Is it thread safe to read a form controls value (but not change it) without using Invoke/BeginInvoke from another thread

I know you can read a gui control from a worker thread without using Invoke/BeginInvoke because my app is doing it now. The cross thread exception error is not being thrown and my System.Timers.Timer thread is able to read gui control values just fine (unlike this guy: can a worker thread read a control in the GUI?) Question 1: Given the cardinal rule of threads, should I be using Invoke/BeginInvoke to read form control values? And does this make it more thread-safe? The background to this question stems from a problem my app is having. It seems to randomly corrupt form controls another thread is referencing. (see question 2) Question 2: I have a second thread that needs to update form control values so I Invoke/BeginInvoke to update those values. Well this same thread needs a reference to those controls so it can update them. It holds a list of these controls (say DataGridViewRow objects). Sometimes (not always), the DataGridViewRow reference gets "corrupt". What I mean by corrupt, is the reference is still valid, but some of the DataGridViewRow properties are null (ex: row.Cells). Is this caused by question 1 or can you give me any tips on why this might be happening? When I create a .tex file using vim I get a nice template from having autocmd BufNewFile *.tex 0r $HOME/.vim/templates/skeleton.tex in my .vimrc. I also have a makefile-template in my home directory, but this one I have to manually copy to where the .tex file is. In a Linux environment, how can I auto-copy or auto-generate the makefile at the same time as I create a .tex file?

Background: See, my employer is wanting me to build one in C# as a kind of training exercise, but also to be a product for sales lead generation for another product they sell. The employer is perfectly okay buying something, as long as it's good. I've learned VB6 and PHP, and know a little C and C++, so I'm trying to learn where people get the best-rated addon components for it, and especially for this PDF viewer and form filler thing he wants.

My website sells one item. I am currently using the simple checkout button embedded on the website. Rather than having the button I would like the order form to be on the single page with a field for quantity. At first I imagined that there would be a simple form that I could embed however it looks like that I need a full integration into my website through the Advanced Integration Method (AIM) which is much more complicated then I wanted. I don't want integration into my website, can I do it without, and if I have to what is the cleanest and simplest way to do it?

Is it bad form to stage a function's steps in intermediate variables (let bindings)?

I find I tend to need intermediate variables. In Clojure that's in the form of let bindings, like cmp-result-1 and cmp-result-2 in the following function. (defn str-cmp "Takes two strings and compares them. Returns the string if a match; and nil if not." [str-1 str-2 start-pos substr-len] (let [cmp-result-1 (subs str-1 start-pos substr-len) cmp-result-2 (subs str-2 start-pos substr-len)] (compare cmp-result-1 cmp-result-2))) I could re-write this function without them, but to me, the function's purpose looks clearer. I tend to do this quite in a bit in my main, and that is primarily for debugging purposes, so I can pass a variable to print out intermediate output. Is this bad form, and, if so, why? Thanks.

Send some form info to a PHP page to be processed without going to that page? [closed]

Okay, so I'm not very familiar with php. I have a very simple form, just 2 text fields. All I want to do is, after validating with JavaScript, send these two string fields in an email to a pre-defined email address. I understand how JavaScript works on the client side; you can respond to user events, etc. And PHP is server-side. What I'm having trouble grasping and figuring out is how do I run PHP functions, etc when I want? I figured out how to use the 'action' attribute of the form to send the data via POST to another PHP page. But this simply opens that page. I don't want to open the page I just want to do some processing and send a message back to the page the user is still on. How do I go about something like that? Thanks.

Hello. I`v made my custom NewForm.aspx for my list and I want to add some custom code to it. So I inherit that form from my own class: public class MyCustomNewForm : Microsoft.SharePoint.WebPartPages.WebPartPage Now I want to reference some of available fields to automatically fill them for user. (Javascript won't help here as I have to get some data from other lists). But I have no idea how do I reference these fields from codebehind files. Refactoring an ERB Template to Haml

ERB is the default view templating system used by Ruby on Rails. Haml is an alternative templating system that uses whitespace to represent document structure. Summary I am extremely happy with the switch. No doubt there are further improvements that I can make, but I feel like what I have now is clean and well factored.

How to disable monitor auto detection in Windows 7?

I am currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with a dual monitor setup with an NVIDIA 7950 GT graphics card. One monitor is dedicated to this machine and the other monitor is connected to a DVI KVM switch. When I switch to my other computer, Windows 7 disables the monitor. However, when I switch back it does not re-enable the monitor. The only circumstance that automatically re-enables the second monitor is when I switch back after Windows has put the monitors into power save mode. I am continually having to bring up the NVIDIA control panel to have it re-enable the monitor. Under Windows XP I would just disable the NVIDIA service to prevent it from auto-detecting the monitor (which doesn't solve the problem under Win7), and in Vista there was a registry hack that would prevent this. It looks as though that has been removed in Windows 7. I have found similar questions posted on this site, but nothing that matches my problem exactly. Migrating to AWS Cloud with auto-scaling - where to put Redis and ElasticSearch?

I've been trying to research this topic but haven't found anywhere that recommends where to install services such as Redis and ElasticSearch when migrating to a cloud framework. I'm currently running a Symfony2 application on 2 static servers - one is running MySQL and the other is the public facing web server, which also has Redis and ElasticSearch running on it. Both of these servers are virtualised, but they're static in terms of not being able to replicate at present (various aspects are still dependent on the local filesystem). The goal is to migrate to AWS and use auto-scaling to be able to spin up and kill web servers as required, but I'm not clear on what I should put on each EC2 instance. Should they be single-responsibility only? i.e. Set up individual instances for the web server(s), Redis, and ElasticSearch and most likely an RDS instance for MySQL and only set up auto-scaling on the web server(s)? I don't foresee having to scale the ElasticSearch server anytime soon as it's only driving the search functionality, but it's possible that Redis may need to be replicated at some point - but should this be done manually? I'm not sure of how this could be done automatically as each instance needs to be configured to know about it's master/slave(s) as far as I know. I'd appreciate advice on this. One more quick question while I'm here - how would I be able to deploy code changes when there are X web servers currently active? I'm using a Capifony deployment script (Symfony2 version of Capistrano), which I think can handle multiple servers easily enough by specifying an array of :domain addresses...but how can should this be handled when the number of web servers can vary?

How to stop Vista from auto changing video resolution?

I have new Acer Aspire Revo R3600 computer with Vista pre-installed. The computer has NVidia video adapter. While connecting 17" LCD monitor (LG L1742S) via VGA cable it works fine, and I can change the resolution of the display from max 1920*1024 down to some other value, and after reboot the settings are restored correctly. But when I'm connecting bigger full HD 1920*1080 display (LG E2250) via VGA cable then every boot I have the same problem: I see boot progress window, then I see MS logo, then I see welcome screen then I start to see desktop and suddenly monitor switch off and show me the message about unsupported frequency of input signal As I understand Vista tries to auto-change resolution and sets wrong parameters. I've tried to boot into safe mode and into low-resolution mode, every time I have the same problem: Vista boot-up and suddenly monitor stops working. I've tried to connect this monitor to notebook with Windows XP and has no problem to work with this display on its native resolution. How can I disable this display resolution auto-changer in Vista? Or maybe there is another workaround?

How to ensure local file is up-to-date or ahead (dropbox sync) before truecrypt auto-mount it?

There are a lot tutorials out there that states that dropbox build-in encryption is not secure enought. That tutorials recommands to sync a truecrypt container file to have all files in it securely encrypted. This setup is know to be limited. You can NOT have that truecrypt container file mounted on the same time on more than one location - if you have inserted changes to the contents of the container in more then one location at a time then this setup produces a conflict on the container file in the dropbox system - resulting in one container file for each location. In my case that issue is not relevant - i do not use my data on more than one location at a time. I want to use the auto-mount feature of truecrypt on startup of windows 7 to have a zero configuration environment - and start working right away. But i want to ensure that the local truecrypt container file is up-to-date before truecrypt mounts it automatically - imagine you updated the contents of the container on your primary location and your secondary location was off for a long time. In that case it can take "a long time" till dropbox sync is complete (e.g. depending on your internet connection and the size of the container file). There is a option in truecrypt that ensures that truecrypt do not update the timestamp of the container file - which speeds up the sync, because dropbox client is doing a differential sync then instead of a time consuming full-sync. That is an improvement to that setup, but this do not fix my issue. The question is how to make the auto-mount function wait for the container file to be up-to-date (updated by dropbox)? In contrast: if the file was changed local, but remote file (in the dropbox cloud system) is still old (not jet updated by the sync process / or process is progress), should not make truecrypt to wait for the sync. Suggestions?

Hello, after reading through a couple similar Qs/As I haven't quite found the solution I'm looking for. The table data I have is GROUP BY DATE(timestamp) and returning a count, example result: [timestamp] = 2010-05-12 20:18:36 [count] = 10 [timestamp] = 2010-05-14 10:10:10 [count] = 8 Without using a temporary table, or calendar table is there a way to fill in those missing dates? so that with the same table data would return (adding the bold row): [timestamp] = 2010-05-12 20:18:36 [count] = 10 [timestamp] = 2010-05-13 00:00:00 [count] = 0 [timestamp] = 2010-05-14 10:10:10 [count] = 8 Thanks!

A ToolStripComboBox is placed after a ToolStripButton and is folowed by another one, which is right-aligned. How do I best set up the ToolStripComboBox to always adjust its length to fill all the space available between the preceeding and the folowing ToolStripButtons? In past I used to handle a parent resize event, calculate the new length to set based on neighboring elements coordinates and setting the new size. But now, as I am developing a new application, I wonder if there is no better way.

Hello all, I have added a UIButton in the header section of the UITableView via the interface builder and would like to remove the access to the button in certain cases. I have tried to use the '.hidden = TRUE' property but it just hides the button from the view, leaving a white space behind. How do I programmatically remove the header of UITableView and have the table's content automatically resizes to fill in the removed header area?
