• Catching Oracle Errors in Django

  My Django app runs on an Oracle database. A few times a year, the database is unavailable because of a scheduled process or unplanned downtime. However, I can't see how to catch the error a give a useful message back to the requester. Instead, a 500 error is triggered, and I get an email (or hundreds) showing the exception. One example is: File "/opt/UDO/env/events/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django/db/backends/oracle/base.py", line 447, in _cursor self.connection = Database.connect(conn_string, **conn_params) DatabaseError: ORA-01035: ORACLE only available to users with RESTRICTED SESSION privilege I see a similar error with a different ORA number when the DB is down. Because the exception is thrown deep within the Django libraries, and can be triggered by any of my views or the built in admin views, I don't know where any exception trapping code would go. Any suggestions?

• bash command history update before execution of command

  Hi, Bash's command history is great, especially it is useful when adding the history -a command to the COMMAND_PROMPT. However, I'm wondering if there is a way to log the commands to a file as soon as the Return key is pressed, e.g. before starting the command and not on completion of the command (using the COMMAND_PROMPT option would save the command once the prompt is there again). I read about auditing programs like snoopy and session recorder like script but I thought they're already too complex for the simple question I have. I guess that deactivating that script logs all the output of the command would lead already in the right direction but isn't there a quicker way to solve that probelm? Thanks, Jon

• Delegate methods of NSTextField using NSNotification

  I have an NSTokenField in a window. I am using it to store tags related to a Core Data object. Right now I have it set up such that I can add tags to the objects, but I cannot delete them. I need a delegate method on the NSTokenField that can let me know when the user has moved the focus out of the NSTokenField. Since NSTokenField is a subclass of NSTextField I figured that I could use its delegate methods. It has two that I think could be useful: - (void)textDidChange:(NSNotification *)aNotification - (void)textDidEndEditing:(NSNotification *)aNotification I set my controller class as the delegate of my NSTokenField and put both of these methods into my controller class. I put a basic NSLog into each of them and neither is triggered when I interact with the NSTokenField. I am guessing it has something to do with NSNotification. How do I activate these methods?

• GIS: When and why to use ArcObjects over GDAL programming to work with ArcGIS rasters and vectors?

  Im just starting off with GDAL + python to support operations that cannot be done with ArcGIS python geoprocessing scripting. Mainly I am doing spatial modeling/analysis/editing of raster and vector data. I am a bit confused when ArcObject development is required versus when GDAL can be used? Is there functionality of ArcObjects that GDAL does not do? Is the opposite true too? I am assuming that ArcObjects are more useful in developing online tools versus Desktop analysis and modeling where the difference is more to do with preference? In my case i prefer GDAL because of python support, which I believe ArcObjects lack. thanks!

  If I specify a system property multiple times when invoking the JVM which value will I actually get when I retrieve the property? e.g. java -Dprop=A -Dprop=B -jar my.jar What will be the result when I call System.getProperty("prop");? The Java documentation on this does not really tell me anything useful on this front. In my non-scientific testing on a couple of machines running different JVMs it seems like the last value is the one returned (which is actually the behavior I need) but I wondered if this behavior is actually defined officially anywhere or can it vary between JVMs?

  Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!) For Example: User input 2:00pm Eastern Time on my server I have different time zone, how to calculate the time and send the email at users time-zone. Its a web application. • Caching issues with TDBadgedCell

• Determine which process (b)locks a file, programmatically (under Windows >= XP)

  How to programmatically determine from a process P, which other process P' has a lock on a file, that prevents P from recreating that file ? I know there are tools to do that, but how do they achieve that ? (Context: a batch program that runs overnight fails because of a locked file. Running an admin tool the next day may be too late to get useful information. So it would be nice if the batch program itself was able to determine the culprit.) EDIT: Added complexity: the file resides on a DFS and P' might not run on the same machine as P (but maybe does). But a solution that works locally would be a good beginning.

  I heard R is the "de facto" language amongst statistical software developers, and I'm giving it a try. I already know the basics, but it still looks "weird" to me (a C developer). I think it would be very useful to see a working example to see how a real R program is built. I thought that an R solution for any of the mlbench problems would be optimal, because I'm already familiar with it and it would allow me to compare it to other languages, but any other "toy problem" example is welcome. • Automatic exit from bash shell script on error

  Hi, I've been writing some shell script and I would find it useful if there was the ability to halt the execution of said shell script if any of the commands failed. See below for an example: #!/bin/bash cd some_dir ./configure --some-flags make make install So in this case if the script can't change to the indicated directory then it would certainly not want to do a ./configure afterward it fails. Now I'm well aware that I could have an if check for each command (which I think is a hopeless solution), but is there a global setting to make the script exit if one of the commands fails?

• GAE Having Tasks generate pages for user

  I have a web app that I would like to have the following functionality: user gives a url webapp gets json data from that url and others from same website (this can take anywhere from 1-10 seconds) webapp uses data to generate page for user With this approach, I believe that if the server is in the process of getting the data for one user, then the other user won't be able to load the page (server busy). I would like to avoid this if possible. It seems like the Google Tasks API would be useful for this, but I don't see how I can run the task, and then use the output of the task to generate the page (how would the main app know when the task was finished?) What is the best way to resolve this? Thanks in advance

• Java's ThreadPoolExecutor equivalent for C#?

  Hi Guys, I used to make good use of Java's ThreadPoolExecutor class and have yet to find a good equivalent in C#. I know of ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem which is useful in many cases but no good if you want to control the number of threads assigned to a task or have multiple individual queues for different task types. For example I liked to use a ThreadPoolExecutor with a single thread to guarantee sequential execution of asynchronous calls.. Is there an easy way to do this in C#? Is there a non-static thread pool implementation? Thanks, T.

• Can I add custom methods/attributes to built-in Python types?

  For example—say I want to add a helloWorld() method to Python's dict type. Can I do this? JavaScript has a prototype object that behaves this way. Maybe it's bad design and I should subclass the dict object, but then it only works on the subclasses and I want it to work on any and all future dictionaries.   Has anyone spent any time comparing the various Objective C bridges and associated Cocoa wrappers for Mono? I want to port an existing C# application to run on OS X. Ideally I'd run the application on Mono, and build a native Cocoa UI for it. I'm wondering which bridge would be the best choice. • What's the point of lambda in scheme?

  I am learning scheme. I know how to use both lambda and let expressions. However I'm struggling to figure out what the point is of using lambda. Can't you do everything with let that you can with lambda? It would be especially helpful to see an example of a situation where a lambda expression is a better choice than let. One other thing - are there also situations where let is more useful than lambda? If so such an example would be nice as well. Thanks!

I have created a grid with 40 x 40 vertex3D (small but useful) I can pick a single vertex out of that grid by simply calling a function with the position array[X][Y], And therefore neighbors too. How can I raise up neighbor vertex Z value so they kinda look like a bubble or sphere kind of thingy? My first tough was to use: Neighbor_vertex.Z = sin(PI/4 * 1 - ( 1/ distance_between_Neighbor_and_Pivot) ) * desired_Max_Height But all I got is something like a wave.... and I would like to have a bubble or Sphere like shape. • Handling ID's with db4o and ASP.NET MVC2

  So, i'm looking at the TekPub sample for ASP.NET MVC2 (http://mvcstarter.codeplex.com/) using DB4o and there are a bunch of templates to create controllers etc, the generated code looks like: public ActionResult Details(int id) { var item = _session.Single<Account>(x=>x.ID == id); return View(item); } Now, my understanding is that using DB4o or a simliar object database that ID's are not required, so how/what exactly do I pass to enable this kind of templated code to function? UPDATE: Both answers were useful, I have modifed the templates to use GUID as the ID. I will add any relevant code/notes here once I see how it works out.

• How to use a CTabCtrl in a MFC dialog based application ?

  I need to do something which i expected to be was simple - create a tab control which has 2 tabs, implying 2 modes of operation for my app. When user clicks on Tab1, he'll be presented with some buttons and textboxes, and when he clicks Tab2, some other input method. I noticed that there was a CTabCtrl class thats used in MFC to add tabs. However, once I added the tab ctrl using the UI designer, I couldn't specify how many tabs there'll be using property window. Searching on the net, I found some examples but all of them required you to derive from CtabCtrl , create 2 or more child dialogs etc and to write your own custom class. My question is, since I want to do something so basic, why couldn't I do it using the familiar Add Event handler/Add member variable wizard and then handle everything else inside my app's class ? Surely, the default CTabCtrl class can do something useful without needing to derive from it ?

  hi i play a game called maplestory because a LOT of my friends do and i want to talk to them online and they will only chat on maplestory because they are playing it. i would like to build a program that will send my chats to maplestory and it will be a small little chat window because i can't do much well im chatting on Maplestory. i have tryed sending my fake input to maplestory but their anti-hack shield blocks it, i can't find a way by it with out running a by pass to their anti-hack shield which i don't really want to do :( so i need a way to send stuff by so i can chat. please don't tell me to use a by pass i really would like to find a way to leave it running. also i only really need keyboard input not really the mouse because to chat you only have to hit enter then type text then enter to send, but hey it might come in useful. also if the way only works for the top window i can just make something that swhitchs back and forth.

  Hello, I am interested in writing an email sniffer that saves all emails sent via web based clients to hd, but I can't work out how to do this. How can I catch HTTPS mail before it is encrypted? I would really appriciate some useful info. I cannot find anything information on the web. There's a program called HTTP Analyzer V5 that does the exact thing I want to make. How should I start? If I make a packet sniffer, it's useless because all data is encrypted. Is there any other option?

Basically I wanted to make an SMS messaging app, but it would only be useful if I could see past threads etc. It seems like there's a content provider for this, but I can't find documentation for it - anyone know where that is?   I know we can open a particular worksheet of MS Excel using C# by providing the sheet number (1,2,3..) or name (sheet1, sheet2, sheet3...) I have a excel file which has 2 sheets, 1. Values, 2. Results Is there a way to open a sheet giving the sheet name ,i.e, "Values" instead of 1 or [s|S]heet1 in C# ?? I looked thru the old posts but didnt find anything useful... so again, what I am trying to do is, open a Excel worksheet by using its user defined name (Values) instead of the system defined name(1 or [s|S]heet1) any inputs would be greatly appreciated!
