How useful is a 'pure' MVC implementation?

I work at a company that provides custom made 'CRM'-like software. We are currently redesigning/redeveloping the software with the hopes that it will look more modern and be easier to develop and customize for future clients. Currently it takes a long time to customize each new application. There is a presumption that the reason it takes so long is because of the amount of business logic that is present in the 'view' layer. To some extent I can vouch for this being true, but symptoms don't always reliably point out a cause. There was a suggestion that if we just move the business logic to the controller layer and use pure view (we use java J2EE and struts) as in implementing struts tags instead of calling the bean layer and iterating objects right on the jsp - etc etc. Before I start advocating we go forward with this, I wanted to get a feeling for what other people thought. Does a "pure" implementation of the MVC (especially emphasis on decoupling the controller and the view) provide a cleaner, easier to develop and change code base?

I managed to do more than half of what they say, but it's just one input that I have been struggling to find out. I'll write the question and thereafter my code, "Write an application that creates and prints a random phone number of the form XXX-XXX-XXXX. Include the dashes in the output. Do not let the first three digits contain an 8 or 9 (but don't be more restrictive than that), and make sure that the second set of three digits is not greater than 742. Hint: Think through the easiest way to construct the phone number. Each diigit does not have to be determined separately." OK, the highlighted sentence is what i'm looking at. I'm on chapter 3 so we have not yet discussed if statements etcetera, but Aliases, String class, Packages, Import declaration, Random Class, Math Class, Formatting output (decimal- & numberFormat), Printf, Enumeration & Wrapper classes + autoboxing. So consider answer the question based only on these assumptions, please. The code doesn't have any errors. Thank you!

Selenium Test Results are empty

I've Jenkins and selenium configured to run tests after the app is build, everything is ok till the moment that selenium tests should run, actually the selenium test suite starts correctly and then it stops after the first test and does not go forward. I'm using VNC to watch what is happening. The logs produces by selenium are empty. Im testing those test via java -jar /var/lib/selenium/selenium-server-jar -browserSessionReuse -htmlSuite *firefox https://test-a.4pm.si /var/lib/jenkins/jobs/4pm_test/workspace/4pm_ee-test/selenium_tests/suite.html /var/lib/jenkins/jobs/4pm_test/workspace/selenium-result.html the selenium-result.html is empty it just execute the first test which is OK and stops there is there any selenium server setting I need to set?

Hi, I am trying to execute a command CSRUN.exe with certain parameters from command prompt. I am able to do this using command prompt. Everytime instead of invoking this from the command prompt, i thought of writing a batch file, where in a single click will help me and also i forward this to someone who wants to execute. Possible to get PrimayKey IDs back after a SQL BulkCopy?

Hi I am using C# and using SqlBulkCopy. I have a problem though. I need to do a mass insert into one table then another mass insert into another table. These 2 have a PK/FK relationship. Table A Field1 -PK auto incrementing (easy to do SqlBulkCopy as straight forward) Table B Field1 -PK/FK - This field makes the relationship and is also the PK of this table. It is not auto incrementing and needs to have the same id as to the row in Table A. So these tables have a one to one relationship but I am unsure how to get back all those PK Id that the mass insert made since I need them for Table B.

Problem declaring and calling internal metthods

How do I declare and use small helper functions inside my normal methods ? In on of my objective-c methods I need a function to find an item within a string -(void) Onlookjson:(id) sender{ NSString * res = getKeyValue(res, @"Birth"); } I came up with a normal C type declaration for helper function getKeyvalue like this NSString * getKeyvalue(NSString * s, NSString key){ NSString *trm = [[s substringFromIndex:2] substringToIndex:[s length]-3]; NSArray *list = [trm componentsSeparatedByString:@";"]; .... Errors with redefinitions after upgrade to XCode 3.2.3

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and Xcode 3.2.5 so I could test on my iPod Touch and iPhone and ran into some problems with the project I was working on. First it couldn't find a Base SDK, then my old frameworks weren't hooking up correctly. Finally after setting the Project Format to Xcode 3.1 compatible (3.2 also worked) and the Base SDK for all configurations to iOS 4.2, then setting my iOS deployment target to iOS 3.0 I was able to get the system to find a Base SDK and attempt a build. That's when the frameworks didn't want to cooperate. 4/6 I'm using displayed in red, so I re routed the path to the iPhone simulator 4.2 platform which worked perfectly. I was able to build my project, no errors or warnings and my app worked fine. I went to work last night thinking I had fixed the problem. This morning I fired up the laptop and went to build my code base and now have 1142 errors all of which have to do with code I haven't written deemed as being redefined. Suggestions? Unable to pass variables from one view to another

I have a detail view that includes three UIButtons, each of which pushes a different view on to the stack. One of the buttons is connected to a MKMapView. When that button is pushed I need to send the latitude and longitude variables from the detail view to the map view. I'm trying to add the string declaration in the IBAction: - (IBAction)goToMapView { MapViewController *mapController = [[MapViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"MapViewController" bundle:nil]; mapController.address = self.address; mapController.Title = self.Title; mapController.lat = self.lat; mapController.lng = self.lng; //Push the new view on the stack [[self navigationController] pushViewController:mapController animated:YES]; [mapController release]; mapController = nil; } But I get this when I try to build: 'error: incompatible types in assignment' for both lat and lng variables. So my questions are am I going about passing the variables from one view to another the right way? And does the MKMapView accept latitude and longitude as a string or a number?

hi, i have an webserivce written where i do an insertion opertion to DB. path :http://localhost:1838/Ajax/WebService.asmx?wsdl.name of the webservice is localhost i have added webservice for the project now on button click event i try to call this webserice like this localhost obj= new localhost(); obj.insert(); now i am able to do the insertion operation fine. but i wanted to create an proxy for the webservice so wat is the use of it doing like tat? when i run this command in my command prompt in vs wsdl /out:myProxyClass.cs http://localhost:1838/Ajax/WebService.asmx?WSDL i get an error unable to connect the remote server. no connection would be made because the target machine actively refused it looking forward for an solution any help would great thank you

But my project is maintained by maven , if I add "spring-modules-cache" to the runtime dependency , it will bring a lot of dependencies to my WAR file , filling my WAR with a lot of unnecessary jars. I just need one declaration in it , not all of its dependencies ... Is there any way to tell maven not to include its dependencies to the project ? Or ... another way , when packaging WAR , just copy another prepared spring-modules-cache.jar to WEB-INF/lib , how to do this ? Thanks !

Loading and managing reference data in Rails

Most of the apps I've worked on have had some kind of reference data stored in the database, for example categories, zipcodes, area codes etc... this is information that's going to change very infrequently. Most of the time you want to load some kind of display name, and that's it. Currently this isn't causing me too many headaches, it's easy to :include the models I need when doing my queries, but going forward it causes a lot of query noise. Ideally I'd like to load the reference data when the app starts and when referencing it in queries it'll load from the cache instead of going to the database. What's the best way to manage this?

And it is not my intention to sound like a complete moron, but honestly, I have had a hard enough time figuring out just how to load an external .swf into my main file! And now my friend is asking me if I could please add a button within the external .swf which will unload itself and load a new on in its place... I have looked around in the forums for an answer for a while now and I believe it is time for me to break down, admit defeat, and ask for help. Can someone please tell me it's not that difficult..? What Database to distribute as part of a C# app backend

I am planning on writing and commercialising a C# app which will store data in an underlying database I use MySQL on my environment for my own development and this is what I would have used to write the application for myself (no need to use FK - MyISAM engine would be fine). I am concerned about how easy it will be to distribute the app together with the database engine. Would using MySQL allow me for easy packaging of the app for a "one-click" install on the client side? (ie I do not want them to have to install MySQL by themselves) and also is it feasible from a licensing point of view? Are there other Database systems which would make the process more straight-forward

How can I use Perl to grab text from a web page that is dynamically generated with JavaScript?

There is a website I am trying to pull information from in Perl, however the section of the page I need is being generated using javascript so all you see in the source is: <div id="results"></div> I need to somehow pull out the contents of that div and save it to a file using Perl/proxies/whatever. e.g. the information I want to save would be document.getElementById('results').innerHTML; I am not sure if this is possible or if anyone had any ideas or a way to do this. I was using a lynx source dump for other pages but since I cant straight forward screen scrape this page I came here to ask about it! Best way to use PL/SQL Pacakge Cursors from Pro*C

I have a cursor defined in PL/SQL, and I am wondering what the best way to use it from Pro*C is. Normally for a cursor defined in Pro*C you would do: EXEC SQL DECLARE curs CURSOR FOR SELECT 1 FROM DUAL; EXEC SQL OPEN curs; EXEC SQL FETCH curs INTO :foo; EXEC SQL CLOSE cusr; I was hoping that the same (or similar) syntax would work for a packaged cursor. For example, I have a package MyPack, with a declaration type MyType is record (X integer); cursor MyCurs(x in integer) return MyType; Now I have in my Pro*C code a rather unsatisfying piece of embedded PL/SQL that opens the cursor, does the fetching etc., as I couldn't get the first style of syntax to work. Using the example EXEC SQL EXECUTE DECLARE XTable is table of MyPack.MyType; BEGIN OPEN MyPack.MyCurs(:param); FETCH MyPack.MyCurs INTO XTable; CLOSE MyPack.MyCurs; END; END-EXEC; Does anyone know if there is a more "Pure" Pro*C approach?

Webservice and ORM Framework?

Does anybody know a good web framework that includes an ORM mapper and allows straight forward implementation of web services? I'm looking for a framework written in PHP or C++. I'm looking for the following features (not all of them required, some will do nicely) data definition in one place used by database and web service WSDL generation XML output/JSON output boilerplate code generation So what I would like is a framework that let's me specify the objects, the web service functions on those objects and then generate everything that is required leaving me to fill the business logic (connecting the database to the web service). Anything like that out there? Background information for why I need this: I'm looking into creating a web project: the client is a rich web application that fetches all its data using AJAX. It will be completely custom made using only a low level javascript library. The server back end is supposed to serve static content and javascript (basically the rich web application) and to provide a RESTful web service API (which I would like to implement using aforementioned framework).

Is it possible for two VS2008 C# class library projects to share a single namespace?

I am trying to share a common namespace between two projects in a single solution. The projects are "Blueprint" and "Repositories". Blueprint contains Interfaces for the entire application and serves as a reference for the application structure. In the Blueprint project, I have an interface with the following declaration: namespace Application.Repositories{ public interface IRepository{ IEntity Get(Guid id); } } In the Repositories project I have a class the following class: namespace Application.Repositories{ public class STDRepository: IRepository { STD Get(Guid id){ return new SkankyExGirlfriendDataContext() .FirstOrDefault<STD>(x=>x.DiseaseId == id); } } } However, this does not work. The Repositories project has a reference to the Blueprint project. I receive a VS error: "The type or namespace name 'IRepository' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) - Normally, this is easy to fix but adding a using statement doesn't make sense since they have the same namespace. I tried it anyway and it didn't work. The reference has been added, and without the line of code referencing that interface, both projects compile successfully. I am lost here. I have searched all over and have found nothing, so I am assuming that there is something fundamentally wrong with what I'm doing ... but I don't know what it is. So, I would appreciate some explanation or guidance as to how to fix this problem. I hope you guys can help. Note: The reason I want to do it this way and keep the interfaces under the same namespace is because I want a solid project to keep all the interfaces in, in order to have a reference for the full architecture of the application. I have considered work arounds, such as putting all of the interfaces in the Blueprint.Application namespace instead of the application namespace. However, that would require me to write the using statement on virtually every page in the application...and my fingers get tired. Thanks again guys...

What is the performance impact of CSS's universal selector?

I'm trying to find some simple client-side performance tweaks in a page that receives millions of monthly pageviews. One concern that I have is the use of the CSS universal selector (*). Best Place to Store Config Files and Log Files on Windows for My Program?

I need to store log files and config files for my application. Where is the best place to store them? Right now I'm just using the current directory, which ends up putting them in the Program Files directory where my program lives. The log files will probably be accessed by the user somewhat regularly, so %APPDATA% seems a little hard to get to. Is a directory under %USERPROFILE%\My Documents the best? It needs to work for all versions of Windows from 2000 forward.

Hi, Assume I have an order_dummy table where order_dummy_id, order_id, user_id, book_id, author_id are stored. You may complain the logic of my table but I somehow need to do it that way. I want to execute following queries. SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 1 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 2 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 3 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 Please keep in mind that several numbers of same book is included in one order. Therefore, I list order_dummy_id by descending and limit 1 so only LATEST ORDER of A BOOK is shown. But my goal is to show other books in that way in one table. I used group by like this ... SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 GROUP BY book_id but it only shows order_dummy_id with ascending result. I have no idea anymore. Looking forward your kindness help!
