• Restore Your PC from Windows Home Server

  If your computer crashes or you get a virus infection that makes it unrecoverable, doing a clean install can be a hassle, let alone getting your data back. If you’re backing up your computers to Windows Home Server, you can completely restore them to the last successful backup. Note: For this process to work you need to verify the PC you want to restore is connected to your network via Ethernet. If you have it connected wirelessly it won’t work. Restore a PC from Windows Home Server On the computer you want to restore, pop in the Windows Home Server Home Computer Restore disc and boot from it. If you don’t have one already made, you can easily make one following these instructions. We have also included the link to the restore disc below. Boot from the CD then select if your machine has 512MB or RAM or more. The disc will initialize… Then choose your language and keyboard settings. Hopefully if everything goes correctly, your network card will be detected and you can continue. However, if it doesn’t like in our example, click on the Show Details button. In the Detect Hardware screen click on the Install Drivers button. Now you will need to have a USB flash drive with the correct drivers on it. It has to be a flash drive or a floppy (if you happen to still have one of those) because you can’t take out the Restore CD. If you want to make sure you have the correct drivers on the USB flash drive, open the Windows Home Server Console on another computer on your network. In the Computers and Backup section right-click on the computer you want to restore and select View Backups. Select the backup you want to restore from and click the Open button in the Restore or view Files section. Now drag the entire contents of the folder named Windows Home Server Drivers for Restore to the USB flash drive. Back to the machine you’re trying to restore, insert the USB flash drive with the correct drivers and click the Scan button. Wait a few moments while the drivers are found then click Ok then Continue.   The Restore Computer Wizard starts up… Enter in your home server password and click Next. Select the computer you want to restore. If it isn’t selected by default you can pull it up from the dropdown list under Another Computer. Make certain you’re selecting the correct machine. Now select the backup you want to restore. In this example we only have one but chances are you’ll have several. If you have several backups to choose from, you might want to check out the details for them. Now you can select the disk from backup and and restore it to the destination volume. You might need to initialize a disk, change a drive letter, or other disk management tasks, if so, then click on Run Disk Manger. For example we want to change the destination drive letter to (C:).   After you’ve made all the changes to the destination disk you can continue with the restore process. If everything looks correct, confirm the restore configuration. If you need to make any changes at this point, you can still go back and make them. Now Windows Home Server will restore your drive. The amount of time it takes will vary depend on the amount of data you have to restore, network connection speed, and hardware. You are notified when the restore successfully completes. Click Finish and the PC will reboot and be restored and should be working correctly. All the updates, programs, and files will be back that were saved to the last successful backup. Anything you might have installed after that backup will be gone. If you have your computers set to backup every night, then hopefully it won’t be a big issue.   Conclusion Backing up the computers on your network to Windows Home Server is a valuable tool in your backup strategy. Sometimes you may only need to restore a couple files and we’ve covered how to restore them from backups on WHS and that works really well. • #OOW 2012 : IaaS, Private Cloud, Multitenant Database, and X3H2M2

  The title of this post is a summary of the 4 announcements made by Larry Ellison today, during the opening session of Oracle Open World 2012... To know what's behind X3H2M2, you will have to wait a little, as I will go in order, beginning with the IaaS - Infrastructure as a Service - announcement. Oracle IaaS goes Public... and Private... Starting in 2004 with Fusion development, Oracle Cloud was launch last year to provide not only SaaS Application, based on standard development, but also the underlying PaaS, required to build the specifics, and required interconnections between applications, in and outside of the Cloud. Still, to cover the end-to-end Cloud  Services spectrum, we had to provide an Infrastructure as a Service, leveraging our Servers, Storage, OS, and Virtualization Technologies, all "Engineered Together". This Cloud Infrastructure, was already available for our customers to build rapidly their own Private Cloud either on SPARC/Solaris or x86/Linux... The second announcement made today bring that proposition a big step further : for cautious customers (like Banks, or sensible industries) who would like to benefits from the Cloud value of "as a Service", but don't want their Data out in the Cloud... We propose to them to operate the same systems, Exadata, Exalogic & SuperCluster, that are providing our Public Cloud Infrastructure, behind their firewall, in a Private Cloud model. Oracle 12c Multitenant Database This is also a major announcement made today, on what's coming with Oracle Database 12c : the ability to consolidate multiple databases with no extra additional  cost especially in terms of memory needed on the server node, which is often THE consolidation limiting factor. The principle could be compare to Solaris Zones, where, you will have a Database Container, who is "owning" the memory and Database background processes, and "Pluggable" Database in this Database Container. This particular feature is a strong compelling event to evaluate rapidly Oracle Database 12c once it will be available, as this is major step forward into true Database consolidation with Multitenancy on a shared (optimized) infrastructure. X3H2M2, enabling the new Exadata X3 in-Memory Database Here we are :  X3H2M2 stands for X3 (the new version of Exadata announced also today) Heuristic Hierarchical Mass Memory, providing the capability to keep most if not all the Data in the memory cache hierarchy. Of course, this is the major software enhancement of the new X3 Exadata machine, but as this is a software, our current customers would be able to benefit from it on their existing systems by upgrading to the new release. But that' not the only thing that we did with X3, at the same time we have upgraded everything : the CPUs, adding more cores per server node (16 vs. 12, with the arrival of Intel E5 / Sandy Bridge), the memory with 512GB memory as well per node,  and the new Flash Fire card, bringing now up to 22 TB of Flash cache. All of this 4TB of RAM + 22TB of Flash being use cleverly not only for read but also for write by the X3H2M2 algorithm... making a very big difference compare to traditional storage flash extension. But what does those extra performances brings to you on an already very efficient system: double your performances compare to the fastest storage array on the market today (including flash) and divide you storage price x10 at the same time... Something to consider closely this days... Especially that we also announced the availability of a new Exadata X3-2 8th rack : a good starting point. As you have seen a major opening for this year again with true innovation. But that was not the only thing that we saw today, as before Larry's talk, Fujitsu did introduce more in deep the up coming new SPARC processor, that they are co-developing with us. And as such Andrew Mendelsohn - Senior Vice President Database Server Technologies came on stage to explain that the next step after I/O optimization for Database with Exadata, was to accelerate the Database at execution level by bringing functions in the SPARC processor silicium. All in all, to process more and more Data... The big theme of the day... and of the Oracle User Groups Conferences that were also happening today and where I had the opportunity to attend some interesting sessions on practical use cases of Big Data one in Finances and Fraud profiling and the other one on practical deployment of Oracle Exalytics for Data Analytics. In conclusion, one picture to try to size Oracle Open World ... and you can understand why, with such a rich content... and this only the first day !

  Yes, I'm an alliterating all-star; I missed my calling as a newspaper headline writer. I have recently received questions from several folks on support for QR codes. You know them they are everywhere you look, even here! How does Publisher handle QR codes then? In theory, exactly the same way we handle any other 2D barcode font. We need the font file, a mapping entry and an encoding class. With those three pieces we can embed QR codes into any output. To test the theory, I went off to IDAutomation, I have worked with them and many customers over the years and their fonts and encoders have worked great and have been very reliable. They kindly provide demo fonts which has made my life so much easier to be able to write posts like this. Their QR font and encoder is a little tough to find. I started here and then hit the Demo Now button. On the next page I hit the right hand Demo Now button. In the resulting zip file you'll need two files: AdditionalFonts.zip >> Automation2DFonts >> TrueType >> IDAutomation2D.ttf Java Class Encoder >> IDAutomation_JavaFontEncoder_QRCode.jar - the QRBarcodeExample.java is useful to see how to call the encoder. The font file needs to be installed into the windows/fonts directory, just copy and paste it in using file explorer and windows will install it for you. Remember, we are using the demo font here and you'll see if you get your phones decoder to looks a the font above there is a fixed string 'DEMO' at the beginning. You want that removed? Go buy the font from the IDAutomation folks. The Encoder Next you need to create your encoding wrapper class. Publisher does ship a class but its compiled and I do not recommend trying to modify it, you can just build your own. I have loaded up my class here. You do not need to be a java guru, its pretty straightforward. I'd recommend a java IDE like JDeveloper from a convenience point of view. I have annotated my class and added a main method to it so you can test your encoders from JDeveloper without having to deploy them first. You can load up the project form the zip file straight into JDeveloper.Next, take a look at IDAutomation's example java class and you'll see: QRCodeEncoder qre=new QRCodeEncoder();  String DataToEncode = "IDAutmation Inc.";  boolean ApplyTilde = false;  int EncodingMode = 0;  int Version = 0;  int ErrorCorrectionLevel = 0;  System.out.println( qre.FontEncode(DataToEncode, ApplyTilde, EncodingMode, Version, ErrorCorrectionLevel) ); You'll need to check what settings you need to set for the ApplyTilde, EncodingMode, Version and ErrorCorrectionLevel. They are covered in the user guide from IDAutomation here. If you do not want to hard code the values in the encoder then you can quite easily externalize them and read the values from a text file. I have not covered that scenario here, I'm going with IDAutomation's defaults and my phone app is reading the fonts no problem. Now you know how to call the encoder, you need to incorporate it into your encoder wrapper class. The DataToEncode string is passed in rather than hardcoded of course. With the class done you can now compile it, but you need to ensure that the IDAutomation_JavaFontEncoder_QRCode.jar is in the classpath. In JDeveloper, open the project properties >> Libraries and Classpaths and then add the jar to the list. You'll need the publisher jars too. You can find those in the jlib directory in your Template Builder for Word directory.Note! In my class, I have used package oracle.psbi.barcode; As my package spec, yours will be different but you need to note it for later. Once you have it compiling without errors you will need to generate a jar file to keep it in. In JDeveloper highlight your project node >> New >> Deployment Profile >> JAR file. Once you have created the descriptor, just take the defaults. It will tell you where the jar is located. Go get it and then its time to copy it and the IDAutomation jar into the Template Builder for Word directory structure. Deploying the jars On your windows machine locate the jlib directory under the Template Builder for Word install directory. On my machine its here, F:\Program Files\Oracle\BI Publisher\BI Publisher Desktop\Template Builder for Word\jlib. Copy both of the jar files into the directory. The next step is to get the jars into the classpath for the Word plugin so that Publisher can find your wrapper class and it can then find the IDAutomation encoder. The most consistent way I have found so far, is to open up the RTF2PDF.jar in the same directory and make some mods. First make a backup of the jar file then open it using winzip or 7zip or similar and get into the META-INF directory. In there is a file, MANIFEST.MF. This contains the classpath for the plugin, open it in an editor and add the jars to the end of the classpath list. In mine I have: Manifest-Version: 1.0 Class-Path: ./activation.jar ./mail.jar ./xdochartstyles.jar ./bicmn.jar ./jewt4.jar ./share.jar ./bipres.jar ./xdoparser.jar ./xdocore.jar ./xmlparserv2.jar ./xmlparserv2-904.jar  ./i18nAPI_v3.jar ./versioninfo.jar ./barcodejar.jar ./IDAutomation_JavaFontEncoder_QRCode.jar Main-Class: RTF2PDF I have put in carriage returns above to make the Class-Path: entry more readable, make sure yours is all on one line. Be sure to use the ./ as a prefix to the jar name. Ensure the file is saved inside the jar file 7zip and winzip both have popups asking if you want to update the file in the jar file.Now you have the jars on the classpath, the Publisher plugin will be able to find our classes at run time. Referencing the Font The next step is to reference the font location so that the rendering engine can find it and embed a subset into the PDF output. Remember the other output formats rely on the font being present on the machine that is opening the document. The PDF is the only truly portable format. Inside the config directory under the Template Builder for Word install directory, mine is here, F:\Program Files\Oracle\BI Publisher\BI Publisher Desktop\Template Builder for Word\config. You'll find the file, 'xdo example.cfg'. Rename it to xdo.cfg and open it in a text editor. In the fonts section, create a new entry:       <font family="IDAutomation2D" style="normal" weight="normal">              <truetype path="C:\windows\fonts\IDAutomation2D.ttf" />       </font> Note, 'IDAutomation2D' (in red) is the same name as you can see when you open MSWord and look for the QRCode font. This must match exactly. When Publisher looks at the fonts in the RTF template at runtime it will see 'IDAutomation2D' it will then look at its font mapping entries to find where that font file resides on the disk. If the names do not match or the font is not present then the font will not get used and it will fall back on Helvetica. Building the Template Now you have the data encoder and the font in place and mapped; you can use it in the template. The two commands you will need to have present are: <?register-barcode-vendor:'ENCODER WRAPPER CLASS'; 'ENCODER NAME'?> for my encoder I have: <?register-barcode-vendor:'oracle.psbi.barcode.BarcodeUtil'; 'MyBarcodeEncoder'?> Notice the two parameters for the command. The first provides the package 'path' and class name (remember I said you need to remember that above.)The second is the name of the encoder, in my case 'MyBarcodeEncoder'. Check my full encoder class in the zip linked below to see where I named it. You can change it to something else, no problem.This command needs to be near the top of the template. The second command is the encoding command: <?format-barcode:DATAT_TO_ENCODE;'ENCODER_METHOD_NAME';'ENCODER_NAME'?> for my command I have <?format-barcode:DATATEXT;'qrcode';'MyBarcodeEncoder'?>DATATEXT is the XML element that contains the text to be encoded. If you want to hard code a piece of text just surround it with single quotes. qrcode is the name of my encoder method that calls the IDAutomation encoder. Remember this.MyBarcodeEncoder is the name of my encoder. Repetition? Yes but its needed again. Both of these commands are put inside their own form fields. Do not apply the QRCode font to the second field just yet. Lets make sure the encoder is working. If you do not get the encoded text then go back and check that your jars are in the right spot and that you have the MANIFEST.MF file updated correctly. Once you do get the encoded text, highlight the field and apply the IDAutomation2D font to it. Then re-run the report and you will hopefully see the QR code in your output. If not, go back and check the xdo.cfg entry and make sure its in the right place and the font location is correct. That's it, you now have QR codes in Publisher outputs. Everything I have written above, has been tested with the 5.6.3, 10.1.3.4.2 codelines. I'll be testing the 11g code in the next day or two and will update you with any changes. One thing I have not covered yet and will do in the next few days is how to deploy all of this to your server. Look out for a follow up post. One note on the apparent white lines in the font (see the image above). Once printed they disappear and even viewing the code on a screen with the white lines, my phone app is still able to read and interpret the contents no problem. I have zipped up my encoder wrapper class as a JDeveloper 11.1.1.6 project here. Just dig into the src directories to find the BarcodeUtil.java file if you just want the code. I have put comments into the file to hopefully help the novice java programmer out. Happy QR'ing!

• luntbuild + maven + findbugs = OutOfMemoryException

  Hi, I've been trying to get Luntbuild to generate and publish a project site for our project including a Findbugs report. All other reports (Cobertura, Surefire, JavaDoc, Dashboard) work fine, but Findbugs bails out with an OutOfMemoryException. Excluding findbugs from report generation fixes the build --- although obviously without a Findbugs report. The funny thing is that I first encountered this problem locally and solved it by setting MAVEN_OPTS=-Xmx512m. This does not seem to be enough in Luntbuild, however: setting that exact same option as an environment variable of my builder doesn't make a difference. I've found a couple of posts on the 'net stating you should also add -XX:MaxPermSize=512m to MAVEN_OPTS and/or pass -Dmaven.findbugs.jvmargs=-Xmx512m to mvn.bat. None of these (or their combination) seem to help though so any hints would be greatly appreciated! Is it possible to reference other locations. So that I could boot from it, without limitations. because the flash drive can only contain 8gb of data. Is it possible? Anyone here tried this before?

  Even with just my text editor open (no web browser) and maybe the terminal, the baseline temperature is usually above 40 C. When i open 4-5 browser tabs in Safari (even if none of Sites have Flash) the temp can quickly go over 50 C. (In addition, i am observing these temps even though i have turned the fan up to 3000 rpms). (i have install smcFanControl on my MBA so i can see the temp in the menu bar.) So this means my MBA is running much warmer than my MBP; and in practice, it means that i have to be very careful how i use my MBA. Of course if i load a Site with Flash, it just freaks out, and often quickly goes above 65 C (I've installed a flash blocker to avoid this). Is anyone else observing this behavior? I have checked the Apple boards and sure enough, there are a lot of complaints, but nothing from Apple.

  Hi, i've just switched my debian server from mod_php to fastcgi following this tutorial everything goes right but now i've found that one of the hosted application that using AMFPHP for flash remoting is broken. I'm trying to understand what's happend. Looking at it with FireBug and FireAMF it seems that the responses has a content but the Flash callbacks never get called and if i try to open the service browser it displays this error: (mx.rpc::Fault)#0 errorID = 0 faultCode = "Client.Error.RequestTimeout" faultDetail = "The request timeout for the sent message was reached without receiving a response from the server." faultString = "Request timed out" message = "faultCode:Client.Error.RequestTimeout faultString:'Request timed out' faultDetail:'The request timeout for the sent message was reached without receiving a response from the server.'" name = "Error" rootCause = (null) It's strange it seems that the server takes a long time to responde, then (in the service browser) flash made a new call to the server and the old one get a response. Some problem with sessions ? Really no idea ....

• Map folder as drive permanently in Windows

  Lets say I need to map folder C:/D as drive D: One can use SUBST command to map folder as drive in Windows. SUBST d: C:/D I am absolutely happy how SUBST does the work. So I set this command as a startup task using the task manager. A problem here is that if I have a flash in a USB port while booting Windows, the flash is got mapped as D: and SUBST fails. The question is how to make C:/D to be D: permanently. So other drives (especially flash drives) don't break this during startup. P.S. I know I could set D: to be R: which is unlikely to conflict with other drives. But I would greatly appreciate another answer.

  Recently, I loaned my flash disk to one of my friends, who had Mac OS. He copied a file on it, whose name included a backslash (\). The flash disk is NTFS formatted. Windows does not allow such filenames, and neither opens the file, nor deletes it, nor lets me delete the file. There are naive approaches to this problem, like: Formatting the flash disk; Giving it back to my friend and asking to rename it; Loading into some live Linux and renaming it. However, I'm looking for something more clever, like a program that can do the trick under Windows. PS: There's a tool called NTFSWalker which can browse the MFT records of the NTFS, but is unable to make any changes to them.

• Computer hanged in the middle of bios flashing process

  I have a laptop: Toshiba Satellite c660-17j, today I decided to update BIOS. I've downloaded bios updater from manufacturer's web site, and in the middle of flashing process computer hanged. I was waiting more than 30 minutes, but nothing was changed on the screen, i've tryed to PRESS MORE BUTTONS, but there were no reactions, so i've turned it off by removing battery (all other methods failed, even pressing power button for ~10 secs). After that computer can't start. I understand, that there's MESS in BIOS chip, and it's possible to re-flash it with hardware programmer, but I don't have it. I remember, that on some PCs (even on my eeepc) there was possibility to re-flash bios by inserting usb flash-disk (with .dat file on it, which contained BIOS), and power on PC, while holding some keys combination, then PC was switching to BIOS programming mode and re-flashed BIOS, after that it was possible to boot up normaly. Is there a way to recover computer without hardware programming BIOS chip? p.s. sorry for my english.
