• Accessing localhost via IIS 6.1 on Windows 7 very slow

  (I've checked here already for similiar questions, and haven't found one that's exactly the same - hence I'm posting a new question) I'm currently running an ASP.NET application on IIS 7.0 on Windows 7. When I access this application on Internet Explorer (either 6, 7 or 8) it is incredible slow and often fails to load at all. There are messages at the bottom saying: Waiting for http://localhost/....... or sometimes waiting for about:blank (I've read that this can be a virus, but I've run all the usual checks and it's not). constantly, but it returns with the usual: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" I've also tried this by using 127.0.0.1 and the machine name, with the same results. I've tried the same application on the latest Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera and they all work fine. I've also installed the same application on a Windows Server 2003 machine, and it all works fine via Internet Explorer. Soes anyone have any ideas why this doesn't work with Internet Explorer and yet does with other browsers?

• Strange CSS Positioning issue with a fader on a responsive site

  I'm developing a prototype responsive wordpress theme version of my homepage. I'm running into issues with the fader on the homepage. http://dev.epicwebdesign.ca/epicblog/ When the image switches, it uses position:absolute to overlay the pictures, then goes back to position:relative. I need to make the absolute be relative to the bottom left corner of the menu instead of the top left corner of #wrap so it doesn't overlap. I tried putting it in a container div like this: http://wiki.orbeon.com/forms/doc/contributor-guide/browser#TOC-Absolutely-positioned-box-inside-a-box-with-overflow:-auto-or-hidden but that doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? There are major CSS compatibility issues in IE, try it in chrome. It should look similar to http://epicwebdesign.ca. When the browser window is shrunk horizontially, the whole theme compensates.

• Set Focus After Last Character in Text Box

  I have 3 text boxes for a phone number. As the user types, it automatically moves from one textbox to the next. When the user presses backspace, I can move focus to the previous text box. The problem is that in IE, focus is set to the beginning of the text box. • Dynamically changing background color of specific text without changing other attributes

  I've written a chrome extension to find text on a page based on a regex query. When text is matched, I wrap the matched text in a <span> tag that has the class highlight where highlight only changes the background color to yellow. The issue is that sometimes there are already styles applied to <span> tags in a webpage. For example, the webpage might have this defined: span { font-size: 200%; } So when I insert my <span> tag in another <span> tag, the font-size is actually 400%. Is there an easy way for my code to just change certain properties of the text, like the background color, without applying the webpage's styles twice?

• jQuery 1.4.2 - Ajax & increasing IE 8 Process Handles

  Hi, I'm requesting every second some data over $.ajax. $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "ServiceEndpointUrl", data: "", success: function(result) { ... Do Work ... } } } } }); This code leads into an continuous growing number of handles in IE 8 (Windows 7 / verified with Task Manager & Process Explorer). Firefox & Chrome does not have this problem. This page is displayed all day long - this leads into thousands of handles & will sometimes crash the complete browser. My workaround is to reload the complete page every hour - but this can't be the solution ;-) Any suggestions how to "close" these Ajax-Handles? thx

• Issues with Firefox 3.6 & SWFObject 2.2

  I've searched the net for a solution but still haven't found one yet. I'm on Mac OSX and I use FlashBuilder. I try to publish a movie with the values of 100% for the width & the height. These are the values I use both in SWFObject and the CSS. Flash doesn't display in Firefox but displays on Opera, Chrome & Safari. SWFObject test suite displays fine though! I've tried to replicate the test suite settings but it doesn't work :( The only way I can get the movie to display in Firefox is by setting the height value to a fixed pixel size in the flash content div, which defeats the purpose of using percentage values in the first place :) I've tried most recommendations such as putting the script in the head tag as well as a few others but nothing works except setting a fixed height size in the CSS. Help would be most appreciated! ;)

  So I am using the HTML5 date input type, primary to trigger the 'wheels' in iOS. Everything is working fine in ie7-9 Chrome and FF. But Safari for OSX is very upset. It sees the need to add little 'up and down' buttons to the right hand side and generally mess up my visual stylings. My attempt to fix this, is to change the date inputs back to text inputs for desktop browsers, and leave it as date inputs for mobile: unless device.is # 'device' is a lib I use to detect mobile browsers dateFields = $ 'input[type="date"]' dateFields.attr 'type', 'text' #this fails dateFields.datepicker() dateFields.on 'keyup', (e) -> e.preventDefault() $(@).val '' Beyond altering the input type with js, I am at a loss for how to fix this little bugger.   How do i make my vb.net application (running on intranet) compatible with all the browsers. The problem is all the text boxes and drop downs size varies when I browse the application in different browsers. For example when I browse in Chrome all the drop downs size changes and textbox becomes small.In IE8 all the dropdowns , comboboxes and the size of the grids gets changed. The combobox in firefox and IE 7 or later gets small in size.Is there any solution for this. And also I would like to add , the application works perfectly with IE6 only.

• Fastest tr:hover method

  What is the single fastest method for table row hover css change? I've tried jQuery (onmouseover/out) and CSS with tr:hover, but once I make my page fullscreen (1920x1200) the performance on my grid is getting just sluggish enough to give the entire page a feel of being sub-par. That's on a grid with 25 rows, and some spans and divs per row. I've tried IE and Google Chrome. Is there another, faster method? What is generally considered the fastest method across browsers for doing hover CSS changes?

• Mozilla Firefox border rendering

  Hi, I've come across a strange thing in Firefox, which has become a problem to me. It seems that Firefox renders borders thinner than other browsers. For example I have just a simple empty div element, and nothing else on the webpage, with a border set to width:3px. In all other browsers, such as IE, Opera, Chrome and Safari, the width looks the same and is in fact 3px wide. But in Firefox I noticed that the border width seemed thinner. So I checked the border width with Firebug, under the Computed tab - Box model. And yes as I suspected, the rendered border in Firefox is thinner. The border width that Firefox rendered is actually 2.2px and not the expected 3px. This small difference with Firefox completely messes up my design. Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone have a solution for this? Thanks in advance!

• Is there a way to enable Unicode characters in all browsers on Windows XP?

  I'd like to use unicode symbols within my website (especially Dingbats). Is there any way to enable this inside all (or at least some) browsers in Windows XP, without having the user to adjust any of his settings? I use the HTML5 doctype with the charset configured to UTF-8: <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <meta charset="utf-8" /> </head> <body></body> </html> The browsers recognize the charset correctly (even IE7). But no special characters are displayed. I only see an empty square box. This is the case for all of the following browsers: IE7, Safari 4, Firefox 3.5, Chrome 4.1, Opera 10.51. So, is there any way to configure to enable all (or most) unicode characters for browsers running on Windows XP?

• Pylons and Pisa (xhtml2pdf): blank page in IE

  I'm using pylons to serve a dynamically generated pdf document for reporting: my approach works in firefox & chrome (it displays the pdf inline if the plugin is available or otherwise downloads it) but IE (7 & 8) only show a blank page and doesn't prompt for download. IE correctly shows PDFs generated by other websites, though. Don't know if it matters but the page is accessed through HTTPS. My controller does the following: renders the source page through mako converts the html to pdf using pisa adds these headers to the response: Content-type: application/pdf and Content-disposition: inline; filename=file.pdf Do you have any suggestion? I seem to be stuck and cannot think of anything else to try.

  I'm trying to render a font using the css property @font-face , in Firefox, Chrome and Opera it works fine, but within Internet Explorer is just does not want to display correctly, and reverts back to another standard font.   What's the best way to detect event support in Firefox. Opera, Internet Explorer and Safari/Chrome all support eventName in object, but Firefox doesn't. My test case is this: javascript:alert("onclick" in document.createElement("a")) Which alerts true when entered into the address bar on the aforementioned browsers, and alerts false for Firefox. I figured out a solution using typeof on an event like so: var a = document.createElement("a"); a.setAttribute("onclick", ""); alert(typeof(a.onclick) == "function"); Is there a better method of detecting event support in Firefox?

• php database session handling problem in IE8!

  I've got an html page from where Im making this call periodically: function logon(id) { $.get("data.php", { action: 'online', userID: id}, function(data){ $("#msg").html(data); }); } What this does is it calls this SQL script in data.php: $sql = "update user_sessions set expires=(expires + 2) where userID = $userID"; mysql_query($sql, $conn) or die(mysql_error()); echo $sql; I can see by the echo that the sql syntax and values are correct, but THE CHANGES TO THE expires FIELD ARE NOT DONE, ONLY IN IE8!! It works fine in other ff, safari, chrome, ie6 and 7. There is nothing browser specific about making this sql call, but the user_sessions table is used to store PHP's sessions. Im only increasing the session expiry time when the call is made. What in IE8's session handling is preventing the session time from changing? Is there any caching or cookie problem that needs to be changed?

• Why is display:inline killing IE 8.0 performance?

  I have an image gallery based on this jQuery plugin: http://jqueryfordesigners.com/demo/slider-gallery.html This works really well in Firefox, Chrome and even IE 7.0, but when I try it with more than 50 images in IE 8.0 the performance is incredible slow. Just hovering over the thumbnail brings the CPU load to 100%. At first I thought it's a Javascript problem, so I used the IE profiler, but the results were normal. Next I checked the CSS and finally found the cause: .sliderGallery UL LI { display: inline; } This gets the thumbnails to align horizontally. If I chance it to display:block, performance is fine and the scroller is still working but obviously it looks funny, because the thumbs are aligned vertically. My questions: Why does IE 8 have this problem with many display:inline elements What can I do to solve it I'll gladly provide more information if necessary.

• Trouble with Canvas rendering in Safari/Opera

  Been banging my head against this one for a while, and figured I'd turn to the experts for some advice. I've made a jQuery snippet that grabs the values from a table and plots them in a line graph on a canvas element (also generated by the JS). All's well in Firefox and Chrome, but Safari and Opera aren't displaying the plotted points. I've reviewed in Firebug, Web Inspector debugger, JSLint, and checked the markup with the w3 validator, but still can't find anything glaringly obvious. Any chance one of you guys could help me out?   In print mode, I would like to render such a links: <a href="#targetPage">link</a> like this: <a href="#targetPage">link (page 11)</a> (suppose the target page is on 11. page in print preview). It is possible to add page number using counters to the page footer with plain CSS, but could I use this in more "the way I want it" way? • 302 Redirect to Images in IE8 do not render image

  I am helping migrate a legacy application. One of the requirements is we are able to handle requests for old images. What we have is: New site on new.com Old site on old.com Images to links (imported content) point to /imgs/cat.png however the actual image is hosted on old.com/assets/images/cat.png (for now). <img src="/imgs/cat.png"/> I setup a redirect for all png, jpg, jpeg, gif that 302's requests for new.com/imgs/(.*).(png|jpg|jpeg|gif) to http://old.com/assets/images/$1.$2 Everything works find in Chrome, Firefox and IE9 - however it was noted in IE8 the image does not render. Its possible that it has the same issue in IE7, 6 and 5.5 however I have not been able to test this. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix? I tried setting the contentType header on the response of the 302's to image/(png|jpg|jpeg|gif) and this did not have any impact. Any insight would be appreciated.

• How to programmatically launch a chromecast app from command line

  I want to launch a Chromecast app but NOT using the chrome extension or iOS or Android. Doing this from command line. I noticed that you can send a POST to your chromecast, and it will launch an app. For example if I do curl -H “Content-Type: application/json” http://CHROMECAST_IP:8008/apps/YouTube -X POST -d ‘v=oHg5SJYRHA0' Then it will start up youtube. But for some reason I can't do this with custom apps (in dev mode). I thought I'd be able to send a POST to http://CHROMECAST_IP:8008/apps/MY_REGISTERED_APP_ID, but no luck. I just get a 404 response. Hmmm... My app is just a simple webpage (it is not streamed media). I want to run a little headless server that starts my chromecast app everyday via a CRON task. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks :)
