  I have renamed Windows Server 2008 R2 with all the steps using rendom,repadmin,gpupdate and successfully updated domain. My windows vista and above client got updated new domain when restarted. • "Busy" icon not spinning in Windows 7

  Hi there, I just got a new Sony Vaio with pre-installed Windows 7 and I noticed that the busy icon (that is, that little blue wheel that stays next to the mouse pointer when Windows is processing something) doesn't spin, ever. Does anyone know what could cause this, or how to fix it? • Help me a routing server on Windows XP

  I am developing client/server applications and need to test them on Internet environment. However, I only have one PC without connecting the public internet, so I have a plan to simulate a virtual internet environment on my PC. I think I will install the virtual machines for my purpose, but I can install only one machine because of my slowly PC. At the moment, my PC has 2 machines: the host machine (use Windows XP) & the virtual machine (use Windows Server 2003 Ent). Each machine will have 2 network adapter (host-only & internal), and in 2 network adapters, the internal adapter is private on each machine, and host-only adapters are connected together. With Windows 2003, routing server is ok, but I wonder on Windows XP, are there any routing server product? Please help me. Thanks.

  I'm not entirely sure this is the right place for the is question but I cannot think of another so here goes. In order to login to the windows machines at my office one must press the almighty CTRL-ALT-DELETE command combo first. I, finding this very frustrating, decided to look into why and found claims from both my sys and Microsoft stating that it's a security feature and that "Because only windows could read the CTRL-ALT-DELETE it helped to ensure that an automated program cannot log in. Now I'm not a master of the windows operating system ( as I generally use *nix ) but I cannot believe that "Only windows can send that signal" bull. It just doesn't sit right. Is there a good reason for the CTRL-ALT-DELETE to login thing? is it something I'm missing? or is it another example of antiquated legacy security measures?

• Options for installing software on Amazon EC2 Windows instances

  I've been running Linux servers on Amazon EC2 for a while now; the experience has been great. I've recently needed to bring up a Windows server to run some Windows-only software that our product needs to use, and am running into a problem figuring out how to install the software, which is only available on DVD. With Linux I can just install packages from a Web-based repository and take advantage of EC2's fast network throughput, but so far on the Windows instance I've had to upload my ISO images to EC2 and mount them from the Windows EC2 instance. For some reason I'm getting really slow upload speeds to EC2, even though the regular upload speed from our office is pretty good (around 7Mbps). I've also tried mounting the DVD drive on my machine as a local drive on the EC2 instance via Remote Desktop, and then running the software install from the local drive, but I run into the same slow upload speed issue. Does anyone have a better way to install software from physical media onto an EC2 instance ?

  Hi All, Does anyone experience this problem of corrupted .WAR file after it has been copied over the network share ? this is .WAR file (Web Archive) the J2EE application file (.WAR file is compressed with the same zip algorithm i think ?) Scenario 1: Windows Server 2008 x64 transfer into Windows XP using RDP client (Local Devices and Resources) Scenario 2: Windows XP 32 bit transfer into Windows Server 2003 x64 using shared network drive (port 445 SMB ?) for both of the scenario it always failed / corrupted (the source code seems to be duplicated at the end of line when you open up in the Eclipse / Java IDE). but when in both scenario i compressed the file into .ZIP file everything is OK. can anyone explains why this problem happens ? • Windows 7 Loading speed

  I have installed Windows 7 64-bit about two week ago. Since then everything was working alright, but yesterday Windows started to load much slower. Main delay comes while Windows logo is glowing -- it used to be around 10-15 seconds and now it's around 2 minutes. As far as I remember, I have only installed Microsoft IntelliMouse driver recently and removed it today. Unfortunately I found out that I have switched off System Restore some time long ago, so can't even test if the problem can be fixed by restoring old version. How can I troubleshoot the problem? Can I somehow find out what's causing the delay? P.S. Please don't suggest to reinstall Windows. I know that will help, but reinstalling all software and settings is a pain and requires a lot of time.

  I have been running Windows 7 RC1 since it was available a couple of months ago and had no issues whatsoever until today. When I start my laptop, Windows does not boot but instead Windows System Recovery starts. I've used diskpart to list the partitions on the drive and my system partition (c:) has a RAW filesystem. I really need to save all data on the disk as fast as I cant and I would really like not to have to reinstall my system.

• Automated software installation for MS Windows?

  I am currently setting up a Windows development environment (the whole Visual Studio 2010 stack plus plugins on top of Windows 7). This has got me wondering whether there's a Windows equivalent to what I do for dev environment setup in Ubuntu. It takes literally hours to get a dev environment set up in Windows, involving a lot of manual intervention. On Ubuntu, I have two shell scripts - one I run as root which configures the system using apt-get (amongst other things), one I run as me which configures my user account. Those scripts live in my private Subversion repository. To set up a dev environment from scratch requires five commands: sudo apt-get install -y subversion svn co http://svn.XXXX.XXX/personal/ cd personal sudo ./ubuntu_setup_root.sh ./ubuntu_setup_user.sh The only human intervention required is to pick a root password for MySQL. So it takes only a few minutes of human attention to go from a vanilla Ubuntu installation to a full development environment with the latest builds of everything, perfectly tailored down to shortcut keys and wallpaper. Is there an equivalent process for Windows? In an ideal world it'd be something trivially scriptable using C# Script or Powershell, which could live in source control & make use of a repository of ISOs downloaded from MSDN ...

  I'm trying to setup a home network between a windows 7 and windows xp machine. I have a small hub. My XP computer has a manually assigned IP address (192.168.0.10) and I set my Windows 7 machine to have a manually assigned IP address (192.168.0.15). The XP computer works, but the Windows 7 machine does not see the network. It says that there is no connectivity. Ping does not work from either machine. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• It takes a long time until Windows XP recognize I connected USB drive

  I have a problem with my new USB disk. When I connect it to my laptop with Windows XP SP2 it takes about 4-5min until Windows recognizes it and shows it as a new disk. I can also see (disk's LED is blinking) that something is scanning the disk when I connect it; when this is done Windows immediately recognize it. Also when I'm copying data to this disk the speed is about 3.5MB/sec. It's connected using USB2.0. I tried to check for spyware (using Spybot), also tried running Windows in safe mode. But still have the same problems. Do you have any idea what could help to solve this problem? On Windows Vista (another laptop) everything is ok, disk loads in about 15sec and speed is about 20-30MB/sec. Edit: I tried to update to SP3 - no change Edit2: When this "strange" scanning occurs I can see that DPCs process is taking about 50% of CPU. When the scan ends (after 5min) this process take 0% again. Edit3: About the scan time, currently it's taking about 5min, but this time is growing as I'm adding more data to the disk, currently its about 40GB and I don't want to see how long it will take with 1000GB. • IEEE 1394 Firewire Card is not visible in Device Manager in WIndows 7

  I have a IEEE 1394 card that I have placed in one of the PCI slots of my Windows 7 PC. I have moved to Windows just last week and Windows is not detecting this card. It is not listed in the Devide Manager. Earlier when I used Fedora 12, I was able to use this interface for capturing videos from my DV Camera. The manufacturer is Tech-Com, which has not provided a driver CD for this. What can I possibly try?

• Mac OS X: All bootcamp options start Windows

  I just installed the latest security update on Mac OS X (installed on 2-10-2010). On restart my Mac booted in Windows 7, which I had installed previously and was set not to boot by default. I tried to restart holding the alt key, and selected the Mac OS X partition, but still the Windows 7 partition boots. It does not matter what partition I choose, Windows 7 always boots. I took a look in the OS X partition and noticed that the admin home folder is empty, or at least Windows is not showing any files there. There is another user on OS X and I can see their files no problem. This has me stumped, has anyone any suggestions for a finding a solution?

• Fix MBR from installed Windows Vista

  Hi guys, I have a quite strange problem. I had a system with Vista and Ubuntu installed. We always use Vista and Ubuntu was something we really did not need. BUT: to boot, GRUB was used (I guess grub2). Now, while being in Vista I cancelled the Ubuntu partition and with it also GRUB. Now the system does not boot anymore. I tried to reinstall Ubuntu, but I had some problems with the CD. At the moment, when the system boots I get into the GRUB shell. From there, I am able to boot Windows Vista with some commands like this ones: grub> title windows rootnoverify (hd0,msdos3) chainloader +1 boot Now the question is: if I am able to boot in Windows Vista with this trick, is it possible to fix the MBR from inside the installed windows Vista with some command/tool of Vista itself? I shall probably mention that we are not interested in double boot at the moment. We only want Vista to start. I can sum up the question like this: is there a way to fix the MBR from the installed version on Windows Vista, considering that GRUB is at the moment installed? I hope I was clear enough.   Hi guys, I try to share a specific directory to my windows 7 computer, but I want it to use a specific user that I created on my mac to connect to it. I saw this tutorial: http://www.trickyways.com/2010/06/how-to-access-mac-files-from-windows-7/ wich is exactly what I want to do, but it ain't working. For some reason, it never prompts me for username/password when I try to connect on my mac when I'm on Windows 7. On top of that, when I set the permission "No Access" to the "Everyone" user on my mac, my windows computer simply don't see the directory. If I set the permission to "Read/Write" or "Read only" it works. I simply don't want that everyone in my workgroup to be able to read my files. I want to create specific users on my mac and share them to the persons I want... Any thoughts?

  This occurred after a Trojan incident. We managed to get the Trojan cleaned off the computer, but now we can't Right click the desktop. We have tried changing HKCU/software/microsoft/windows/current version/policies/explorer/noviewcontextmenu in the registry, and group policy user configuration/administrative templates/windows explorer/remove windows explorers default context menu, but neither worked. How do we reenable the right-click menu for the desktop? (it works everywhere else)

  Main question is what I am doing wrong in my OpenSwan or L2TP client setup? I am trying to create a Linux OpenSwan VPN connection from Windows XP machine, using preshared key and the builtin Windows XP L2TP IPsec option. I have followed the instructions in Linux Home networking Wiki for setting up OpenSwan and a guide to making it work with the Windows XP client, but am now stuck. The net setup is as follows: [my windows client, private IP A]<->[f/wall B]<-internet->[g/w X]<->[Linux OpenSwan server Y] A - private subnet /24 B - internet address X - internet address /24 Y - internet address on same subnet as X What I essentially want is for computer with A address to feel and work, as if it was in X subnet for purposes of outgoing and incoming TCP and UDP connections. My OpenSwan setup is as follows: /etc/ipsec.conf (AAA and YYY indicates ip address parts of A and Y addresses): conn net-to-net authby=secret left=B leftsubnet=AAA.AAA.AAA.0/24 leftnexthop=%defaultroute right=Y rightsubnet=YYY.YYY.YYY.0/24 rightnexthop=B auto=start the secret in /etc/ipsec.secrets is listed as: B Y : PSK "0xMysecretkey" where B & Y stand for respective IP adresses of gateway B and linux server Y My L2TP WinXP setup is: IP of destination: Y don't prompt for username security options: typical, require secured pass, don't require data encryption, IPSec PSK set to 0xMysecretkey networking options: VPN Type: L2TP IPSec VPN; TCPIP protocol (with automatic IP address assignment) and QOS packet schedulers enabled The error I get from Windows client is 789: "error during initial negotiation"

• Group Policy Software Installs Too Silent on Windows 7

  I'm trying to migrate a Windows XP deployment process to Windows 7. The process has been surprisingly smooth, after figuring out how to bring up a base system. We rely heavily on Group Policy software installation, which in XP can mean long periods on any given morning sitting around watching the machine install new updates. At least the typical Windows Installer message shows the user that something is indeed happening. As far as I can tell, Windows 7 retains the startup installation process (good), but eliminates the on-screen message to indicate what's happening (bad). All a user will see, possibly for a half-hour or more if they haven't restarted for a while, is the electric hamster wheel and the words "Please wait...". I forsee a significant increase in support calls... If you're familiar with msiexec.exe parameters, XP behaves like /qb-, and 7 behaves like /qn. I want the /qb- behavior back. Is there a way to re-enable the Windows Installer notices for Group Policy startup installations?

• Cannot find "IIS APPPOOL\{application pool name}" user account in Windows Server 2008

  Normally when setting up IIS 7, I'm used to allowing permissions to user IIS APPPOOL\{application pool name} on the root folder of my web application(s). I also give permissions to IUSR (or the IIS_IUSRS user group. (Note, in Windows Server 2008, I found that IUSR isn't in that group by default, so I added it). In Windows Server 2008, I cannot find user IIS APPPOOL\{application pool name} under Security under the Windows Folder Properties. I'm using Windows Authentication in ASP.NET. I'm receiving a 401.1 on the page in Internet Explorer 8 after getting the authentication prompt. Mozilla Firefox also gave me a Windows authentication prompt, and got me into the site fine. Same with Google Chrome. How can I solve this one? HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.   Hi, I am trying to setup a secure vpn server (Ipsec l2tp) on windows so I can connect to it using my mobile mac or any other windows pc. It seems it is quite a hassle to do this. Does anyone have any good suggestions, maybe a software or open source. Note that I have not yet encountered a piece of ware that can run on both windows and mac.
