• Deploying locally compiled binaries on server

  Hi, I have a Zen based VPS server that runs on a dual-core AMD Opteron 64-bit machine. I have some locally developed C++ based daemons that I would want to deploy in that machine. My local machine is an Intel core 2 duo laptop. Can I execute binaries compiled from source code on my machine directly on the above mentioned server? I am a newbie in this area. Would be great if someone could throw light on the standard practices in this kind of situation. Thanks in advance

  As a programmer of data-entry forms of all kinds, I often find myself making fields for things like Country and State. Consider: Perhaps a list the 50 United States names is an easy thing to find (does one include DC?) , but the countries are not. Nearly every site you find has a differing list with all of the political goings on over the years, and they become outdated quickly. What's the best practice regarding population of these kinds of lists? Is there an official list somewhere that one uses to populate these kinds of formal/official fields? Where do you get this data from, when it's not exactly specified in the specs?

• Whats the best to way convert a set of Java objects to another set of objects?

  Basic Java question here from a real newbie. I have a set of Java objects (of class "MyClass") that implement a certain interface (Interface "MyIfc"). I have a set of these objects stored in a private variable in my class that is declared as follows: protected Set<MyClass> stuff = new HashSet<MyClass>(); I need to provide a public method that returns this set as a collection of objects of type "MyIfc". public Collection<MyIfc> getMyStuff() {...} How do I do the conversion? The following line gives me an error that it can't do the conversion. I would have guessed the compiler knew that objects of class MyClass implemented MyIfc and therefore would have handled it. Collection<MyIfc> newstuff = stuff; Any enlightenment is appreciated.

• Working with Foreign languages

  My DB needs to hold strings containing foreign language characters such that; User enters string into form, form submitted and string added to DB, string will be displayed on page for viewing. I would like to use UTF8 as this will be able to handle all of the required languages. Currently I believe my DB is set to 'latin1' but webpages are capable of displaying correct charachters anyways. Problems arise when trying to set textareas to hold foreign charachters and when viewing DB via command-line. How can I implement this most effectively? My plan was to blitz the whole site such that:DB Charset is UTF8 and web pages charset is UTF8. Could someone give me the minimal commands on how to do this so I don't end up duplicating things (Having "UTF8" commands everywhere when I really just need one) and making things too difficult to control.   I am contemplating writing my first blackberry app. I am fundamentally, a C/C++ programmer (not Java), can anyone provide some guidelines on the quickest route (i.e. shallowest learning curve) to writing a blackberry app? Any resources/links would be useful. As an aside: In an ideal world, I would like to write once and deploy for both Blackberry and the iPhone, but since I am targetting largely business people, I guess blackberry should be my target - right? • Google Play: how dev can give (already purchased) app to customer as a gift?

  Yes, SO, I know, it's not a "programmer's" question:) But customers sometimes help us (devs) with our code, so we (devs) shold be grateful. I think answer to my question will be useful for all fellow android devs. User has purchased my app. Refund period (15min) is over of course. Now I'd like to return money to him as a gift, because he helped me in testing a little. If I refund the entire order in Checkout-Orders will user keep my app 'purchased'? I mean will he be able to uninstall and install it again from GooglePlay-MyApps and will app be marked "purchased"? Will Google LVL accept him to run the app? I've done such refunds before, but then they called it "Android Market", and refund was 12h, and there were no LVL. Maybe somebody know another way to make a small gift using Google Play?

• How to identify deadlock conditions in a third-party application?

  I am using a third-party application to handle batch CD audio extraction via multiple FireWire attached devices, but the application frequently (though non-deterministically) hangs during the extraction. I suspect that the multithreaded application is deadlocking over some shared resource. The developer, however, suspects the problem lies elsewhere but is not addressing the problem at this time. I would like to be able to do some legwork on my end to a) prove the condition exists and b) ideally point him in the right direction. The problems: while I used to be a programmer, it's been awhile and I need to shake off the dust (last work I did was back in '99 and it was under Solaris, while the application runs under XP). Rather than there being a dearth of information online, there's almost too much to digest. Are there any suggested guides or tutorials that might help me get back up to speed sufficient enough to help identify and/or diagnose the deadlock, or are there tools or approaches that I should study up on to aid me in my task?   I´m (professionally) creating a SQL Server database client by using Visual Studio 2008, C# - Windows Form(s). And I´m using all the built in stuff, provided by my friend VS Studio, dragging and dropping, creating SQL query tables in DataSet.xsd, and so on... I like that. But! I would like to try out LINQ, as I would like to have something that to me is more intuitive than pure SQL... And (here comes the newbie-problem to be solved)! I don´t know where to put the LINQ code to make a table "pop up" in the Data Sources window - meaning I´m completely stuck! How should I do it?

• How to improve the speed of a loop containing a sqlalchemy query statement as conditional

  This loop checks if a record is in the sqlite database and builds a list of dictionaries for those records that are missing and then executes a multiple insert statement with the list. This works but it is very slow (at least i think it is slow) as it takes 5 minutes to loop over 3500 queries. I am a complete newbie in python, sqlite and sqlalchemy so I wonder if there is a faster way of doing this. list_dict = [] session = Session() for data in data_list: if session.query(Class_object).filter(Class_object.column_name_01 == data[2]).filter(Class_object.column_name_00 == an_id).count() == 0: list_dict.append({'column_name_00':a_id, 'column_name_01':data[2]}) conn = engine.connect() conn.execute(prices.insert(),list_dict) conn.close() session.close() edit: I moved session = Session() outside the loop. • Rails: Link changes one attribute and then goes back

  Rails newbie here. I have a list of items which can have a status represented by an integer (right now its just 1=active 0=inactive). What I want is next to each item a link to change the status of that item. So it might look like this: A nice item - Enable Another pretty item - Disable I can't think of how to make the link work. I just want a user to click the link and then the page refreshes and the item get updated. This doesn't work: <%= link_to "Enable", :controller => "items", :action => "update", :status => 1 %>

  A guy came to me there recently with a half done web app that has been created using VB.NET, nothing major, just a normal site. His original programmer couldn't continue so he wants me to finish it. Problem is I don't program using VB.NET nor have I any intention of learning it for a project this small. Usually I would run from something like this but I need the cash. Should I take the project and continue it using C# or just leave it. Has anyone had a similar experience and how did it turn out.

Search did not give me a hint, how can i behave with the following situation: I'd love to have 2 OSGI implementations of the same interface: one is regular, the other should work (be active/present/whatever) on the given time period (f.e for Christmas weeks :)) The main goal is to call the same interface without specifying any flags/properties/without manual switching of ranking. Application should somehow switch implementation for this special period, doing another/regular job before and after :) I'm a newbie, maybe i do not completely understand OSGI concept somewhere, sorry for that of give me a hint or link, sorry for my English.   Hi, ok, I managed to read from xml file using NSXMLParser but now i don't know how to write to xml file. I have a xml file , say <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <root> <user id="abcd" password="pass1"/> <user id="efg" password="pass2"/> </root> Now when a new user enters details, I want to store them in a new tag.. lets say like, the id is "hhhh" and password is"pass3" I want to add a new tag with attributes as such <user id="hhhh" password="pass3"/> to the xml file. How should I do this. Please explain in an elaborate way . I am a newbie here. Any links to tutorials or examples will be much helpful. Thanks

• problem with generating PDF and session_start()

  Hi All, I've been using PDF class produced by R&OS successfully in a number of recent developments. I'd like to use it in a page that performs a database query before generating a PDF (it's basically a summary of the session, so I'm using session_id() as part of the query) All is fine if I run this in Firefox - not fine in IE. I think the loading of session_start() is doing something with headers that's upsetting IE as it appears unable to load the page (comment off session_start and the page loads fine). I'm getting a little concerned as, on further investigation, it appears that R&OS is not supported ... bad newbie learning experience and I really don't want to have to try adopt another class system this late in the day. Have you any thoughts as to what I could try next? Thankx G

• Delphi : What is the best way for passing data between forms?

  It may seem a little newbie, but I really have got problem with it. I have a form (not the main one)for getting many different data form the user and I want to pass it to a manager class for creating an object with these. The problem is that I can't have this class to use the other unit (getting circle uses) and also it doesn't have access to the manager class instance (which is in main form). So, what shall I do? I've already considered using public variable but I have a bad feeling about it (regarding OOD patterns). Any ideas? thanks in advance.

• Why do I have to give an identifier?

  In code: try { System.out.print(fromClient.readLine()); } catch(IOException )//LINE 1 { System.err.println("Error while trying to read from Client"); } In code line marked as LINE 1 compiler forces me to give an identifier even though I'm not using it. Why this unnatural constrain? And then if I type an identifier I'm getting warning that identifier isn't used. It just doesn't make sense to me, forcing a programmer to do something unnecesarry and surplus. And after me someone will revise this code and will be wondering if I didn't use this variable on purpouse or I just forgot. So in order to avoid that I have to write additional comment explaining why I do not use variable which is unnecessary in my code. Thanks

  When it comes to coding style I'm a pretty relaxed programmer. I'm not firmly dug into a particular coding style. I'd prefer a consistent overall style in a large code base but I'm not going to sweat every little detail of how the code is formatted. Still there are some coding styles that drive me crazy. No matter what I can't look at examples of these styles without reaching for a VIM buffer to "fix" the "problem". I can't help it. It's not even wrong, I just can't look at it for some reason. For instance the following comment style almost completely prevents me from actually being able to read the code. if (someConditional) // Comment goes here { other code } What's the most frustrating style you've encountered?

• antlr: Best practice to integrate generated parser into the system

  Here is the background, I am trying to create a DSL to allow customer write simple scripts to query into our mongodb based database. I choose antlr to implement the DSL. From my understanding (and pls let me know if it's not correct) there are 2 approaches to integrate antlr generated parser into the system: Embed code into the grammar file so that the generated parser could be used directly to make query to the database and return result in a certain format (e.g. json encoded) Keep the parser purely a parser, after feed the DSL file to it, and construct the query in another class by retrieving the AST from generated parser class So antlrers, which one do you think is the way I as an antlr newbie should go? Can you list the pros and cos of each approach, or you have other way to recommend?

• How to get "printer ready bytes" from a source in c#?

  Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of trouble here, hoping you can help a fellow programmer out. I have an application that receives a pointer to raw bytes (plus length and stuff) and sends said raw data to a printer. This is important, I have no choice but to use this method to get any printing done. If I send a raw string, it will print with no problem. However, I need to be able to print formatted text, images, etc. So the thing is... I would like to be able to get printer ready bytes from a given source (maybe a pdf, or html, does not matter as long as it contains formatted text and/or images). It would be like "splitting" the print command like so: a) Open file and read data b) Load printer data into memory c) Send bytes to printer Obviously, I've got a) and c) covered, it's b) the one that's breaking my head. • Trying to get excel 2003 into already made windows form

  good afternoon everyone :) I got sucha dilemma! (hate being new at stuff!) What my problem is is that I have a project that is in full design mode swing right now. I built it using the Windows form.. Anyways, on one of my forms..that I already started building (very painstakingly).. Minds have changed and now what needs to be on that form is either a full excel 2003 workbook..or at the very least..excel worksheet. The problem is that I have not been using studio 2008 for long..and coding experience shows the same. Can someone please tell me how the heck I can put a worksheet or a workbook on that form without starting my whole project over using office forms?   I'm running a day for 30 kids aged 11-18 about computer game programming. They have all opted to do it, but they have no experience at all of programming. My main aim is for them to learn a few things: programming is hard/challenging programming is something they can learn to do being a computer games programmer != playing games all day a little more insight into how games actually work I'd thought of splitting them into two groups, of younger/less experience and older/more experience, then doing slightly different things. I'd considered showing them Scratch, Game Maker, before showing them the basics of Python and getting them to write a simple text based game (perhaps something like, computer picks a random number, you have to guess it in as few guesses as possible, computer says higher/lower for each guess). Does anyone have any ideas of things to do/show them/ways to teach them?

• How do I create static instances of a class inside that class?

  I have a class Color that holds values for the red, green, and blue channels of a color. The class constructor lets you create a new color by specifying values for the three channels. However, for convenience, I would also like to have some "premade" colors available for the programmer. For example instead of having something like DrawRectangle(new Color(1, 0, 0)); you would be able to say DrawRectangle(Color.Red); Where Color.Red is an instance of Color that lives inside the Color class. How can I declare these instances of Color inside the Color class? If there is a name for this type of technique I'd like to know it as I had no idea what search terms to use when I was looking for help online.
