• Opening MS Excel worksheet in C#

  I know we can open a particular worksheet of MS Excel using C# by providing the sheet number (1,2,3..) or name (sheet1, sheet2, sheet3...) I have a excel file which has 2 sheets, 1. Values, 2. Results Is there a way to open a sheet giving the sheet name ,i.e, "Values" instead of 1 or [s|S]heet1 in C# ?? I looked thru the old posts but didnt find anything useful... so again, what I am trying to do is, open a Excel worksheet by using its user defined name (Values) instead of the system defined name(1 or [s|S]heet1) any inputs would be greatly appreciated!

• How to partially update views in an app widget without rebuilding all the RemoteViews

  I'm implementing an app widget and I'd like to be able to change the property of a single view in the widget layout, without rebuilding all the RemoteViews from scratch, which involves loading XML etc and which is not necessary in some circumstances.. Is there a way to say "update property X on view identified by a specific ID in the current widget layout"? I've seen that there is a partiallyUpdateAppWidget method in the AppWidgetManager class but I can't understand nor if it is meant for this purpose neither how it must be used.. Can you help me or point me to a useful link or example?

• Is there a .def file equivalent on Linux for controlling exported function names in a shared library

  I am building a shared library on Ubuntu 9.10. I want to export only a subset of my functions from the library. On the Windows platform, this would be done using a module definition (.def) file which would contain a list of the external and internal names of the functions exported from the library. I have the following questions: How can I restrict the exported functions of a shared library to those I want (i.e. a .def file equivalent) Using .def files as an example, you can give a function an external name that is different from its internal name (useful for prevent name collisions and also redecorating mangled names etc) On windows I can use the EXPORT command (IIRC) to check the list of exported functions and addresses, what is the equivalent way to do this on Linux?

• Configuring IoC container from modules/plug-ins ?

  Hi guys, i am in big dilema.. I am working on highly modular web app in ASP.NET MVC 2 (in fact, core will be super lightweight, all work on modules/plugins). I found MEF pretty useful for modules discovery, but i dont want to us it as IoC container. There is pretty good chance that I will need advanced features of "true" IoC container, so I would like to use Unity. And here is the problem : how to allow modules to configure container (programatically) = register their own types (mvc controllers, custom implementations of services...) at application start without making hard dependency on Unity in all modules ? I know about Common Service Locator project, and it seems pretty good, but this interface co container only allows resolving types, not registering them (afaik). I really hope you can understand my point, I know my english is terrible (I am from non english speaking country :) Thanks a lot !

  I'm currently working on a project for a web application that may be installed on several different servers with various software configurations. I want to make my application as flexible as possible by allowing the user to have various SQL servers installed. The problem is the SQL syntax used by any two server vendors does not match up. For a simple example, here is the same SELECT statement for MS SQL and MySQL: MS SQL - SELECT TOP 1 * FROM MyTable ORDER BY DateCreated DESC MySQL - SELECT * FROM MyTable ORDER BY DateCreated DESC LIMIT 1 Are there any standard way to abstract the statement creation for various vendors? • Building a Monopoly Board with GridBagLayout

  I have been building a Java version of Monopoly in my spare time and am having some trouble understanding layouts etc for Swing. Each one of my spaces on the board is a essentially a custom JButton and I have been trying to lay them around the edge of a frame (like on the monopoly board itself). I can't seem to find a useful explanation of how the layout system works and so am having trouble do so. Could someone please give me an example of how they would lay the buttons around the edge of the frame? Should I be using a different layout?

  Ok so I am starting off with android development and I have found a bunch of useful tutorials so I am set there. What I am looking for is a resource that provides homework style problems to do and has the answers downloadable so I can check my solution against the "official" solution. So for example instead of the notepad tutorial it would be: "Build an application that you can create, edit, delete notes, ...etc.". Ideally the "official" solution would have some explanation as to why they built it the way they did. (so a tutorial at the tail end) Anyone know of any resources that provide their tutorials in this format? Thanks.

  Somewhere some guy said (I honestly do not know where I got this from), that one should learn one programming language per year. I can see where that might be a good idea, because you learn new patterns and ways to look at the same problems by solving them in different languages. Typically, when learning a new language, I look at how certain problems are supposed to be solved in that language. My question now is, what, in you experience, are good, simple, and clearly defined tasks that demostrate the differences between programming languages. The Idea here is to have a set of tasks, that, when I solve all of them in the language I am learning, gives me a good overview of how things are supposed to be done in that language. I do not know if that is even possible, but it sure would be a useful thing to have. A typical example one often sees especially in tutorials for functional languages is the implementation of quicksort.

• Link objects as fields in UML diagram

  I'm trying to generate a diagram for a design document. I've generated a class diagram in VS. At the moment it's just a bunch of unconnected boxes as there isn't any inheritance going on. It feels like it would be more useful if I could show how the objects interact through properties and parameters. As an example, a Boy class has a method Kiss which takes a Girl object. How can I show that Boy and Girl interact by connecting this in the diagram? Is there a notation for this in UML? Or is there another type of diagram that shows this? Can I make VS draw this connection for me somehow? Or is this a silly/useless idea? It just doesn't feel like a proper diagram unless it's got some lines on it somewhere :)

  class String contains very useful method - String.Join(string, string[]). It creates a string from an array, separating each element of array with a symbol given. But general - it doesn't add a separator after the last element! I uses it for ASP.NET coding for separating with "<br />" or Environment.NewLine. So I want to add an empty row after each row in asp:Table. What method of IEnumerable<TableRow> can I use for the same functionality?

• IIS 6 session timing out a lot quicker than expected

  I am working with an web application that has its sessions timing out a lot quicker than expected. We expected a timeout of 15 minutes but it's timing out at 3-4 minutes. Info about environment: IIS6 classic ASP / COM+ app timeout OK on current PROD, much quicker in dev / QA environments We already disabled app pool recycling, and even put IIS in isolation mode - no effect HTTP err log doesn't display any lines when session times out We've done a close comparison of PROD and DEV / QA environments, and given we use virtual machines on all of them, settings should be preserved. I tried to find IIS blog notes from David Wang but many of them now have HTTP 404 errors, and I don't know what else to do. Please help! At the very least, is there a way to get IIS to log every time a session expires? At the very least some means of logging / debugging IIS would be useful. Thanks in advance.

• Mapping words to numbers with respect to definition

  As part of a larger project, I need to read in text and represent each word as a number. For example, if the program reads in "Every good boy deserves fruit", then I would get a table that converts 'every' to '1742', 'good' to '977513', etc. Now, obviously I can just use a hashing algorithm to get these numbers. However, it would be more useful if words with similar meanings had numerical values close to each other, so that 'good' becomes '6827' and 'great' becomes '6835', etc. As another option, instead of a simple integer representing each number, it would be even better to have a vector made up of multiple numbers, eg (lexical_category, tense, classification, specific_word) where lexical_category is noun/verb/adjective/etc, tense is future/past/present, classification defines a wide set of general topics and specific_word is much the same as described in the previous paragraph. Does any such an algorithm exist? If not, can you give me any tips on how to get started on developing one myself? I code in C++.

I've been using Eclipse with the C++ pluging , for C development, for the last couple months, but I found it not very useful, especially the debugging process that was quite annoying. I love Vistal Studio, so I'm looking for something really close to it. I need an IDE that will provide me, among other things: - rich debugging options - easy to use graphical designer - underscores error/warning (before I compile - like eclipse has) - Intellisense and more...   What's the best way to check if the view is visible on the window? I have a CustomView which is part of my SDK and anybody can add CustomView to their layouts. My CustomView is taking some actions when it is visible to the user periodically. So if view becomes invisible to the user then it needs to stop the timer and when it becomes visible again it should restart its course. But unfortunately there is no certain way of checking if my CustomView becomes visible or invisible to the user. There are few things that I can check and listen to: onVisibilityChange //it is for view's visibility change, and is introduced in new API 8 version so has backward compatibility issue onWindowVisibilityChange //but my CustomView can be part of a ViewFlipper's Views so it can pose issues onDetachedFromWindows //this not as useful onWindowFocusChanged //Again my CustomView can be part of ViewFlipper's views. So if anybody has faced this kind of issues please throw some light.

• My Ruby Code: How can I improve? (Java to Ruby guy)

  Greetings, I get the feeling that I'm using ruby in an ugly way and possibly missing out on tonnes of useful features. I was wondering if anyone could point out a cleaner better way to write my code which is pasted here. The code itself simply scrapes some data from yelp and processes it into a json format. The reason I'm not using hash.to_json is because it throws some sort of stack error which I can only assume is due to the hash being too large (It's not particularly large). Suppose I created a very small simple and useful program or a tool and would like to share it with everyone by uploading it to my web-site. Do I need a license and which one? (I read http://www.gnu.org/ and http://www.fsf.org/ but still cannot decide - there are too many of them.) • Arduino not able to send serial data back

  Hello everyone So i found out how to connect the arduino to my java program. But using the seriel connections dosent give any useful data back, its either in the wrong format, or just sends it as a box. I've looked at the related questions posted early in here, but none of the tips seems to help. So does anyone know how to send the data between an arduino and a computer using the serieal port? P.S I've used the sample code from the arduino.cc homepage to connect to the serial port.

  This is strange: DateList@AbsoluteTime[596523] returns {2078, 7, 2, 2, 42, 9.7849} But DateList@AbsoluteTime[596524] returns {1942, 5, 26, 20, 28, 39.5596} The question: What's going on? Note that AbsoluteTime with a numeric argument is undocumented. (I think I now know what it's doing but figured this is useful to have as a StackOverflow question for future reference; and I'm curious if there's some reason for that magic 596523 number.) • Is there a way to hide annotations in Netbeans or Eclipse?

  Maybe a dumb question, but it would be nice if there was a way to hide or collapse Java annotations when viewing source in Netbeans (or Eclipse). I'm not finding an option and a quick search didn't turn anything up. Is this one of those "you should never want to do that, code folding is a sin!" things? Personally I'd find it useful for annotated entity classes. All the hibernate / etc annotations are just fluff that I never look at once my mapping is working fine. It's similar to imports, really. (Yes, I can use XML instead of annotations, which I might start doing. But I was just wondering...)

  We initially didn't use any logging or debug tracing but after spending few weeks to trace down some data corruption we decided to put required Debug.Write and Trace for production and Debug.Assert So now question is What is the best practice to use debug and trace logging. I am just looking for some thing generic. public void AddRectodatabase(object record) { Debug.WriteLine(record.ToString()); Trace.WriteLine(record.ToString()); // Add it to databse Debug.Assert(true, "Use this on case by case basis"); } Is this good enough for general purpose, am i doing anything wrong in there? We want to stick with .net System.Diagnostics over other alternatives like log4net. Is there any thing else useful in System.Diagnostics?

• Programming with midi, and tuning notes to specific frequencies

  I am working on a project in which I need to be able to generate midi notes of varying frequencies with as much accuracy as possible. I originally tried to write my program in Java, but it turns out that the sound.midi package does not support changing the tunings of notes unless the frequencies are Equal Tempered frequencies (or at least it didn't in 1.4, and I haven't been able to find evidence that this has been fixed in recent versions). I have been trying to find a more appropriate language/library to accomplish this task, but since this is my first time programming with MIDI and my need for specific tuning functionality is essential, I have been having considerable trouble finding exactly what I need. I am looking for advice from people who have experience writing MIDI programs as to what languages are useful, especially for tuning notes to specific frequencies. Any links to websites with API docs and example code would also be extremely helpful.
