  • Condor job using DAG with some jobs needing to run the same host

    I have a computation task which is split in several individual program executions, with dependencies. I'm using Condor 7 as task scheduler (with the Vanilla Universe, due do constraints on the programs beyond my reach, so no checkpointing is involved), so DAG looks like a natural solution. However some of the programs need to run on the same host. I could not find a reference on how to do this in the Condor manuals. Example DAG file: JOB A A.condor JOB B B.condor JOB C C.condor JOB D D.condor PARENT A CHILD B C PARENT B C CHILD D I need to express that B and D need to be run on the same computer node, without breaking the parallel execution of B and C.     The problem is fairly simple. I am trying to write a rule, that given the name of the required file will be able to tailor its dependencies. Let's say I have two programs: calc_foo and calc_bar and they generate a file with output dependent on the parameter. My target would have a name 'target_*_*'; for example, 'target_foo_1' would be generated by running './calc_foo 1'. The question is, how to write a makefile that would generate outputs of the two programs for a range of parameters?

  • Handling of data truncation (short reads/writes) in FUSE

    I expect any good program should do all their reads and writes in a loop until all data written/read without relying that write will write everything (even with regular files). Am I right? Implemented simple FUSE filesystem which only allows reading and writing with small buffers, very often returning that it is written less bytes that in a buffer (using -o direct_io). Some programs work, some not (notably mountlo). Are them buggy or programs should not expect truncated writes and reads from the regular files? In general, are seekable file descriptors expected to truncate data like sockets and pipes?

  • MSI installer not correctly uninstalling a product.

    Hi, I have a situation where a user can install an older version of my software for the 'current user', and then go ahead and upgrade to a newer version of my software for 'all users'. The product itself works fine after this, but the strangeness happens on uninstall. When I try to uninstall the product, the uninstaller shows a couple flashes of progress and then simply dies. It calls none of my custom actions at all (of which i have for install, uninstall, and commit. The product files remain, and I can still launch it. If I try to uninstall again, MSI gives an error saying that the product doesn't exist, but it is still indeed listed on add/remove programs. After this attempted uninstall, the user can work around the problem by uninstalling the 'rest' of the product through add/remove programs (which at this point shows the older version of the product). Any Idea what could cause this?

    I am going to write a mapper and reducer for the kmeans algorithm, I think the best course of action to do is putting the distance calculator in mapper and sending to reducer with the cluster id as key and coordinates of row as value. In reducer, updating the centroids would be performed. I am writing this by python. As you know, I have to use Hadoop streaming to transfer data between STDIN and STOUT. according to my knowledge, when we print (key + "\t"+value), it will be sent to reducer. Reducer will receive data and it calculates the new centroids but when we print new centroids, I think it does not send them to mapper to calculate new clusters and it just send it to STDOUT and as you know, kmeans is a iterative program. So, my questions is whether Hadoop streaming suffers of doing iterative programs and we should employ MRJOB for iterative programs?

  • Open another application from your own (intent)

    I know how to update my own programs, and I know how to open programs using the a predefined Uri (for sms or email for example) I need to know how I can create an Intent to open MyTracks or any other application that I don't know what intents they listen to. I got this info from DDMS, but I havn't been succesful in turning this to an Intent I can use. This is taken from when opening MyTracks manually.   • How can I lock the cursor to the inside of a window on Linux?

    I'm trying to put together a game for Linux which involves a lot of fast action and flinging around of the mouse cursor. If the user wants to play in windowed mode, I'd quite like to lock the cursor to the inside of the window to avoid accidentally changing programs in the heat of battle (obviously this will cancel itself if the user changes programs or hits escape for the pause menu.) On Windows, this can be accomplished easily with ClipCursor(). I can't find an equivalent on Linux. Is there one? I plan to do this in pure X code, but obviously if anyone knows of a way to do this in any Linux windowing library then I can just read the source code and figure out how to duplicate it in X.

  • How do I learn Scheme?

    Hey, I'm a relative newbie to programming. I've picked up some very basic Java (File I/O, GUIs, inheritance) and would like to take a look at functional programming - in particular, I would like to learn Scheme. I'm having some trouble finding a Scheme implementation I can understand. Interpreters are weird; I'm not sure how to save my programs and create executables. I've downloaded PLT Scheme, but I would prefer using something less condescending, something similar to NetBeans. Is there a plugin or tool that will allow me to quickly and easily create and manage Scheme programs? All help is appreciated!

    I used to be visual basic 6 programmer, i was pleased with visual basic : it is high level language that do stuff fast,easy to learn, easy to do stuff in,you can drag and drop stuff to the form and write your code,it is simply amazing.however microsoft buried VB6 and pointed us to VB.NET which is so different that it is not the old VB anymore.I didn't like what microsoft did and would like to look somewhere AWAY from microsoft and from any other proprietary language . I would like to look into a similar language that is easy,cross platform (windows / Linux), object oriented, visual design, non proprietary and compile (for some guarding against reverse engineering). i am freelancer so the choice is entirely mine,i don't care about performance of programs, the time taken to develop a given programs is much more important. desktop / database / GUI /networking programming is what i am looking for. so any such language offered by our open source community ? thank you so much

  • Checking variable from a different class in C#

    Greetings- I have 2 classes. One is called "Programs" and the other is called "Logs". The class called Programs has public const string m_sEnviron = ""; near the top and I need to check what the m_sEnviron variable is set to through my class called Logs. The variable m_sEnviron will get set from a scheduler called Tidal so how can I check its value from a different class.   • SD Card reader not working on Sony Vaio

    This laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-Z31MN/B PCG-6z2m) has been installed with Windows 7 64 bit, all the drivers from Sony's VAIO site are installed, and everything in Device Manager both (a) has a driver and (b) shows as working, no exclamation marks or warnings. "Hide empty drives" in Folder options is disabled so the card reader appears, but will not read the card ("please insert a disk in drive O:"). Previously, when the laptop had Windows XP on it, it could read the same card. Also, Windows update suggested driver ("SD Card Reader") doesn't work, Ricoh own drivers install properly but do the same behaviour. Other 3rd party driver suggestions from forums (Acer and Texas-Instruments FlashMedia) do not seem to install properly. I would post the PCI id if I had it, but it was just showing up as rimsptsk\diskricohmemorystickstorage (while it had the Ricoh Driver installed). Edit: If there are any lower level diagnostic utlities which might shed more light on it I'd welcome hearing of them. Anything which might show get it to put troubleshooting logs in the event log or identify chipsets or whatever...   • Getting PATH right for python after MacPorts install

    I can't import some python libraries (PIL, psycopg2) that I just installed with MacPorts. I looked through these forums, and tried to adjust my PATH variable in $HOME/.bash_profile in order to fix this but it did not work. I added the location of PIL and psycopg2 to PATH. I know that Terminal is a version of python in /usr/local/bin, rather than the one installed by MacPorts at /opt/local/bin. Do I need to use the MacPorts version of Python in order to ensure that PIL and psycopg2 are on sys.path when I use python in Terminal? Should I switch to the MacPorts version of Python, or will that cause more problems?     I am trying to re-install ASP.NET on IIS7 running in Win7/64, which magically stopped working all of as sudden. When I run aspnet_regiis -i, I get an error message that says Finished installing ASP.NET (4.0.30319). Setup has detected some errors during the operation. For details, please read the setup log file C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\ASPNETSetup_00031.log Looking at the log, it reports Failure Changing IIS ApplicationHost.config: IIS7Register failed with HRESULT 800700b7: 'Cannot create a file when that file already exists. ' The real problem surfaces when trying to access an ASP.NET web page from that server: HTTP Error 500.21 - Internal Server Error Handler "PageHandlerFactory-Integrated" has a bad module "ManagedPipelineHandler" in its module list and Most likely causes: Managed handler is used; however, ASP.NET is not installed or is not installed completely. There is a typographical error in the configuration for the handler module list. So it seems ASP.NET has NOT been properly re-installed. Now, I am aware of the alleged one-and-only remedy for this, repeated all over the Web, and referenced for example here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dougste/archive/2010/09/06/errors-installing-asp-net-4-0.aspx Except that the proposed solution does not work for me. I have expanded the %windir% macros within isapiCgiRestriction section for .NET 4.0 - and aspnet_regiis still fails for me. Any other ideas?

  • "0x80004005: Unspecified error" when renaming folders in Windows 7

    Setup I've just installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. The operating system is installed on an 80GB Intel X-25M. I have a secondary 500GB Barracuda 7200.12 to be used for storage. This second drive is mounted as 'G'. Problem I'm getting an error whenever I try to rename a folder within this drive. The error says: An unexpected error is keeping you from renaming the folder. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error Clicking the "Try Again" button gets past the error, and correctly renames the folder. If I create a folder and leave it's name as "New Folder", then I don't see an error. I'm also able to manipulate files however I want without seeing an error. Things I've Tried Changing permissions on the drive Reformatting the drive. I've tried using both a "Basic" and "Dynamic" partition table. Checking the drive for errors using Microsoft tools Things I've Not Yet Tried When I first installed Windows I was given a choice between three types of partitions to use. I no longer remember what the choices were or what I selected. One was a GUID partition table, one was a traditional MBR, and I can't remember the third option.

    Problem I'm trying to run Windows Task Scheduler from the start menu (the command is %SystemRoot%\system32\taskschd.msc /s) but as of very recently, I'm getting an error: ![Task Scheduler service is not available. Verify that the service is running.][1] I made some screenshots but I can't embed them unfortunately because I don't have enough reputation points yet: http://i.imgur.com/7rPXf.png and Mmddy.png and wonnF.png The window then opens as usual except no tasks are displayed and the error "Reading Data Failed" is shown on a few of the panels. ![second screenshot][2] Possible Causes ran rpccfg -a 1 and netsh rpc add 127.0.0.1 changed PC name twice while computer was still loading installed and used DeltaCopy installed Adobe AIR installed Warsow I can't think of any other system changes I've made. Things Tried ran rpccfg with the parameter to reset to defaults ran netsh with the parameter to reset to defaults uninstalled DeltaCopy forced the service to restart. The service and its dependencies appear started and looked normal before and after connecting to "another computer" from inside the program and entering credentials for the current machine. This said access denied yesterday but today it says "Connecting as another user is only supported when connecting to a computer running Windows Vista™ or later." and partially works but doesn't show my tasks. ![third screenshot][3] but I am on Vista! Please help!

    Hello, I have installed Debian 5.04 Lenny on my new Intel D510MO motheboard. I fixed some issues with incorrect drive mapping (for some reason during installation my hdd was on sdb, after a restart it is under sda - fixed in grub), and now I am struggling with getting graphical enviroment up and running, I installed the graphical enviroment using the Debian installer. I am not an linux expert by any means, I assume that I need to edit the xorg.conf file. Any hints appreciated! But I don't know why it keeps reporting the http error 416. I searched in google and found the following description of the error but it doesn't seem to help much. HTTP ERROR 416 - Requested Range Not Satisfiable A 416 status code indicates that the server was unable to fulfill the request. This may be, for example, because the client asked for the 800th-900th bytes of a document, but the document was only 200 bytes long. It suggests me to use the --skip-broken option, I tried and the output is the same. I already tested many times, it just doesn't work when the --security option is used. What could be the possible cause for this problem?
