• Why Can't Computers Off My Network See the Site? [migrated]

  Have just set up Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc. on my Ubuntu OS, and I was wondering why computers that are not on my network can not see the basic index.html that Apache uses as the default. I set up the static ip address for my computer, and I use 192.168.1.100 for computers to view the simple site. Is there something I am missing that will allow others to access my site? (It is REALLY simple; no graphics, CSS, etc.)

• Is executing SQL through a WebService a really bad idea?

  Typically when creating a simple tool or something that has to use a database, I go through the fairly long process of first creating a webservice that connects to a database then creating methods on this webservice that do all the type of queries I need.. methods like List<Users> GetUsers() { ... } User GetUserByID(int id) { ... } //More Get/Update/Add/Delete methods Is it terrible design to simply make the webservice as secure as I can (not quite sure the way to do something like this yet) and just make a couple methods like this SqlDataReader RunQuery(string sql) { ... } void RunNonQuery(string sql) { ... } I would sorta be like exposing my database to the internet I suppose, which sounds bad but I'm not sure. I just feel like I waste so much time running everything through this webservice, there has to be a quicker yet safe way that doesn't involve my application connecting directly to the database (the application can't connect directly to database because the database isn't open to any connections but localhost, and where the appliction resides the standard sql ports are blocked anyway) Especially when I just need to run a few simple queries

• What command are my volume keys running?

  In Unity I use my ThinkPad hot keys to change the volume. I need to know the command that these keys run so that I can bind it in my window manager. I have tried using amixer but could not change the volume through command line amixer set Master 10%- amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Master',0 amixer scontrols: Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0 amixer set 'IEC958' 50%- amixer: Invalid command! So obviously this is not what Unity is running. I have tried changing the default sound card as well but that didn't help.

  I'm beginning to implement a simple scripting system into my networked server, and I've hit a snag. Before, I've been wrapping my calls into functions on objects that manipulate objects, but lately I've been finding this to be a pain for simple things. For example, if I set 'player.HP = 1'.. this works server-side. But the player side never sees this change unless I explicitly send a packet to inform the client. For many things like map swapping that require more complicated changes, like change X, Y, Map and do this.. I have a function. That's fine. But what about these small properties I want to sync?

• Beginner's steps to game programming [on hold]

  I have graduated from university less than 6 months ago and became a B.Eng in Software Engineering. I have moderate understanding of programming experience from languages like C++, Java and C#. But mostly on simple desktop and mobile applications. I've tried some simple Pong-like games but never finished even the smallest game. I have a couple of nice ideas growing (IMO, at least...) in my mind but don't really know where to begin. 2D is way to go, of course, at the beginning. I just want to hear from more experienced game devs how they started out. Should I make a rough outline of the core idea and mechanics and start working on a prototype of core gameplay? Or should I just practice more by making Pong, Asteroids and that sort of games and get an understanding of those before moving on? Thanks to all!

  I need to redirect CakePHP installation host to my domain. Location of my Cakephp installation: myhosting.com/newsite/ Domain: www.mydomain.com I'm currently using URL Frame to direct www.mydomain.com to myhosting.com/newsite/. Problem When I load www.mydomain.com, I see all links in the site is pointing to the hosting location - example - myhosting.com/newsite/product/1 It should be pointing to www.mydomain.com/product/1 Any simple way to fix this? Probably very simple to solve it, but I can't bend it. Help much appreciated.

• Understanding the Value of SOA

  Written By: Debra Lilley, ACE Director, Fusion Applications Again I want to talk from my area of expertise of Fusion Applications and talk about their design fundamentals. If you look at the table below and start at the bottom Oracle have defined all of the business objects e.g. accounts, people, customers, invoices etc. used by Fusion Applications; each of these objects contain all of the information required and can be expanded if necessary.  That Oracle have created for each of these business objects every action that is needed for the applications e.g. all the actions to create a new customer, checking to see if it exists, credit checking with D&B (Dun & Bradstreet < http://www.dnb.co.uk/> ) , creating the record, notifying those required etc. Each of these actions is a stand-alone web service. Again you can create a new actions or subscribe to an external provided web service e.g. the D&B check. The diagram also shows that all of development of Fusion Applications is from their Fusion Middleware offerings. Then the Intelligent Business Process is the order in which you run these actions, this is Service Orientated Architecture, SOA. Not only is SOA used to orchestrate actions within Fusion Applications it is also used in the integration of Fusion Applications with the rest of the Oracle stable of applications such as EBS, PeopleSoft, JDE and Siebel. The other applications are written with propriety development tools so how do they work with SOA? It’s a very simple answer, with the introduction of the Oracle SOA platform each process within these applications was made available to be called as a web service. I won’t go into technically how that is done but what’s known as a wrapper to allow each of them to act in this way was added. Finally at the top of the diagram are the questions that each Fusion Application process must answer, and this is the ‘special’ sauce that makes them so good, the User Experience, but that is a topic for another day, or you can read about it in my blog http://debrasoracle.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/going-on-record-about-fusion-apps-cloud.html or Oracle’s own UX blog https://blogs.oracle.com/usableapps/ The concept behind AppAdvantage is not new the idea that Oracle technology can add value to your Oracle applications investments is pretty fundamental. Nishit Rao who is in AppAdvantage team provided myself and other ACE Directors with demo kits so that we could demonstrate SOA running with the applications. The example I learnt to build was that of the EBS inventory open interface. The simple concept is that request records can be added to a table and an import run that creates these as transactions in inventory. What’s SOA allows you to do is to add to the table from any source and then run this process automatically whereas traditionally you had to run the process at regular intervals because you didn’t know if the table was empty or not. This may just sound like a different way of doing the same thing but if the process is critical for your business then the interval was very small and the process run potentially many times unnecessarily. Using SOA it only happened when necessary without any delay.   I keep lots of notes as I work - code snippets, TODO lists, account details, links, comments. I currently use plain text files for this - very simple and robust but a bit last-century. I would like features similar to HTML - e.g. to embed pictures, formatting, and crucially hyperlinks within my notes. One particular use-case is an implementation of Getting Things Done - more or less, a collection of hierarchical TODO lists, which I'd implement with hyperlinks between tasks. Most WYSIWYG HTML editors seem to be aimed at web designers, creating beautiful pages for professional websites. Is there a simple tool / editor more appropriate for how I want to use it? (or advice from anyone doing the same)

• Algorithm to generate N random numbers between A and B which sum up to X

  This problem seemed like something which should be solvable with but a few lines of code. Unfortunately, once I actually started to write the thing, I've realized it's not as simple as it sounds. What I need is a set of X random numbers, each of which is between A and B and they all add up to X. The exact variables for the problem I'm facing seem to be even simpler: I need 5 numbers, between -1 and 1 (note: these are decimal numbers), which add up to 1. My initial "few lines of code, should be easy" approach was to randomize 4 numbers between -1 and 1 (which is simple enough), and then make the last one 1-(sum of previous numbers). This quickly proved wrong, as the last number could just as well be larger than 1 or smaller than -1. What would be the best way to approach this problem? PS. Just for reference: I'm using C#, but I don't think it matters. I'm actually having trouble creating a good enough solution for the problem in my head.

My goal is to convert the data in an 3D .obj file (vertices, normals, faces) to CSS3D (width, height, rotateX,Y,Z and/or similar transforms).
