  • How is a VM isolated from the physical host?

    Hi, I was thinking about virtualisation and how to explain it to a non-technical person and one of the things that I was wondering was how to explain the way that a VM is isolated and seperate from the phyiscal machine (so I can have a virus on a VM but this would never effect my physical host, right?). How does this technology work exactly? As I am a programmer, when I think of isolating processes, I think of using appdomains (I work with C# primarily). Thanks

  • How to change a physical partition system to LVM?

    I have a server with Debian that have 3 physical partitions covering all the disk: boot, root y swap. Now I want to replace that partitions with LVM partitions. I know how install Debian with LVM at beginning, but in this case I can't install the system at beginning because the provider gets me a server with remote access and the system installed in this way. How can I change that partitions using only an ssh connection and possibly other remote server where to put some temporal data?

  • How to get physical partition name from iSCSI details on Windows?

    I've got a piece of software that needs the name of a partition in \Device\Harddisk2\Partition1 style, as shown e.g. in WinObj. I want to get this partition name from details of the iSCSI connection that underlies the partition. The trouble is that disk order is not fixed - depending on what devices are connected and initialized in what order, it can move around. So suppose I have the portal name (DNS of the iSCSI target), target IQN, etc. I'd like to somehow discover which volumes in the system relate to it, in an automated fashion. I can write some PowerShell WMI queries that get somewhat close to the desired info: PS> get-wmiobject -class Win32_DiskPartition NumberOfBlocks : 204800 BootPartition : True Name : Disk #0, Partition #0 PrimaryPartition : True Size : 104857600 Index : 0 ... From the Name here, I think I can fabricate the corresponding name by adding 1 to the partition number: \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1 - Partition0 appears to be a fake partition mapping to the whole disk. But the above doesn't have enough information to map to the underlying physical device, unless I take a guess based on exact size matching. I can get some info on SCSI devices, but it's not helpful in joining things up (iSCSI target is Nexenta/Solaris COMSTAR): PS> get-wmiobject -class Win32_SCSIControllerDevice __GENUS : 2 __CLASS : Win32_SCSIControllerDevice ... Antecedent : \\COBRA\root\cimv2:Win32_SCSIController.DeviceID="ROOT\\ISCSIPRT\\0000" Dependent : \\COBRA\root\cimv2:Win32_PnPEntity.DeviceID="SCSI\\DISK&VEN_NEXENTA&PROD_COMSTAR... Similarly, I can run queries like these: PS> get-wmiobject -namespace ROOT\WMI -class MSiSCSIInitiator_TargetClass PS> get-wmiobject -namespace ROOT\WMI -class MSiSCSIInitiator_PersistentDevices These guys return information relating to my iSCSI target name and the GUID volume name respectively (a volume name like \\?\Volume{guid-goes-here}), but the GUID volume name is no good to me, and there doesn't appear to be a reliable correspondence between the target name and the volume that I can join on. I simply can't find an easy way of getting from an IQN (e.g. iqn.1992-01.com.example:storage:diskarrays-sn-a8675309) to physical partitions mapped from that target. The way I do it by hand? I start Disk Management, and look for a partition of the correct size, verify that its driver says NEXENTA COMSTAR, and look at the disk number. But even this is unreliable if I have multiple iSCSI volumes of the exact same size. Any suggestions?

  • I need to monitor a physical RS232 port on an appliance?

    I need to verify what's being output on an RS232 port of an appliance that's running proprietary software (e.g. NOT Windows or Linux). The port is sending data to a target app on another appliance, but I need to verify/log the actual data raw outside of the appliances. Would appreciate a recommendation on process/software to attach to the physical sending port (I have a straight through RS232 cable) and grab sample output of that port.

  • Is it possible to dedicate the physical screen of a vmware server machine to a guest vm graphically?

    I have a vmware server 2.x running on ubuntu server (8.04). So the graphics card and the screen of the physical box are unused (I log in remotely and the host os has only the cli console installed). I wonder if it is possible to assign this graphics card to a virtual machine directly and use it for the gui of this guest? Or maybe if I add a second graphics card to the machine?

    Was: Design by contract: predict methods needed, discipline yourself and deal with code that comes to mind I like the idea of designing by contract a lot (at least, as far as I understand the principal). I believe it means you define intefaces first before you start implementing actual code, right? However, from my limited experience (3 OOP years now) I usually can't resist the urge to start coding pretty early, for several reasons: because my limited experience has shown me I am unable to predict what methods I will be needing in the interface, so I might as well start coding right away. or because I am simply too impatient to write out the whole interfaces first. or when I do try it, I still wind up implementing bits of code already, because I fear I might forget this or that imporant bit of code, that springs to mind when I am designing the interfaces. As you see, especially with the last two points, this leads to a very disorderly way of doing things. Tasks get mixed up. I should draw a clear line between designing interfaces and actual coding. If you, unlike me, are a good/disciplined planner, as intended above, how do you: ...know the majority of methods you will be needing up front so well? Especially if it's components that implement stuff you are not familiar with yet. ...resist the urge to start coding right away? ...deal with code that comes to mind when you are designing the interfaces? UPDATE: Thank you for the answers so far. Valuable insights! And... I stand corrected; it seems I misinterpreted the idea of Design By Contract. For clarity, what I actually meant was: "coming up with interface methods before implementing the actual components". An additional thing that came up in my mind is related to point 1): b) How do you know the majority of components you will be needing. How do you flesh out these things before you start actually coding? For arguments sake, let's say I'm a novice with the MVC pattern, and I wanted to implement such a component/architecture. A naive approach would be to think of: a front controller some abstract action controller some abstract view ... and be done with it, so to speak. But, being more familiar with the MVC pattern, I know now that it makes sense to also have: a request object a router a dispatcher a response object view helpers etc.. etc.. If you map this idea to some completely new component you want to develop, with which you have no experience yet; how do you come up with these sort of additional components without actually coding the thing, and stuble upon the ideas that way? How would you know up front how fine grained some components should be? Is this a matter of disciplining yourself to think it out thoroughly? Or is it a matter of being good at thinking in abstractions?

  • Error displaying a WinForm in Design mode with a custom control on it.

    I have a UserControl that is part of a Class library. I reference this project from my solution. This adds a control from the referenced project to my toolbox. I add tghe control to a form. Everything looks good, I compile all and run. Perfect... But when I close the .frm with the control on it and re-open it, I get this error. The code continues to run. It may have something to do with namespaces. The original namespace was simply "Design" and this was ambiguous and conflicting so i decided to rename it. I think that's when my problems began. To prevent possible data loss before loading the designer, the following errors must be resolved: 2 Errors Ignore and Continue Why am I seeing this page?   • Database - Designing an "Events" Table

    After reading the tips from this great Nettuts+ article I've come up with a table schema that would separate highly volatile data from other tables subjected to heavy reads and at the same time lower the number of tables needed in the whole database schema, however I'm not sure if this is a good idea since it doesn't follow the rules of normalization and I would like to hear your advice, here is the general idea: I've four types of users modeled in a Class Table Inheritance structure, in the main "user" table I store data common to all the users (id, username, password, several flags, ...) along with some TIMESTAMP fields (date_created, date_updated, date_activated, date_lastLogin, ...). To quote the tip #16 from the Nettuts+ article mentioned above: Example 2: You have a “last_login” field in your table. It updates every time a user logs in to the website. But every update on a table causes the query cache for that table to be flushed. You can put that field into another table to keep updates to your users table to a minimum. Now it gets even trickier, I need to keep track of some user statistics like how many unique times a user profile was seen how many unique times a ad from a specific type of user was clicked how many unique times a post from a specific type of user was seen and so on... One thing that I've come to like in this design is that I can keep track of all the user logins instead of just the last one, and thus generate some interesting metrics with that data. Due to the nature of the events table I also thought of making some optimizations, such as: #9: Since there is only a finite number of tables and a finite (and predetermined) number of events, the TABLE and EVENTS columns could be setup as ENUMs instead of VARCHARs to save some space. #14: Store IPs as UNSIGNED INT with INET_ATON() instead of VARCHARs. Store DATEs as TIMESTAMPs instead of DATETIMEs. Use the ARCHIVE (or the CSV?) engine instead of InnoDB / MyISAM. Overall, each event would only consume 14 bytes which is okay for my traffic I guess. Pros: Ability to store more detailed data (such as logins). No need to design (and code for) almost a dozen additional tables (dates and statistics). Reduces a few columns per table and keeps volatile data separated. Cons: Non-relational (still not as bad as EAV): SELECT * FROM events WHERE id = 2 AND table = 'user' ORDER BY date DESC(); 6 bytes overhead per event (ID, TABLE and EVENT). I'm more inclined to go with this approach since the pros seem to far outweigh the cons, but I'm still a little bit reluctant.. Am I missing something? What are your thoughts on this? Thanks!

  • Replace conditional with polymorphism refactoring or similar?

    Hi, I have tried to ask a variant of this question before. I got some helpful answers, but still nothing that felt quite right to me. It seems to me this shouldn't really be that hard a nut to crack, but I'm not able to find an elegant simple solution. (Here's my previous post, but please try to look at the problem stated here as procedural code first so as not to be influenced by the earlier explanation which seemed to lead to very complicated solutions: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2772858/design-pattern-for-cost-calculator-app ) Basically, the problem is to create a calculator for hours needed for projects that can contain a number of services. In this case "writing" and "analysis". The hours are calculated differently for the different services: writing is calculated by multiplying a "per product" hour rate with the number of products, and the more products are included in the project, the lower the hour rate is, but the total number of hours is accumulated progressively (i.e. for a medium-sized project you take both the small range pricing and then add the medium range pricing up to the number of actual products). Whereas for analysis it's much simpler, it is just a bulk rate for each size range. How would you be able to refactor this into an elegant and preferably simple object-oriented version (please note that I would never write it like this in a purely procedural manner, this is just to show the problem in another way succinctly). I have been thinking in terms of factory, strategy and decorator patterns, but can't get any to work well. (I read Head First Design Patterns a while back, and both the decorator and factory patterns described have some similarities to this problem, but I have trouble seeing them as good solutions as stated there. The decorator example seems very complicated for just adding condiments, but maybe it could work better here, I don't know. And the factory pattern example with the pizza factory...well it just seems to create such a ridiculous explosion of classes, at least in their example. I have found good use for factory patterns before, but I can't see how I could use it here without getting a really complicated set of classes) The main goal would be to only have to change in one place (loose coupling etc) if I were to add a new parameter (say another size, like XSMALL, and/or another service, like "Administration").   • MVVM: How to handle interaction between nested ViewModels?

    I'm been experimenting with the oft-mentioned MVVM pattern and I've been having a hard time defining clear boundaries in some cases. In my application, I have a dialog that allows me to create a Connection to a Controller. There is a ViewModel class for the dialog, which is simple enough. However, the dialog also hosts an additional control (chosen by a ContentTemplateSelector), which varies depending on the particular type of Controller that's being connected. This control has its own ViewModel. The issue I'm encountering is that, when I close the dialog by pressing OK, I need to actually create the requested connection, which requires information captured in the inner Controller-specific ViewModel class. It's tempting to simply have all of the Controller-specific ViewModel classes implement a common interface that constructs the connection, but should the inner ViewModel really be in charge of this construction? My general question is: are there are any generally-accepted design patterns for how ViewModels should interact with eachother, particularly when a 'parent' VM needs help from a 'child' VM in order to know what to do?

I need to audit DB changes- insert\updates\deletes to business objects. I can think of three ways to do this 1) DB Triggers 2) Hibernate interceptors 3) Spring AOP (This question is specific to a Spring\Hibernate\RDBMS- I guess this is neutral to java\c# or hibernate\nhibernate- but if your answer is dependent upon C++ or Java or specific implementation of hibernate- please specify) What are the pros and cons of selecting one of these strategies ?   • WinForms - Localization - UI controls positions different in additional Culture

    Hi, I did my UI settings.Original language is English. After that I set Localizable property to True. Copied original resx file to frmMain.de-De.resx (for example). Translated all strings. Everything works. But now I would like to change positions of controls. After that changes are visible only for original/primary Culture (En). When I change Culture to de-De then UI controls are on the "old positions"(?!) Is this normal behaviour? :O I'm unable to change controls positions on my form after localization? Can someone explain me this and give some best solution. I really have to change UI design but I don't want to manual copy all translated strings again.   • C# Solution - How many projects?

    Hey, I googled this a little but couldn't find a good result. Right now I'm building a web site and I'm trying to make it as correct as possible from a design point of view from the beginning. The problem I'm now facing is that when deciding to start with logging I needed a project to place this code in. As I could not find a suitable place in my currect projects I thought: hey, why not a logging class library? Is there a general guideline on how many projects you should have? I know this would be a rather small project but it would be nice to entirely get it out of my way! Any hints are appreciated :)

  • How To Create An ASP.NET Designer Host

    I have been asked to build an application where I can drag and drop few WebControls onto the WebPage designer surface. So far I have read some articles on .NET Framework Design-Time architecture, like, MSDN Article: Hosting WinForms Designers, Developer Function Article etc. But I can't a find a way to host WebForms designer. The only open source implementation that I could find was Mono Develop ASP.NET Visual Designer. But in mono they have used GTK# & Gecko etc to host the designer. I can't find a way to do the same using WinForms. Please suggest me what should I do. Give me some pointers. Should I go ahead and implement it using GTK# and Gecko? PS: My requirement is not very huge. I need just a way to drag and drop simple web controls and save the page.

    Hi There! I have a design problem . My application has multiple J2EE components ,In simple terms one acts as a service provider(Non UI) and others are consumers(UI webapp) . The consumer gets the configuration data from the service provider(this basically reads the data from DB) during the start up and stores it in the Cache. The cache gets refreshed after periodic time to reflect any changes done at the database. The Problem Apart from the cache refresh ,I also want to notify the consumers when someone changes the DB . that configuration has been changed please reload it. What notification mechanism's can I use to achieve this. Thanks! Pratik

  • Making the domain-model of tic tac toe

    I am trying to make the domain model of a Tic Tac Toe game. I'll try then to go on through the various steps of the Unified Process and later implement it in some language (C# or Java). I'd like to have some feedback if I'm going on the right path: I've defined the game with two actors, Player O and Player X. I'm not sure about defining both a Tile and a Tile State. Maybe I should only define a Tile and have the 3 possible states specialize from it? I'm not sure what is best: to have both Player O and Player X be associations with Tic Tac Toe or have them inherit from Player that is associated with Tic Tac Toe. Following the design shown on the pic, in theory we could have a Tic Tac Toe concept with 2 Player O's, which wouldn't be correct. What is your opinion on this? Also, am I missing something in the diagram? Although I can't see any other actors for Tic Tac Toe, should I have any other? Thanks

    I have a table (say "Demographics") on SQL Server. In this table are the following columns "LastName", "FirstName", "MiddleName", "Prefix" , "Suffix". I have one textbox to search for them on a webpage. My question: Whats a good design strategy for queries where the user could be searching for various combinations of names including last names that have spaces e.g. "Smith James Jr." . Our customers store Jr. sometimes in suffix and sometimes just tack it to lastname. Sometimes Smith James Jr could be the entire last name.
