• SQL SERVER – A Cool Trick – Restoring the Default SQL Server Management Studio – SSMS

  “I do not know where my windows went!” “I just closed my object explorer and now I cannot find it.” “How do I get my original windows layout back in SQL Server Management Studio?” “How do I get the window which was there in left side back again?” Since last 2-3 years, every single day I receive more than 5 emails on SSMS and its layout. For the beginners it is very common to get confused when they attempt to change SQL Server Management Studio’s windows layout. They often change the layout and are not able to get the original layout back. Often people do not change the layout whole of their life, leading to uncomfortable feeling when they go to another’s computer where the windows are differently placed. Today’s blog post is dedicated all the beginners in SQL Server. It is extremely simple to reset the SSMS layout to default layout. The default layout involves 2 major things 1) Object Explorer on left side 2) Query Windows on right side (80% screen estate). Personally I am so used to this as well that if there is any other changes in the same, I do not enjoy working on the environment. Well, the solution to rest the SSMS layout is very simple. One can do it in split seconds.  To restore the default configuration, on the Window menu, click Reset Window Layout. Have you ever used this feature? • Lenovo ThinkPad L520 slows down when AC power adapter is plugged in

  I have a new laptop Lenovo ThinkPad L520 (7859-5BG) Core i5-2520M(2.5GHz) with 4GB RAM. Having installed Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit, while browsing with Chrome on GNOME classic (no effects), I noticed 173% CPU usage by chrome browser process, and the system slowly got very very slow, Now, at this stage as I removed the power adapter, the system suddenly got faster (and stopped the lagging behavior) and CPU usage drops down to 48% !! Observation 1: I was browsing through chrome when my system seemed to be seriously lagging, so I killed chrome to see if it gets any faster. But there remained no difference. Notice that CPU usage was a bit strange here. It showed no high activity, but as soon as I would click on applications in gnome panel, it would shoot CPU usage to 70, or 80 or 90 or 143% etc. depending on how quickly i clicked back and forth. At this instance I removed by AC adapter of my laptop, and suddenly system got fine. So i again clicked on gnome panel, and noticed that it now took only 7% or 12% or 13% at max, with same kind of clicks in application menu. Observation 2: At the other times, with AC adapter plugged in, top indicates four instances of chromium taking 90%, 60%, 47% and 2% (for example), and then once I take out the AC adapter same processes take lesser CPU all of a sudden Intermediate conclusions: What does this indicate ? I cannot figure out any "other" process in "top" that is suddenly being triggered, its the same process that hogs up my CPU once AC power is plugged in ! NOTE: the problem is now CONFIRMED, as i can repeat that when I have power adapter plugged in ! Can anyone tell me what exactly does this indicate ? What is wrong, is it some bug with power management or what ?

• Sql Server Prevent Saving Changes That Require Table to be Re-created

  When working with SQL Server Management studio, if you use the Design view of a table and attempt to make a change that will require the table to be dropped and re-added, you may receive an error message like this one: Saving changes is not permitted.  The changes you have made require the following tables to be dropped and re-created.  You have either made changes to a table that cant be re-created or enabled the option Prevent saving changes that require the table to be re-created. In truth, its quite likely that you didnt enable such an option, despite the error dialogs accusations, as it is enabled by default when you install SQL Management Studio.  You can learn more about the issue in the KB article, Error message when you try to save a table in SQL Server 2008: Saving changes is not permitted. Warning: As the above article states, it is not recommended that you turn off this option (at least not permanently), as it will ensure that you do not accidentally change the schema of a table such that data is lost.  Do so at your peril. The simplest way to bypass this error is to go into Option Designers and uncheck the option Prevent saving changes that require table re-creation.  See the screenshot below. The main reason why you will see this error is if you attempted to do any of the following to the table whose design you are saving: Change the Allow Nulls setting for a column Reorder columns Change any columns data type Add a new column The recommended workaround is to script out the changes to a SQL file and execute them by hand, or to simply write out your own T-SQL to make the changes.   We have just migrated our systems from Windows to Ubuntu. We have more than 50 systems previously running Windows XP & Windows 7. After the release of 12.04 we decided to switch to Ubuntu. While we were installing Ubuntu 12.04 on Pentium 4 systems we have faced some issues. We tried it with a USB flash driver & CD. The typical configuration of the system is as follows: Pentium 4 with HT & 512 MB RAM, 40/80 GB IDE / SATA HDD. In windows there were several partitions and data on all the drives in all the systems. We have addressed this by taking backup of the C: drive on other drives & while installing Ubuntu we have just deleted & the C drive & recreated Linux partitions as follows - /root , /Boot, /Home & Swap.(in 10 GB) The problem is that the Linux gets installed without any error. However when I restart the system after the installation the system hangs in while detecting the HDD in BIOS and the system fails to start until I remove the HDD. When I installed the previous Ubuntu version it worked fine, without any hassle. Also if we install Ubuntu 12.04 on same HDD on any other higher capacity system & reconnected to old system it works fine. How can I fix this problem? Also, is there is any Antivirus which will give me real time protection on ubuntu 11 & higher versions with both 32 & 64 Bits?

• When is meta description still relevant?

  I received this bit of advice about the meta description tag recently: Meta descriptions are used by Google probably 80% of the time for the snippet. They don’t help with rankings but you should probably use them. You could just auto generate them from the first part of the question. The description tag exists in the header, like so: <meta name="Description" content="A brief summary of the content on the page."> I'm not sure why we would need this field, as Google seems perfectly capable of showing the relevant search terms in context in the search result pages, like so (I searched for c# list performance): In other words, where would a meta description summary improve these results? We want the page to show context around the actual search hits, not a random summary we inserted! Google Webmaster Central has this advice: For some sites, like news media sources, generating an accurate and unique description for each page is easy: since each article is hand-written, it takes minimal effort to also add a one-sentence description. For larger database-driven sites, like product aggregators, hand-written descriptions are more difficult. In the latter case, though, programmatic generation of the descriptions can be appropriate and is encouraged -- just make sure that your descriptions are not "spammy." Good descriptions are human-readable and diverse, as we talked about in the first point above. The page-specific data we mentioned in the second point is a good candidate for programmatic generation. I'm struggling to think of any scenario when I would want the Google-generated summary, that is, actual context from the page for the search terms, to be replaced by a hard-coded meta description summary of the question itself.

• Bizarre image loading problem from apache2

  Users have complained a few times about seeing a bizarre set of pink or green stripes on our webpage. At first I thought there were a rash of video card outages, but then someone sent me a screenshot from their browser (IE8). I later saw the same thing, but with slightly different colors on Chrome. Users have experienced this on their iPads and iPhones (iOS Safari). Because I've optimized the site to cache images, the bad image stays around until you clear your cache, so once you do, it resolves itself. My assumption is that the transmission of the image is being cut off mid-stream and then staying that way, but I can't for the life of me figure out why. • Is this kind of Design by Contract useless?

  I've just started informatics university and I'm attending a programming course about C(++). The programming professor prefers to teach very few things (in 3 month we have just reached the functions topic) and connect every topic with a type of programming design that somehow is similar to the Design by Contract design. Basically what he ask us to do is to write every exercise with comments Pre-conditions, Post-conditions and Invariants that should prove the correctness of each program we write. But this doesn't make any sense to me. I mean, ok: maybe writing down your thoughts prevent you from doing some mistakes, but if this is all an abstract thing, then if your program intuition is wrong you'll write your program wrong and then you'll also write pre and post conditions wrong probably auto convincing your self about its correctness. Most of the time, both me and other students have written programs that seemed ok and that had correct pre and post condition too. But at the moment of testing it was just completely wrong. I had some experience before this course of programming and I had written a lot of line of code before and I found myself comfortably with just writing a program and unit test it. It take less time to accomplish and is less "abstract" than just thinking about what every single piece of your program should do in every case (which is kinda like mentally testing it). Finally, all this pre and post conditions takes me like 80% of the total time of the exercise. It's harder to think about putting down this pre and post correct than to write the program itself. Since we are like the only course of the only university probably in the entire world that makes this things, could someone please tell me how should I manage this thing? Am I right thinking that this doesn't worth anything? Should I change university? (there are like double of the people attending that course and it seems that usually very few people passes the exam the first year). Should I convince myself it's method is right?

• Getting Internal Name of a Share Point List Fields

  Over the last 2 weeks i was developing a tool to migrate Lotus notes data base to Share point. The mapping between Lotus notes schema and share point list schema was done manually in an xml file for out tool. To map the columns we wanted internal names of each field. There are quite a few ways to achieve this, have explained few below. If you want internal names for one or 2 columns you can do so by navigating to the list setting and clicking on the column name. Once you are in column's details, you can check the query string of the page. The last item in the query string would be field's internal. Replace all "%5f" with '_' will give you the field internal name. In my case there were more than 80 columns. I used power shell to get the list of columns with details. Open windows Powershell and paste the following script after modifying the url and list name. Now, I could easily rename the folder and get it sorted, but I would like to understand what's going on here. What would be the correct way to configure Apache in a way that it wont behave this way, and instead would listen to the Rewrite Rule? • Some fun with RadGridView for Silverlight literally !

  April Fools' Day is a great excuse for me to do something funny with RadGridView. So todays post will have less geekness and more fun than usually.   Silverlight being a great platform and RadGridView being enormously flexible control provoked me to do something that you can not exactly call the typical Line-Off-Business application.   So enjoy this small  Pexeso game clone created with the help of RadGridView for Silverlight and some standard Silverlight re-styling techniques. The rules are simple : Try to open two identical cards at the same time. The goal of the game try to open all cards this way.   Whatever bugs you My wife and I used to take some of our summer vacation I a cabin on the shore of Lake Atsion in NJ. I t is a delightful place in the Wharton forest with Brown yet fresh water, where we would canoe, swim and enjoy true rest. Alas, in the last few years, yellow flies also discovered the area’s pastoral delights and came in hoards to bug us. So much so that we had to give up. As a computer programmer I abhor bugs. The bugs that bug me – except the pesky yellow flies – are program bugs , a specific variety of computer bugs. Unlike their IBM brethren, the Burroughs used a 96 column card. The cards were much smaller than the 80 column IBM cards. We wrote our programs on coding sheets and then a key-punch operator transcribed them into punched cards. These were fed into a card reader and compiled. The compiler would notify us of compiler errors or bugs, but it was not always easy to get the meaning of the message. My friend Mark Wildt, also a Burroughs veteran, gave me an old punched card from one of his programs. Obviously a bug!! Here It Is!! That’s All Folks!

  Last week's article, Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 1), was the first in a multi-part article series exploring how to add store locator-type functionality to your ASP.NET website using the free Google Maps API. Part 1 started with an examination of the database used to power the store locator, which contains a single table named Stores with columns capturing the store number, its address and its latitude and longitude coordinates. Next, we looked at using Google Maps API's geocoding service to translate a user-entered address, such as San Diego, CA or 92101 into its latitude and longitude coordinates. Knowing the coordinates of the address entered by the user, we then looked at writing a SQL query to return those stores within (roughly) 15 miles of the user-entered address. These nearby stores were then displayed in a grid, listing the store number, the distance from the address entered to each store, and the store's address. While a list of nearby stores and their distances certainly qualifies as a store locator, most store locators also include a map showing the area searched, with markers denoting the store locations. This article looks at how to use the Google Maps API, a sprinkle of JavaScript, and a pinch of server-side code to add such functionality to our store locator. Read on to learn more! • Great Indian Developer Summit Wrap-Up

  Last week I spoke at the Great Indian Developer Summit in Bangalore, India. This was my second year speaking at GIDS, so it was great to be back. Before the event Teleriks Team Fantastic Four set up the booth and then hit McDonalds for a Maharaja Mac. Remember India does not eat beef, so we HAD to go to McDonalds and check it out! Imagine a McDonalds without a hamburger. Totally awesome. (Though we all preferred the McAloo, a potato patty sandwich.) The event is really 4 conferences in 4 days. • Unity calendar lens not showing events

  I'm trying to get proper/useful calendar integration into Ubuntu 12.04. I have a Google Calendar (& account) and I want to be able to use this without opening the browser. I want to get the Unity Calendar lens working, so that it shows events coming up, and it allows me a quick way to add new events. However, after installing it, it does not find any events, nor allow me to add a new event. Note that I've installed Lightning 1.4, Evolution mirror 0.2.3, Evolution, and unity-calendar lens. I've also installed Calendar-indicator. I suspect that somehow the lens is not getting the calendar information from thunderbird via evolution. A bit of searching around led me to try this command: /usr/lib/calendar-lens/calendar-lens-daemon.py. • DIY Homemade Hybrid Rocket Engine [Video]

  Remember the guy with the cool DIY astronaut ice cream build? He’s back with a mini hybrid rocket engine that runs off oxygen and acrylic. I built a small rocket engine for demonstration purposes. The engine is built from a 2″ diameter acrylic rod through which I drilled a 0.5″ hole. The oxygen at 80 psi or less is passed through the hole and then is forced through a convergent-divergent nozzle at the tail end. The nozzle’s throat is about 0.25″ and expands to 0.625″. I lit the engine by inserting a burning cotton swab (with wooden stick) while a small amount of oxygen was flowing. The acrylic catches fire very easily in a pure oxygen environment. The engine can be throttled and shut off completely, which is a major benefit to hybrid engine designs. Solid-fuel rockets cannot be throttled or shut off, which makes them difficult to control. • Configuring Transmission for faster download

  I have tested on the same PC with the same torrent/magnet links the following Torrent Clients: Transmission Ktorrent Deluge qBittorrent Vuze After 7 days of testing I noticed that the only one that took longer to start downloading and to keep an optimum/max download speed was Transmission. It was the slowest of them all to download the same torrents or magnet links which I tested 8 torrents and 4 magnet links from different sites and the one that took the most to start downloading or start after a pause/resume event. The other 4 just took less than 2 seconds for example to start downloading and to download the same content between 50% less time to 80% less time. I think that Transmission has the same capabilities about downloading/resuming than the other torrent clients but it may be because of some configuration I need to do to get the same speed and effect than the others. In my tests all torrent clients were tested with their default configurations. No changes were made. They were tested on the same PC, with the same network connection in the same time periods. So I am thinking that Transmission just needs a little bit of configuration tunning. I also set the ports for use to the same one for each. Checked the router for any blocking and anything related to the network. What options can I change to make it so Transmission resumes a download faster (grabs the seeds faster) and keeps a fast download all the time (Stays with the seeds that offer the best connection for example). Both of which by the look of it are features that the rest of the torrent clients do already.
