• IPSec tunnel between FortiGate and iPhone / iOS - Works except for DNS / Wins

  I have configured my Fortigate with a new VPN IPSec tunnel to allow the iOS Cisco client to connect. That works fine. I can RDP to my servers, browse to my servers via IP address, etc. But, the iPhone does not resolve my internal IP addresses. I have added the DNS servers that serve addresses for my internal users, as well as the WINS servers, but the iPhone acts like it doesn't see them at all. config vpn ipsec phase1-interface edit "iPhone_VPN" set type dynamic set interface "wan1" set dhgrp 2 set proposal 3des-sha1 3des-md5 set xauthtype auto set mode-cfg enable set authusrgrp "iPhone_VPN_Users" set ipv4-start-ip 10.10.99.100 set ipv4-end-ip 10.10.99.199 set ipv4-netmask 255.255.0.0 set ipv4-dns-server1 10.10.2.1 set ipv4-dns-server2 10.22.1.80 set ipv4-wins-server1 10.10.2.1 set ipv4-wins-server2 10.22.1.80 set ipv4-split-include "Dialup_VPN_Networks" set psksecret ENC xxxxx next end For whatever reason, as far as I can tell, the iPhone does not 'see' the DNS or WINS entries. • Why does StackExchange store images in imgur rather than its own servers? [migrated]

  I am trying to understand the technical (and business) logic behind taking such an approach. Certainly SE isn't short of server or bandwidth resources. I don't think imgur is a CDN, so that can't be the reason. On the one hand one is giving up local control (meaning your files, your hardware) of the content. On the other, you don't have to use your own bandwidth, storage and resources. Then again, you depend on someone else for the reliability and up-time of your service.

• Database Performance Across 3 NetApp FAS2050

  I recently inherited a SQL Server 2005 box that has LUNs mounted on it from three different NetApp FAS2050 filers. The reason there are three is because the first two filers are out of space and our databases continually need more of it. What kind of performance impact (if any) does this setup have? Is it better to move the LUNs from the two other older filers to the newer one so that we have only one filer/controller for caching, etc ? This is in general. I apologize for not having more specifics.

• How do web-developers do web-design when freelancing?

  So I got my first job recently as junior web-developer. My company creates small/medium sites for wide variety of customers: autobusiness companies, weddign agencies, some sauna websites, etcetc, hope you get my point. They don't do big serious stuff like bank systems or really big systems, it's mostly small/medium-sized websites for startups/medium sized business. My main skills are PHP/MySQL, I also know HTML and a bit of CSS/JS/AJAX. I know that good web-developer must know some backend language (like PHP/Ruby/Python) AND HTML+CSS+JS+AJAX+JQuery combo. However, I was always wondering. In my company we have web-designer. In other serious organisations I often see the same stuff: web-developers who create business-logic and web-designers, who create design. As far as I know, after designers paint design of website they give it to developers either in PSD or sliced way, and developers put it together with logic, but design is NOT created by developers. Such separation seems very good for full-time job, but I am concerned with question how do freelance web-developers do websites? Do most of them just pay freelance designers to create design for them? Or do some people do both? Reason why I ask - I plan to start some freelancing in my free time after I get good at web-development. But I don't want to create websites with great business-logic but poor design. Neither I want to let someone else create a design for me. I like web-development very much and I am doing quite good, I like design aswell, even though I am a bit lost how to study it and get better at it. But I am scared that going in both directions won't let me become expert, it seems like two totally different jobs and getting really good in both seems very hard. But I really want to do both. What should I do? Thank you!

• Why Mac cannot connect to Iphone?

  I couldn't always ssh to my iPhone from my Mac. They're both on the same wifi network but sometimes the connection is established, sometimes it failed. From my Mac: $ ssh [email protected] ssh: connect to host 192.168.0.102 port 22: Operation timed out $ ping 192.168.0.102 PING 192.168.0.102 (192.168.0.102): 56 data bytes ping: sendto: No route to host ping: sendto: Host is down ping: sendto: Host is down I enabled SSH on the phone and am sure it can load webpages. • Invalid BOOT.INI (dual boot XP with 7)

  I had Windows XP x64 as my main system, and i also had a second partition with Windows XP x64. Both booted from first partition (C:) I then installed Windows 7 Ultimate on the first partition. I've added NTLDR using BCDRDIT. I've also copied NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI onto the drive where XP remained. However then i try to boot into Windows XP x64 i get Invalid BOOT.INI file Booting from c:\windows\ NTDETECT failed I found instructions on how to fix it using a boot disk, however the partitions are on a software RAID. I've tried to boot from a customized XP CD with the drivers, however it does not offer me a Repair option for some reason - just setup. • cannot get apache2 redirect working for a site

  what i want to do is to redirect all visitors going to example.com to www.example.com.it seems a very common task but for some reason it is not working for this specific site .it always points to the default one. I have had her dump temp Internet files and put the site in her trusted sites but nothing is working. I think thins started after some Windows updates but not sure. Any ideas on this one? BTW, it's not turned off kin Central Admin and none of her group memberships have changed.

• FileOpenPicker/FileSavePicker doesn't allow *.* wildcard file associations

  On Twitter, Matthias Jauernig commented that the FileOpenPicker and FileSavePicker doesn't allow *.* wildcard file associations. I was relaxed about this and wrote back that it was related to sandboxing implying it was a "good thing", however as Matthias commented back, perhaps it's not.In Metro-style the sandboxing works that if something gives you a file (e.g. the picker, or a share operation), you can access it regardless of where on the system. If you find the file yourself, you have to declare the type.The reason why I think it's related to sandboxing is because if you work with files programmatically you have to be explicit about the file types. This is to stop malware that you think is only interested in - say .PDF files, scanning and uploading any .EML files that it can find on the machine. It follows then on the pickers that restriction would continue. It allow's the retail store team to validate that an app is likely to behave itself. If it's an app that works with images, locking down the picker so that it can only access image file types makes sense.However Matthias mentioned that he has an app that should allow files of any arbitrary file. That fits more into the "if the user selects it, it must be OK" camp than the "programmatic scanning" camp. So now I'm left wondering why the picker doesn't allow any type to be selected.I think then maybe the decision comes down to simplicity. A lot of the decisions in Metro-style design relate to ideas about "zero intimidation". Allow the user to select any file is too much like Old Windows, and not enough like Reimagined Windows. What happens in Matthias's app if the user selects Explorer.exe as the file he or she wants to work with? I guess it's fine if you expect your user to know what they're doing (Old Windows), but not so fine if you're expecting a three year old to work with it (Reimagined Windows).

• Performance Overhead of Encrypted /home

  I have a netbook with Windows on the second partition and Xubuntu (/ and /home) on the third partition. I selected to encrypt my home folder during installation. The performance of the netbook is adequate for the small machine that it is, but I'm looking to improve performance. I could not find much information about the overhead (CPU or drive) associated with home partition encryption. I ran the following, writing to my home partition as well as the the mounted Windows partition: dd if=/dev/zero of=~/dummy bs=512 count=10240 dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/Windows/dummy bs=512 count=10240 The first returned 2.4MB/s and the second returned 2.5MB/s. Can I therefore deduce that there is very little overhead to home folder encryption? I'm not sure if the different filesystems will make any difference (/ and /home are ext3). Update 1 I don't know why I didn't use /tmp instead of the mounted Windows folder. Only /home is encrypted, so /tmp is unencrypted ext3. The results of the dd as above are astounding: ~: 2.4 MB/s /tmp: 42.6 MB/s Comments please? The reason I am asking this is that disk access on the netbook is noticeably slow. • creating proper vpn tunnel, when both LANs have the same addressing

  I was following this tutorial http://wiki.debian.org/OpenVPN#TLS-enabled_VPN and this one http://users.telenet.be/mydotcom/howto/linux/openvpn.htm to create openvpn connection to my remote LAN. But both examples assumed that both LANs have different addresses (ie 192.168.10.0/24 and 192.168.20.0/24, check out this image i.stack.imgur.com/2eUSm.png). Unfortunately in my case both local and remote lan have 192.168.1.0/24 addresses. I am able to connect directly on the openvpn server (I can ping it and log in with ssh), but I can't see other devices on the remote LAN (not mentioning accessing them via browser which was the point from the first place). And don't know if the addressing issue may be the reason of that? If not - how to define routes, so I could ping other devices in remote LAN?

• DNS NAmeserver Aname and cname records

  Hi - I am inexperienced in the configuration of DNS and have an issue with dominan hosting set up. I have two domains 'www.mydomain1.com' and 'www.mydomain2.com', with mydomain2 pointed at the same place as mydomain1. The domains were passed to me recently by the person who previoulsy controlled them. I have an account with fasthosts in the uk. When I accepted the domains I could not access the DNS settings and enquired with fasthosts as to why. The replied saying 'The delegate hosting option for both domains were enabled and this is the reason why you were unable to find the option to edit the advanced DNS records. I have now disabled the delegate hosting option so you can now edit the advanced DNS records for both domains in your account.' When i log into the fasthost control panel now i can access the DNS controls but both domains have no A Record of Cname record set up. I am concerned that fasthosts have blatted the previous Nameserver entries and set me up on theirs but not added any record. 'www.mydomain1.com' currently still works but 'www.mydomain2.com' does not find the site anymore. i am worried i will lose mydomain1 to as teh dns changes filter through the system. my webhosting is at 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/mydomain1.com/' and this is where I want both domains to point. Any advice would be much appreciated. one thing which is confusing me is that because I am on a shared server I have to put 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/mydomain1.com/' to get to my site rather than just 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx'. The form on fasthosts for the aname record only allows an IP to be entered - does it add the mydomain1.com/ onto the end itself? Thanks for any help given - I'm quite worried about this David

• Problems installing rails on Ubuntu 12.04. Rails gems library is empty

  I got some problem installing rails on Ubuntu 12.04. I have rails working on my Ubuntu for a little time. But for some reason I uninstall rails. When I decided to install it again with sudo gem install rails . The command rails -v doesn't work. When I run the command sudo gem install rails there is no error occurring just a message that saying: Successfully installed rails-3.2.6 I look at the folder /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rails-3.2.6 and it is completely empty? I wonder how I can fix this problem?

• Manage Sending 2010 Documents to the Web with Office Upload Center

  One of the main new features being touted in Office 2010 is the ability to upload documents to the Web for sharing and collaboration. Today we look at using Office Upload Center to help manage your uploaded documents. Microsoft Office Upload Center  When you upload an Office 2010 document to the web, a handy tool to manage them is the Office Upload Center. It’s a way to see what is being uploaded or what might have failed to reach the servers. It lets you know if a document failed to upload for some reason. In this case it looks like the incorrect credentials were entered when signing into Windows Live. Click on the Resolve button to get a list of actions you can take to get things corrected.   You can access the Upload Center from the icon which appears on the System Tray when uploading documents. Right-click the icon to control notifications, pause uploads, and access its settings. In the Settings section you can choose how Upload Center displays notifications, select the number of days to keep files in Cache, and delete currently cached files. If you find yourself uploading several documents to the web during the day, the Office Upload Center is a nice feature for managing them. • Konqueror on Windows XP : protocol not supported - man

  Hello everyone: I am new to the KDE and I am working all the time in a Windows XP environment. So I installed the KDE's Konqueror browser onto my laptop. The only reason for that is to allow me issue man:ls in the browser address bar and to get the man page displayed into the browser rather than printed inside the terminal. The problem is, I then get the error prompt saying that: protocol not supported man I guess something is wrong in the configuration, how to fix this problem? Many thanks in advance. The problem is definitely not the Konqueror browser, but is between the keyboard and the screen...

• Has there been a Firefox update recently?

  Trying again to ask a PROGRAMMING question because of the over-zealous closing off of what is equally a programming question before allowing the poster to clarify. The latest version of Firefox (v3.6.3) is breaking websites, mine included. I make heavy use of the Infragistic NetAdvantage controls. These, because of their heavy JavaScript reliance and occasional lack of quality control, tend to suffer through browser updates sometimes requiring a hotfix. So the question is... has there been a Firefox release recently that has either introduced a bug, tightening up of some standard, bug fix which might have broken a previous workaround (often the case) etc? I'm guessing around JavaScript but that's a guess hence the reason for asking a group of programmers...

• DVI-D connection does not display properly at higher resolutions (2560 x 1440)

  I have two computers connected to a Dell U2711 monitor. A PC which is connected using DisplayPort and a Mac connected using DVI-D. The PC displays 2560 x 1440 resolutions perfectly but when I try and set that resolution on the Mac it displays in an extremely fuzzy manner. So fuzzy in fact that I can hardly read the text on the screen. I've tried the Mac out connected via DisplayPort (unfortunately the monitor only has one DisplayPort connection) and it worked perfectly. I also had it connected via DVI-D in the past and it worked then. For some reason it just does not work anymore. I was wondering if this problem might be caused by a dodgy cable or perhaps not having the correct one. Can anyone think of what the issue might be? I've checked out the DVI-D spec and it should be able to display resolutions of 2560 x 1440 correctly.

• SO-overflow induced passivity - how to cope?

  After not really working on my pet project for a while, I discovered Stackoverflow and upon perusing it more intensely I was quite amazed. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so when I found eye-openers here highlighting many of the mistakes I made, I first wanted to fix everything. However, it's a pet project for a reason: I'm self-taught and I'm studying psychology, so programming skills can never become priority one (though it often helps, even in this field). Issues that stuck out were numerous security issues (e.g. CSRF-prevention and bcrypt eluded me) not object-oriented (at least the PHP part, the JS-part mostly is) no PHP framework used, so many of my DIY takes on commonly-tackled components (auth, ...) are either bad or inefficient really poor MySQL usage (no prepared statements, mysql extension, heard about setting proper indices two days ago) using mootools even though JQuery seems to be fashionable, so there's more probably always going to be better integration with services I'd like to use (like google visualization) So, my SO-induced frenzy turned into passivity. I can't do it all (soon) in the rather small amount of spare time I can spend on working on my project. I can leave some of the issues be in good conscience (speed stuff: an unfinished & unpublished project will never become popular, right?). No clear conscience without good security though and if I don't use a framework for auth and other complex stuff I'll regret having to do it myself. One obvious answer would probably be going open-source, but I think the project would need to become more impressive before others would commit to it. I can't afford to employ someone either. I do think the project deserves being worked on, though. How should I tackle it anyway? What's the best practice for little-practice people?

• Pictures clicked on Start Menu's Recent Items list opens in non default program

  I am using Picasa Photo Viewer and have associated all JPG and PNG files to open with it. However when I open an image from the Recent Items list in the Windows 7 Start Menu it opens with Windows Photo Viewer. The context menu for such items reveals no actions that would make it go to Windows Photo Viewer, and the default (one in bold) opens with the Picasa viewer as you'd expect. It's just that the left click behaves differently for some reason. Any ideas on how to fix this?

• Connect to MS Sql 2008 on local VM

  I have a test machine. Server 2008 with Hyper V MSSQL 2008 Enterprise Lets call it MACHINE A on the VM it is as well Server 2008 with another MSSQL 2008 Ent Call it VM B I setup a DB on MACHINE A then backed it up and restored following the prepare database for mirroring instructions on MSDN onto VM B. I used to be able to connect to the VM B Instance from the main test server (MACHINE A) but now I cannot for some reason. It cannot seem to find the instance at all even when I browse network databases. I can ping the VM from any computer on the network and access its shares so I know it is discoverable. Just the end of a long day maybe I am missing something here.

  Why would the boot screen be displayed on the external monitor? This is not really a problem, I'd just like to know the reason behind this. If I boot without an external monitor both the BIOS settings and the boot screen are displayed on the built-in LCD monitor. However, when I boot with a monitor attached, the boot screen and the BIOS settings are displayed on the external monitor. There isn't any setting available regarding this in the BIOS setup (as opposed to my Thinkpad T42 where there is an option regarding this). System specification ASUS K53SV laptop DELL IN2030M monitor (connected via VGA) Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64bit

• Questions about Mac Book Pro Keyboard and shortcuts

  I have been researching a lot about this and I cannot seem to find any useful information about this topic, what so ever. I have now been using Ubuntu in one week, and have gotten pretty confident with almost everything. Except keyboard layout and shortcuts. If you know a tutorial or a documents explaining keyboard shortcuts in Ubuntu or linux in general, can you please list it? I use a Mac Book Pro with a Norwegian keyboard, and I have several questions about this: Is there a program for having a consise list of absolutely all keyboard shortcuts, and be able to change them? How do I use my fn keys? (fn button doesnt do the job for some reason) How can I use my alt+letter-key-or-number-key or alt+shift+letter-key-or-number-key to get fancy characters. (Like I do on Mac OS X) How can I swap cmd and ctrl key system wide? Also I really want to be oriented around this subject, since this is the only thing holding me back on Ubuntu, so if there exists some in-depth material on this, it would be great. Also, if there exists some programs or material out there making it easier with Mac hardware I would enjoy that. Sorry if my questions seems vague. Thank you very much Simon
