why do people still use tables, inline css, et al?

When you learn HTML and so forth nowadays, the mantra is always "Clean code = better code". So why do sites like Mobile Me and Google and Facebook all use huge amounts of tables and other not-semantically correct code? Thanks!

Why does this PHP script interfere with my CSS layout?

This page uses $_GET to grab an asset id and query a mysql database and return some information. If 'id' does not match anything, no results are displayed but the page looks fine. If 'id' is null an error would occur at $id = $_GET["id"] or die(mysql_error()); When this occurs, they page layout is not displayed correctly. How do I fix this? Bonus question: How would I get a message like "No matching results found" or something when the id does not match any id in the database or is null. OBJECTIVE To build an app that allows the user to search for locations. CURRENT STATE At the moment the locations listed are few, so they are just all presented when landing on the "dealers" page. BACKGROUND Previously there were only about 50 showrooms carrying a product we sell, so a static HTML page was fine. And displays as But the page size grew to about 1500 lines of code after doing this. We have gotten more and need a scalable solution so that we can add many more dealers fast. In other projects, I have previously used MustacheJS and to load in values from a JSON file. I know the ideally this will be an AJAX application. Perhaps I might be better off with database here? Below is what I have in mind so far, and it "works" up to a certain point, but seems not to be anywhere near the most sustainable solution that can be efficiently scaled. Facebook charset detection mechanism?

Today, I have looked into HTML code of facebook.com, and found something like this: <input type="hidden" value="€,´,€,´,?,?,?" name="charset_test"/> It's repeated two times inside the <form>...</form>. Any idea what this code might be useful for - some kind of server-side client charset detection? As far as I know, browser charset is being transmitted in HTTP request anyway (an "Accept-Charset" header).
