  • Are the results of the system-check taken by "checkbox-gtk" public? Where can I watch them?

    - by oZiRiz
With Ubuntu there comes a nice possibility to check the compatibility of a new (or even old) system and to send these data to the ubuntu developers. The tool to do this is "checkbox-gtk". I would like to know, whether there is a chance to view these results because it would be nice to know if the future system will work with ubuntu. Yes. I know about the certified hardware list, but there are only a few systems listed and i hope that more people test there systems with checkbox and commit the results.

  • Fix grub2 after installing ubuntu 12.04

    - by user80039
I've installed ubuntu 12.04, but after rebooting I get the message: GRUB loading: Welcome to GRUB! error: file '/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found Entering rescue mode... grub rescue> I have the following partitons setup: /dev/sda6: /boot ext2 /dev/sda9: / ext4 /dev/sda8: swap /dev/sda7: /home ext4 I guess that some of the prefixes for GRUB are wrong due to the /boot partition? Or there might be a problem with EFI? The hardware is a 1015bx asus netbook with c-60 amd fusion chipset. How can I fix this GRUB problem from the rescue prompt?

  • Opening programs very slow on ubuntu 12.10

    - by Mislav Blaževic
When I open any program for first time after boot, it loads VERY slowly (Doesn't matter how long after boot). For example, terminal takes 2-3 seconds, skype and firefox often take much longer. If I close it and open again, it loads in reasonable time (<1 second). I got Intel Core i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz, so it shouldn't be hardware issue... What is causing this? Disk benchmark: Average read time: 115.5 MB/s (100 samples) Average write time: 98.7 MB/s (100 samples) Average access time: 11.79 msec (1000 samples)

  • appearance incomplete

    - by user288986
I'm using 14:04 which is pretty nice. Something wionders me: if I open a window (e.g. Ubuntu Software Centre) I can see SOME items (sometimes nothing) but by hovering the mouse over it it appears - and then disappears again. Sometimes the side mover acts the same way... Maybe it has to do with my hardware: P4, 3 GHz, 2 GB RAM, older graphics board, KVM-switch? There's no difference whether I use Gnome, Ubuntu standard, Ubuntu classic, Ubuntu fallback... Thanks for hints Jens

  • What programming Langauge Would you learn to Reengineer USB Devices? [closed]

    - by user70113
Currently Work in IT support and am retraining in electrical engineering / electronics, I am also interested in Reverse Engineering which language would be best for Hardware RE, I have seen a few sources say C, C++ and Python? I am not familiar with Linux, but installed ubuntu to learn with. I am not a programmer far from it, but I can understand enough basic VB,Java and PHP to edit it for simple things. One of my immediate projects would be to learn to reverse engineer USB devices and write my own low level drivers, I know there are porting kits, but I really want to know it from the ground up. Thanks for any advise folks Most Appreciated.

  • How to disable the "roll up" / "shade" keyboard shortcut in Gnome 3 (after upgrading to 12.04)?

    - by torpesco
I am using Gnome 3. After upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04, "Ctrl-Alt-S" was reclaimed for use in toggling the shaded state of a window. I have checked the following places, and I haven't been able to find any instance of a keybinding set for toggling the shaded state. System Settings / Hardware / Keyboard / Shortcuts (as per How do I disable Ctrl+Alt+s to minimize a window?) I even tried setting a different shortcut. Made no difference. dconf-editor (now deprecated, from what I've found) gconf-editor/gsettings What am I missing?

  • Tuning Distributed Applications to Access Big Data

Distributed applications are just that: distributed across one or more hardware platforms across the enterprise. The database administrator (DBA) has the unenviable task of monitoring these environments and configuring and tuning the database server to meet multiple needs. As multiple distributed applications now require access to a very large data store, what tuning options are available to help? Get your SQL Server database under version control now!Version control is standard for applications, but databases haven’t caught up. So how can you bring database development up to speed? Why should you start? Find out…

  • Spurious resets on Ubuntu

    - by boone2048
I have a PC running Ubuntu 13.04 64bit, and I do weekly updates, so everything should be up-to-date. Everything is running fine, but sometimes, once-twice a week a complete reset happens. I think it must be software or hardware (perhaps Videocard) related, but I can't figure out what could be wrong. Can anybody suggest some ways, log files, where I could continue to search? By looking just at dmesg/dmesg.0 and Xorg.0.log I got nowhere. I cant find even a user application segfault. Any help is really appreciated.

  • Mongodb vs. Cassandra

    - by ming yeow
I am evaluating what might be the best migration option. Currently, i am on a sharded mysql (horizontal partition), with most of my data stored in json blobs. I do not have any complex SQL queries( already migrated away after since I partitioned my db) Right now, it seems like both Mongodb and Cassandra would be likely options. My situation lots of reads in every query, less regular writes not worried about "massive" scalability more concerned about simple setup, maintenance and code minimize hardware/server cost

  • Tips / techniques for high-performance C# server sockets

    - by McKenzieG1
I have a .NET 2.0 server that seems to be running into scaling problems, probably due to poor design of the socket-handling code, and I am looking for guidance on how I might redesign it to improve performance. Usage scenario: 50 - 150 clients, high rate (up to 100s / second) of small messages (10s of bytes each) to / from each client. Client connections are long-lived - typically hours. (The server is part of a trading system. The client messages are aggregated into groups to send to an exchange over a smaller number of 'outbound' socket connections, and acknowledgment messages are sent back to the clients as each group is processed by the exchange.) OS is Windows Server 2003, hardware is 2 x 4-core X5355. Current client socket design: A TcpListener spawns a thread to read each client socket as clients connect. The threads block on Socket.Receive, parsing incoming messages and inserting them into a set of queues for processing by the core server logic. Acknowledgment messages are sent back out over the client sockets using async Socket.BeginSend calls from the threads that talk to the exchange side. Observed problems: As the client count has grown (now 60-70), we have started to see intermittent delays of up to 100s of milliseconds while sending and receiving data to/from the clients. (We log timestamps for each acknowledgment message, and we can see occasional long gaps in the timestamp sequence for bunches of acks from the same group that normally go out in a few ms total.) Overall system CPU usage is low (< 10%), there is plenty of free RAM, and the core logic and the outbound (exchange-facing) side are performing fine, so the problem seems to be isolated to the client-facing socket code. There is ample network bandwidth between the server and clients (gigabit LAN), and we have ruled out network or hardware-layer problems. Any suggestions or pointers to useful resources would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has any diagnostic or debugging tips for figuring out exactly what is going wrong, those would be great as well. Note: I have the MSDN Magazine article Winsock: Get Closer to the Wire with High-Performance Sockets in .NET, and I have glanced at the Kodart "XF.Server" component - it looks sketchy at best.

  • Develop for WinCE with VS2010

    - by Michael
I have a VS2003 WinForms app running on WinCE (running on proprietary hardware so a switch is out for now) and I'd like to know if I can upgrade it to VS2010 (or 2008). In doing so, I lose the option to deploy it to a WinCE emulator. Is this situation just broken, or do I have options.

  • Linux - serial port read returning EAGAIN...

    - by Andre
Hello all! I am having some trouble reading some data from a serial port I opened the following way. I've used this instance of code plenty of times and all worked fine, but now, for some reason that I cant figure out, I am completely unable to read anything from the serial port. I am able to write and all is correctly received on the other end, but the replies (which are correctly sent) are never received (No, the cables are all ok ;) ) The code I used to open the serial port is the following: fd = open("/dev/ttyUSB0", O_RDWR | O_NONBLOCK | O_NOCTTY); if (fd == -1) { Aviso("Unable to open port"); return (fd); } else { //Get the current options for the port... bzero(&options, sizeof(options)); /* clear struct for new port settings */ tcgetattr(fd, &options); /*-- Set baud rate -------------------------------------------------------*/ if (cfsetispeed(&options, SerialBaudInterp(BaudRate))==-1) perror("On cfsetispeed:"); if (cfsetospeed(&options, SerialBaudInterp(BaudRate))==-1) perror("On cfsetospeed:"); //Enable the receiver and set local mode... options.c_cflag |= (CLOCAL | CREAD); options.c_cflag &= ~PARENB; /* Parity disabled */ options.c_cflag &= ~CSTOPB; options.c_cflag &= ~CSIZE; /* Mask the character size bits */ options.c_cflag |= SerialDataBitsInterp(8); /* CS8 - Selects 8 data bits */ options.c_cflag &= ~CRTSCTS; // disable hardware flow control options.c_iflag &= ~(IXON | IXOFF | IXANY); // disable XON XOFF (for transmit and receive) options.c_cflag |= CRTSCTS; /* enable hardware flow control */ options.c_cc[VMIN] = 0; //min carachters to be read options.c_cc[VTIME] = 0; //Time to wait for data (tenths of seconds) //Set the new options for the port... tcflush(fd, TCIFLUSH); if (tcsetattr(fd, TCSANOW, &options)==-1) { perror("On tcsetattr:"); } PortOpen[ComPort] = fd; } return PortOpen[ComPort]; After the port is initializeed I write some stuff to it through simple write command... int nc = write(hCom, txchar, n); where hCom is the file descriptor (and it's ok), and (as I said) this works. But... when I do a read afterwards, I get a "Resource Temporarily Unavailable" error from errno. I tested select to see when the file descriptor had something t read... but it always times out! I read data like this: ret = read(hCom, rxchar, n); and I always get an EAGAIN and I have no idea why. All help would be appreciated. Cheers

    I'm using a dll that contains unsafe code for interacting with specific hardware, and I'm trying to use it from C#, but I keep getting an AccessViolationException. What's causing it, and how can I fix it? namespace FingerPrint { public unsafe partial class Form1 : Form { [DllImport("MyDll.dll")] public static extern int DoesExist(); public unsafe Form1() { InitializeComponent(); MessageBox.Show(DoesExist() + ""); } } }

  • BSOD Before Windows Will Loads - Graphics Related

    - by Brian
Alright deep breath here: (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit btw) Today I installed Star Craft 2 Beta. After trying to log in, it had some issues where it said my device stopped working (referring to my video device I have to imagine). After I force quit the game there were some random "hot" (various colors if i remember correctly) pixels on the screen. I decided to reboot and try again with similar results. I figured that maybe my display drivers could stand to be updated (I don't frequently update them as I don't often run into problems). I went out to nVidia's website and grabbed the latest drivers for Windows 7 64 bit GeForce 9 series. (I have SLi-ed 9800 GTs). Everything seemed to install fine and I performed the restart. This is when things went from bad (can't play SC2 beta ;) ) to worse (can't boot into windows!). Initially the very first splash screen - I think it's the bios splash screen - had lines of colored pixels covering it. It then displayed a screen that had lots of "(" on it. After that it showed the normal windows 7 splash screen as if it were going to load into Windows. Before getting much further, it BSODed on me. It was a 0x0000003B stop error. At nvlddmkm.sys. A little digging let verified that this was a problem with an nVidia graphics device, not a real shocker. Windows decided it would try to help me diagnose the problem, which it's only answer to was a System Restore, which did nothing to alleviate the problem. I was able to boot up fine in safe mode and was not able to roll back the driver, however I did uninstall the driver and reboot. I still had the graphical anomalies during the first two screens (same colored "."'s and weird "("'s), but there was NOT a stop error. Windows loaded up, found a default driver for the device and installed it and I restarted to let it load - and had yet another BSOD Stop error. Repeat driver uninstall, this time I reloaded the same version (I think it's possible that I was running a 32 bit version or a vista versus windows 7 version, but I don't have that information handy) of the nVidia driver from their website. Restart, same anomalies, same Stop Error. I am at a loss - At this point all I can think is that the firmware for the Video cards got fried or there's actual damage to the cards which I sincerely hope is not the case but the sooner I know the better. Any insight into what I might be able to do to troubleshoot/fix this problem would be most helpful. Attached below is a dump from DxDiag. • Yesterday's broken codebase hunt me back

    - by sandun dhammika
I need a fun oky. I just love this openmoko hardware and hacking into it. Please could somebody help me to compile qemu.I 'm so sad and I want to compile qemu and it required the GCC3.x and then I downloaded gcc 3.2 but when I configure it and build it, it gives a very sad error message. I have searched patches and workaround all over the Internet to this, but I couldn't find any alternative for this. I'm out of my patience now. I want that virtual machine ready and I want to make a debug host cos I don't have some money to buy original neo 1937 hardware. The patch that I have found comes with a nasty error too. I'm so sick of it.Any idea how could I fix this problem and make this work? Please please I'm begging you somebody help me please. Thanks all.

  • Using GraphicsServices.h/GSEvent as well as compiling CLI iPhone tools with XCode

    - by Peter Hajas
I sent this to KennyTM (has all the private framework headers on GitHub) but I figured I'd ask here too just in case someone has some good ideas or any way to help me out. I'm trying to write a command line utility that sends GSEvents to operate the keyboard, touch/drag elements onscreen, and operate hardware buttons (volume, home, sleep, etc.) I grabbed the MouseSupport code and tried to look through it, but I couldn't find the easiest way to send GSEvents. I'm hoping someone here can help me. First, what's the simplest way to declare a GSEvent and send it? I looked at the iPhone development wiki, but the documentation was very vague. I understand that there's a purple event port (?) that I have to send these events to, but I don't understand how to do that. Could someone offer examples for, say, touching at a coordinate, typing a certain key, or pressing a hardware button? Also, do I have to write or do anything special if I want this utility to operate all applications as well as Springboard? I don't know if this is a special case because I want it at the OS level. Ideally, I would SSH into the phone, start the program, and it would send GSEvents that would be handled by whatever application was open. As far as compiling this code, is there any way to do so under XCode? I don't know what sort of project template I should use (if any) and this is throwing me off. I don't need "build and go" support, I'm more than happy to scp the program over to the phone. I understand that compiling the code is also feasible on the phone. I have all of the headers from the SDK on my phone along with iphone-gcc, but when compiling some test programs I still get errors about not finding mach headers and CoreFoundation. Is there an easier way to do this? Lastly, are there other guides or pieces of literature that anyone can point me towards for learning more about this? I'm excited to get into open iPhone development (I have experience with the official SDK, but I want to go deeper). Thanks for any and all help people can offer!

  • mysqld crashes on any statement

    - by ??iu
I restarted my slave to change configuration settings to skip reverse hostname lookup on connecting and to enable the slow query log. I edited /etc/my.cnf making only these changes, then restarted mysqld with /etc/init.d/mysql restart All appeared to be well but when I connect to msyqld remotely or locally though it connects okay a slight problem is that mysqld crashes whenever you try to issue any kind of statement. Hi, I want to use the Xilinx hardware module of the ICAP controller in my own design. This module uses the following library: library hwicap_v5_00_a; use hwicap_v5_00_a.all; I was looking in the directories as well as subdirectories of Xilinx\12.1\ISE_DS\EDK\hw\XilinxProcessorIPLib\pcores but I could not find the package declaration of hwicap. Anyone an idea where Xilinx "hides" this information. Many thanks

  • Application Interface between a PC and an embedded device

    - by sasayins
Hi, How can I make an application interface so that a PC application can communicate to an embedded device like a POS terminal? Like for example, an embedded device like POS terminal that has an embedded linux as an OS. Then I want a PC application to communicate in that POS terminal and access its module hardware like for example its magnetic stripe reader. What implementation should I create in the device, should I use CORBA or something related in that technology so that a PC application can communicate in the POS terminal? Many thanks.

How could one get started with smartcards programming? I am asking here about all the toolkit he needs in order to get started: books, tutorials, hardware etc. I am planning in playing around with a couple of smartcards programmers and I am pretty new to this field. Edit: I am mostly interested in programmers that play nice with Unix-like operating systems. Also, I am not sure how this works ... but I would like to program them in C/C++
