• Jquery help for current time indication within a range

  I'm looking for a simple light-weight jquery plugin that'll help me show something like this in my website: Essentially, this is like a timeline. I know the start and end dates (in that, they don't change) and the position of today's date just gives an indication of how far along I am into a task I took up on Jun 1, 2012. That's all I need it for - a better visual indication of my current status. I've found a lot of jquery timeline plugins but they are too complex for what I'm trying to do. Any ideas or suggestions? • Use LINQ to SQL results inside SQL Server stored procedure

  Note: I'm not trying to call a SQL Server stored proc using a L2SQL datacontext. I use LINQPad for some fairly complex "reporting" that takes L2SQL output saved to an Array and is processed further. For example, it's usually much easier to do multiple levels of grouping with LINQ to Objects instead of trying to optimize a T-SQL query to run in a reasonable amount of time. What would be the easiest way to take the end result of one of these "applications" and use that in a SQL Server 2008 stored proc? The idea is to use the data for a Reporting Services Report, rather than copying and pasting into Excel (manual labor). The reports need to be accessible on the report server (not using the Report Server control in an application). I could output CSV and read that somehow via command line exec, but that seems like a hack. Thanks for your help.

• Can you solve my odd Sharepoint CSS cache / customising problem?

  I have a weird situation with my sharepoint css. It is deployed as part of a .wsp solution and up until now everything has been fine. The farm it deploys too has a couple of webfront ends and a single apps server and SQL box. The symptom is that if I deploy the solution, then use a webbrowser to view the page it has no styles, and if I access the .css directly I see the first 100 or so bytes of the .css. However if I go into sharepoint designer and look at the file it is looks fine, and if I check it out and publish it (customising the file but not actually changing anything in it) then the website works fine and the css downloads completely. There is some fairly complex caching on the servers Disk based and object caches. as far as I can tell I have cleared these (and an issreset should clear them anyway... shouldn't it?) I have used this tool to clear the blobcache from the whole farm http://blobcachefarmflush.codeplex.com/

• Do you draw the entire object?

  Hi I'm working on learning 3d game development and I'm starting with JavaScript and the html5 canvas and I was wondering if I were to have a 3d model do I draw the entire model(front, back, etc) and let the web browser decide what to render or should I try to just draw the sides that are in view of the camera? I ask this because I can see how it would be faster to do the latter of the 2 but that can get very complex and I'll need to do quite a bit more research to find how to do that. Thanks!!

• How to automate testing of a browser-based app?

  If it were a windows program, I would use Auto it to automate testing. Is there something similar for browser-based apps? Nothing too complex, it should just allow scripting (preferable for me to macro-recording) to simulate human interaction with the browser, which means being able to identify fields of a form by name, inject text into some, simulate mouse-click on others, etc and then, after submitting a form, should be able to read text certain named controls, check the status of others (checked, radio group index, read-only, etc). While I do appreciate a full featured product, I don't appreciate a steep learning curve. so something as simple as the scripting of Auto It woudl be fine. I don't know if it makes a difference which browser is used, but I could live with MSIE 6 or higher (maybe 7 or higher at a push).

• Wordpress page linking

  I am trying to implement WordPress into quite a large site with a complex page structure and struggling to get normal pages to work (not created through the admin) The pages are created, but when I link to them, nothing happens... The desired url - www.website.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/page.php The actual url- www.website.com/wp-content/themes/themename/dir1/dir2/dir3/page.php The problem with linking to the latter is that it breaks the WordPress functions I don't want to have to give every page a template, then add it through the admin, it is too much work. I only need 2 pages to contain dynamic content. Am I being silly? I am really confused.

  Hi All, I'm a computer science student, and I'm just starting to write relatively larger programs for my coursework (between 750 - 1500 lines). Up until now, it's been possible to get by with any reasonable level of modularization and object oriented design. However, now that I'm writing more complex code for my assignments I'd like to learn to write better code. Can anyone point me in the direction of some resources for learning about what sort of things to look for when designing your program's architecture so that you can make it as modularized as possible? The general idea is that we have 3 levels of security: a simple user - that can only access basic data that is in a data repository a manager - that can open up data repositories a superuser - that can open up repository factories. each repository contains various data types(text, images, etc etc). We are looking for authentication methods that will allow us: 1. Scalability. 2. Customization. 3. To create permissions that will effect the GUI + deny access to certain pages. 4. To create predefined roles - that will allow for easy setup of new users. 5. To create custom roles for specific users - allowing them permission sets that are different from the predefined roles. • Embeddable unit testing framework for mixed Windows app

  I want to test portions of a very complex app which includes both a major native Windows component and a substantial WPF GUI. Due to complexities I can't detail, it is impossible to run the native portion independently nor can I isolate the areas I want to test (spare me the lectures, we're talking a huge legacy code base and we do have refactoring plans). I'm looking for a unit test kit I can invoke on the native side but must be able to run with the app launched with the managed portion initialised. That seems to rule out the run executable feature of the cfix Windows unit test kit. I really like their philosophy, like WinUnit, of using DLL compilation as a way to add the reflective capabilities missing in C++ and gain a more NUnit-like experience. Ideally, I want something like WinUnit running within the application code and generating an HTML report. I'm trying to introduce more TDD and having things as lean as possible is important.

• Is window.location.href = 'some_page.html' followed by search engines?

  Currently our website uses links to allow the user to change their locale. The problem with this is that you get a lot of random outlinks from each page on the site to... the same page, in other languages. When a search engine traverses this, it gets an excessively complex view of the site. We were going to change it to a form post to avoid this. However, it seems to me that we should just be able to change it to an onclick="window.location.href='change_my_language.php'" rather than an href="change_my_language.php". Am I right? Or do the major search engines scan for and follow this sort of thing nowadays?

• Modular HTML in Adobe AIR? Is It Possible?

  When I write HTML with a PHP backend, I usually have a single header file and a single footer file with some PHP variables in them. The base skeleton for every page calls the header, contains the body content, and then calls the footer. That way, if I want to make changes to the header sitewide, I change one file. I'm working on developing the UI in my first Adobe AIR app and I'm wondering if there's some way to include such files in an HTML based page template there. Obviously, with the file read/write abilities in AIR, I can write a Javascript routine to pull data from a header file, parse it, and inject it into a placeholder. It just seems like such a kludge. I'm thinking there's gotta be some simple way to import a block of HTML into a page without an iFrame or complex post-processor. Something like a PHP include statement or perhaps the old Server Side Includes. Any methods you guys can recommend?

  Hi, After many years of Windows development in C/C++ i've decided to make a move to linux, and see if i can put together a simple screen saver. The code is an SDL based OpenGL particle engine affair, nothing too complex. I've got the code running ok as a stand-alone app, but i have been having some trouble finding out how to build a screen saver app. I'm running ubuntu 10.04 if that makes much difference, but i was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a decent tutorial on building basic gnome screen savers.   How should a complex single-page JS web application be structured on the client-side? Specifically I'm curious about how to cleanly structure the application in terms of its model objects, UI components, any controllers, and objects handling server persistence. MVC seemed like a fit at first. But with UI components nested at various depths (each with their own way of acting on/reacting to model data, and each generating events which they themselves may or may not handle directly), it doesn't seem like MVC can be cleanly applied. (But please correct me if that's not the case.) -- (This question resulted in two suggestions of using ajax, which is obviously needed for anything other than the most trivial one-page app.)

  Recently I came across the SkipList data structure. It really helped me to solve one otherwise critical problem to be solved. I was struggling to solve the same problem with Balanced Binary tree but it became very complex as the tree needs to be always balanced and I wanted to know the existence of not only a particular value but values in certain range. SkipList helped me to solve that problem effectively. I am wondering what else data structures that I need to know? I know - Array, List, Stack, Queue, Linked List, hashtable, tree and its different forms like B-tree, Trie etc. Would like to know if you find some other data structure/concept very interesting to know yet effective enough to be used in a daily development cycle.

  Hi All, Can you Please tell me the resolution rule involved in resolving the meaning of the variable in a typedef. Any link related to the same will be very useful. Example #typedef string* pstring; const pstring parr; Here confusion arises whether const'ness is for pointer or the content. Now based on what thumb rule do can we start resolving the above interpretation of the pstring?. • External GUI/Helper Library for Visual C++?

  I am looking for some kind of library, either open source or bought in, that provides advanced GUI components, helper functions & classes etc. It needs to be something that integrates relatively easily into Visual Studio, and should be based around C++ and Windows. Cross platform isn't needed, and can somtimes make things a little more complex and restricted than single platform, but it is still acceptable. It also needs to be up-to-date and active. There appears to be a number of 'retired' libraries that offer little or no support, so these would not be suitable, as I'm going to need help every now and then! It also needs good documentation. I know about wxWidgets but I'm wondering what other alternatives there are? At first glance, wxWidgets doesn't strike me as what I want/need, especially in the GUI area where the visual components seem striking similar to the stock components. I want more custimization! Is there much out there that meets these requirements?

We are cautioned about not testing the framework, or the database. Good UI design does not lend itself to non-human testing. UI interaction in general is excluded in MVC frameworks. In many apps what is left?. 37signals talks about extensive unit testing, but in an app like Basecamp or Backpack, what exactly are the types of things being tested through appropriate unit tests? What would 100% code coverage mean in that scenario?

  My new boss went to a speech where Deliverance, a kind of proxy allowing to add skin to any html output on the fly, was presented. He decided to use it right after that, no matter how young it is.   I will start a new C++ project (it may have some C components as well) soon and I am looking for a modern, industrial-strength (i.e. non-beta) build system. The software will be created by several developers in 3-5 years and will run on Linux (Mac OS X and Windows might be supported later). I am looking for something that has better comprehensibility, ease-of-use and maintainability than e.g. make but is still powerful enough to handle a complex project. Open source software is preferred. I started looking into Boost.Build, CMake, Maven and SCons so far and liked features and concepts of all of those, but I'm lacking the experience to make a decision for a large project.

• Ray intersection and child camera

  I've been playing with three.js for few weeks now and got few inconsistencies on ray casting. Here is a simplified version demonstrating one of the bug I encoutered : http://jsfiddle.net/eMrhb/12/ The camera is added to the sphere mesh for further use of TrackBallControl for example. scene.add(mesh); mesh.add(camera); Clicking a few times on the sphere and opening the console, show us none of the expected intersections between the ray and the mesh. Adding the camera to the scene (http://jsfiddle.net/eMrhb/9/), solves the problem: scene.add(mesh); scene.add(camera); But I could use a much more complex hierarchy between my scene objects and the camera to suit my needs. Is this a limitation? If it is, is there any workarounds I could use?

I couldn’t figure out how to bind to a table at all. I have built the inline sql that would do this for me but it would destroy my shared pool (not using binds). So a General question how do I bind to complex/composite types using Nhibernate?

• What is Perl's secret of getting small code do so much?

  I've seen many (code-golf) Perl programs out there and even if I can't read them (Don't know Perl) I wonder how you can manage to get such a small bit of code to do what would take 20 lines in some other programming language. What is the secret of Perl? Is there a special syntax that allows you to do complex tasks in few keystrokes? Is it the mix of regular expressions? I'd like to learn how to write powerful and yet short programs like the ones you know from the code-golf challenges here. What would be the best place to start out? I don't want to learn "clean" Perl - I want to write scripts even I don't understand anymore after a week. If there are other programming languages out there with which I can write even shorter code, please tell me.

• interfacing: simplified

  i've been doing some research on interfaces and a simple layman's explanation for what it truly is. For some reason people love using overly complex explanations and jargon to explain truly simple concepts (guess it makes them feel big) and i have a gut feeling it's the same in this case. so from what i could grasp, it seems like interfaces are nothing more than a way to reserve method names, their return type if any, and the type and amount of arguments they accept. so when a class implements an interface (or interfaces) it is forced to define the body of each method from the interface(s). Am i on the nose with this one or do i need to keep digging? p.s. i know javascript doesn't have support for interfaces, but i still need to understand the concept because there are quite a few places where it's shown how to emulate to an extent.
