  • How to avoid damage to ISO archives?

    So had a problem where a 16GB ISO was damaged(likely my own fault using standard windows copy dialog instead of proper copy tool like robocopy with verification turned on). It took several hours but i managed to restore the ISO(basicly i rebuilt the damaged parts and recompiled).Namely some .rar archives inside it were unreadable but the ISO itself was readable. So im wondering how can i further protect something like this from happening again?.Obviously proper copy tool but mayble something else?.Perhaps set as "read only" could help?.I generally don't move these files a lot and if i need to acces them then it's only for opening/extracting.

  • How to get a good clean newspaper scan?

    I tried a few times to scan newspaper articles, but the images I got were always blotchy and with bad colors (sort of like this). Sometimes I see some really good scans, like this. What is the trick to get such good results? Do I need some high-quality scanner, or do I need some good photoshop filters? If there was something I could do using free tools it would be awesome.

  • Convert video to apng/png?

    I tried to do this with ffmpeg but failed (i also failled making animated gifs). Is there a simple to use free program (command line is ok) to convert videos to animated pngs? As long as it doesnt dump the video frame by frame into png files and create a monster size png then i should like it.(I didnt see an option to make ffmpeg not dump every frame) From the wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APNG

  • Merging cuesheet chapter halves into single track for an audiobook

    I have an audiobook that I have ripped and I need some help constructing chapters. I have already made some cue sheets TITLE "Bookname" PERFORMER "the Author" FILE "File1.FLAC" wave ; 23971906.667 milliseconds TRACK 01 AUDIO TITLE "_Intro" INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 02 AUDIO TITLE "CH 01" INDEX 01 24:15:50 TRACK 03 AUDIO TITLE "CH 02" INDEX 01 66:21:00 TRACK 04 AUDIO TITLE "CH 03" INDEX 01 87:05:00 The audio book is in two files. The chapter at the end of the first file is continued in the second file. However, the second file restates: The publisher Book Title List item Blah blah blah I would like to merge the two 'halves' of the chapter in one seamless track. The only way I can think to do this would be be: Bulk cut down the tracks. Drop the junk info into junk track Continue the track listings as normal Take the two "halves" of the target chapter and build a separate cue sheet for it. I know there has to be an easier way. I am ok with making the 'junk' info a 'gap' or something. These are are FLAC files that will be converted to MP3 for my phone and other potable devices. I have read the primers on cue sheets, but I am just not getting it.

  • Best format for backing up data in Blu Ray

    We are in the process of backing up our hard drives to Blu Rays. I am creating tar.gz files and burning them to Blu Ray. Is it possible to use a simple (preferably Python-based) solution for creating images of those tar.gz files, of a predetermined size (to fit in the Blu Ray), and simply burn this images to the disc? Do you have any other approach for creating physical back-up of your hard drives?

  • Install Windows 8 64-bit over the top of Windows 8 32-bit

    I currently have Windows 8 32-bit installed from MSDN (I didn't realise at the time that my processor supports 64-bit). I understand that you can't upgrade within Windows 32-bit to 64-bit directly from the ISO. I have burned the ISO to a DVD, and have attempted booting from this drive. The problem I am encountering: The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors. File: CI.dll Error code: 0xc0000221 You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.     I have a collection of .tif files but when I open them on Mac OS X 10.5 they show up as solid black and I don't know why. thanks Upon further inspection at really high brightness there are some out of focus objects viewable. It looks as if I am getting the first couple bits of each pixel but not the entire range of values.

  • Scanned JPEGs are large and slow to load - can they be optimized losslessly?

    I have hundreds of JPEG photographs which were scanned about 5 years ago from negative using a Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual IV. The dimensions are ~4500x3000, and the filesize is around 12Mb, compared to shots from a DSLR with dimensions of 3000x2300 and filesize of 2-4Mb (actually, these are the output from a RAW convertor). The filesize is obviously quite a big difference, but the issue that's bothering me is that the (perceived) loading time is at least 10 times slower. Is this size/speed discrepancy likely to be because the scanner software saved the JPEGs inefficiently / using an old compression format, or is it simply that the scanned negatives contain much more "detail" (in the form of grain/noise) than the digital images? If the former, is there a way to losslessly optimize them? I've tried re-exporting the scanned files to full size JPEG from my RAW software but the filesize is pretty much the same. Both files will have been saved at 100 quality.

  • Paint Shop Pro-like open-source software?

    I need to add shapes that have been available in Paint Shop Pro since version 7 like curved arrows, etc. I gave Paint.Net and IrfanView a try, but they don't seem to support more sophisticated shapes than straight lines, circles, or rectangles. If this is correct, does someone know of a PSP-equivalent open-source solution for Windows? Thank you.

    I would like to download all images in a web page. The tool should be smart enough to examine the css and javascript files in the page source to look for the images. Ideally, it should also replicate the folder hierarchy, saving the images in the correct folder. For example, the web page may have some images for menu items stored in images/menu/ and for background images it may be stored in images/bg/. Is there such a tool that you know of? (preferably in Windows but Linux is still ok) Many thanks to you all.

Is there anyway to set a picture style (Picture Tools | Format Picture Styles) as default on every paste, preferably without creating a macro?

  • What software can copy the whole hard drive with Operating System to DVD-R, and be able to "refresh

    What software can take a snapshot of a Win XP or Win 7 machine -- burning all files into a DVD-R, and then be able to boot from that DVD-R can restore the whole machine back to that state stored inside the DVD-R? Maybe for Win XP, it is easier as the OS can be just 1 or 2GB on the hard drive, but for Win 7, a fresh installation is already 16GB on the hard drive, so it will need several DVD-R to take the snapshot? thanks. (any of these software are open source?)

  • How can I mount .IMG floppy disk images which are not 1.44MB or any other floppy format?

    I have several .IMG files, but they are different sizes which do not comform to any floppy disk format, i.e. not 1.44MB, 720K, 2.88MB... these .IMG files are like 420K, 832K, etc. Additional info: Winimage, rar, Magic ISO... none of these worked. The files I want to download are located in www.vetusware.com under DBMSOracle6. They are 2 files in rar format, but when I extract the rar's, I get forty-two .IMG files with varied sizes, not 1.44MB, etc. If anyone could please give it a try and succeed in mounting or reading the extractd IMG files, I would appreciate you letting me know how you achieved it, I really need this legacy Oracle 6/DOS version!..     I'm spoiled by FastStone on the PC. I'm looking for decent freeware/shareware for Mac OS X that will allow basic photo editing, particularly something that lets me pick a crop size or aspect ratio by entering in numbers rather than just a freehand crop (I need to make sure it's 8.5"x11" aspect ratio). Any suggestions?
