• Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. Incorrect password on screensaver

  First some software details: Thin client: Wyse C10LE Citrix - Windows Terminal Services - Windows Server 2008 Enterprise desktop I have a user with a very strange problem. When he locks his screen with Win+L, Windows claims he's entering wrong password when he tries to log back in. The only solution is to hard reboot the WYSE, and log back in. This reboot doesn't kill his Windows session. I've checked for errors in keyboard settings (wrong layout etc), nothing found. I suspect errors in his profile/errors in AD. No other users in the domain has this problem. EDIT: Sorry, it's NOT Win R2. Plain Windows Sever 2008

• How can I continue audio playback even after switching user?

  I just tested it with iTunes; after switching the user account (only after logging into another account, to be precise) the audio playback from the account "A" stops. However iTunes continues playing in the background; which I realized after switching back to account "A". Very frustrating because it kind-of is a deal-breaker for me; the other person should be able to have some personalized settings; while it is still my computer, and the main account has all the music obviously. The ideal solution would be audio output continuing running while user still has the ability to manually pause it... EDIT: I tested a bit more: "Desktop" apps like VLC don't output sound but continue running; the stock Music.app in Metro pauses the music and continues playing when switching back.

• Exchange stops working after changing System Time

  I am currently in a situation where the system time of my windows machine differs 6 hours from the actual local time. I tried chaning the system time of my windows machine 6 hours back to match the actual local time. The issue is, when the system time is changed, Exchange stops working as it wont start anymore. When i change the time back Exchange works again. Here is the error that it shows when im trying to open the management console after changing the system time. The Follwing error occured while attempting to connect to the specified server "servername". The attempt to connect to http://servername/PowerShell using "Kerberos" authentication failed: Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message: Access is denied. • Data recovery on a Samsung SV1203N HDD

  Let me start by saying that I am a beginner in Ubuntu, but pretty knowledgeable with Windows. I am having a strange problem trying to recover data from a Samsung SV1203N HDD (120 GiB). I have tried numerous things in both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (on a flash drive, an external HDD and a Live CD). This drive has some very important data on it and I am praying some of you Ubuntu geeks can help me get it back. Here's my problem. The HDD is clicking while I am booting, but it stops when I get into Ubuntu or Windows. It refuses to be detected in the bios, so I cant perform any tests on it. I have tried numerous things in both Windows (repair CD, Jumpers, etc.) and Ubuntu (Boot-Fix, GParted, Testdisk, Photorec, forcing a mount, etc.). But it all seems to lead me back to the fact that the drive is not being recognized in the BIOS. I've even tried chilling the drive in the fridge, which worked well for another drive I work on, and I recovered all of the data in Ubuntu flawlessly. I am assuming that since the drive stops clicking when I get into the OS' that there is hope for recovery. I am going to try an IDE/SATA to USB cable, and replacing the Logic Board, but I want to exhaust all other possibilities before I do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated Bye

  For Brief I am a recently graduated CS student. I am looking for a job these days, but I have no idea what kind of software development jobs I like(embedded system,web development or else...). And I am looking for your advice. Here is a little more While I was a student, I had an one year internship experience as a system engineer in a semi-conductor company where I wrote Linux driver, tuned system performance, etc.. I was happy about this experience as it allowed me to deepen my understanding of the operating system and different low level things. And I thought "Em, I will continue in the embedded area after I graduate". At the end of my study, I am doing an another internship in web development, both front-end and back-end. And I also enjoys a lot the process of learning new things and making it work (Backbone, Node, socketio, etc..). Now, when I am looking for a software development position, I do not know what to apply! All I know is that I want a job which allows me to keep up with the trends instead of repeating. But besides this, I've no idea what specific type of job I want to do. Turn back to embedded system? Continue with web development? Change to other promising areas(data mining)? All these development positions makes no big difference to me. But I think this is not good and I need some criteria at choosing. So I am looking for advice and I would really appreciate if you can share your experience.

• how to recover lost partitions data

  I have a 2TB SATA drive that was being used as file storage on my UBUNTU computer. I was re-imaging my windows box so I used that drive to back up some files to it. I did this by taking the drive from my windows PC and putting it in my UBUNTU PC, mounted it and copied the files over. After the windows refresh I thought it would be easier to take the 2 TB drive and dock it in the external dock my Windows case has built in. Anyway it would recognize in BIOS but windows would not see it (because it was EXT3 or EXT4) so when I went into the disk manager it advised me the drive needed to be initialized. Me not thinking I initialized it as a GUID Partition table. Now it sees it as a blank drive, even in UBUNTU. I have done nothing else to write or change the drive. I was wondering if there is a qay to repair the old partitioning and get access to my files back? many thanks! EDIT: I followed the instructions in the link @kniwor sent me. • Ctrl-Alt-F1 never gives prompt

  When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 in my Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 (Santiago) I get a black screen with a blinking cursor, but I never get a login prompt. I can get back to my desktop with Ctrl+Alt+F7, and things work as normal. However, when I run sudo init 3 I get the same thing, but this time I am stuck at the screen and can't get back without a reboot. I'm not even sure where to start looking for the cause of this problem. Are the startup scripts that might be causing the problem or other system configurations that could lead to this? If this is not an known issue, what steps should I take to debug?

  I just came back from California where I had a little sentimental moment.With the great help from some former Sun colleagues we move the old SunSpace gear into a new data center in Santa Clara.We will re-purpose the hardware as a new development infrastructure to build integrated demos around Oracle WebCenter products, Business Applications and Social Services. now - I could not resist to restart the SunSpace applications and see if it still works. And hey - even though we had to re-IP the entire  stack (sun.com domain is gone) and with some little hacking (thanks to Apache reverse proxy) -  we got it back! Hey Max - now I just need to change your SSO hack to get login working again Hmm - I won't - but it is really nice to see it working again .. and it's time to switch it off and to work  on the next cool things .. Do you know Oracle WebCenter Sites (formely Fatwire)? Its Oracle's Web Experience Management Solution - a pretty cool technology and a very slick User Interface. I specially like the drag&drop functionality which allows non technical users to easily publish content.  Why do I mention it here ?  Because we will use the SunSpace gear to build cool  Oracle WebCenter Sites demos and proof of concepts integration  into Business Applications and Social Services  This is a sneak preview what we are working on.   I have a linux test machine which I would like to run a copy of a production webserver. This is a legacy application which does not use a property file for its server name. Throughout the application, the server name is hardcoded (example: open connection to myServer.myCompany.com). Is there any linux trick which I can use to redirect all requests for a certain host back to localhost? I know in Windows that I can add an entry to the hosts file and have it redirect back to localhost. How do I do this in linux?

• Lenovo Windows 8 EFI restore from image

  First time here. I have bought e530 with windows 8 and the first hour of work with it i have a problem. I have ssd with windows 7 which i want to use with my new e530. I have made a sysprep of win 7 and installed ssd to the e530. The HDD which was inside e530 i want to use as second hdd instead of my DVD Drive. I connected this HDD through usb-to-sata adapter to copy some files from ssd to the hdd. Unfortunately it didn't see the file system on the HDD (but first time i have booted to it and first boot into Windows 8) I've made some mistakes and i corrupt the filesystem on the hdd. I tried bunch of tricks to recover the GPT, but it didn't work. I have managed to recover the Lenovo_Recovery partition to my ssd using recovery tools. And now I'm stuck, with this new things to me - EFI, GPT, etc i don't how this stuff works, and i have been trying to understand this for hours - but nothing seems to work. I want to restore the Windows 8 to the hdd, so it is there alive. SYSTEM_DRV is EFI partition, so I don't understand why it doesn't boot, it has files needed inside. Can anybody tell me what should be done to make it boot to recovery console or smth like that? How to restore the Windows 8 from the Lenovo_Recovery install.wim image? As I understand I have all the files where they should be, but why it doesn't work? How to troubleshoot such things? Also, if somebody has good link where EFI booting process is explained in details that would be great. Cause i still don't understand how it knows what partition to boot?

• Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal and AMD 12.11 Beta Driver

  I'm using a Quantal AMDx64 install and a XFX Radeon HD5850 video card. I first enabled restricted drivers through additional drivers, but it resulted in breaking Unity and Compiz (I can only see my wallpaper and shortcuts. But the terminal still works and Nautilus too, however, without Close/Maximize/Minimize and slower). Then I uninstalled it and everything went back to normal. Then I installed it via terminal (12.10 version), and the result was the same. Then I downloaded it via ATI's web site (12.11 beta) and installed the .run file using the terminal, but the result was yet again the same. Then I went to the terminal and entered these commands: sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* - It said it had nothing to uninstall sudo rm /ect/x11/xorg.conf - No such directory sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg sudo startx sudo cp/ect/x11/xorg.conf.orig /ect/x11/xorg.conf - Also, no such directory sudo aticonfig --initial sudo reboot Then, I was presented with the log in screen, but when I tried to login (with my account), it flashed a black screen and then threw me back. Guest account still works (without unity and compiz, tough) and I can still use TTY. And I also got the "AMD Testing Only" watermark. Then I figured that I should stop messing with the terminal and get help before I unleashed Apocalypse XD. Side notes: My Ubuntu is installed on a ext4 partition with 60GB, and I dual boot with Windows 7 (at least for now). My internet is a 50kbps 3G-ish, so downloading even small files is a pain, let alone a video driver. I would rather not reinstall the O.S., it was a herculean task to download everything I had in there, and I have very little free disk space for backups. I'm still new to Ubuntu (I know some basic commands), and I don't know how to debug, so please, be patient XD And using Windows, my internet is even slower (is that possible?), so it kind of leaves a torture aftertaste xD. So, if you guys could answer quickly, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. If you need any info, just ask (and explain how to get it XD).

• Restore data from one Windows edition to another

  I have a Swedish Windows 7 Home Premium on my PC, and I really want to change system language to English. I know that Home Premium can't change system language (only W7 Ultimate does that), so I consider buying an English version and make a clean install. However I do have many settings, programs etc that I don't want to lose. I therefore have two questions: Can I take a backup of my Swedish W7 Home Premium, install the English W7 Home Premium and then restore everything back to normal, except the system language is now English? Can I take a backup of my Swedish W7 Home Premium, install W7 Ultimate and then restore everything back to normal (now with the option to change system language)? Thanks!

• How do you redirect pages from a subdirectory up one level to the root directory

  I have recently moved all the content on my website from being in the www.mysite.com/shop directory to being in the root directory. This means that now I need to redirect any request to visit a page with the /shop directory back to the same page in the root directory eg. www.mysite.com/shop/categories/washroom to www.mysite.com/categories/washroom This needs to happen with all pages in my site that were previously using the /shop directory. The closest thing to a solution that I have found so far is the following code RedirectMatch ^/shop/.* http://www.mysite.com/ however this redirects all pages back to the homepage instead of to the relevant matching page without the /shop. Can someone please point me in the right direction, or if this has already been answered in here can you please post the link to the answer.

• Do I have to reinstall Mac OS in case something goes wrong during a Windows Boot Camp install?

  I have a Macbook laptop running Snow Leopard, there's absolutely no information on the laptop, just a few unimportant files on it, I wanted to use Boot Camp Assistant (version 3) to create a partition and install Windows on it to run Windows alongside Mac OS. My CD/DVD drive doesn't work at all so I'm gonna have to mount Windows on a USB stick and install it from there. My question is, when I start Boot Camp it asks me to back up my files but I have nothing to back up, I was just wondering, in case I go through with the Windows install and something goes wrong do I have to reinstall Snow Leopard? My Snow Leopard install DVD can't be read by the laptop that's why I ask, I wouldn't know what to do if I had to reinstall it.

• How to be Agile when new work keeps affecting completed work?

  The project I'm working on is to re-skin an existing website. The functionally will stay the same, its just the styles that are changing. The HTML is not changing, I'm only modifying the CSS files. The site is pretty complex. There are dozens of pages. Users can be logged in and have a number of different roles. Depending on their role the content of the page and what pages they are allowed to see varys. We're using GIT and Github. I'm trying to write CSS that works as components. So when the same form elements, headings, etc appear on multiple pages they are already styled and are consistent. Most of time this is working well. Sadly the format and class names in the HTML are at times messy and unpredictable. When I fix something on one page it can break another. The job is also harder as no one knows exactly all the variations that are possible due to the user roles. As such I'm continuously finding new variations as I go along. I'm making headway by putting a lot of comments in my CSS. If I need to remove a CSS rule Ill comment it out so I can still see it with the chrome dev tools, and ill put a comment in the CSS saying why I removed it and for what page this was done. This means that if on another page I'm about to add add the rule to fix a different problem, there is more of a chance I will see how this would break the first page. This allows me to either find a different solution that will work for both pages, or I can make the override page specific. This has been working quite well for me. If I had complete free reign and the only deadline was to finish the project by the end then this method would be fine. However my manager is trying to mitigate risk by breaking the work into areas to be completed per sprint. This is counter to how I have been approaching things as something like my typography styles will affect all other pages on the site. The other issue is that the different stakeholders want to sign off each section as I go along. However once I've finished a section it may change if I change CSS that affects it and also affects a new section I'm working on. I've asked that the stakeholders have a quick unofficial sign off in stages (eg per sprint), and have the final official sign off at the end of the project, but this is being met with resistance. I do understand why it would be higher risk to do this, but the only way to guarantee that a signed off section will not change is to make ALL future changes page specific. In addition to this I'm being told that all work that I push to the Git repo should be ready to go live, and as such should not contain any code comments. This is risky for me as I wont know until I've finished the site if I will ever benefit from these comments or not. Has anyone else been in a similar situation and managed to find a compromise that worked for my development approach and also the desires of management and stakeholders to have a more Agile approach? A more Agile workflow works great when you can break the work into components and know that once something is done it wont be affected by future work. However the nature of this project makes this hard to achieve.

  I have an Access database on my server. We split it up and use the front-end database for search data and adding new records or reports in local computer. If we update or add a new record, that writes to the back-end of database. I want to use this database in the other building with other servers. Also, those servers have no direct connection. How can I sync both back-end databases to keep the database data up to date? These details may be useful: It's a big amount of data - about 25,750 client records. I guess there are more than 25 tables at 80 MB.

• Windows/global setting to allow only SSL when on public Wifi?

  Rather than going through each of my apps and modifying settings, or tweaking individual browser settings (I use three different browsers) or just being careful not to type non-SSL URLs into the web address bar, is there a solution at the Windows level that will prevent anything from connecting to the web from my laptop unless it's using SSL? I also have mini apps installed like Gmail checker, etc that connect to the web of their own volition using my usernames, passwords and such, so it goes beyond just web browsers. The reason I'm asking is I want to work securely on the general Internet when on public Wifi (e.g. coffee shops) without a lot of hassle or having to remember everything that needs to be locked down. When I'm back home I want to go back to full access mode using any kind of protocol on the web. If a website doesn't support SSL when I'm out in public then I just don't surf it - that's not a worry to me.

• Windows 7 - all usb devices go to sleep im idle mode

  A strange thing happened after a few updates to the system: Intel rapid storage SSD firmware update Intel Ethernet adapter update GPU Intel update When the computer turns off the screen (after 5 min), an unknown time later, all the USB devices stop working. Sound card Mouse Keybord etc. I can't turn them back on, so I can't wake up the screen or do anything except turn the computer off and back on. I checked my power save profile and all is OK there. I changed in the Device Manager, the Allow USB to sleep in all the hubs. How can I fix this??

  Hi! I have InternetSharing enabled on my Mac (Leopard), so that my iPhone can get access to the internet in a wireless environment. Every second or so, I get the following error sent to system.log: 7/2/09 2:12:33 PM natd[20861] failed to write packet back (No route to host) Sometimes, the error is 7/2/09 2:12:33 PM natd[20861] failed to write packet back (Host is down) Is there some way to either fix the problem that is causing these errors (which I'm guessing is because the iPhone doesn't maintain a wireless connection when not in use) or to prevent them from being logged? • What is the best practice for reading a large number of custom settings from a text file?

  So I have been looking through some code I wrote a few years ago for an economic simulation program. Each simulation has a large number of settings that can be saved to a file and later loaded back into the program to re-run the same/similar simulation. Some of the settings are optional or depend on what is being simulated. The code to read back the parameters is basically one very large switch statement (with a few nested switch statements). I was wondering if there is a better way to handle this situation. • No Unity after ubuntu 12.10 upgrade

  After I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04, there was low graphics and no Unity. Just the mouse and the wallpaper. So, I got into the terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T, launched Chrome and searched for a solution. As a result, I tried this: sudo sh amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.run It did not work. Then I tried this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:makson96/fglrx sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install fglrx-legacy It did not work too. I removed the repository, got back the the xorg version to 1.13, and tried this: sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglRx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* xorg-driver-fglrx sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core It did return the screen resolution back, but still no Unity. • Equalizing Agent and Master Nagios on state change alone

  We have a setup where there are distributed Nagios running on multiple sites and are equalizing their data to the main Nagios server. The problem is it sends back the data to main Nagios server no matter if there is a state change in host or service. Is it possible to configure the slave Nagios to check the service/Host every 5 sec but send back the data only if there is a state change. Currently it is implemented by Obsess Over Hosts/Service which always runs the command which will equalize. Nagios version is 3 I am no administrator but a developer so I don't know the exact jargon so please bare with me.

• Random greyed unresponsive screen on netbook

  I love my Asus Eee PC 1000 Ubuntu 12.04 netbook, but I have a little problem. As I use it, the screen will randomly turn grey and become unresponsive. I can then only wait, until perhaps 10-60 secs. later, when I can interact again. Only the bar at the top of my screen retains its colour throughout. I thought it might be Firefox, as I have a lot of tabs open. I installed Chromium, used it instead, and the problem remained. A while back I upgraded from 1 to 2 Gb RAM. So, I thought recently, maybe I should increase the swap-space. I have 738Mb of 7.2Gb free on root; and 2Gb of 28Gb free on my home drive. I bought a 32 Gb SD Card and assigned 4Gb to swap space. cat /proc/swaps reports that the partition is being used. Alas the problem remains. Does anyone know what's wrong with my machine? The SD Card has changed my machine somewhat, but the greying still happens. I ran free -m shortly after another episode, and received: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2004 1731 272 0 370 769 -/+ buffers/cache: 591 1412 Swap: 4073 0 4073 Update: Using 'top', I can see that compiz uses about 43% of the CPU (#1 position) when the greying occurs. After the greying, compiz drops back down to its usual 8% of CPU.

• cd ~ dumps me in a seemingly empty directory

  This is on a Linux mint box. I'm told everywhere to use the command cd ~ To switch to the root directory before doing some command line magic. For some reason though, it dumps me in a directory named ~ where ls gives nothing and I can't get back to my home directory; I have to restart the terminal session to get out of the empty root directory. I'm positive that everything is just hidden to me, but even as a super-user I can't get the folders to show themselves. I usually just fall back to using a graphical file browser to roam those forbidden files, but I've recently just been shut out of my root directory, and the machine refuses to allow me to change the permissions on the stupid thing even when I type the root password in. It may just be some over-rigorous end-user shielding on the part of the mint team, but it's getting to be really frustrating now.

• OSX Dirve dropped out of RAID 5 Array?

  I had a drive "Fail" and drop out of our raid 5 array... After reboot the drive came back up, but its "Roaming". How do I re-integrate it back into the RAID 5? Right now I have no redundancy with only 2 disks in the array. The migrate RAID Set feature of RAID Utility seems to want to crate a RAID 0 only?
