• Which tools you use to make gtk themes?

  I'm trying to make a new gtk theme using the murrine engine, using Humanity (default in ubuntu 9.10) as a template. You can grab the code in http://github.com/tutuca/themes However, I found cumbersome the process of creating a new theme with it. There is no central starting point. The documentation of both, the engine options (gtkrc's and stuff), and general theming practices (the format of the index.theme files, folders, bla bla) is scarce, How to's and tutorials are often old or subject to lots of opinionated debate and results confusing (to me, having a web developer background, at least :-). So... I wanted to ask to the fellows gtk themers and artist out there: Which tools you use to create a new theme, and how does your average workflow looks like?

• SQL Server Management Studio won’t shutdown

  Ever find that SQL Server Management Studio just won’t shutdown. This often happens if you log off and find that Management Studio is blocking the shutdown. If you click on Management Studio it just beebs at you. Well the problem is likely to be the help viewer, and this happens more on new installs. • Ubuntu 12.10 AMD/Intel Hybrid Graphics not working

  On Ubuntu 12.04 my Sony Vaio VPCSE with Intel® HD Graphics 3000 and AMD Radeon™ HD 6630M worked fine with the Catalyst Control Center version 12.6. Also the switching between integrated and discrete graphic card was working. In both cases, I followed this tutorial. But it is not working on Ubuntu 12.10. I tested the tutorial with the Catalyst Control Center from the Ubuntu Software Center, the version 12.8 and version 12.9. Always the same problem: After installation process I am able to boot in the login-screen. But after entering the password for my username, only the background-image appears. Unity seems not to be starting. I am only able to reach the context-menu by right clicking the mouse button. I also tried his fix, but is also does not work for me. Any ideas what to do to fix this problem?

• Inspecting the model in a Rails application

  I am learning some Ruby on Rails, and am a newbie. Most of my background is in ASP.net MVC on the back end. As I play with a basic scaffold project, I wonder about this case: you jump into an established Rails project and want to get to know the model. Based on what I have seen so far (again, simple scaffold), the properties for a given class are not immediately revealed. I don't see property accessors on the model classes. I do understand that this is because of the dynamic nature of Ruby and such things are not necessary or even perhaps desirable. Convention over code, I get that. (Am familiar with dynamic concepts, mostly via JS.) But if I am somewhere off in a view, and want to quickly know whether the (eg) Person object has a MiddleName property, how would I find that out? I don't have to go into the migrations, do I?

Every sentence is twice as long. I installed the Inconsolata font and I have the same config on my windows 7 box and it works fine.

• Does google contribute ranking from cdn.example.com to example.com?

  Background From my understanding, http://mywebsite.com/image.jpg, can help the ranking of http://mywebsite.com in a search engine, such as Google (obviously the search engine of primary concern). So, SEO-wise, moving an image to http://whatever-cdn.com/my-account/image.jpg is bad. A popular solution is to use a CNAME record, such as http://cdn.mywebsite.com, so that image.jpg can be accessed at http://cdn.mywebsite.com/image.jpg. The question Does http://cdn.mywebsite.com/image.jpg rank as effectively as http://mywebsite.com/image.jpg ? Does it help boost the main http://mywebsite.com ? Or, does it rank independently because it is a subdomain? Is there another option (a way to use a CDN without sacrificing ranking)?

• Asus Eee PC 701 4G hangs on boot

  I've got an old Eee PC 701 4G with the following specifications: 512 MB RAM 4GB SSD drive SM223AC 8GB SD card extension Screen resolution: 800 x 480 BIOS Revision 1101 (05/16/2008) EC Firmware version: EPC-079 Windows XP SP3 works fine on it, but I decided to switch my OS to Ubuntu. I have downloaded an Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix ISO and wrote it to my FAT32 SD card using Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.3, as described on ubuntu.com During standard load from the SD card the boot process hangs up with black screen. If I'll press F6 while preloading Ubuntu, it sucessfully displays the boot menu, selecting language and showing 2 main commands: "Run ubuntu from USB drive" and "Install Ubuntu". Selecting either of these commands leading to the same result - after some background work the main loading indicator is displayed ("Ubuntu" text with dotted progress bar under it), and it's progressing forever without any effect. Is Ubuntu 10.10 compatible with my Eee PC at all? How to boot it correctly?

• Using automated bdd-gui-tests to keep user-documentation-screenshots up do date?

  Are there developpers out there, who (ab)use the CaptureScreenshot() function of their automated gui-tests to also create uptodate-screenshots for the userdocumentation? Background: Whithin the lifetime of an application, its gui-elements are constantly changing. It makes a lot of work to keep the userdocumentation uptodate, especially if the example data in the pictures should match the textual description. If you already have automated bdd-gui-tests why not let them take screenshots at certain points? I am currently playing with webapps in dotnet+specflow+selenium, but this topic also applies to other bdd-engines (JRuby-Cucumber, mspec, rspec, ...) and gui-test-Frameworks (WaitN, WaitR, MsWhite, ....) Any experience, thoughts or url-links to this topic would be helpfull. How is the cost/benefit relation? Is it worth the efford? What are the Drawbacks? • Console 2: An upgraded windows console

  Lately I have been using the windows console a lot. I find that I often need a number of console windows open at once. The regular windows console does not handle this well. Console2 is a more advanced console for windows. It has a tabbed interface and a number of other nice features. It supports alpha transparency if you have Mac envy, it has improved text selection and copy/paste and it is far more customizable than the default console. • Actor based concurrency and cancellation

  I'm reading about actor based concurrency and I appreciate the simplicity of actors sequentially processing messages on a single thread. However there is one scenario that doesn't seen possible. Suppose that actor A sends a message to actor B, who then performs some long running task and returns a completion message to actor A. How can actor A force actor B to cancel the long running task after it has started? If actor B is running the task in its message queue thread, it won't pick up the cancellation message until it had completed the task; if actor B runs the task in a background thread then it seems to be violating the principle of actors. Is there a common way that this scenario is handled with actors? Or does each actor language/framework take a different approach? Or is this not a suitable problem to tackle via actors?

  I know it is goofy to geek out about such things, but I am a pretty goofy geek.  Today we published support for the Apple icons for devices like the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.  Now when you add Geekswithblogs.net to your home screen (via the little + in Safari) it will load the icon to the left instead of a screenshot of the site.  We have been using my iPhone and iPad to surf to GWB for awhile and we were tired of that screenshot.  Simple Google/Bing search and a little Photoshop CS5 (Amazing!!!) work and there it is.  Next step we are taking in the Apple iPad/Phone arena is getting our developer kit and seeing what possiblities there are for Geekswithblogs.net and a custom App.  Got any ideas? Here is a shot of my iPad 3G: Also, would anyone be interested in a Geekswithblogs.net custom background for the iPhone or iPad?  I can put something together real quick if there are any takers.

• Would a professional, self taught programmer benefit from reading an algorithms book?

  I'm a 100% self taught, professional programmer (I've worked at a few web startups and made a few independent games). I've read quite a few of the "essential" books (Clean Code, The Pragmatic Programmer, Code Complete, SICP, K&R). I'm considering reading Introduction to Algorithms. I've asked a few colleagues if reading it will improve my programming skills, and I got very mixed answers. A few said yes, a few said no, and a one said "only if you spend a lot of time implementing these algorithms" (I don't). So, I figured I'd ask Stack Exchange. Is it worth the time to read about algorithms if you're a professional programmer who seldom needs to use complex algorithms? For what it's worth, I have a strong mathematical background (have a 2 year degree in Mathematics; took Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Calc I-III).

Of course many existing games do this (halo for example), but I was interested in any resources/papers/articles talking about the techniques to develop a system like this.   Till recently my development workflow was the following: Get the feature from product owner Make a branch (if feature is more than 1 day) Implement it in a branch Merge changes from main branch to my branch (to reduce conflicts during backward merging) Merge my branch back to main branch Sometimes there were problems with merging, but in general I liked it. But recently I see more and more followers of idea to not make branches as it makes more difficult to practice continuous integration, continuous delivery, etc. And it sounds especially funny from people with distributed VCS background who were talking so much about great merging implementations of Git, Mercurial, etc. So the question is should we use branches nowadays?

  Would you try to persuade your client that using object-oriented programming is much cleaner? Or would you try to follow what he required and give him crappy code? Now I am writing a program to simulate the activity of ants in a grid. The ant can move around, pick up things and drop things. The problem is while the action of the ants and the positions of each ant can be tracked by class attributes easily (and we can easily create many instances of such ants) my client said that since he has a background in functional programming he would like the simulation to be made using functional programming. • Dark themes in IDE with multiple monitors [closed]

  There has been numerous posts about developers that prefer a dark color scheme in their IDE. Most of the themes at studiostyl.es are dark themes. Back when I had a single monitor, I did enjoy using a dark theme since it was easier on the eyes. But now that I utilize multiple monitors, I find dark themes actually hurt my eyes. Most of the time I have my IDE open on one monitor and a browser/email/documentation open on my other monitors. Only my IDE has a dark theme and most of websites/documentation have a white background. This forces my eyes to constantly adjust between my dark IDE and the white website, which puts strain on my eyes. I'm sure I'm not the only person who tries to use a dark theme for the IDE and have multiple monitors. How do other people deal with this issue?

• Ubuntu 12.04 Can't Login-Tty Console said: -bash: /usr/bin/byobu/-launch: no such file or directory

  I face problem in login to Ubuntu 12.04. I think it's caused by accessing super user (if not wrong). I type sudo nautilus to put a background to burg, but i fail x_x. After reboot, i can't login to desktop. But i can login as guest. I had 'googling' for problem solving. Most of it is login to screen like terminal (maybe tty console) by pressing ctrl+alt+F1. But after i login system says: -bash: /usr/bin/byobu/-launch: no such file or directory help help help :(

• High contrast theme Firefox problem

  I am using the high contrast inverse theme in 12.04 as I am visually impaired. This generally works great but causes a problem in Firefox as entered text e.g into a Google search is white. As the text background is also white you cannot see what you are typing. I have read through a good thirty websites with similar issues but thus far nothing works. I have tried all the settings in Firefox like un-checking "Use System Defaults" as well as manually telling Firefox what colours to use and these setting have absolutely no effect on anything.

  Background Mapping reference data is one of the common scenarios in BizTalk development and its usually a bit of a pain when you need to manage a lot of reference data whether it be through the BizTalk Cross Referencing features or some kind of custom solution. I have seen many cases where only a couple of the mapping conditions are ever tested. Approach As usual I like to see these things tested in isolation before you start using them in your BizTalk maps so you know your mapping functions are working as expected. This approach can be used for almost all of your reference data type mapping functions where you can take advantage of MSTests data driven tests to test lots of conditions without having to write millions of tests. • How is the iOS support in UDK compared to Unity?

  I have some significant experience in Unity for web clients, but I'm skeptical about the 3K$ price tag to create/deploy iOS games. I noticed UDK now supports iOS, and appears to have "free" version control- and it's only 100$ from what I can tell. My primary question is: Does UDK make iOS development and deployment easy, or do you have to jump through a couple of hoops to make it work? A few side questions not worth another post: How hard is the transition from Unity to UDK? Is UnrealScript easy to pick up from a C/C# background? Does the UDK have good documentation compared to Unity?

  I wanted to know how to customize the splash screen in Ubuntu 13. I have tried to install Plymouth Manager but when I run sudo apt-get update it says it was unable to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/mefrio-g/plymouthmanager/ubuntu/dists/raring/main/binary-i386/Packages. I opened the address in Firefox but it didn't open. Also I would like to know where the files for the Ubuntu Logo, Splash Screen Background, etc. are located (to customize them). In previous versions they were located at usr/share/images. I am running Ubuntu 13 Raring Ringtail on VMWare Player. The host is an Acer 5600U running Windows 8. Thnx.

• Oracle Usability Advisory Board, Europe

  Earlier this month, I attended the first Oracle Usability Advisory Board meeting in Europe (held in Oracle's big campus in Thames Valley Park, Reading, in the UK). My main interest here of of course was to listen to customer's experiences and requirements in the area of user experience, focusing in on user assistance natch, but also, given my background in the translation and internationalization world, to watch out for issues in those areas that impact on the UX. I met some great people there and took away some powerful UX thoughts about where might go with the area of language in the UI, localizations, and other cultural issues. One area of special interest to me is language as part of the user experience. By language I mean terminology and style of wordings you see in interfaces and help. Are they reflective of how people really work and are used to. What is its relationship to competitiveness and productivity. An area rich in research potential for UX.
