no success. If anyone has any suggestions, or knows where I can find a solution, I would be very appreciative.

• What's Keeping My Computer Awake?

  First the question; How do I figure out what is preventing my Windows 7 computer from going into sleep mode? Second; some background... I've been struggling with this for a few days and am utterly perplexed. I setup sleep mode on my Windows 7 PC a few weeks ago, and all was well. The PC would sleep as expected and I was snuggly in knowing that my computer was saving power and some wear and tear on the components (we'll leave the 'is it better to sleep' debate for another thread/day, please don't start it). Well, I noticed the other night that my system stopped ever going to sleep. I set the sleep time down to 1 minute and wandered fully away from the PC (ensuring that no errant mouse or keyboard movements would occur) and the PC never went to sleep. I've also observed this over longer intervals as well, such as overnight. I have sleep mode enabled, of course "multimedia settings - When Sharing Media" is set to allow the computer to sleep. "powercfg -lastwake" show nothing of interest, since it never goes to sleep and can't wake up. "powercfg /requests" shows 3 entries - all "[DRIVER] ?". I assume that 2 of these are my mouse and keyboard - as I've recently used them to run the powercfg command. I'm at a loss for the third though. I've unhooked all USB peripherals save for my keyboard and mouse. Wake on LAN is disabled in my BIOS. I know that you can disable all apps from waking/preventing sleep - but I want the ability to remain for those apps that do legitimately need to keep the system awake. So; does anyone know of a way to figure out what the 3rd phantom "[DRIVER] ?" is in powercfg /requests?
