  • Magic Mouse problems dragging and dropping files in finder (Mac OSX 10.6.3)

    I have an issue dragging files around in the finder with my Magic Mouse. For example, I was trying to select and drag multiple files from the desktop onto an external hard drive. However, whenever I do so, the files either end up deselected (and the move doesn't happen). If I try to drag a single file, finder ends up doing whatever it does to enable the file to be renamed. Reverting back to the touchpad works fine. Is there a problem with drag-and-drop with this mouse, or is there a setting that I am missing (I've scoured the settings, and nothing is jumping out at me). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  • New CAT5 cable run is unstable - bad jacks? Bad cable?

    This is a little project I'm doing at home. I wanted to wire two rooms together (basically, the router is one room, and the switch is in the second room). So I ran a CAT5 between the two rooms, and wired an RJ45 jack in each room. I then hooked up the two jacks with two CAT5 cable to run it through the cable tester, and all 8 wires seem good. Now, when I connect the switch and the router, the connection is unstable -- I ping the router and it barely holds on for two pings before it disconnects, and stays in that unstable state. Just to make sure the router and the switch are ok, I connected them with long wire between the two rooms and the connection is absolutely stable, and pings continuously. What could be the cause for the unstable connection? Especially that it pings a few times, so there IS a connection. But why is it unstable? And how come the cable tester says it's ok, but it's unstable?

    My laptop has been having some random problems with hibernating properly. That is a whole another topic that I still haven't resolved, but this is a different issue. The issues are connected, I guess, because one time after my computer experienced a failed hibernate, my login screen changed: since then my login screen always appears as the standard one with a prompt to type in a password. I can still use the finger scanner by clicking "other credentials" button. But that's annoying having to do that every time; previously the prompt to use finger scanner was the default one, whereas the typing password access was the alternate. How do I bring this arrangement back? In other words, how to switch the default from the type password prompt to the finger scan prompt? From online searches, I have only found discussions of turning the biometric access on or off... but clearly it is turned on and working, since I can use it. It's just not the default for some reason...

    I have been using iMovie'09 for two days only. I need to edit some videos and make a DVD for a friend. It happens to me that I want to join two clips together to form one continuous clip, so when I export the video to iDVD, they won't be treat as two different chapters. The most obvious way to do so is to choose Edit-Join Clip, but that menu item was always gray out when I chose two adjacent clips. I tried to highlight two/three adjacent clips, two apart clips etc, but it is still grayed out. I googled for a while but it seems no one knows, anyone knows how to use the "Join Clip"?

  • How to make Synaptics touchpad work better on Linux?

    I have Debian Squeeze currently installed on a Samsung N250 netbook with a Synaptics touchpad. These touchpads are, generally, good, and everything works perfectly on Windows. The support is extremely sucky on Linux through. Of course it has all the cool features like two-finger scrolling, but the cursor (or whatever is a replacement for cursor when scrolling) is trembling awfully. It trembles when I just keep the finger on touchpad, it shakes awfully if the finger is close to the top of touchpad, and when I'm scrolling with it (no matter with two fingers or one), the page shakes a lot too. None of this behavior is observed even in Windows XP with just the default drivers installed.   • Modify or disable Windows 8 swipe gestures on touchpad / laptop

    I have an ASUS G75VW laptop with a Synaptic touchpad (/trackpad). When I move my finger from one edge towards the middle (the swipe), Windows 8 will bring up different stuff. This is a problem because the area where I can actually move the mouse with my finger is too small (or, I mostly use the top left of the touchpad). So I often end up doing a swipe and bringing up some menu, or to do the swipe so slow that no menu is appearing but the mouse pointer is also not moving when I move my finger. Quite annoying. When swiping from left edge it earlier swapped apps like crazy. I disabled that, so now it only brings up the same menu as pressing win+tab (or some times the charms bar, I never know which). I could change that by: Win+I - Change PC settings - General - When I swipe from the left edge, switch directly to my most recent app I've tried Mouse settings in Control Panel, driver settings for my touchpad and searching for swipe and gestures on my computer (which was what led me to the setting above) with no luck. How can I disable the swipe gestures, or change what they do? Thanks.

  • Shrinking physical volumes in LVM on a Linux Guest in ESXi 5.0

    The problem: Linux guest (OpenSuse 12.1), with multiple virtual disks attached. 3 disks are in a logical volume, two of which are exactly 2TB. None of the disks are independent, and due to the backup software we use, cannot be independent. When the two 2TB virtual disks are "dependent", the snapshot fails stating that the file is too large for the datastore. When I put those two disks in independent mode, snapshots work fine (the other disk is 1.8TB). I have therefore concluded that even shrinking the two physical disks by 100GB should solve the problem, however I am having trouble conceptualizing how to go about getting those disks smaller without breaking the LVM entirely. The actual LV has 1.3TB free, so there is plenty of space to shrink with. What I need to accomplish: Deallocate 100GB from the two, 2TB virtual disks within the linux guest. Shrink the two virtual disks by 100GB within vsphere (not as complicated). Are there any vsphere/LVM gurus that can give me a clue?

    If there are two physically separate hard drives, should they be treated as two pre-defined partitions? If yes: should they be treated as two primary partitions (including one or two of them can become extended partition(s) and be further subdivided into logical partitions)? Or they (or one part of each) can be treated as two logical partitions of a extended partition? Thanks! I intended to ask if there can be a primary/logical partition that are partially on both hard drives? And if there can be a logical partition on a hard drive and another logical partition on another hard, and the two logical partitions belong to the same extended partition? I guess the answers to both questions are no?

Thinking about the enterprise cloud, come to mind many possible configurations and new opportunities in enterprise environments. Various customers needs that serve as guides to this new trend are often very different, but almost always united by two main objectives: Elasticity of infrastructure both Hardware and Software Investments related to the progressive needs of the current infrastructure Characteristics of innovation and economy. A concrete use case that I worked on recently demanded the fulfillment of two basic requirements of economy and innovation.The client had the need to manage a variety of data cache, which can process complex queries and parallel computational operations, maintaining the caches in a consistent state on different server instances, on which the application was installed.In addition, the customer was looking for a solution that would allow him to manage the likely situations in load peak during certain times of the year.For this reason, the customer requires a replication site, on which convey part of the requests during periods of peak; the desire was, however, to prevent the immobilization of investments in owned hardware-software architectures; so, to respond to this need, it was requested to seek a solution based on Cloud technologies and architectures already offered by the market. Coherence can already now address the requirements of large cache between different nodes in the cluster, providing further technology to search and parallel computing, with the simultaneous use of all hardware infrastructure resources. Moreover, thanks to the functionality of "Push Replication", which can replicate and update the information contained in the cache, even to a site hosted in the cloud, it is satisfied the need to make resilient infrastructure that can be based also on nodes temporarily housed in the Cloud architectures. There are different types of configurations that can be realized using the functionality "Push-Replication" of Coherence. Configurations can be either: Active - Passive  Hub and Spoke Active - Active Multi Master Centralized Replication Whereas the architecture of this particular project consists of two sites (Site 1 and Site Cloud), between which only Site 1 is enabled to write into the cache, it was decided to adopt an Active-Passive Configuration type (Hub and Spoke). If, however, the requirement should change over time, it will be particularly easy to change this configuration in an Active-Active configuration type. Although very simple, the small sample in this post, inspired by the specific project is effective, to better understand the features and capabilities of Coherence and its configurations. Let's create two distinct coherence cluster, located at miles apart, on two different domain contexts, one of them "hosted" at home (on-premise) and the other one hosted by any cloud provider on the network (or just the same laptop to test it :)). These two clusters, which we call Site 1 and Site Cloud, will contain the necessary information, so a simple client can insert data only into the Site 1. On both sites will be subscribed a listener, who listens to the variations of specific objects within the various caches. To implement these features, you need 4 simple classes: CachedResponse.java Represents the POJO class that will be inserted into the cache, and fulfills the task of containing useful information about the hypothetical links navigation ResponseSimulatorHelper.java Represents a link simulator, which has the task of randomly creating objects of type CachedResponse that will be added into the caches CacheCommands.java Represents the model of our example, because it is responsible for receiving instructions from the controller and performing basic operations against the cache, such as insert, delete, update, listening, objects within the cache Shell.java It is our controller, which give commands to be executed within the cache of the two Sites So, summarily, we execute the java class "Shell", asking it to put into the cache 100 objects of type "CachedResponse" through the java class "CacheCommands", then the simulator "ResponseSimulatorHelper" will randomly create new instances of objects "CachedResponse ". Finally, the Shell class will listen to for events occurring within the cache on the Site Cloud, while insertions and deletions are performed on Site 1. Now, we realize the two configurations of two respective sites / cluster: Site 1 and Site Cloud.For the Site 1 we define a cache of type "distributed" with features of "read and write", using the cache class store for the "push replication", a functionality offered by the project "incubator" of Oracle Coherence.For the "Site Cloud" we expect even the definition of “distributed” cache type with tcp proxy feature enabled, so it can receive updates from Site 1.  Coherence Cache Config XML file for "storage node" on "Site 1" site1-prod-cache-config.xml Coherence Cache Config XML file for "storage node" on "Site Cloud" site2-prod-cache-config.xml For two clients "Shell" which will connect respectively to the two clusters we have provided two easy access configurations.  Coherence Cache Config XML file for Shell on "Site 1" site1-shell-prod-cache-config.xml Coherence Cache Config XML file for Shell on "Site Cloud" site2-shell-prod-cache-config.xml Now, we just have to get everything and run our tests. TEST 1The purpose of this test is to load the objects into the "Site 1" cache and seeing how many objects are cached on the "Site Cloud". Within the "Shell" launched with parameters to access the "Site 1", let’s write and run the command: load test/100 Within the "Shell" launched with parameters to access the "Site Cloud" let’s write and run the command: size passive-cache Expected result If all is OK, the first "Shell" has uploaded 100 objects into a cache named "test"; consequently the "push-replication" functionality has updated the "Site Cloud" by sending the 100 objects to the second cluster where they will have been posted into a respective cache, which we named "passive-cache". TEST 2The purpose of this test is to listen to deleting and adding events happening on the "Site 1" and that are replicated within the cache on "Cloud Site". In the "Shell" launched with parameters to access the "Site Cloud" let’s write and run the command: listen passive-cache/name like '%' or a "cohql" query, with your preferred parameters In the "Shell" launched with parameters to access the "Site 1" let’s write and run the following commands: load test/10 load test2/20 delete test/50 Expected result If all is OK, the "Shell" to Site Cloud let us to listen to all the add and delete events within the cache "cache-passive", whose objects satisfy the query condition "name like '%' " (ie, every objects in the cache; you could change the tests and create different queries).Through the Shell to "Site 1" we launched the commands to add and to delete objects on different caches (test and test2). With the "Shell" running on "Site Cloud" we got the evidence (displayed or printed, or in a log file) that its cache has been filled with events and related objects generated by commands executed from the" Shell "on" Site 1 ", thanks to "push-replication" feature.  Other tests can be performed, such as, for example, the subscription to the events on the "Site 1" too, using different "cohql" queries, changing the cache configuration,  to effectively demonstrate both the potentiality and  the versatility produced by these different configurations, even in the cloud, as in our case.   • How do Unity 12.04/Compiz bindings really work?

    There is a bewildering array of places to set bindings, all inconsistent with one another. E.g. in Unity's System Settings having the Ctrl-key highlight the mouse position is an on/off choice. I like the feature, but not on such a prominent key where I keep activating it accidentally. The keyboard shortcuts allow only one binding per command, where I might like a convenient one on the external keyboard and an emergency alternative for when I'm on the road. Keyboard custom shortcuts has a nice interface, but allows only key bindings — besides it doesn't seem to work for me. So I activated CCSM Commands. There I have the choice of key-, mouse- and/or edge bindings. Whereas some places in CCSM offers only one or two of these binding possibilities, randomly at the whim of the programmer. I have not found a way to differentiate a mouse-drag from a click. E.g. I want <SuperMouse1-drag anywhere on a window to move it, while if I don't drag, it should be raise-lower. On the title bar I want the same without needing the <Super key. Now I find raise-lower only in System Settings where I can't assign a mouse binding. If therefore in CCSM I fallback to only lower and put move on the same binding, the window already gets lowered on mouse down, and I can then invisibly move it. Very useful! I have <Altasciicircum get in the way of an Emacs binding, with some to me useless popup overlay. I can find it nowhere, so I can't turn it off. So how can I go without these frontends until they have matured, and instruct Compiz directly, for example in the way Emacs or Sawfish have keymaps, and separate ones for each context, with inheritance?

  • Ubuntu Unity (64-bit) Bugs on Nvidia dual screen [closed]

    On my work computer I have upgraded 10.04 to 10.10 and now to 11.04. Upgrades have mostly worked well and the dual screen setup is almost working. There are however a couple of annoying bugs which I tried to report but the bug reporting tool told me to ask about the bugs here. Here's what I have found: Auto-hide stops working. It doesn't seem to matter which application is maximised/covering the dock, it just stays on top. I have tested changing the autohide settings with no result. Scenario: One maximised window on each screen. If I now try to drag the window that doesn't have focus by dragging the top of the window nothing happens. I can also not give the window focus by clicking the top bar, I have to click inside the window and then I can drag the window. If I unmaximise the window with focus it does work and I can both change focus and drag the window directly by clicking the top of the maximised window. Any bug fixes coming for these issues? Any work-arounds?

  • WM6.5 embedded Internet Explorer finder scrolling

    I'm writing a .NET 3.5 application targetted for Windows Mobile 6.5. My application uses an embedded IE control to display content. The IE application allows the user to finger scroll around the webpage (i.e. touch the screen and drag instead of using the scrollbar). My IE control has a scrollbar and when I emulate the gesture, I highlight text instead of scrolling. Is there a way to add finger gesture support to an embedded IE control? Thanks, Aaron

In order to talk about the problem, I need to be posting a bunch of URLs, but the excessive URLs and my lack of reputation makes StackOverflow think I could be a spammer. Any instance of 'ht~tp' is supposed to be 'http'. '{dot}' is supposed to be '.' and '{colon}' is supposed to be ':'. Also, my lack of reputation has prevented me from tagging my question with 'webfinger' and 'google-profiles'. Onto my question: I am messing around with WebFinger and trying to create a small rails app that enables a user to log in using nothing but their WebFinger account. I can succesfully finger myself, and I get back an XRD file with the following snippet: Link rel="ht~tp://specs{dot}openid{dot}net/auth/2.0/provider" href="ht~tp://www{dot}google{dot}com/profiles/{redacted}"/ Which, to me, reads, "I have an OpenID 2.0 login at the url: ht~tp://www{dot}google{dot}com/profiles/{redacted}".   • In SQL, we can use "Union" to merge two tables. What are different ways to do "Intersection"?

    In SQL, there is an operator to "Union" two tables. In an interview, I was told that, say one table has just 1 field with 1, 2, 7, 8 in it, and another table also has just 1 field with 2, and 7 in it, how do I get the intersection. I was stunned at first, because I never saw it that way. Later on, I found that it is actually a "Join" (inner join), which is just select * from t1, t2 where t1.number = t2.number (although the name "join" feels more like "union" rather than "intersect") another solution seems to be select * from t1 INTERSECT select * from t2 but it is not supported in MySQL. Are there different ways to get the intersection besides these two methods?

    Is there a way to detect a finger's non-movement by using a combination of UITouch events? The event methods touchesEnded and touchesCancelled are only fired when the event is cancelled or the finger lifted. I would like to know when a touch has stopped moving, even while it is still touching the screen.

    Hi, I'm wondering if there's any way to merge two cursors together and then resort them. I can easily merge two cursors together by using a MergedCursor, but that doesn't sort them. I have two sets of contacts in two separate cursors (with totally different schemas) and I want to merge them and sort them by name (the name column is different in the two cursors).
