  • How to select the top n from a union of two queries where the resulting order needs to be ranked by individual query?

    - by Jedidja
Let's say I have a table with usernames: Id | Name ----------- 1 | Bobby 20 | Bob 90 | Bob 100 | Joe-Bob 630 | Bobberino 820 | Bob Junior I want to return a list of n matches on name for 'Bob' where the resulting set first contains exact matches followed by similar matches. I thought something like this might work SELECT TOP 4 a.* FROM ( SELECT * from Usernames WHERE Name = 'Bob' UNION SELECT * from Usernames WHERE Name LIKE '%Bob%' ) AS a but there are two problems: It's an inefficient query since the sub-select could return many rows (looking at the execution plan shows a join happening before top) (Almost) more importantly, the exact match(es) will not appear first in the results since the resulting set appears to be ordered by primary key. I am looking for a query that will return (for TOP 4) Id | Name --------- 20 | Bob 90 | Bob (and then 2 results from the LIKE query, e.g. 1 Bobby and 100 Joe-Bob) Is this possible in a single query?

  • Database design for very large amount of data

    - by Hossein
Hi, I am working on a project, involving large amount of data from the delicious website. The data available is at files are "Date,UserId,Url,Tags" (for each bookmark). I normalized my database to a 3NF, and because of the nature of the queries that we wanted to use In combination I came down to 6 tables....The design looks fine, however, now a large amount of data is in the database, most of the queries needs to "join" at least 2 tables together to get the answer, sometimes 3 or 4. At first, we didn't have any performance issues, because for testing matters we haven't had added too much data in the database. No that we have a lot of data, simply joining extremely large tables does take a lot of time and for our project which has to be real-time is a disaster.I was wondering how big companies solve these issues.Looks like normalizing tables just adds complexity, but how does the big company handle large amounts of data in their databases, don't they do the normalization? thanks

  • IE6 Hacks: Getting jQuery tools expose to work properly on my site

    - by Wild Thing
Hi, I am trying to get the jQuery tools 'expose' function to work properly in IE6. The page is http://204.51.246.10:12123/ You will need IE6 to reproduce the bug (obviously :)). If you click 'Sign In' on the top-right corner (below the 'Join Today!' button), you will notice that the sign in panel (fieldset#login-controls) is getting covered by the background of its parent element (.signinPanel), which is very weird. It is not on the top of z-index, and I can't figure out why. Please note that in order to get fieldset#login-controls positioned correctly, I have applied the following hack for IE6: $("#header, #header div, #header table, #header td, #header tr").css("position", "static"); $("fieldset#login-controls *").css("position", "static"); This might be the reason for the above. I am pretty lost at this point, as I can't figure what's going on - any advise would be appreciated. Cheers, Wild Thing

  • Google App Engine (python): TemplateSyntaxError: 'for' statements with five words should end in 'rev

    - by Phil
This is using the web app framework, not Django. The following template code is giving me an TemplateSyntaxError: 'for' statements with five words should end in 'reversed' error when I try to render a dictionary. I don't understand what's causing this error. Could somebody shed some light on it for me? {% for code, name in charts.items %} <option value="{{code}}">{{name}}</option> {% endfor %} I'm rendering it using the following: class GenerateChart(basewebview): def get(self): values = {"datepicker":True} values["charts"] = {"p3": "3D Pie Chart", "p": "Segmented Pied Chart"} self.render_page("generatechart.html", values) class basewebview(webapp.RequestHandler): ''' Base class for all webapp.RequestHandler type classes ''' def render_page(self, filename, template_values=dict()): filename = "%s/%s" % (_template_dir, filename) path = os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__), filename) self.response.out.write(template.render(path, template_values))

  • Ruby Iconv works with irb and ruby debugger but not in a unit test

    - by Mark B
I'm running Ruby 1.8.7 with Rails 2.3.5 on Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. I've written a method that should take a string like this, "École À la Découverte" and output a file-system name like this "ecole_a_la_decouverte": (Iconv.new('US-ASCII//TRANSLIT', 'utf-8').iconv "École À la Découverte").gsub(/[^\w\s-\—]/,'').gsub(/[^\w]|[_]/,' ').split.join('_').downcase When I test this line in my code, the test always fails saying that "cole_la_dcouverte" is unequal to "ecole_a_la_decouverte". The odd thing is that if I insert a debugger line and use the debugger console the test passes. As well, running this line manually in irb seems to work. Does anyone know what's going on and why this test is failing? My only thought is that including the debugger or irb somehow adds more support for UTF-8 but I'm at a loss to figure out where to go next. Thanks in advance!

  • Send an email using python script

    - by nimmyliji
Hi, Today I needed to send email from a Python script. As always I searched Google and found the following script that fits to my need. import smtplib SERVER = "localhost" FROM = "[email protected]" TO = ["[email protected]"] # must be a list SUBJECT = "Hello!" TEXT = "This message was sent with Python's smtplib." # Prepare actual message message = """\ From: %s To: %s Subject: %s %s """ % (FROM, ", ".join(TO), SUBJECT, TEXT) # Send the mail server = smtplib.SMTP(SERVER) server.sendmail(FROM, TO, message) server.quit() But when I tried to run the program, I got the following error message: Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:/Python26/email.py", line 1, in <module> import smtplib File "C:\Python26\lib\smtplib.py", line 46, in <module> import email.utils File "C:/Python26/email.py", line 24, in <module> server = smtplib.SMTP(SERVER) AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'SMTP' How can i solve this problem? Any one can help me? Thanks in advance, Nimmy.

  • Usng Rails ActiveRecord relationships

    - by Brian Goff
I'm a newbie programmer, been doing shell scripting for years but have recently taken on OOP programming using Ruby and am creating a Rails application. I'm having a hard time getting my head wrapped around how to use my defined model relationships. I've tried searching Google, but all I can come up with are basically cheat sheets for what has_many, belongs_to, etc all mean. This stuff is easy to define & understand, especially since I've done a lot of work directly with SQL. What I don't understand is how to actually used those defined relationships. In my case I have 3 models: Locations Hosts Services Relationships (not actual code, just for shortening it): Services belongs_to :hosts Hosts has_many :services belongs_to :locations Locations has_many :hosts In this case I want to be able to display a column from Locations while working with Services. In SQL this is a simple join, but I want to do it the Rails/Ruby way, and also not use SQL in my code or redefine my joins.

  • rails associations - How would you represent this relationship?

    - by truthSeekr
Hello All, I am trying to figure out a best way to represent the following relationship. Newspaper-->has_many-->Articles Newspaper-->has_many--->Subscribers Subscribers are allowed to save the articles for their personal page. Two Questions: 1) How would the relationship look like in rails? How would the action 'save' look like? The following using has_many does not seem right to me: ArticleController < ApplicationController def save a = Article.find(101) @user.saved_articles << a end 2) Do I need a join table Saved_Articles that looked like this? Saved_Articles ---------------- user_id, article_id I am not sure how the has_many_through works. any advice is appreciated. thanks

  • MS SQL Server 15MM rows, simple COUNT query. 15+ seconds?

    - by john
We took over a website from another company after a client decided to switch. We have a table that grows by about 25k records a day, and is currently at 15MM records. The table looks something like: id (PK, int, not null) member_id (int, not null) another_id (int, not null) date (datetime, not null) SELECT COUNT(id) FROM tbl can take up to 15 seconds. A simple inner join on 'another_id' takes over 30 seconds. I can't imagine why this is taking so long. Any advice? SQL Server 2005 Express

  • DELETING doubled users (MySQL)

    - by vizzdoom
Hi I have two tables. There are users informations from two sites: p_users p_users2 There are 3726 users in first and 13717 in second. Some users in p_users2 are in p_users. I want merge this two tables to the one big table - but rows with same usernames can't be doubled. How can I do this? I tried something like this: DELETE FROM p_users2 WHERE user_id IN ( select p.user_id from p_users p join p_users2 p2 on p.username=p2.username ) After that I should receive a table with unique usernames, which I want to export and import to the first one. But when I execute my query I got error: SQL Error (1093): You can't specify target table 'p_users2' for update in FROM clause. (MYSQL)

  • HQL to get elements that possess all items in a set

    - by Tauren
    Currently, I have an HQL query that returns all Members who possess ANY Award from a set of specified Awards: from Member m left join m.awards as a where a.name in ("Trophy","Ribbon"); What I now need is HQL that will return all Members who possess ALL Awards specified in the set of Awards. So, assuming this data: Joe has Trophy, Medal Sue has Trophy, Ribbon Tom has Trophy, Ribbon, Medal The query above would return Joe, Sue, and Tom because all three possess at least one of Trophy or Ribbon. But I need to return only Sue and Tom, because they are the only ones who possess all of the specified awards (Trophy and Ribbon). Here's the class structure (simplified): class Member { private String name; private Set<Award> awards; } class Award { private String name; }

  • Matplotlib subplots_adjust hspace so titles and xlabels don't overlap ?

    - by Denis
With say 3 rows of subplots in matplotlib, xlabels of one row can overlap the title of the next; one has to fiddle with pl.subplots_adjust( hspace ), annoying. Is there a recipe for hspace that prevents overlaps and works for any nrow ? """ matplotlib xlabels overlap titles ? """ import sys import numpy as np import pylab as pl nrow = 3 hspace = .4 # of plot height, titles and xlabels both fall within this ?? exec "\n".join( sys.argv[1:] ) # nrow= ... y = np.arange(10) pl.subplots_adjust( hspace=hspace ) for jrow in range( 1, nrow+1 ): pl.subplot( nrow, 1, jrow ) pl.plot( y**jrow ) pl.title( 5 * ("title %d " % jrow) ) pl.xlabel( 5 * ("xlabel %d " % jrow) ) pl.show() My versions: matplotlib 0.99.1.1, python 2.6.4, Mac osx 10.4.11, backend: Qt4Agg (TkAgg = Exception in Tkinter callback) (For many extra points, can anyone outline how matplotlib's packer / spacer works, along the lines of chapter 17 "the packer" in the Tcl/Tk book ?)

  • Updating records with their subordinates via CTE or subquery

    - by Mike Jolley
Let's say I have a table with the following columns: Employees Table employeeID int employeeName varchar(50) managerID int totalOrganization int managerID is referential to employeeID. totalOrganization is currently 0 for all records. I'd like to update totalOrganization on each row to the total number of employees under them. So with the following records: employeeID employeeName managerID totalOrganization 1 John Cruz NULL 0 2 Mark Russell 1 0 3 Alice Johnson 1 0 4 Juan Valdez 3 0 The query should update the totalOrganizations to: employeeID employeeName managerID totalOrganization 1 John Cruz NULL 3 2 Mark Russell 1 0 3 Alice Johnson 1 1 4 Juan Valdez 3 0 I know I can get somewhat of an org. chart using the following CTE: WITH OrgChart (employeeID, employeeName, managerID,level) AS ( SELECT employeeID,employeeName,0 as managerID,0 AS Level FROM Employees WHERE managerID IS NULL UNION ALL SELECT Employees.employeeID,Employees.employeeName,Employees.managerID,Level + 1 FROM Employees INNER JOIN OrgChart ON Employees.managerID = OrgChart.employeeID ) SELECT employeeID,employeeName, managerID, level FROM OrgChart; Is there any way to update the Employees table using a stored procedure rather than building some routine outside of SQL to parse through the data?

  • How do I show a user's credit based on their session

    - by Jamie
Hi all - I'm developing a simple LAMP app where users can credit their account using Paypal. I suspect this is a simple issue, but have spent quite a while experimenting to no avail and would appreciate any thoughts: System has a user management system working fine using sessions, but I can't get it to display the current user's credit. But I've been trying things along the lines of: $result = mysql_query(" SELECT * FROM users INNER JOIN account ON account.UserID=account.UserID ORDER BY account.accountID"); while($_SESSION['Username'] = $row['Username'] ) { echo $row['Username']; echo $row['Credit']; } I suspect the while statement is invalid, but I want it to echo username and credit where the current session username = the username stored in the database. Thanks so much for taking a look - very much appreciated.

  • SQL datasource for gridview

    - by Karsten
Hi I want to use a gridview with sorting and paging to display data from an SQL server, the query uses 3 joins and the full text search containstable. The from part of the query uses all 3 tables in the join. What is the best way to do this? I can think of a stored procedure, SQL directly in the SQLDataSource and creating a view in the database. I want good performance and would like to leverage the automatic sorting and paging features of the gridview as much as possible.

Probably should compare the input sound level in Chunk, but how do this?

  • Modify PHP Search Script to Handle Multiple Entries For a Single Input

    - by Thomas
I need to modify a php search script so that it can handle multiple entries for a single field. The search engine is designed for a real estate website. The current search form allows users to search for houses by selecting a single neighborhood from a dropdown menu. Instead of a dropdown menu, I would like to use a list of checkboxes so that the the user can search for houses in multiple neighborhoods at one time. I have converted all of the dropdown menu items into checkboxes on the HTML side but the PHP script only searches for houses in the last checkbox selected. For example, if I selected: 'Dallas' 'Boston' 'New York' the search engine will only search for houses in New York. Im new to PHP, so I am a little at a loss as to how to modify this script to handle the behavior I have described: <?php require_once(dirname(__FILE__).'/extra_search_fields.php'); //Add Widget for configurable search. add_action('plugins_loaded',array('DB_CustomSearch_Widget','init')); • Update table.column with another table.column with common joined column

    - by Matt
Hit a speed bump, trying to update some column values in my table from another table. This is what is supposed to happen when everything works Correct all the city, state entries in tblWADonations by creating an update statement that moves the zip city from the joined city/state zip field to the tblWADonations city state TBL NAME | COLUMN NAMES tblZipcodes with zip, city,State tblWADonations with zip, oldcity, oldstate This is what I have so far: UPDATE tblWADonations SET oldCity = tblZipCodes.city, oldState = tblZipCodes.state FROM tblWADonations INNER JOIN tblZipCodes ON tblWADonations.zip = tblZipCodes.zip Where oldCity <> tblZipcodes.city; There seems to be easy ways to do this online but I am overlooking something. Tried this by hand and in editor this is what it kicks back. Msg 8152, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 String or binary data would be truncated. The statement has been terminated. Please include a sql statement or where I need to make the edit so I can mark this post as a reference in my favorites. Thanks!

  • Query results taking too long on 200K database, speed up tips?

    - by colorfulgrayscale
I have a sql statement where I'm joining about 4 tables, each with 200K rows. The query runs, but keeps freezing. When I do a join on 3 tables instead, it returns the rows (takes about 10secs). Any suggestion why? suggestions to speed up? Thanks! Code SELECT * FROM equipment, tiremap, workreference, tirework WHERE equipment.tiremap = tiremap.`TireID` AND tiremap.`WorkMap` = workreference.`aMap` AND workreference.`bMap` = tirework.workmap LIMIT 5 p.s and if it helps any, I'm using sql alchemy to generate this code, the sqlalchemy code for this is query = session.query(equipment, tiremap, workreference, tirework) query = query.filter(equipment.c.tiremap == tiremap.c.TireID) query = query.filter(tiremap.c.WorkMap==workreference.c.aMap) query = query.filter(workreference.c.bMap == tirework.c.workmap) query = query.limit(5) query.all()

  • Read XML file from ADO (VB6) Into .Net DataSet

    - by Jimbo
I am trying to assist users in migrating from a VB6 application to a C# application. The VB6 app allows the export of data from an ADO (2.8) recordset via XML, but the C# application fails to read the XML producing the following error: System.Data.DuplicateNameException: A column named 'name' already belongs to this DataTable VB6 Code Dim RS As Recordset Set RS = p_CN.Execute("SELECT * FROM tblSuppliers INNER JOIN tblSupplierGroups ON tblSupplierGroups.SupplierGroupID=tblSuppliers.SupplierGroupID") RS.Save sDestinationFile, adPersistXML Set RS = Nothing C# Code DataSet ds = new DataSet(); ds.ReadXml(xmlFilePath); I have obviously incorrectly assumed that the XML file format was universally understood?
