    There are lots of answers to disable automatic send / receive for Outlook for Windows, but not for Mac. Does anyone know how to do this for Outlook 2010 for Mac? The options offer no obvious capability, I've disabled all my 'Schedules' and defined it to 'Send All' and 'Send & Receive All' manually... but nothing stops emails from going in and out of my inbox at their will! You can see my screenshot... I've tried this both enabled and disabled. Thanks! Adam

  • How do I permanently disable Linux's console screen saver, system-wide?

    I've got an Ubuntu server that boots up in text mode. It rarely has a screen or keyboard attached to it, but when I do attach a screen, I usually have to attach a keyboard too, because the darn console mode screen saver will be on and I'll need to hit a key to see what's going on. I'm aware that the setterm command can disable this, but it's a per-session thing. How can I make it so the machine never ever blanks the screen in text mode, even when it's first booted up and sitting at the login prompt?

  • How do I disable Windows Search Indexing Service while on battery on Windows 7?

    Since upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7, I've found laptop battery life is reduced. One issue is that the Windows Search Indexing Service is constantly running, even when on battery power. Using Resource Monitor shows it is often the top consumer of CPU time and top producer of disk activity. I imagine this is one of the primary reasons the battery is getting drained faster. I cannot find any options to tell Windows Search Indexing Service to not index while on battery power. The only solution seems to be to stop the service, and also disable the service (if you just stop it, it will restart itself after a while). Doing this gives me considerably more battery life, but it's a pain because I have to re-enable the service when plugged in again. Is there a better solution?

  • How to reduce the windows network browsing broadcast timeout or disable this function?

    Hello everyone. My residential network is make of 300 vlans (one per room). To browse them we are using a wins server. My problem is that when I try to browse the network, windows first tries to find the neighborhood using some broadcast, and only then does it query the wins server. This "broadcast period" lasts exactly 30 seconds and is very annoying. Can I reduce it, or can I completely disable this broadcast network discovery feature from my system?   • Netgear routers don't allow you to disable wireless admin??

    I just bought a new router, the NetGear WGR614. Nowhere in the settings can you disable the ability to administrate the router from a wireless connection, which opens it up to brute force attacks from outside the building. Furthermore, it doesn't require a direct connection to the router to admin either, you can admin it while you're connected to the Internet. This means it opens itself to the possibility of an attack from within the network. This is unbelievable to me. What am I missing? Can this be possible?

    I am using wkhtmltopdf for making a pdf of a page. My code executes the shell to run a command using this wkhtmltopdf library. Everything works fine in my wamp server but when the code runs on my web-server it does not work and gives the following error: Warning: shell_exec() has been disabled for security reasons in /home/pssptech/public_html/.../cert.php on line 272 I think that the php is running on safe mode on the server that's why the shell execution is disabled. But the main problem is I am unable to find the php.ini file on my remote web-server. Can you tell me where can I find the config file so that I can disable the safe mode? Thanks in advance.

    I just got a new Toshiba Tecra S11 notebook, which has a Core i5 520M CPU, and it appears to suffer from a well-known problem: a high pitched noise when the CPU is idle. Googling around revealed that this is caused by a specific power-saving mode in the CPU. In most cases, C4 mode is blamed for the noise. So my question is: is it possible to disable C4 mode (or any other "sleep" mode) using some utility or BIOS setting? I don't mind if it hurts battery life. I'd appreciate any advice on this matter. It's driving me crazy. FYI: I'm running Windows 7 64-bit

    On my laptop I have a built in wireless card and I got one external connected via usb. By ifconfig command I saw both the cards connects to internet and gets IP. eth1 - the interface my laptop has in-built wlan1 - I have connected externally via usb. Now I applied "sudo ifconfig eth1 down" so that i can use only wlan1. But this eth1 goes down for sometime and then come up again automatically. So I am not able to test my externally usb connected wifi adapter. Can anyone suggest me way to disable eth1 interface?

    I have been doing some extensive seeking in our SonicWall TZ-215 for the source(s) of unnecessary internet traffic, as we have issues with excessive traffic. As part of my research, I need to watch the Connections Monitor, which lists me all the current connections. This list becomes quite long, with 40+ devices on the network, it's tough to pinpoint the main causes. What I would like to do is disable the SonicWall its self from letting its internal components from connecting to anything. Is there any type of trick I can do in the Firewall which can prevent the router system from connecting to anything, to clean up the connections monitor and allow only suspicious traffic?

  • How to enable/disable authentication without password when executing commands as superuser?

    On a Fedora 19 system which I set up for somebody a while ago I noticed that no authentication is required when commands are executed as the superuser. So, for example, when running Yum Extender, configuring the firewall or running some command with sudo in the terminal, I am not asked to provide a password. (With graphical applications the authentication dialog pops up for a few milliseconds.) For better security I would like to disable this automatic (authentication-less) assumption of superuser privileges. I do not remember if or how I enabled this authentication without a password. I might have enabled it for convenience for the non-pro user of this machine, but did not do any "fancy" things (like editing config files) to do so. I did not edit the sudoer file. I just checked that. I might have checked a "Do not ask for password again" checkbox or something similar. Whatever I did, I would like to undo it and enforce authentication for superuser tasks again.

What just happened here??? Heartbeat on node04 stopped and told node03, which was the active node at the time. Somehow, node03 decided to start the cluster processes that were already running. (For the processes that are not critical, I always return a 0 from the startupscript so it does not stops the entire cluster when a non-essential part fails.) When starting ActiveMQ, it returns status 1 because it is already running. This fails the node and shuts everything down. As heartbeat is not running on the secondary node, it cannot failover to there. When I tried to run ha_takeover to restart the resources, absolutely nothing happened. Only after I restarted heartbeat on the primary node the resources could be started (after a delay of 2 minutes). These are my questions: Why does heartbeat on the primary node try to start the cluster processes again? Why did ha_takeover not work? What can I do to prevent this from happening?   • Is there a way to make Windows 8 delay loading the start screen until all startup programs have loaded?

    Currently Windows 8 will get to the start screen a good 10-15 seconds before my startup programs have loaded. Since these include my touchpad driver as well as a gamma correction program, I would prefer that they would load before this point. Is there anyway to do this - either by delaying Windows 8 showing the start screen, or perhaps by somehow having these programs run before reaching the login screen?

    Problem VS2010 and TFS2010 support creating so-called Coded UI Tests. All the demos I have found, start with the WPF application already running in the background when the Coded UI Test begins or the EXE is started using the absolute path to it. I, however, would like to start my WPF application under test from the unit test code. That way it'll also work on the build server and on my peer's working copies. How do I accomplish that? My discoveries so far a) This post shows how to start a XAML window. But that's not what I want. I want to start the App.xaml because it contains XAML resources and there is application logic in the code behind file. b) The second screenshot on this post shows a line starting with ApplicationUnterTest calculatorWindow = ApplicationUnderTest.Launch(...); which is conceptually pretty much what I am looking for, except that again this example uses an absolute path the the executable file. c) A Google search for "Programmatically start WPF" didn't help either.

    Hi all, I have modified a working Windows service that had always been starting beforehand. After adding the System.Management reference it now sometimes will not start automatically. I get the following error: Service cannot be started. System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80010002): Call was canceled by the message filter. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010002 (RPC_E_CALL_CANCELED)) I found another post here on SO with someone having the same issue. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/998883/why-wont-my-net-windows-service-start-automatically-after-a-reboot However, the proposed solution was to have the service start after the services it depends on have started. However, when I go to the Dependencies tab for my service, I see: Should I just use the workaround method of putting the thread to sleep, or is there a more proper way of getting this service to start correctly?   • Error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

    i know this is very much a "how long is a piece of string" type of question, however i have recently inherited a couple of applications that run as windows services, and i am having problems providing a gui (accessible from a context menu in system tray) with both of them. before you ask, the reason why we need a gui for a windows service is in order to be able to re-configure the behaviour of the windows service(s) without resorting to stopping/re-starting. my code works fine in debug mode, and i get the context menu come up, and everything behaves correctly etc. when i install the service via "installutil" using a named account (i.e., not Local System Account), the service runs fine, but doesn't display the icon in the system tray (i know this is normal behaviour because i don't have the "interact with desktop" option). here is the problem though - when i choose the "LocalSystemAccount" option, and check the "interact with desktop" option, the service takes AGES to start up for no obvious reason, and i just keep getting "Could not start the ... service on Local Computer. Error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion". incidentally, i increased the windows service timeout from the default 30 seconds to 2 minutes via a registry hack (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824344, search for TimeoutPeriod in section 3), however the service start up still times out. my first question is - why might the "Local System Account" login takes SOOOOO MUCH LONGER than when the service logs in with the non-LocalSystemAccount, causing the windows service time-out? what's could the difference be between these two to cause such different behaviour at start up? secondly - taking a step back, all i'm trying to achieve, is simply a windows service that provides a gui for configuration - I'd be quite happy to run using the non-Local System Account (with named user/pwd), if I could get the service to interact with the desktop (that is, have a context menu available from the system tray). is this possible, and if so how? any pointers to the above questions would be very much appreciated! thanks in advance for your help.

  • Jquery Date Picker: Append Start Date to End Date and display dates in the future only.

    Hello, I am using Jquery Date pickers to get Start and End Dates for an application I am building. I have two datepickers, one for a start date and one for an end date. When someone clicks a date in the start date picker I need that date to be appended automatically to the end date picker. I also need the end date picker to select future dates only from the date that has been appended to it. There are two demos on the jquery datepicker site that do what I want, but I am unsure how to combine them to both do what I want.   • Why does Python's math.factorial not play nice with threads?

    Why does math.factorial act so weird in a thread? Here is an example, it creates three threads: thread that just sleeps for a while thread that increments an int for a while thread that does math.factorial on a large number. It calls start on the threads, then join with a timeout The sleep and spin threads work as expected and return from start right away, and then sit in the join for the timeout. I've also tried this with PyPy 1.8.0 on Windows x86, and there result is slightly different.
