• How to recover zfs pool when root fs fails?

  I have a FreeBSD 8.0 amd64 box w/ 1 ATA drive for system root and 4 SATA drives as a RAIDZ pool. The ATA drive isn't mirrored nor part of any pool, but also doesn't hold any valuable data (other then the system). How can I recover my zpool if this ATA drive fails for any reason, but assume my RAIDZ vdev SATA drives remain intact? Should I also use at least a mirror configuration for that?

• Have optical drive connectors changed in the last year?

  In early 2010 my motherboard freaked out, and I was able to drop in a new board and connect my two DVD drives that were initially bought in 2005. Tonight my new components arrived to build my next system, and I figured I'd just reuse the old DVD drives. Surprise, the long flat connector cable has no mate on the new motherboard. Reckon I'll just pick up a new DVD drive for $25, but what gives? Thanks!

• How can I access my external hard drive wirelessly from my laptop?

  My desktop crashed so I am migrated over to a laptop. I have wireless in my home so i am trying to be able to use to laptop in any room without any other connections (wireless printer, wireless mouse, etc) The one issue i have is that my desktop had 2 external hard drives (USB) connected to them and i am trying to figure out the best way to treat these as external drives without having to plug them into the laptop directly. • Flexbuilder won't launch...arrrgh!

  In a panic since I'm trying to meet a deadline so appreciate any feedback on this. For some reason, Flexbuilder 3 on my mac won't launch, crashes on startup. I've never experienced this before. Checked the .log file and what seems to be the problem is the following /Users/foo/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#Security/FlashPlayerTrust/flexbuilder.fbr (No such file or directory) WTF is the flexbuilder.fbr??? Googled but not much luck. The only thing I've done that might have caused this is change flash player versions system wide using the official flash player uninstaller...but obviously this should not happen Any feedback appreciated...

• Vista/7 UAC: how to lower process privileges

  Hi all, Is it possible for a process to lower itself from elevated UAC permission back to standard user? If not can the elevated process launch its copy with standard user token and then kill itself? Any code examples (C# preferred)? Details: Problem: - user installs my product (written in C#) - the installer elevates its UAC permission to admin - at the end the installer launches my exe - the exe inherits elevated permissions from admin - the exe mounts network drives which become invisible in Windows Explorer (that runs with regular permissions) Options I considered: 1) break installer into outer exe and inner exe, that runs with elevated permission. The install consists of 1000+ lines of NSIS code and I don't know anything about NSIS 2) mounting drives with lower permissions. If I do it Win Explorer can see the drives but my exe cannot 3) setting EnableLinkedConnection registry option to 1. This is a no-go because it requires PC reboot during the installation. Please help! Sergey

• Flex HTTPService security error using Safari

  I'm using the HTTPService object in actionscript to send some data to a php file on another server which then inserts the data to a database. I set up the crossdomain.xml file in the root of the directory that contains the php file to get around any security issues. Everything works fine on Firfox 3.5 (on mac and pc) and on IE 7 & 8. When testing on Safari 4 I get an error which would be expected when a crossdomain.xml doesn't exist. • Flex RSL Understanding

  Till now I was using "Merged into code" for "Framework Linkage" in Flex Builder. Now, I changed it to "Runtime shared library". On doing a release build I got myapp.swf which is roughly 260 KB which was earlier close to 350 KB. It also generated framework.swz and framework.swf. But I copied only myapp.swf on my web site and not framework.swz. Still the website works just fine. I also cleared the flash player cache from here. It works just fine without the .swz file. So my questions are: Is the framework.swz file actually used or does the flash player have a copy of it beforehand. And is that copy not cleared by clearing cache of flash player? And, even after clearing the cache, I didn't see a request for framework.swz in firebug. Why?

• Let system time determine animation speed, not program FPS

  I'm writing a card game in ActionScript 3. Each card is represented by an instance of a class extending movieclip exported from Flash CS4 that contains the card graphics and a flip animation. When I want to flip a card I call gotoAndPlay on this movieclip. When the frame rate slows down all animations take longer to finish. It seems Flash will by default animate movieclips in a way that makes sure all frames in the clip will be drawn. Therefor, when the program frame rate goes below the frame rate of the clip, the animation will be played at a slower pace. I would like to have an animation always play at the same speed and as a consequence always be shown on the screen for the same amount of time. If the frame rate is too slow to show all frames, frames are dropped. Is is possible to tell Flash to animate in this way? If not, what is the easiest way to program this behavior myself?

  Like many web developers I'm looking forward to streaming video that utilizes the new HTML 5 <video> tag. Browser support definitely isn't wide enough yet, so using a Flash/SWF fallback is a must. This got me thinking: in Flash it's possible to highly customize the playback controls (pause, play, stop, seek, volume, etc.) in HTML 5?. What options are there for customizing the glyphs, icons and colors of video controls? Is Javascript required?   I'm a photographer and I have a requirement find a better method of storing my photos other than multiple USB2 drives via USB hubs. Currently I use a Macbook Pro and 6 external drives connected via USB2 or FW800. 3 are a copy of the first three, kept up to day manually by running an rsync backup. I'd like to run a FreeNAS or OpenFiler NAS box using 2TB drives mirrored via software RAID. But - I would like to have the flexibility of also plugging into the drive physically for the faster throughput when necessary. So. My question is, is there a file system that both *nix and Mac OSX will play nice with? Many thanks, Chris.

• How do I refresh TinyMCE for the code that I add with JavaScript

  Hi, I need to insert code for flash to TinyMCE with JavaScript. If I insert the same code using HTML menu of TinyMCE, it automatically add flash icon to the editor. But if I insert the code using JavaScript, the actual code is inserted but it shows nothing on the screen. One trick I found is toggle TinyMCE to normal textarea and back to TinyMCE. Then, it shows the flash icon. Is there a better way to do that? Thanks. Sam

My question is, how secure is this?   I am looking at an embedded system where secrets are stored in flash that is internal to the chip package, and there is no physical interface to get that information out - all access to this flash is policed by program code. All DMA attacks and JTAG and such are disabled. This seems to be a common locked-down configuration for system-on-a-chip. How might an attacker recover the secrets in that Flash? I understand they can fuzz for vulnerabilities in the app code and exploit it, that there could be some indistinct general side channel attack or something. But how would an attacker really go about trying to recover those keys? Are there viable approaches for a determined attacker to somehow shave-down the chip or some kind of microscope attack?

• AS3 Camera denied if loaded in a parent SWF

  Hi, I have a child SWF file that has the Camera functionality. It works fine if I run the child SWF by itself. However, when I load the child SWF into a parent SWF, the Camera functionality does not work. Doing some tracing it says that Camera access is denied. That happens without me even clicking on the deny button and in fact the usual security popup does not even show up. I have added import flash.system.Security; flash.system.Security.allowDomain("*"); to both parent and child SWF. What am I missing? It's Flash 10 player. Thank you, Tee

• Online webcam chat. Free server and easy-to-implement client?

  I have a client requesting that his users can use their webcams to talk to each other. From what I've understood the main thing to use for this is Flash. However as I have not written flash I would like to have something really easy to implement. Of course preferrably free (or trial). The idea of this is that everything but the chat alone is in .net. So the users will not use flash until they are actaully going to talk to each other. So there is no use for rooms here. I've been looking into silverlight some as well. But it seems like silverlight does not offer streaming between users..? I know this question has been asked many times here. But I could not find a suitable answer which is why I post a new question.

  I'm trying to add some video playback (that will be used for a tutorial) to my Adobe Air application. I'm not a Flex or Flash developer and my application is HTML/Javascript based, so I'm having trouble with some of the video solutions I've been able to find. Here is one of the examples I've found that is flex based: Playing local files with Air I've looked for a free flash video player that I could just embed. But the only one I've found I was unable to coerce to play files from my Air application directory. I was exited at the prospect of using the HTML5 video tag which I thought Air supported, but that also seems to not work. Can anyone recommend a free flash video player that I can embed? Or a solution that doesn't have to be built completely from flex?

I wanna create a usb driver, so my own C application be able to get into my flash drive and take information from the imported flash drive. OS: Windows Please don't close it again I still cant find my answer... more details I start my app/which contains my USB driver/ i plug-in my flash and its shows in Explorer that this drive is plugged and it is accessible, while that's happening, my app is checking that file data.txt EXIST if that file exist, program run next function, if not program, my program runs down/exit/! I hope that this helps understanding my idea...
