• New ZFSSA code release - April 2012

  A new version of the ZFSSA code was released over the weekend. In case you have missed a few, we are now on code 2011.1.2.1. This minor update is very important for our friends with the older SAS1 cards on the older 7x10 systems. This 2.1 minor release was made specifically for them, and fixes the issue that their SAS1 card had with the last major release. They can now go ahead and upgrade straight from the 2010.Q3.2.1 code directly to 2011.1.2.1. If you are on a 7x20 series, and already running 2011.1.2.0, there is no real reason why you need to upgrade to 1.2.1, as it's really only the Pandora SAS1 HBA fix. If you are not already on 1.2.0, then go ahead and upgrade all the way to 2011.1.2.1. I hope everyone out there is having a good April so far. • Dealing With Table Borders In OOXML

Permalink Formatting tables in a document programmatically can be a very complex task.  This is the major reason which we start our document generation projects with templates instead of building components in a document by hand. Borders are on aspect of a table that you may want to fomat.  Borders are used to make certain content in a table stand out.  If you need to conditionally set and remove borders there is something that you need to be aware of.  Even in OOXML you have the concepts of styles, inheriting styles and overriding styles. When Word defines a table it will reference a global style such as “TableGrid”.  This style will include the borders for the table.  Specifically the InsideHorizontalBorder and InsideVerticalBorder define the borders for the cells.  These can be overridden by the TableCellBorders collection of a particular cell.  Adding a double right border on a cell is as easy as the couple of lines of code below. wordprocessing.TableCellBorders borders = new wordprocessing.TableCellBorders(); borders.RightBorder = new RightBorder(){Val = BorderValues.Double, Color = "000000", ThemeColor = ThemeColorValues.Text1, Size = (UInt32Value)4U, Space = (UInt32Value)0U }; cell.TableCellProperties.Append(borders); If I want to revert back to the table’s style for cell borders I simply need to remove all children from the TableCellBorders collection.  It is like removing a class identifier from a TD tag in HTML.  The style in the parent object takes back over. • Why are Linux-based operating systems considered safer than Windows?

  I hear that Linux-based systems are better for security. Apparently they don't have viruses and do not need antivirus software. Even my university claims this - they refuse to have Windows on their servers, which is a real shame because we wanted to use the .NET framework to create some websites. The only reason I can see Linux being safer is because it's open-source, so bugs theoretically would get caught and fixed sooner. I know a bit about how operating systems work, but haven't really delved into how Linux and Windows implement their OS. Can someone explain the difference that makes Linux-based systems more secure?

• no-www redirect not working / DNS A record

  I'm far from an expert on this, but I'll try to be as clear as possible. I have an eshop solution leased from a company and it's hosted on their server. I can access it thru company.com/myshop and it also allows me to set up to 3 domains that they should recognize and redirect to my specific shop from. I registered a domain with a different company and am trying to "redirect" it to the eshop. By means of one of the following DNS entries (as they look in the admin GUI) * A 111.111.111.111 *.myshop.com A 111.111.111.111 myshop.com A 111.111.111.111 I've managed to make www.myshop.com redirect to the IP of company.com (111.111.111.111), which then goes on to do exactly what I expect it to do (ie. recognizes it comes from my domain, does some further redirects itself). However, I can't seem to make myshop.com (ie. without the www) redirect to that IP, too. The company that I registered the domain with provides a "URL redirect" service, but google would only register the redirect request and wouldn't follow it. That's why I hope for a DNS solution to this - my assumption being I've managed to miss adding a record to the DNS; if, however, the reason lies elsewhere, I'd be happy to hear about that too. If it's a search engine friendly solution (ie the www/no-www dilemma - avoidance of double content penalties), then that's even better; have no prefference either way (www/no-www), just need it to work. • How to run UNetBootin (or similar) on Linux?

  I am trying to install UNetbootin on my Linux Mint (12 - KDE) machine and it will not run. I downloaded the Linux version of it (downloads as a unetbootin-linux-581 file) and set its permission to chmod +x unetbootin-linux-581. I've tried running it every way I can think of: Double-clicking it from the dolphin file manager Running ./unetbootin-linux-581 Running sh ./unetbootin-linux-581 Running unetbootin-linux-581.sh Nothing seems to be working. So I downloaded it on my Linux Ubuntu (12.04) machine, in case UNetbootin doesn't run on Mint for some reason, and am getting the same results. How do I run it, or what do I need to do to be able to run it?!? Thanks in advance!

• grep pattern interpretted differently in 2 different systems with same grep version

  We manufacture a linux appliance for data centers, and all are running fedora installed from the same kickstart process. There are different hardware versions, some with IDE hard drives and some SCSI, so the filesystems may be at /dev/sdaN or /dev/hdaN. We have a web interface into these appliances that show disk usage, which is generated using "df | grep /dev/*da". This generally works for both hardware versions, giving an output like follows: /dev/sda2 5952284 3507816 2137228 63% / /dev/sda5 67670876 9128796 55049152 15% /data /dev/sda1 101086 11976 83891 13% /boot However, for one machine, we get the following result from that command: Binary file /dev/sda matches It seems that its grepping files matching /dev/*da for an unknown pattern for some reason, only on this box that is seemingly identical in grep version, packages, kernel, and hardware. I switched the grep pattern to be "/dev/.da" and everything works as expected on this troublesome box, but I hate not knowing why this is happening. Anyone have any ideas? Or perhaps some other tests to try?

• Config xampp never to cache pages from localhost

  Hello everyone: I am not a webmaster, and that was exactly the reason why I installed XAMPP 1.7.2 on Windows XP SP2 instead of manually configuring Apache, MySQL and PHP to cooperate each other. Now I am having to problem to disable caching pages from localhost. Some suggested just force the browser not to cache, using Firefox web developer bar or something similar; but I feel it would be better if I could configure the Apache server in XAMPP to never allow pages from localhost to be cached. I guess this is done somewhere in httpd.conf? LoadModule cache_module modules/mod_cache.so Would this module be helpful in this case? Doc here : mod_cache I am not very sure this would resolve the problem. Could anyone confirm this approach feasible? I'd like to work it out myself, given the fact that I am on the right track... • XFS and loss of data when power goes down

  Each time electricity goes down, my desktop (without UPS) loses some temporary information. Opera can lose settings, history, cache, or mail accounts (Thanks heavens I was wise to use IMAP). Partially or all together. a whole file (complete and save) in Geany appeared empty (and I didn't commit it to Git) rhythmbox lost all podcasts subscription data I'm afraid there are other losses I just didn't see. What's the reason? A memory files cache, a mem-disk? Or non-atomic file writes in xfs? I have Ubuntu 9.10 and XFS on both / and /home partitions. Is ext4 safer in such circumstances? I've seen ext3 is faster. Is it as safe as *4? Given that the apartment I rent is connected to a common bus and 1 safety switch for several apartments, and the neighbors - alone or together - overload it at least once every week, the lights go down often enough for this to be an issue.

• How to run MS C++ 6.0 on Windows 7

  I have MS Windows C++ version 6.0 on XP. I'd like to move it to a Windows 7 platform but when I try to install it there I get some garbage about it not being compatible, proceed at your own risk etc. When I proceed, it (not surprisingly) doesn't work. Is there a way to convince these Microsoft tools to play nice with each other? I have Win7 home edition, but I would be willing to upgrade to Win7 Pro IF I knew it would work under the "XP emulation" mode. Failing both those options, what is the least expensive "upgrade" path for C++? I don't need a bunch of other junk, just the C++ compiler. The goal is to retire my XP system since currently the only reason I keep it is to compile C++ programs that eventually are run under Win7. Thanks, Hotei

• pecl_http extension not loading

  For some reason pecl_http extension is not showing up in my test.php file with contains: <?php phpinfo(); ?> I just installed pecl_http using: pecl install pecl_http The install was successful and I verified it by running: pecl list Installed packages, channel pecl.php.net: ========================================= Package Version State mongo 1.2.10 stable pecl_http 1.7.4 stable I then located my php.ini file using: php -i | grep 'Configuration File' Configuration File (php.ini) Path => /etc/php5/cli Loaded Configuration File => /etc/php5/cli/php.ini I edited it in vim and added: extension=http.so Finally I restarted Nginx and PHP-FastCGI: /etc/init.d/nginx restart /etc/init.d/php-fastcgi stop /etc/init.d/php-fastcgi start My PHP extension_dir is : /usr/lib/php5/20090626 I verified that "http.so" is located in that directory. Any ideas why it's not loading? My machine is running a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit Profile on Linode. The only other extensions I have installed are New Relic and Mongo. Thanks!

• Apple XRaid questions

  I inherited an environment with a couple of apple xraid san. 1 - I have a 14 drive setup that's split into 5 LUNs on EACH side. The SAN goes into a fibre switch along w/ the servers that are attached to it. LUN masking is enabled on the SAN and as far as I know, there aren't any zoning on the fibre switch. Question, I have a server that's assigned two LUNs, one from each side of the controller. For some reason, it only sees one LUN (from the upper controller) and it doesn't see the one from the lower controller. The controller seems to be working fine as I have other servers attached to LUNs on the lower controller. 2 - I see a little "disclaimer" saying that any changes to the xraid will result in a reboot. So, if I add/remove hosts, this thing is going to reboot?!?!?!

• ASA 5510 Need to filter traffic log events to my iPhone

  For some reason I cannot update apps or download apps to any ios devices on my network (tried both iphone and ipads). When I'm at home on my own network everything works fine. This started about a week ago. I've configured my iphone with a static IP address and even used 4.2.2.2 as my dns to rule out that the issue is with my DNS Server. I'm looking at the SYSLOG in ASDM (Cisco ASA 5510) but Im not sure it is providing me enough info. It seems to be showing ACL blocks on my public ip address, but not individual client IP's, so I can't see whats going on. How can I setup a way to filter any incoming/outgoing traffic to my iPhone's static IP and try and troubleshoot this?

The reason is that LINQ does not cache the results of the collection but it does recalculate the contents for every new enumeration again. Since I have used state (the Hashset does decide which entries are part of the output) I do arrive with an empty sequence since Add of the Hashset will return false for all values I have already passed in leaving nothing to return a second time. The solution is quite simple: Use the Distinct extension method or cache the results by calling .ToList() or ToArray() for the result of the LINQ query. Lession Learned: Do never forget to think about state in Where clauses!

• rsync command deletion error "IO error encountered -- skipping file deletion"

  I use rsync command to take backup of files from one of my ubuntu server to another ubuntu machine. Backup server trigger a script that use rysnc command. Here is the command I use rsync -rltvh --partial --stats --exclude=.beagle/ --exclude=.* --delete-after root@live_server:/home/ /home/live_server_backup/home /tmp/logfile.log 2&1 live_server is ssh-able without password. So it works. Now problem is with --delete-after option After all file synced .At the end I can see deletion procedure skipped.logfile error is like IO error encountered -- skipping file deletion When i tried to find log there were some error while file sync rsync: send_files failed to open "/home/xyz/Desktop/PPT_session_1_context.pdf": Permission denied (13) So my understanding is as rsync could not read all the files from target for safety reason it is skipping the file deletion. Is there any way to make --delete-after work even if there is some permission error? I do not want to use force deletion as it will be dangerous in some situation.

The reason behind my question is that I want to change some folder rights on a domain shared disk and I need the Domain\Administrator user rights to do it. Usually, I do it by login as Domain\Administrator on the server hosting the shared disk but I would like to be able to do it from my PC, logged as my current login (Domain\me). EDIT As seen in the linked posts, it is not possible anymore on Windows Vista or 7. On Windows XP, the solution is to do: runas /user:domain\username "explorer /separate"

• Architecting Python application consisting of many small scripts

  I am building an application which, at the moment, consists of many small Python scripts. Each Python script processes items from one Amazon SQS queue. Emails come into an initial queue and are processed by a script and typically the script will do a small unit of processing (for example, parse email and store some database fields), then an item will be placed on the next queue for further processing, until eventually the email has finished going through the various scripts and queues. What I like about this approach is that it is very loosely coupled. However, I'm not sure how I should implement live. Should I make each script a daemon which is constantly polling it's inbound queue for things to do? Or should there be some overarching orchestration program or process? Or maybe I should not have lots of small Python scripts but one large application? Specific questions: How should I run each of these scripts - as a daemon with some sort or restart monitor to restart them in case they stop for any reason? If yes, should I have some program which orchestrates this? Or is the idea of many small script not a good one, would it make more sense to have a larger python program which contains all the functionality and does all the queue polling and execution of functionality for each queue? What is the current preferred approach to daemonising Python scripts? Broadly I would welcome any comments or opinions on any aspect of this. thanks

  Trying to download Django source package using dget and the .dsc file from here. Then dget fails to verify the source, because it is missing a public key. $ dget https://launchpad.net/ubuntu... • How to use multiple SkyDrive accounts on one computer?

  Is there any way how to use multiple SkyDrive accounts on one computer running MAC OS X or Windows 8? I would like to sync data from different accounts to different folder and not to merge these accounts to one. The reason is that every SkyDrive has it's storage limits and I'm using every account for different work data. The result should be the following: I have a number of SkyDrive accounts every for different work, let's say: S1 S2 S3 I would like to sync exactly the same number of folders on computer using different accounts to sync them: SkyDriveS1Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S1 SkyDrive) SkyDriveS2Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S2 SkyDrive) SkyDriveS3Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S3 SkyDrive) Is it possible somehow? I found a workaround for Windows machines (http://superuser.com/questions/525932/running-multiple-instances-of-microsoft-skydrive) but is there anything for MAC OS X machines? • difference between compiled and installed via rpm (zypper)

  In an openSUSE 11.1 I download, compile and install ImageMagick via: wget ftp://.../pub/graphics/ImageMagick/ImageMagick-6.7.7-0.zip unzip ImageMagick-6.7.7-0.zip cd ImageMagick-6.7.7-0 ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/ImageMagick make make install Everything works nicelly until I discover that JPG is not supported: identify -list format | grep -i jpg [nothing related to JPG returned] So I reconfigure and recompile using: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/ImageMagick --with-jpeg=yes --with-jp2=yes make make install But that changes nothing. I end up uninstalling: make uninstall and installing via zypper: zypper install ImageMagick This installed version 6.4.3 and now it does support JPG: identify -list format | grep -i jpg JPG* JPEG rw- Joint Photographic Experts Group JFIF format Any idea on what is going on here? What is a possible reason that this capability of ImageMagick was not there when compiled from source but was there when installed from rpm? Note that I don't necessarily care a lot about ImageMagick (since it now works), but generally about his kind of behaviour, becase in one way or another I've seen this happen in other ocasions as well.

• Application Lifecycle Management Tools

  Leading a team comprised of three former teams means that we have three of everything.  Three places to gather requirements, three (actually eight or nine) places for customers to submit support requests, three places to plan and track work. We’ve been looking into tools that combine these features into a single product.  Not just Agile planning tools, but those that allow us to look in a single place for requirements, work items, and reports. One of the interesting choices is Software Planner by Automated QA (the makers of Test Complete).  It's a lovely tool with real end-to-end process support.  We’re probably not going to use it for one reason – cost.  I’m sure our company could get a discount, but it’s on a concurrent user license that isn’t cheap for a large number of users.  Some initial guesswork had us paying over $6,000 for 3 concurrent users just to get started with the Enterprise version.  Still, it’s intuitive, has great Agile capabilities, and has a reputation for excellent customer support. At the moment we’re digging deeper into Rational Team Concert by IBM.  Reading the docs on this product makes me want to submit my resume to Big Blue.  Not only does RTC integrate everything we need, but it’s free for up to 10 developers.  It has beautiful support for all phases of Scrum.  We’re going to bring the sales representative in for a demo. This marks one of the few times that we’re trying to resist the temptation to write our own tool.  And I think this is the first time that something so complex may actually be capably provided by an external source.   Hooray for less work! • Should I include HTML markup in my JSON response?

  In an e-commerce site, when adding an item to a cart, I'd like to show a popup window with the options you can choose. Imagine you're ordering an iPod Shuffle and now you have to choose the color and text to engrave. I'd like the window to be modal, so I'm using a lightbox populated by an Ajax call. Now I have two options: Option 1: Send only the data, and generate the HTML markup using JavaScript What's nice about this is that it trims down the Ajax request to the bear minimum and doesn't mix the data with the markup. What's not so great about this is that now I need to use JavaScript to do my rendering, instead of having a template engine on the server-side do it. I might be able to clean up the approach a bit by using a client-side templating solution. Option 2: Send the HTML markup What's good about this is that I can have the same server-side templating engine I'm using for the rest of my rendering tasks (Django), do the rendering of the lightbox. JavaScript is only used to insert the HTML fragment into the page. So it clearly leaves the rendering to the rendering engine. Makes sense to me. But I don't feel comfortable mixing data and markup in an Ajax call for some reason. I'm not sure what makes me feel uneasy about it. I mean, it's the same way every web page is served up -- data plus markup -- right?

• Multi MVC processing vs Single MVC process

  I've worked fairly extensively with the MVC framework cakephp, however I'm finding that I would rather have my pages driven by the multiple MVC than by just one MVC. My reason is primarily to maintain an a more DRY principle. In CakePHP MVC: you call a URL which calls a single MVC, which then calls the layout. What I want is: you call a URL, it processes a layout, which then calls multiple MVC's per component/block of html on the page. When you compare JavaScript components, AJAX, and server side HTML rendering, it seems the most consistent method for building pages is through blocks of components or HTML views. That way, the view block could be situated either on the server or the client. This is technically my ONLY disagreement with the MVC model. Outside of this, IMHO MVC rocks! My question is: What other RAD frameworks follow the same principles as MVC but are driven rather by the View side of MVC? I've looked at Django and Ruby on Rails, yet they seems to be more Controller driven. Lift/Scala appears to be somewhat of a good fit, but i'm interested to see what others exist.
