• Unknown Build Error using WPF Toolkit

  I installed the Feb 2010 WPF Toolkit as I'm interested in evaluating the AutoCompleteBox control and I'm having extremely limited success. I can get the control to work, but as soon as I try and set any of it's properties in XAML, I get the following: Unknown build error, 'Cannot resolve dependency to assembly 'WPFToolkit, Version=3.5.40128.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' because it has not been preloaded. When using the ReflectionOnly APIs, dependent assemblies must be pre-loaded or loaded on demand through the ReflectionOnlyAssemblyResolve event. I've been testing this on a blank WPF window in a new solution. I'm guessing I'm just missing a reference or something... • CNAME Record in .htaccess file: correct format?

  In my .htaccess file, I have set up several A records in the following structure: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain.com$ [OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain.com$ RewriteRule ^substring\/substring\/etc?$ "http\:\/\/domain\.com\/newsubstring\/etc\/" [R=301,L] Is is possible to easily set up a CNAME record in the same fashion and put it in my .htaccess file? Unfortunately, my dumb DNS (namecheap) doesn't let me change CNAME records because my site actually has hosting and isn't just a parked domain. (I actually just want to set up a CNAME for www, since at the moment www.domain.com doesn't work for me, and only domain.com -- I'm going to point the former to the latter.)

  I am trying out Silverlight's Isolated Storage feature. Currently running Silverlight thru ASP.NET page. • Common vulnerabilities for WinForms applications

  I'm not sure if this is on-topic or not here, but it's so specific to .NET WinForms that I believe it makes more sense here than at the Security stackexchange site. (Also, it's related strictly to secure coding, and I think it's as on-topic as any question asking about common website vulnerabiitles that I see all over the site.) For years, our team has been doing threat modeling on Website projects. Part of our template includes the OWASP Top 10 plus other well-known vulnerabilities, so that when we're doing threat modeling, we always make sure that we have a documented process to addressing each of those common vulnerabilities. Example: SQL Injection (Owasp A-1) Standard Practice Use Stored Parameterized Procedures where feasible for access to data where possible Use Parameterized Queries if Stored Procedures are not feasible. (Using a 3rd party DB that we can't modify) Escape single quotes only when the above options are not feasible Database permissions must be designed with least-privilege principle By default, users/groups have no access While developing, document the access needed to each object (Table/View/Stored Procedure) and the business need for access. [snip] At any rate, we used the OWASP Top 10 as the starting point for commonly known vulnerabilities specific to websites. (Finally to the question) On rare occasions, we develop WinForms or Windows Service applications when a web app doesn't meet the needs. I'm wondering if there is an equivalent list of commonly known security vulnerabilities for WinForms apps. Off the top of my head, I can think of a few.... SQL Injection is still a concern Buffer Overflow is normally prevented by the CLR, but is more possible if using non-managed code mixed in with managed code .NET code can be decompiled, so storing sensitive info in code, as opposed to encrypted in the app.config... Is there such a list, or even several versions of such a list, from which we can borrow to create our own? If so, where can I find it? I haven't been able to find it, but if there is one, it would be a great help to us, and also other WinForms developers.

  I just noticed a strange behavior which looks like a bug. • FileNotFoundException when running WiX CustomAction with COMAdmin interop

  I am trying to create a WiX custom action which will allow me to shutdown and clear down a COM+ package as part of an upgrade installation, or create and configure a new COM+ package as part of the initial installation. I previously had this running as a CustomAction within a standard Visual Studio MSI but this only allows the custom action to be executed after the files have been copied - which will fail as the package will still be running. The COMAdmin.dll has been added as a reference to the CustomAction project and is set CopyLocal=true. In the bin folder for the custom action project the Interop.COMAdmin.dll is present. The answer to this question seems to suggest that it should work. • WF4 workflow versioning using WorkflowServiceHost

  Related to this question. I understand how to implement versioning of workflows using WorkflowApplication. If you keep the original XAML definition for older versions of your workflow around, you can load them using the right WorkflowApplication constructor. How could you ensure that WorkflowServiceHost uses the correct workflow definition when you want to host your workflows in IIS? There is a WorkflowServiceHost constructor that you can use to load a workflow definition, but when you are hosting inside IIS through a XAMLX file, you do not call WorkflowServiceHost yourself, this is handled somehow by IIS. So how do I ensure that the correct workflow definition is loaded for the right version of my workflow?

• Problem in apache2 with mod rewrite when setting rules in .conf files instead of .htaccess

  Hi, Because of weird security policies of my hosting provider I have to define my rewrite rules in /etc/apache2/conf.d/examplesite.conf instead of writing them on an .htaccess on the www folder of that site. What I'm trying to do is setup a Wordpress Mu server (http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic/17349 ) and so far its working on a 50%. The main blog loads perfectly but other sub blogs (located for example at www.example.com/blog2 ) don't. I'm guessing the problem is that the rewrite rules behave differently when declared at .conf files for each virtual host instead of using .htaccess files. Has anybody else had this problem? How can you fix it?

  Hi: This is a strange problem I encountered. I have an window application written in c# to do testing. It has a MDI parent form that is hosting a few children forms. One of the forms launch test cripts by creating processes and capture the scripts output to a text box. Another form open serial port and monitoring the status of the device I am working on(like a shell). If I ran both of them together, the output of the script seems only appear in the text box after the test is done. However, If I don't open the serial port form, the output of the script is captured in real time. Does anyone knows what's causing the problem? I notice the onDataReceived even handler for serial port form has a [SAThread] header to it. Will this cause the serial port thread having higher priority than other processes? Thanks in advance.

• Python script repeated auto start up.

  I am designing a python web app, where people can have an email sent to them on a particular day. So a user puts in his emai and date in a form and it gets stored in my database. My script would then search through the database looking for all records of todays date, retrive the email, sends them out and deletes the entry from the table. Is it possible to have a setup, where the script starts up automatically at a give time, say 1 pm everyday, sends out the email and then quits? If I have a continuously running script, i might go over the CPU limit of my shared web hosting. Or is the effect negligible? Ali

• Java native methods issues with SUN JVM (jdk1.5.0_14) and multi-core CPU’s

  We are hosting an application on SUN JVM that handles a lot of XML parsing using Jaxb. The application is parsing the XML fine using JRockit 5 but when using the SUN JVM the JVM spends a majority of it’s time on native methods such as java-lang.System.arraycopy, java.lang.String.intern and java.lang.ClassLoader.getPackage. The CPU load is approx. 60% higher when using SUN JVM compared with JRockit. Even stranger is that when we only run the application server using one core (in WMWare) the problem disappears. • Silverlight 4 HttpWebRequest user agent string is null

  The problem I have a page with a silverlight object. It attempts to retrieve XML from the page. But I am struggling with a security exception. I have this code working brilliantly in WPF. When using a website hosting a silverlight application with the same code, the user agent string of the HttpRequest object is null (and seemingly cannot be set). In fact there is no header information at all - this causes a security exception when attempting to make my asynchronous call. The question Why is the user-agent string (and header information) null in my silverlight 4 application when making an asynchronous call using HttpWebRequest? Thanks in advance!

• Outlook 2003 View Control with C#

  I want to embed a custom c# windows form (or WPF) user control into an outlook view. I am using Outlook 2003 and Visual Studio 2008. I did download an example for Outlook 2007 here: http://blogs.msdn.com/e2eblog/archive/2008/01/09/outlook-folder-homepage-hosting-wpf-activex-and-windows-forms-controls.aspx and also here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa479345.aspx I tested it and under 2007 it is working, but for 2003 i am getting the following error when i want to open the view: Could not complete the operation due to error 80131509 I can start it from Visual Studio, it is registering the folder just fine, debugging works and all that. It creates an HTML page that contains my type as an object parameter - but the Initialize method that should be called is either not present (not shown via JS) or it has some errors. The breakpoints for RegisterSafeForScripting are also never hit - maybe related to that. Thx in advance!

  I'm primarily a web app developer/entrepreneur, so there's a lot I don't know about the desktop software distribution process. I've been thinking about making a Mac OS X app for fun, that I would distribute for free or a really small donation, but started thinking about distribution+download analytics: a) How do you host your software? Just on your web server/amazon s3 as the CDN? b) How do you track download analytics? On the flip side, I've thought about developing a simple service that does just this: Offers CDN hosting for software downloads, analytics by version, lets users share the app upon download, and makes the whole process a lot easier for ISVs. • Strange error occurring when using wcf to run query against sql server

  Hi all, I am building an asp.net application, using II6 on windows server 2003 (vps hosting). I am confronted with an error I didn't receive on my development machine (windows 7, iis 7.5, 64 bit). When my wcf service tries launching my query running against a local sql server this is the error I receive: Memory gates checking failed because the free memory (43732992 bytes) is less than 5% of total memory. As a result, the service will not be available for incoming requests. To resolve this, either reduce the load on the machine or adjust the value of minFreeMemoryPercentageToActivateService on the serviceHostingEnvironment config element. and ideas??

  I have been asked to build an application where I can drag and drop few WebControls onto the WebPage designer surface. So far I have read some articles on .NET Framework Design-Time architecture, like, MSDN Article: Hosting WinForms Designers, Developer Function Article etc. But I can't a find a way to host WebForms designer. The only open source implementation that I could find was Mono Develop ASP.NET Visual Designer. But in mono they have used GTK# & Gecko etc to host the designer. I can't find a way to do the same using WinForms. Please suggest me what should I do. Give me some pointers. Should I go ahead and implement it using GTK# and Gecko? PS: My requirement is not very huge. I need just a way to drag and drop simple web controls and save the page.

• Is it possible to connect iPhones through NAT traversal techniques over 3G for peer 2 peer gaming

  Is it possible to connect an iPhone to another iPhone or any other network client talking that game's protocol. I was thinking that I could use the same NAT Traversal technique used in the XBox 360 to host games on users XBox's through Firewalls. For NAT traversal to work effectively I'd have to have a central server that would allow clients to "broadcast" that they were hosting so that another client could initiate the NAT connection. In the link provided this is called relaying. Is there any inherent limitation of the US AT&T 3G network that will block the NAT traversal techniques (would you be limited to wifi firewall NAT traversal)? I have a hosting environment where a custom ASP.Net CMS application needs to access the files in the root folder of a website even though it is in a virtual folder so it can be shared accross many sites. I can modify the Medium trust on the server and came up with this... <IPermission class="FileIOPermission" version="1" Read="$AppDir$;$AppDir$\.." Write="$AppDir$;$AppDir$\.." Append="$AppDir$;$AppDir$\.." PathDiscovery="$AppDir$;$AppDir$\.."/> Oddly enough, it works. Yes, I understand it is doing this for all the Apps. I am a bit at a loss as to easy ways to test what else is being exposed. Feels dangerous. Opinions?

• SQLCLR and DateTime2

  Using SQL Server 2008, Visual Studio 2005, .net 2.0 with SP2 (has support for new SQL Server 2008 data types). I'm trying to write an SQLCLR function that takes a DateTime2 as input and returns another DateTime2. e.g. : using System; using System.Data.SqlTypes; using Microsoft.SqlServer.Server; namespace MyCompany.SQLCLR { public class DateTimeHelpCLR { [SqlFunction(DataAccess = DataAccessKind.None)] public static SqlDateTime UTCToLocalDT(SqlDateTime val) { if (val.IsNull) return SqlDateTime.Null; TimeZone tz = System.TimeZone.CurrentTimeZone; DateTime res = tz.ToLocalTime(val.Value); return new SqlDateTime(res); } } } Now, the above compiles fine. I want these SqlDateTimes to map to SQL Server's DateTime2, so I try to run this T-SQL : CREATE function hubg.f_UTCToLocalDT ( @dt DATETIME2 ) returns DATETIME2 AS EXTERNAL NAME [SQLCLR].[MyCompany.SQLCLR.DateTimeHelpCLR].UTCToLocalDT GO This gives the following error : Msg 6551, Level 16, State 2, Procedure f_UTCToLocalDT, Line 1 CREATE FUNCTION for "f_UTCToLocalDT" failed because T-SQL and CLR types for return value do not match. Using DATETIME (instead of DATETIME2) works fine. But I'd rather use DATETIME2 to support the increased precision. What am I doing something wrong, or is DateTime2 not (fully) supported by SQLCLR ?
