  • "service"-command and environment variables

    I am trying to start a service that requires a env. variable to be set to certain path. I set this variable in "/etc/profile.d/". However when I start this service using the service command, it doesn't work. man service: service runs a System V init script in as predictable environment as possible, removing most environment variables and with current working directory set to /. So it seems that service is removing my variables. How should I set the variables up to keep them from being removed. Or is that something i should not do. I could start the service manually using the init-scripts, or even hardcode the path into the script, but I'd like to know how to use it with the service command.

  • Script or Utility to convert .nab to .csv without importing double entries in Outlook

    Currently our environment is migrating from Groupwise 7 to Outlook 2003 and we have multiple users with mission critical outside contacts in their frequent contacts that will have to be imported in Outlook. Currently our only solution is to export GW contacts to a .nab, import to excel to scrub out the contacts in our own domain (to avoid double entry) and convert to .csv. This current solution will require a lot of man hours for hand holding because most of our users are not technically savvy AT ALL and are frankly too busy to do this themselves. Anyone know of any kind of tool or script to assist with this?

  • Cannot access boot menu with compaq 8510p

    I have a problem with my HP compaq 8510p laptop: when I start it, the fan starts and the power light is on, but the screen displays nothing. When I insert a bootable hard drive, it activates the hard drive light (meaning that the CD is recognized) but it stops after a few seconds. Same thing with any hard drive: the drive is recognized but does not boot. What I've tried so far: Changing the hard drive or booting with no hard drive (same problem) Plugging anoher display via VGA : no display on the other screen Inserting a windows-7 CD (same problem) Booting only on battery, with battery and power cable, only with power cable (same problem) So it looks like something is preventing the laptop from booting and displaying the boot menu. Do you have experienced something similar with a laptop ? What could be wrong ? The laptop is out of warranty. The system used to be windows-7 x64. Edit: I went to the help desk of my university. A guy took a look (he also tried to plug an external screen) and said that the computer is dead: on the HP laptops eventually the GPU card dies and so does the motherboard because they are linked. He saw this many times, and even if I can fix the problem, the laptop would crash again after a while. Do you have similar experience with HP laptops ? (mine is 4 years old) Edit 2: Believe it or not, my laptop is magically working again. I have no clue about what is going on. Now it is like starting and old car: when you turn it on you secretly hope it will actually start... With that said, I expect my laptop to break again in the near future (its an HP after all) and I will accept an answer or add my own accordingly. Edit 3: As expected, the laptop is down again. This time, sometimes when I power it up, it shuts down automatically after 3 seconds, sometimes not at all. In addition, when it does not shut down on its own, the power button does not work : the only way to shut it down is by unplugging the battery. As before, the screen is black, and only the power and battery lights are on. (the other ones: hard drive and wifi are off). I have tried to plug in another power plug, removing the battery and removing the hard drive without success. I might buy another laptop. I've brought the laptop to a repair shop. The problem is indeed that the graphic card is down. It will be replaced by a new one.

  • Sleep uses more power than I expect

    When my new Dell laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium and 4GB RAM sleeps (not when it hibernates), it will drain the battery overnight. My old Dell laptop with XP Pro (2 GB RAM) could sleep for days without running out of battery. Is it normal that Windows 7 sleep is this power-hungry or should I troubleshoot my new machine? Edit: I know how to set the different sleep/hibernate settings. That is not what I'm asking.

  • Deleted exchange account still being auto suggested

    I set up a new hire in our domain in exchange. When he arrived yesterday I discovered his name had been mispelled. I deleted his account and created a new account with proper spelling. The problem now is his old email address is being being suggested whenever anyone types in his first name. Users email the bad address get a bounce and create more help desk tickets. Is there a way to update exchange or purge the bad account?

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 bare metal restore to different hardware

    Scenario: I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 installation whose main disk drive is now 7 years old and showing signs of age. For the last couple of months it's been displaying increased errors and requirements to run checkdisk. I have successfully created a bare metal restore (BMR) image on a separate data drive on the server, which can be seen from the Windows Recovery console; I tested it by booting to and using the Windows Server installation DVD's recovery utilities. The BMR image includes the system drive with boot partition, system state, and the D:\ drive of the server, which is where I have followed the practice of installing any program that does not require a C:\ installation path. Therefore, the BMR includes both the C:\ and D:\ drives, system state and boot partition. The C:\ drive is a 7-year old Seagate 160GB. The D:\ drive is a rather newer 120GB Western Digital. I have purchased a 128GB solid state Samsung 830 that I want to restore these partitions to, using the BMR. Questions: In the above-referenced article, Microsoft seems to be indicating that I am only able to restore to like-kind hardware, which doesn't help at all and is difficult to believe. Is this really true? I've cleaned these drives up and minimized the size of partition they require. C:\ will need about a 70GB partition, and the data on D:\ will need about 50GB. Will Windows Server backup allow me to restore the BMR to newly-created partitions on the SSD, discarding extra space? I don't need a "how-to": I just need an "is it possible".   • Passwords longer than 8 letter in Red Hat 4

    I have some machines with RHEL4 Nahant Update 6. Oddly, I found that passwords longer than 8 digits are not stored. So if I had a password 1ABCDEa!, and I changed it to 1ABCDEa!1ABCDEa! I could still log in to the machine with the old password. This machines use NIS authentication, but other machines with Red Hat 5 which use the same NIS server allow login ONLY with the NEW password (16 digits long...)!

  • Remove DRM From a WMV file I own

    Alright, first, let me explain. I purchased some content through Microsoft's Zune/Xbox Video service, and man that was a mistake. After trying several times to get the video to play, I received an error along the lines of "out of licenses." Lucky for me, I was able to recover the file I was looking for off of a backup, but now I'm having problems playing it. It works fine in Windows Media Player, but not in Zune or Xbox Video (on Windows 8). I contacted Zune's customer support, and of course they couldn't help me. So, I legally own the content, I just want to be able to play it where I want to play it. It's ridiculous that I can't. I know there are ways to do this out there, I just can't figure it out (I keep getting directed to this piece of junk thing called Almedia, which kind of seems to work, but was only putting out audio in the demo version).     The old advice to set the REG_DWORD value named RPEnabled (some sources claim it's RPEnable) under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer to 0 doesn't work anymore since the Consumer Preview (i.e. now also for the Release Preview). Yes, I tried both RPEnabled and RPEnable. How can I log into the system and be presented the desktop instead of the metro start screen? I got rid of the lock screen already, so this is the missing piece in the puzzle of making Windows 8 Release Preview usable.

  • How do I use XQuartz with ssh on OS X?

    I've downloaded the latest stable version of XQuartz on my Snow Leopard machine, and I'm trying to make an ssh connection with X forwarding but X11 keeps opening. How can I get OS X to use XQuartz? I had X11 installed I downloaded and installed XQuartz X11 is not open / running XQuartz is open and running I try and connect to a remote system using iTerm2: ssh user@remote -X X11 opens. XQuartz is still open, but I doubt it is doing anything. I also tried moving X11 to the trash but then the ssh connection will not complete, even though XQuartz is open. I also get the two warnings which I don't understand how to fix, even after reading the ssh man page. Warning: untrusted X11 forwarding setup failed: xauth key data not generated Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.

This is free software with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY. Obviously this is either not true or I'm missing something. Googling hasn't brought up any new insights (besides that 'BC' can also stand for 'British Columbia'). Do you see my error? Better yet, do you know any good references/tutorials to bc?

    I recently got a brand new computer. Everything was fine until I plugged my electric guitar into my amp. When I switch on my guitar amp (guitar speaker) I can hear a weird noise. It sounds like the noise that that goes through your speakers when you put your mobile phone next to it. There is nothing wrong with my guitar or guitar amp and I didn't have any similar problems with my old computer. Can anyone help me?

The reason is I'm trying to clean up some old stored procs and tables, some of which can be removed, some of which can have columns pruned. The question is as browsers just accept and load the forwarded/new page(when the request for http://foo.bar - https://foo.bar), does the google bot(or other search engines) accept the forwarded page and index the new page and just ignore the old page? in other word, does search engines accept https beside the http? thanks in advance.

Also, also aren't SSDs much more immune to these types of failures? Everything seems to be working fine now, but I'm fearful of a looming failure.

    In my ~ dir, I have some symlinks that point to "/Volumes/Macintosh HD 2/..." and I want to find them all recursively. A look at the man page for 'find' says the '-lname' argument will search the symbolic link contents. It appears to work, but not recursively: $ pwd /Users/myusername $ sudo find . -lname '/Volumes*' $ cd Documents/ $ sudo find . -lname '/Volumes*' ./Documents on Win7 ./work.rtf What's going on? How can I make this work recursively? -- The 'find' program is supposed to always work recursively.
