• What sort of object is this and how to use it?

  What would be the correct name for this type of array? There are 3 main sections and 4 sub-parts consisting of "issuedTime" "text" "url" and "validToTime", how do you start to convert this to an object? If there was only 1 main section, it would be fairly simple to do however with 3 main parts and no identification for each main section has me scratching my head as where to start. Any advise appreciated. • ASP.NET UpdatePanel PostBacks

  I created a marker interface: public interface ISupportAJAXPostsBacks{} I added it to my Page.. public partial class MyWebForm : PageBase, ISupportAJAXPostsBacks I have this check in my PageBase class... if(this is ISupportAJAXPostsBacks) { ... do some stuff ... } If I step through via the debugger, "this is ISupportAJAXPostsBacks" evaluates to true for the initial page load, but evaluates to false when an UpdatePanel posts back on that same page. (scratches head) What is happening under the covers to cause this and what can I do about it?

• Standard Workflow when working with JPA

  I am currently trying to wrap my head around working with JPA. I can't help but feel like I am missing something or doing it the wrong way. It just seems forced so far. What I think I know so far is that their are couple of ways to work with JPA and tools to support this. You can do everything in Java using annotations, and let JPA (whatever implementation you decide to use) create your schema and update it when changes are made. You can use a tool to reverse engineer you database and generate the entity classes for you. When the schema is updated you have to regenerate these classes, or manually update them. There seems to be drawbacks to both, and benefits to both (as with all things). My question is in an ideal situation what is the standard workflow with JPA? Most schemas will require updates during the maintenance phase and especially during the development phase, so how is this handled?

• Making archive from files with same names in different directories

  Hi, I have some files with same names but under different directories. For example, path1/filea, path1/fileb, path2/filea, path2/fileb,.... What is the best way to make the files into an archive? Under these directories, there are other files that I don't want to make into the archive. Off the top of my head, I think of using Bash, probably ar, tar and other commands, but am not sure how exactly to do it. Renaming the files seems to make the file names a little complicated. I tend to keep the directory structure inside the archive. Or I might be wrong. Other ideas are welcome! Thanks and regards!

  G'day guys, Trying currently to finish up a bit of homework I'm working on, and having an issue where I'm trying to apply map across a function that accepts multiple inputs. so in the case I'm using processList f (x:xs) = map accelerateList f xs x xs processList is given a floating value (f) and a List that it sorts into another List Accelerate List takes a floating value (f) a List and a List Object through which it returns another List Object I know my Accelerate List code is correct, but I cannot for the life of me get the syntax for this code working: processList :: Float -> [Object] -> [Object] accelerate f [] = [] accelerate f [x] = [(accelerateForce f x x)] accelerate f (x:xs) = map accelerateList f xs x xs Any ideas? • Issue with plotting daily data using ggplot

  I tried to plot daily data from 9 variables in ggplot, but the graph I get cannot handle the date variable properly. The x axis is unreadable and its impossible to read the plot. I'm guessing there's an issue with the handling of dates. • Updating a table with the max date of another table

  In Oracle 10g, I need to update Table A with data from Table B. Table A has LOCATION, TRANDATE, and STATUS. Table B has LOCATION, STATUSDATE, and STATUS I need to update the STATUS column in Table A with the STATUS column from Table B where the STATUSDATE is the max date upto and including the TRANDATE for that LOCATION (basically, I'm getting the status of the location at the time of a particular transaction). I have a PL/SQL procedure that will do this but I KNOW there must be a way to get it to work using an analytic, and I've been banging my head too long. Thanks!

• Should I design the application or model (database) first?

  I am getting ready to start building a new web project in my spare time to bring to fruition an idea that has been bouncing around my head for a while. I have never gotten down whether I am better off first building the model and then the consuming application or the other way around. What are the best practices? What would you build first and why? I imagine that in general the application should generally drive the model, however the application like many websites really doesn't do much without the model. For some reason I find it easier at times to think in terms of the model since the application is really just actions on the model. Is this a poor way of thinking about things? What advantages/disadvantages does each option have?

• How to make a form using ajax, onchange event, reload to SAME page

  I've been studying this for a while and I'm not sure if I'm going about this the right way because every form I setup according to examples, it doesn't do what I need. I need to setup a form that will: set session when you select from dropdown menu not reload/refresh page (i've read that using AJAX solves this) submit and stay on SAME page (confused because most AJAX examples send it to different process.php page which is supposedly "invisible" but it doesn't "stay" on the same page, it redirects. Basically, client selects quantity of 1 to 10. If they select "2"... it does NOT reload the page.. but it DOES set a session[quantity]=2. Should be simple... but do I POST to same page as form? or POST to different page and it somehow redirects? Also, one test I did it kept pasting my "echo session[quantity]" down the page like 7, 2, 3, 5, etc. etc. each time instead of replacing it. I would paste code but it's all over the place and I'm hoping for direction on which methods to use. Feel I need to start all over again. • Trouble with Canvas rendering in Safari/Opera

  Been banging my head against this one for a while, and figured I'd turn to the experts for some advice. I've made a jQuery snippet that grabs the values from a table and plots them in a line graph on a canvas element (also generated by the JS). All's well in Firefox and Chrome, but Safari and Opera aren't displaying the plotted points. I've reviewed in Firebug, Web Inspector debugger, JSLint, and checked the markup with the w3 validator, but still can't find anything glaringly obvious. Any chance one of you guys could help me out? • Operational Transformation library?

  I'm looking for a library that would allow me to synchronize text in real-time between multiple users (ala Google Docs). I've stumbled upon Operational Transformation, which seems to fit my needs. Having said that, I understand the gist of OT, but not the math nor implementation of OT. Thus, I was wondering if there was a drag'n'drop Javascript library that would hook into a text area, generate the transforms, then allow me to apply those transformations onto another client? (I've gotten the Etherpad source, but I can't make head or tails out of it. If anyone could point out how to leverage on Etherpad's OT implementation, that'll be great too!)

• jQuery Validation plugin: prompt for override

  I have a jQuery form that has validation of a sort. It is a data entry screen with two 'recommend ranges', one is 36-84, the other 50-300. The business rules call for the values to be either blank or greater than zero, but to prompt for confirmation if the values are outside of the range listed above. I have seen some other threads that talk about setting the class="cancel" on the submit button. From what I can tell, this will simply disable the validation. I need to prompt for a "do you want to continue, yes or no?" and if no stop the submit, if yes, continue. Below is an example from the book Pro jQuery. By default the top row needs to be between 10 and 20 to submit. • Decorator Pattern - Multiple wrappers or quantity property?

  I'm making use of the decorator pattern for one of the first times, as part of a Uni project. As far as I can see, the pattern seems to be meant more for adding functionality in a modular manner, however we've been taught it with uses such as a coffee or pizza maker, where the object has modular components that are added - changing properties rather than behaviour. I'm trying to make the most of both uses, however I've come up with a question. In the example in the book we're using (Head First Design Patterns), the pattern is used in a coffee shop creating different coffees. So, for example, milk, froth, sugar, sprinkles are all decorators. How would you implement a system that used the same decorator multiple times (for example, a coffee with two sugars)? Would you rewrap the coffee, or give sugar a quantity property? Or (as i'm starting to suspect) would this never be an issue as the pattern isn't designed to be used this way?

• How do I create a patch compared to another changeset in Eclipse?

  I started working on an open source project that is using CVS where I want to submit patches. After having edited some files, I created a patch from the files that Eclipse showed as changed. Now I need to change a file for the second patch (that file is already in the first changeset), but the changes from the first changeset shouldn´t be in the second changeset. Therefore, I would need to somehow tell Eclipse that it should compare the changes to the result of the first changeset instead of to the CVS head revision. How can I do that?

• Idioms for a three-state toggle?

  I have a table column where each row has one of three states, and the purpose of the row is to offer manipulation AND display of this property with three states. My current development view is to have three tightly packed radio buttons with labels at the head of the columns (and every 50 rows or so) and onClick they send an AJAX request and thar she blows. This is fugly. Is there a standard idiom for a control like this? I'm currently mocking up something similar to the iPhone on/off toggle, but with a "middle" state. Any input would be welcome.

  I apologize if that title is confusing. This question may be a result of lack of coffee and/or sleep, but my mind is not working correctly right now. Anyways, I have an inheritance tree like such (I know the architecture isn't ideal): BaseClass GeneralForm : Inherits BaseClass SpecificForm : Inherits GeneralForm And an object like so: MyItem MySpecificItem : Inherits MyItem I have Items As List (Of MyItem) as a property in BaseClass. I would like for SpecificForm to somehow override Items to return type List (Of MySpecificItem). I feel like this is easy to do, but again, my head is spinning and I can't think straight at the moment. Thank you so much in advance.

• What are the correct steps to capture data with uploadify?

  Does anyone have a demo of using uploadify with additional fields and saving to database? The site's examples don't explain the process in depth and I am not familiar with jquery. I don't know why but I can't get my head around how too integrate the two. I have the demo working and I have my app which uses traditional php/html forms working. I need to conduct basic form collection with uploadify in the mix. Collect data and check data with feedback and then process into database and post back a confirmation. How do I feed information back to the uploadify form if there is a problem from the upload.php file? How do I access my data in the upload.php file? how do I redirect the upload page to a confirmation page after a succeeful upload?
