  • How do programmers work together on a project?

    - by Laith J
Hello, I've always programmed alone, I'm still a student so I never programmed with anyone else, I haven't even used a version control system before. I'm working on a project now that requires knowledge of how programmers work together on a piece of software in a company. How is the software compiled? Is it from the version control system? Is it by individual programmers? Is it periodic? Is it when someone decides to build or something? Are there any tests that are done to make sure it "works"? Anything will do. Thanks.

  • Breadth-First in Prolog

    - by Ricardo
What is the general idea of using breadth-first over the default depth-first search scheme in Prolog? Not taking infinite branches? Is there any general way to use breadth-first in Prolog? I've been googling around and I didn't find too much useful info for a novice.

  • Self Assesstment Tests for Programmers

    - by THX1138.6
I want to help the Dev team identify areas of knowledge (practical and theoretical) that they can work on. Though I am big believer in focusing on people's strengths being a good programmer requires (I think) being challenged by concepts and ideas that don't always come naturally. We work largely in the web app space using PHP & MySQL but better skills in data modelling, query optimisation, use of MVC and OOP etc. would help the team and the company a lot. I want to help the Dev team manage their careers, explore and expand their skills sets. Be all they can be and better than they were previously. I know its an idealistic goal but work must be about more than simply getting the work done. There should be some time to review, to learn, to grow and get better. Any thoughts, ideas, opinions and directions to tests or similar resources would be greatly appreciated.

  • Clear data at serial port in Linux in C?

    - by ipkiss
Hello guys, I am testing the sending and receiving programs with the code as The main() function is below: include include include include include include include "read_write.h" int fd; int initport(int fd) { struct termios options; // Get the current options for the port... tcgetattr(fd, &options); // Set the baud rates to 19200... cfsetispeed(&options, B9600); cfsetospeed(&options, B9600); // Enable the receiver and set local mode... options.c_cflag |= (CLOCAL | CREAD); options.c_cflag &= ~PARENB; options.c_cflag &= ~CSTOPB; options.c_cflag &= ~CSIZE; options.c_cflag |= CS8; // Set the new options for the port... tcsetattr(fd, TCSANOW, &options); return 1; } int main(int argc, char **argv) { fd = open("/dev/pts/2", O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY | O_NDELAY); if (fd == -1) { perror("open_port: Unable to open /dev/pts/1 - "); return 1; } else { fcntl(fd, F_SETFL, 0); } printf("baud=%d\n", getbaud(fd)); initport(fd); printf("baud=%d\n", getbaud(fd)); char sCmd[254]; sCmd[0] = 0x41; sCmd[1] = 0x42; sCmd[2] = 0x43; sCmd[3] = 0x00; if (!writeport(fd, sCmd)) { printf("write failed\n"); close(fd); return 1; } printf("written:%s\n", sCmd); usleep(500000); char sResult[254]; fcntl(fd, F_SETFL, FNDELAY); if (!readport(fd,sResult)) { printf("read failed\n"); close(fd); return 1; } printf("readport=%s\n", sResult); close(fd); return 0; } read_write.h: #include <stdio.h> /* Standard input/output definitions */ include /* String function definitions */ include /* UNIX standard function definitions */ include /* File control definitions */ include /* Error number definitions */ include /* POSIX terminal control definitions */ int writeport(int fd, char *chars) { int len = strlen(chars); chars[len] = 0x0d; // stick a after the command chars[len+1] = 0x00; // terminate the string properly int n = write(fd, chars, strlen(chars)); if (n < 0) { fputs("write failed!\n", stderr); return 0; } return 1; } int readport(int fd, char *result) { int iIn = read(fd, result, 254); result[iIn-1] = 0x00; if (iIn < 0) { if (errno == EAGAIN) { printf("SERIAL EAGAIN ERROR\n"); return 0; } else { printf("SERIAL read error %d %s\n", errno, strerror(errno)); return 0; } } return 1; } and got the issue: In order to test with serial port, I used the socat (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualSerialPort ) to create a pair serial ports on Linux and test my program with these port. The first time the program sends the data and the program receives data is ok. However, if I read again or even re-write the new data into the serial port, the return data is always null until I stop the virtual serial port and start it again, then the write and read data is ok, but still, only one time. (In the real case, the sending part will be done by another device, I am just taking care of the reading data from the serial port. I wrote both parts just to test my reading code.) Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks a lot.

  • Collapsible controls in MFC (example included)

    - by John
In the WindowsXP Control panel, you can see a nice collapsible panel control on the left: These are not just collapsible, but animated too. I wondered if these are any kind of control accessible to a developer, specifically in MFC? Or are they custom/bespoke functionality?

  • How to call schedule method in NSObject?

    - by Tattat
It is my Object.... -(id)init{ if(self = [super init]){ [self schedule:@selector(testCalled:) interval:1.0]; } } -(void)testCalled{ NSLog(@"Called from my Object"); } I already add this line in the .h...: -(void)testCalled; It prompt me that "MyObject" may not respond to -'schedule:interval:', but in my scene, which have a super class CCLayer can call this method,so, I think it is a method from CCLayer, how can I replace it with NSObject default method?

  • how/resources to compile a procedural language into [sql]

    - by Philip
I am looking into the possibility/feasibility/resources for building a cross compiler which takes a procedural or Object Oriented language like C, or Java and compiling it into SQL. I understand that the advantage of SQL code is performing set operations which is fundamentally different from procedural languages which generally process 1 at a time. If anyone has done this before, or if it is thought of as too complicated to do or any other ideas/concerns/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Philip

Hi Guys I need to implement PSO's (namely charged and quantum PSO's). My questions are these: What Velocity Update strategy do each PSO's use (Synchronous or Asynchronous particle update) What social networking topology does each of the PSO's use (Von Neumann, Ring, Star, Wheel, Pyramid, Four Clusters) For now, these are my issues. All your help will be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Confusion regarding laziness

    - by Abhinav Kaushik
I have a function myLength = foldl (\ x _ -> x + 1) 0 which fails with stack overflow with input around 10^6 elements (myLength [1..1000000] fails). I believe that is due to the thunk build up since when I replace foldl with foldl', it works. So far so good. But now I have another function to reverse a list : myReverse = foldl (\ acc x -> x : acc) [] which uses the lazy version foldl (instead of foldl') When I do myLength . myReverse $ [1.1000000]. This time it works fine. I fail to understand why foldl works for the later case and not for former?

  • Measuring Programmers' Productivity. Bad, good or invasive?

    - by Fraga
A client needs my company to develop an app that will be able to measure the programmer productivity, by getting information from VS, IE, SSMS, profiler and VMware. For example: Lines, Methods, Classes (Added, Deleted, Modified) How many time spent in certain file, class, method, specific task, etc. How many time in different stages of the development cycle (Design, Coding, Debugging, Compiling, Testing) Real lines of code. Etc They told me they want to implement PSP. Would you resign if a company wants to measure this way? OR Would you install this kind of software for self improvement?

  • Tracking the user function that threw the exception

    - by makerofthings7
I've been given a large application with only one try..catch at the outer most level. This application also throws exceptions all the time, and is poorly documented. Is there any pattern I can implement that will tell me what user method is being called, the exception being thrown, and also the count of exceptions? I'm thinking of using a dictionary with reflection to get the needed information, but I'm not sure if this will work. What do you think?

  • Communication protocols in UDP

    - by Betamoo
After many hours, I have discovered that the given udp server needs the following steps for a successful communication: 1- Send "Start Message" on a given port 2- Wait to receive from server on any port 3- Then the port dedicated to you to send further data to the server equals the port you have received on it + 1 So I am asking if this kind is a known protocol/handshaking, or it is only special to this server?? PS: All above communication were in udp sockets in C# PS: Related to a previous question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2757868/about-c-udp-sockets Thanks

  • seperating interface and implemention with normal functions

    this seems like it should be pretty simple, im probably leaving something simple out. this is the code im trying to run. it is 3 files, 2*cpp and 1*header. -------------lab6.h ifndef LAB6_H_INCLUDED define LAB6_H_INCLUDED int const arraySize = 10; int array1[arraySize]; int array2[arraySize]; void generateArray(int[], int ); void displayArray(int[], int[], int ); void reverseOrder(int [],int [], int); endif // LAB6_H_INCLUDED -----------------lab6.cpp include using std::cout; using std::endl; include using std::rand; using std::srand; include using std::time; include using std::setw; include "lab6.h" void generateArray(int array1[], int arraySize) { srand(time(0)); for (int i=0; i<10; i++) { array1[i]=(rand()%10); } } void displayArray(int array1[], int array2[], int arraySize) { cout<<endl<<"Array 1"<<endl; for (int i=0; i<arraySize; i++) { cout<<array1[i]<<", "; } cout<<endl<<"Array 2"<<endl; for (int i=0; i<arraySize; i++) { cout<<array2[i]<<", "; } } void reverseOrder(int array1[],int array2[], int arraySize) { for (int i=0, j=arraySize-1; i<arraySize;j--, i++) { array2[j] = array1[i]; } } ------------and finally main.cpp include "lab6.h" int main() { generateArray(array1, arraySize); reverseOrder(array1, array2, arraySize); displayArray(array1, array2, arraySize); return 0; }

  • Practices for Foreground/Background threads in .NET

    - by Andrei Taptunov
I work with in-house legacy communication framework which exposes some high level abstractions. These abstractions are wrappers with some logic around .NET threads. When I looked at code I've noticed that some abstractions are wrappers around foreground threads while others are wrappers around background threads. The sad thing is that I don't see any logic why in some cases foreground threads are used and background in other cases. Are there any guidelines or patterns & practices when it's better to choose one over another on server side and client side (I believe there should be some difference)?

  • Any ideas on How to search a 2D array quickly?

    - by Tattat
    I jave a 2D array like this, just like a matrix: {{1, 2, 4, 5, 3, 6}, {8, 3, 4, 4, 5, 2}, {8, 3, 4, 2, 6, 2}, //code skips... ... } I want to get all the "4" position, instead of searching the array one by way, and return the position, how can I search it faster / more efficient? thz in advance.
