  • Why Are Ruby Programmers So Full of Themselves? [closed]

    I've noticed this culture surrounding Ruby where developers truly believe that they are somehow more gifted than developers of other languages, regardless of experience and talent (even when that isn't the case, I've met some extremely junior Ruby developers come up with some pretty basic constructs, and pass them off as some sort of revolutionary idea). The derision of strongly typed languages seems to be a common theme as well; regardless of its merits. Is there something particular to the Ruby syntax in general that is to account for this? Is there a socialogical component to it?

  • Multiple arrangements/asserts per unit test?

    A group of us (.NET developers) are talking unit testing. Not any one framework (we've hit on MSpec, NUint, MSTest, RhinoMocks, TypeMock, etc) -- we're just talking generally. We see lots of syntax that forces a distinct unit test per scenario, but we don't see an avenue to re-using one unit test with various inputs or scenarios. Also, we don't see an avenue to multiple asserts in a given test without an early assert's failure threatening the testing of later asserts (in the same test). Is there anything like that happening in .NET unit testing (state- or behavior-based) today?

    I cant seem to find a way to make django-dajaxice have its callback inside same scoped object from which made the initial call. MyViewport = Ext.extend(MyViewportUi, { initComponent: function() { MyViewport.superclass.initComponent.call(this); }, LoadRecordsCallback: function(data){ if(data!='DAJAXICE_EXCEPTION') { alert(data); } else { alert('DAJAXICE_EXCEPTION'); } }, LoadRecords: function(){ Dajaxice.Console.GetUserRecords(this.LoadRecordsCallback); } }); var blah = new MyViewport(); blah.LoadRecords(); I'm on django, and like the calling syntax to django-dajaxice. I'm using Extjs 3.2 and tried passing a Ext.createCallback but Dajax's returning eval seems to only want a string for the callback.

    Is there any way to evaluate a string expression in XSL? example: <myItem id="1"> <validator expression="$someVariable = '3'" /> </myItem> ... <xsl:variable name="someVariable" select="3" /> <xsl:if test="@expression"> ... I realize this syntax does not work the way I want it to, but is there any way to store the test expression in a variable and then evaluate the expression?

    Where can I find documentation for Qt documentation comments? I'm referring to how Qt uses a specific style for documentation comments, like so: /*! \class MyClassName \brief The MyClassName class is used as an example on Stack Overflow. This class serves a few functions, the most important being: \list \i So people can understand my question. \i So people can have a few laughs at the comedy in my example. \endlist */ ...you get the picture. So where can I find information about all the switches, like \class, \list, \brief, etc. Also, what tool(s) do I use to generate documentation files from these comments in my source files? Does Doxygen support this syntax?

  • [WordPress] Need help with remove_action()

    I'm trying to remove the unsightly embedded <STYLE> tag the built-in Recent Comments widget puts in my <HEAD>, but I can't seem to get the syntax right. It originally calls add_action( 'wp_head', array(&$this, 'recent_comments_style') ); to add it (in wp-includes/default-widgets.php, line 609), and I'm trying to undo it. I think it should be something like this: remove_action('wp_head', 'WP_Widget_Recent_Comments::recent_comments_style'); but with all the variations I've tried I still can't get it right.     Since i'm working with Titanium i realzed that its current JavaScript Interpreter doesn't accept specific coding-styles. So for for-loops and if-statements i have to have braces, even though i only want to span one line. Furthermore there is more i have to change if i want to use a Javascript Library like underscore.js.   • How do I define the default background color for window instances in a shared ResourceDictionary?

    I can't seem to set a default background color for all of my windows in my application. Does anyone know how to do this? Currently I'm setting a theme in my App.xaml file like this. <Application> <Application.Resources> <ResourceDictionary Source="Themes/SomeTheme.xaml" /> This basically styles my entire application. Inside of SomeTheme.xaml I am trying to set a default color for all of my windows like this. <Style TargetType="{x:Type Window}"> <Setter Property="Background" Value="{DynamicResource MainColor}" /> </Style> This syntax works on a type of Button, but is completely ignored for Window. What am I doing wrong? Is there something special I have to do for a Window type.

    In my database I have three tables: Users: UserID (Auto Numbering), UserName, UserPassword and a few other unimportant fields. PrivateMessages: MessageID (Auto Numbering), SenderID and a few other fields defining the message content. MessageStatus: MessageID, ReceiverID, MessageWasRead (Boolean) What I need is a query to which I input a user's id and I get all the private messages he has received. In addition, I also need to receive each message's sender UserName. For this I wrote the following query: SELECT Users.*, PrivateMessages.*, MessageStatus.* FROM PrivateMessages INNER JOIN Users ON PrivateMessages.SenderID = Users.UserID INNER JOIN MessageStatus ON PrivateMessages.MessageID = MessageStatus.MessageID WHERE MessageStatus.ReceiverID=[@userid]; But for some reason when I try saving it in my Access database, I get the following error (translated to English by me, since my office is in a different language): Syntax error (missing operator) at expression: "PrivateMessages.SenderID = Users.UserID INNER JOIN MessageStatus ON PrivateMessages.MessageID = MessageStatus.MessageI". Any ideas what could cause this? Thanks.

I am looking for: Tags User accounts (I want to be able to see all of my snippets on a single page) syntax highlighting versioning - myself or others should be able to edit my snippets to improve them\ straightforward UI with minimal advertising if any Does anyone know of a solution which meets these requirements? If not, would anyone be interested in something like this? As a software engineer, after step zero (does it already exist), I'm perfectly willing to go onto step 1 (would other people use it?     I'm having an issue with my PHP code trying to create events within MySQL. I begin with creating a string like this: $sql="DELIMITER $$ CREATE EVENT `$test_name` ON SCHEDULE EVERY $time1 $sched2 STARTS '$start_date $start_time' DO BEGIN "; $sql .="INSERT INTO blah (foo,bar); "; $sql .="END$$ DELIMITER ;" mysql_query($sql,$dbh); But I keep getting Syntax Errors starting with DELIMITER $$ CREATE EVENT. Without the semicolon behind (foo,bar); the event triggers with a unexecuted payload. Any ideas on where I'm going wrong? Thanks!

  • Is a full list returned first and then filtered when using linq to sql to filter data from a databas

    This is probably a very simple question that I am working through in an MVC project. Here's an example of what I am talking about. I have an rdml file linked to a database with a table called Users that has 500,000 rows. But I only want to find the Users who were entered on 5/7/2010. So let's say I do this in my UserRepository: from u in db.GetUsers() where u.CreatedDate = "5/7/2010" select u (doing this from memory so don't kill me if my syntax is a little off, it's the concept I am looking for) Does this statement first return all 500,000 rows and then filter it or does it only bring back the filtered list?

    Hi guys, I haven't coded in C++ in ages. And recently, I'm trying to work on something involving structs. Like this typedef struct{ int x; int y; } Point; Then in a loop, I'm trying to create new structs and put pointers to them them in a list. Point* p; int i, j; while (condition){ // compute values for i and j with some function... p = new Point; p* = {i, j}; //initialize my struct. list.append(p); //append this pointer to my list. } Now, my question is it possible to simplify this? I mean, the pointer variable *p outside of the loop and calling p = new Point inside the loop. Isn't there a better/nicer syntax for this?

    I am using Python scripts to edit the table of many shape files. The following script runs fine, but if there are any " marks in the SIT_FULL_S field, the script errors and shuts down. gp.CalculateField_management(fc + "\\Parcels.shp","SIT_FULL_S", "!SIT_FULL_S!.lstrip('0')", "PYTHON") arcgisscripting.ExecuteError: ERROR 000539: Error running expression: "9030 W SR 2 HWY "A"".lstrip('0') <type 'exceptions.SyntaxError'>: invalid syntax (<string>, line 1) Failed to execute (CalculateField). I have two options, create a new script that runs through and deletes all occurances of ", and then run the above script or modify the above script to ignore the " and contiue running. Can anyone help ?

    I have found Design patterns certification at the Brainbehch. I have heard from people who passed it, that there are many Language-specific patterns questions, mostly from Java and C++. I think that this certification can: force me to improve my skills on Object oriented design and design patterns; improve and structure my knowledge of the domain; give real estimate of my knowledge, which is useful issue itself The only confusion I have about this certification, is that I have to learn C++/Java language specific design patterns, while I mostly do PHP development and don't want to switch to C++/Java. I'm familiar with Java & C++ syntax, read lots of books about different subjects with code snippets in this programming languages. I think, that if I pass well all concepts except language specific patterns at certification, it won't be very good, because this concepts will gain quite low results. What would you recommend in this particular circumstance?

My google foo is weak I guess, I cannot find much on Entry sets other than the java doc itself. Is is just a temporary copy of the map? And I cannot find any info at all on the syntax: Entry<?, ?> Can anyone explain or point me toward an explanation of what is going on with those question marks? Thanks in advanced.

    Calling toString() on the function below returns different strings across browsers. I understand this is because ECMA-262 15.3.4.2 leaves wiggle room for each vendor. Chrome returns the comments in addition to all syntax. Sadly Firefox 3.6 omits the comments. Based on Firefox's behavior I haven't tested IE, Opera, or Safari. function foo() { /* comment */ var bar = true; } Specifically, I am attempting to embed meta data within a specially formatted comment block within a function. Later the return value of the functions toString() method would be parsed and values returned as an object. I've been unable to locate compatibility tables or alternatives to toString(). Does the community have any ideas? Btw, pre-processing JS files isn't an option. :( Thanks a lot. :)

You can do this using the svcutil.exe tool from the command line with the following syntax: svcutil.exe http://internalservername.domain/clientname/happy.svc?wsdl I tried to add the host/baseaddress tag, but make no difference, what I missed? thanks for help.

  • Can Spring understand @Inject replacing Weld as a JSR-299 implementation?

    I have noticed from several web pages that apparently Spring 3.0 supports @Inject from JSR-330. As we would really like to use JSR-299 syntax for dependency injection in our libraries for both web apps and stand-alone applications, and have alternatives to Weld, it would be nice if Spring could do this. Being a novice to Spring, I tried downloading the Spring Framework distribution and put all jars on the Eclipse build path. No Inject annotation so my existing test project using Weld did not compile. Can this be done with Spring? What do I need to do to get it running? (I am aware that Guice eventually will support this too. It is only in SVN for now, and if there is an official Spring release which can, that would be better.)

  • Can a rake task know about the other tasks in the invocation chain?

    Rake (like make) is able to have many targets/tasks specified on invocation. Is it possible for a rake task to access the list of tasks the user invoked, in order to do its job? Scenario: Consider a Rake-based build tool. A help task would like to know what tasks were also specified in order to print their usage and halt the build process. The benefit of this as opposed to rake-style parameter passing are cleaner syntax (rake help build instead of rake help task=build) and chaining (rake help build run_tests would print usage for both).

    I'm battling with this assignment :) I've got two classes: Ocean and Grid. When I declare an object of the Grid inside the Ocean: unsigned int sharkCount; Grid grid; The compiler/complainer says: error C2146: syntax error : missing ';' before identifier 'grid' Can you possibly predict what produces this error with the limited info' I provided? It seems that as if the Ocean doesn't like the Grid class. Could this be because of the poor implementation of the grid class. BTW the Grid has a default constructor. Yet the error happens in compiling time!. Thanks. EDIT: They're each in separate header file, and I've included the Grid.h in the Ocean.h.
