  • Loops in ada and the implementation

    - by maddy
    HI all, Below is a piece of code shown and doubts are regarding the implementation of loops C := character'last; I := 1; K : loop Done := C = character'first; Count2 := I; Exit K when Done; C := character'pred(c); I := I + 1; end loop K; Can anyone please tell me what does 'K' stands for.I guess its not a variable.How does 'K' control the execution of the loop? Thanks Maddy

  • Is there any way to set or code breakpoints conditionally?

    - by froadie
I've been wondering this for a while - is there a way to code/program breakpoints...? Conditionally? For example, can I specify something like - "when this variable becomes this value, break and open the debugger"? (Would be quite useful, especially in long loops when you want to debug loop execution of a late loop value.) I suppose this may be IDE-specific since debugging is implemented differently in different IDEs... I'd be interested to know how to do this in any IDE, but specifically in Eclipse and Visual Studio.

  • What programming language best bridges the gap between pseudocode and code?

    - by Kai
As I write code from now on, I plan to first lay out everything in beautiful, readable pseudocode and then implement the program around that structure. If I rank the languages that I currently know from easiest to most difficult to translate, I'd say: Lisp, Python, Lua, C++, Java, C I know that each language has its strength and weaknesses but I'm focusing specifically on pseudocode. What language do you use that is best suited for pseudocode-to-code? I always enjoy picking up new languages. Also, if you currently use this technique, I'd love to hear any tips you have about structuring practical pseudocode. Note: I feel this is subjective but has a clear answer per individual preference. I'm asking this here because the SO community has a very wide audience and is likely to suggest languages and techniques that I would otherwise not encounter.

  • Code Profiling in the Windows Sidebar Environment

    - by Matt
Does anyone know of a way I can code-profile my Windows Sidebar Gadget? I've played around with the code-profiling tool in IE8's "Developer Tools" and the code-profiling included in Visual Studio 2010, but I can't find a way to include the System.* API, which my gadget relies on (as it is standard in the Sidebar environment). The gadget also relies on cross-domain AJAX requests; which is normally permitted in the Sidebar environment. By code-profiling I primarily mean: Function call count Function execution time Any ideas would be much appreciated. Regards, Matt

  • Linux - Create ftp account with read/write access to only 1 folder

    - by Gublooo
Hey guys.... I have never worked on linux and dont plan on working on it either - The only command I probably know is "ls" :) I am hosting my website on Eapps and use their cpanel to setup everything so never worked with linux. Now I have this one time case - where I need to provide access to a contractor to fix the CSS issues on my website. He basically needs FTP (read/write) access to certain folders. At a high level - this is my code structure /home/webadmin/example.com/html/images /css /js /login.php /facebook.php /home/webadmin/example.com/application/library /views /models /controllers /config /bootstrap.php /home/webadmin/example.com/cgi-bin I want the new user to be able to have access to only these folders /home/webadmin/example.com/html/js /home/webadmin/example.com/html/css /home/webadmin/example.com/application/views He should not be able to view even the content of other folders including files like bootstrap.php or login.php etc If any sys admins can help me set this account up - will really appreciate it. Thanks

  • Strange: Planner takes decision with lower cost, but (very) query long runtime

    - by S38
    Facts: PGSQL 8.4.2, Linux I make use of table inheritance Each Table contains 3 million rows Indexes on joining columns are set Table statistics (analyze, vacuum analyze) are up-to-date Only used table is "node" with varios partitioned sub-tables Recursive query (pg = 8.4) Now here is the explained query: WITH RECURSIVE rows AS ( SELECT * FROM ( SELECT r.id, r.set, r.parent, r.masterid FROM d_storage.node_dataset r WHERE masterid = 3533933 ) q UNION ALL SELECT * FROM ( SELECT c.id, c.set, c.parent, r.masterid FROM rows r JOIN a_storage.node c ON c.parent = r.id ) q ) SELECT r.masterid, r.id AS nodeid FROM rows r QUERY PLAN ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CTE Scan on rows r (cost=2742105.92..2862119.94 rows=6000701 width=16) (actual time=0.033..172111.204 rows=4 loops=1) CTE rows -> Recursive Union (cost=0.00..2742105.92 rows=6000701 width=28) (actual time=0.029..172111.183 rows=4 loops=1) -> Index Scan using node_dataset_masterid on node_dataset r (cost=0.00..8.60 rows=1 width=28) (actual time=0.025..0.027 rows=1 loops=1) Index Cond: (masterid = 3533933) -> Hash Join (cost=0.33..262208.33 rows=600070 width=28) (actual time=40628.371..57370.361 rows=1 loops=3) Hash Cond: (c.parent = r.id) -> Append (cost=0.00..211202.04 rows=12001404 width=20) (actual time=0.011..46365.669 rows=12000004 loops=3) -> Seq Scan on node c (cost=0.00..24.00 rows=1400 width=20) (actual time=0.002..0.002 rows=0 loops=3) -> Seq Scan on node_dataset c (cost=0.00..55001.01 rows=3000001 width=20) (actual time=0.007..3426.593 rows=3000001 loops=3) -> Seq Scan on node_stammdaten c (cost=0.00..52059.01 rows=3000001 width=20) (actual time=0.008..9049.189 rows=3000001 loops=3) -> Seq Scan on node_stammdaten_adresse c (cost=0.00..52059.01 rows=3000001 width=20) (actual time=3.455..8381.725 rows=3000001 loops=3) -> Seq Scan on node_testdaten c (cost=0.00..52059.01 rows=3000001 width=20) (actual time=1.810..5259.178 rows=3000001 loops=3) -> Hash (cost=0.20..0.20 rows=10 width=16) (actual time=0.010..0.010 rows=1 loops=3) -> WorkTable Scan on rows r (cost=0.00..0.20 rows=10 width=16) (actual time=0.002..0.004 rows=1 loops=3) Total runtime: 172111.371 ms (16 rows) (END) So far so bad, the planner decides to choose hash joins (good) but no indexes (bad). Now after doing the following: SET enable_hashjoins TO false; The explained query looks like that: QUERY PLAN ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CTE Scan on rows r (cost=15198247.00..15318261.02 rows=6000701 width=16) (actual time=0.038..49.221 rows=4 loops=1) CTE rows -> Recursive Union (cost=0.00..15198247.00 rows=6000701 width=28) (actual time=0.032..49.201 rows=4 loops=1) -> Index Scan using node_dataset_masterid on node_dataset r (cost=0.00..8.60 rows=1 width=28) (actual time=0.028..0.031 rows=1 loops=1) Index Cond: (masterid = 3533933) -> Nested Loop (cost=0.00..1507822.44 rows=600070 width=28) (actual time=10.384..16.382 rows=1 loops=3) Join Filter: (r.id = c.parent) -> WorkTable Scan on rows r (cost=0.00..0.20 rows=10 width=16) (actual time=0.001..0.003 rows=1 loops=3) -> Append (cost=0.00..113264.67 rows=3001404 width=20) (actual time=8.546..12.268 rows=1 loops=4) -> Seq Scan on node c (cost=0.00..24.00 rows=1400 width=20) (actual time=0.001..0.001 rows=0 loops=4) -> Bitmap Heap Scan on node_dataset c (cost=58213.87..113214.88 rows=3000001 width=20) (actual time=1.906..1.906 rows=0 loops=4) Recheck Cond: (c.parent = r.id) -> Bitmap Index Scan on node_dataset_parent (cost=0.00..57463.87 rows=3000001 width=0) (actual time=1.903..1.903 rows=0 loops=4) Index Cond: (c.parent = r.id) -> Index Scan using node_stammdaten_parent on node_stammdaten c (cost=0.00..8.60 rows=1 width=20) (actual time=3.272..3.273 rows=0 loops=4) Index Cond: (c.parent = r.id) -> Index Scan using node_stammdaten_adresse_parent on node_stammdaten_adresse c (cost=0.00..8.60 rows=1 width=20) (actual time=4.333..4.333 rows=0 loops=4) Index Cond: (c.parent = r.id) -> Index Scan using node_testdaten_parent on node_testdaten c (cost=0.00..8.60 rows=1 width=20) (actual time=2.745..2.746 rows=0 loops=4) Index Cond: (c.parent = r.id) Total runtime: 49.349 ms (21 rows) (END) - incredibly faster, because indexes were used. Notice: Cost of the second query ist somewhat higher than for the first query. So the main question is: Why does the planner make the first decision, instead of the second? Also interesing: Via SET enable_seqscan TO false; i temp. disabled seq scans. Than the planner used indexes and hash joins, and the query still was slow. So the problem seems to be the hash join. Maybe someone can help in this confusing situation? thx, R.

  • SDK for writing DVD's

    - by Matt Warren
I need to add DVD writing functionality to an application I'm working on. However it needs to be able to write out files that are being grabbed "live" from a camera, over a long period of time. I can't wait until all the files are captured before I start writing them to the DVD, I need to write them out in chunks as I go along. I've looked at IMAPI v2, but the main problems seems to be that you need to point it to all the files you plan to write out to disk before you start the burning process. I know it has to concept of "sessions", which means you can write to the DVD in several parts, before you finally "close" it. But I was wondering if there were any other DVD writing SDK's that allow you to be constantly writing files to a DVD and in particular files that are only in memory. It would be more efficient if I didn't have to write the captured images out to hard before they are burned to DVD. The solution needs to work under .NET on Windows XP and vista

  • XQuery - problem with recursive function

    - by H4mm3rHead
Hi all, Im new on this project and am going to write, what i thought was a simple thing. A recursive function that writes nested xml elements in x levels (denoted by a variable). So far I have come up with this, but keeps getting a compile error. Please note that i have to generate new xml , not query existing xml: xquery version "1.0"; declare function local:PrintTest($amount) { <test> { let $counter := 0 if ($counter <= $amount ) then local:PrintTest($counter) else return $counter := $counter +1 } </test> }; local:PrintPerson(3) My error is: File Untitled1.xquery: XQuery transformation failed XQuery Execution Error! Unexpected token - " ($counter <= $amount ) t" I never understood xquery, and cant quite see why this is not working (is it just me or are there amazingly few resources on the Internet concerning XQuery?)

  • Tool to convert inline C# into a code behind file

    - by Jon Jones
Hi I have a number of legacy web controls (ascx) that contains huge amounts of inline C#. The forms contain a number of repeated and duplicate code. Our first plan is to move the code into code behinds per file, then refactor etc... were doing this to upgrade the client to the latest version of their cms At the moment we are going to have to manually copy and paste from hundreds of files, create a code behind, copy the code, add the namespaces based on the client-side imports and then do any tidying up does anybody PLEASE know of a tool that can do the majority of this work for us ? Thanks

  • C#, WinForms: Which view type for periodically updated list?

    - by rdoubleui
I'm having an application, that periodically polls a web service (about every 10 seconds). In my application logic I'm having a List<Message> holding the messages. All messages have an id, and might be received out of order. Therefore the class implements the Comparable Interface. What WinForm control would fit to be regurarly updated (with the items in order). I plan to hold the last 500 messages. Should I sort the list and then update the whole form? Or is data binding approriate (concerning performance)?

  • JavaScript multithreading

    - by Krzysztof Hasinski
I'm working on comparison for several different methods of implementing (real or fake) multithreading in JavaScript. As far as I know only webworkers and Google Gears WorkerPool can give you real threads (ie. spread across multiple processors with real parallel execution). I've found the following methods: switch between tasks using yield() use setInterval() (or other non-blocking function) with threads waiting one for another use Google Gears WorkerPool threads (with plugin) use html5 web workers I read related questions and found several variations of the above methods, but most of those questions are old, so there might be a few new ideas. I'm wondering - how else can you achieve multithreading in JavaScript? Any other important methods? UPDATE: As pointed out in comments what I really meant was concurrency. UPDATE 2: I found information that Silverlight + JScript supports multithreading, but I'm unable to verify this. UPDATE 3: Google deprecated Gears: http://code.google.com/apis/gears/api_workerpool.html

  • x86 assembler question

    - by b-gen-jack-o-neill
Hi, I have 2 simple, but maybe tricky questions. Let´s say I have assembler instruction: MOV EAX,[ebx+6*7] - what I am curious is, does this instruction really actually translates into opcode as it stands,so computation of code in brackets is encoded into opcode, or is this just pseudo intruction for compiler, not CPU, so that compiler before computes the value in brackets using add mul and so, store outcome in some reg and than uses MOV EAX,reg with computed value? Just to be clear, I know the output will be the same. I am interested in execution. Second is about LEA instruction. I know what it does, but I am more interested wheather its real instruction, so compiles does not further change it, just make it into opcode as it stands, or just pseudo code for compiler to, again, first compute adress and than store it.

  • Twitter oauth_callback parameter being ignored!

    - by Astrofaes
Hi guys, I'm trying to get Twitter authentication working on my ASP.NET site. When you create the app on the Twitter website, you have to specify a callback URL, which for sake of argument, I have set to http://mydomain.com I've read the oAuth 1.0a spec, and to override this callback URL with your own custom one you have to send the oauth_callback parameter in the request_token phase (url-encoded of course). So my request URL looks like this: http://twitter.com/oauth/request_token?oauth_callback_url=http%3A%2F%2Fmydomain.com%2Ftwittercallback Supposedly, if all goes to plan, in your response data, you are supposed to receive a new parameter of oauth_callback_confirmed=true in addition to your token and token secret parameters. However, my response comes through as: oauth_token=MYTOKEN&oauth_token_secret=MYTOKENSECRET I know I haven't given you guys the greatest amount to go on, but I'm at my wits end as to why I am not receiving the oauth_callback_confirmed parameter. Without this, my application keeps defaulting back to the callback URL hard-coded on the Twitter website. Please if anyone could help me out, I will be eternally grateful! Thanks, A.

  • Rationale behind Python's preferred for syntax

    - by susmits
What is the rationale behind the advocated use of the for i in xrange(...)-style looping constructs in Python? For simple integer looping, the difference in overheads is substantial. I conducted a simple test using two pieces of code: File idiomatic.py: #!/usr/bin/env python M = 10000 N = 10000 if __name__ == "__main__": x, y = 0, 0 for x in xrange(N): for y in xrange(M): pass File cstyle.py: #!/usr/bin/env python M = 10000 N = 10000 if __name__ == "__main__": x, y = 0, 0 while x < N: while y < M: y += 1 x += 1 Profiling results were as follows: bash-3.1$ time python cstyle.py real 0m0.109s user 0m0.015s sys 0m0.000s bash-3.1$ time python idiomatic.py real 0m4.492s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.031s I can understand why the Pythonic version is slower -- I imagine it has a lot to do with calling xrange N times, perhaps this could be eliminated if there was a way to rewind a generator. However, with this deal of difference in execution time, why would one prefer to use the Pythonic version?

  • What next in the career map for a Lead QA Engineer

    - by chandran
I am a Lead QA Engineer in a Software company and at a stage in my career wherein i need to plan my next move. Option 1: The very obvious move would be to stay as a QA Lead and eventually become a QA Manager. But i don't see very good prospects/future after that. Or am i wrong? Option 2: I love programming/coding, though i haven't spent a whole lot of time on that. So a direct move to becoming a Software Developer is not possible. Will moving to Test Automation eventually lead me to development. Even so, am i looking at step-down in pay and career-level. Option 3: Moving to Product Management. Is this even possible and if so what would be the best approach. Appreciate all your responses in advance. Thanks.

  • sOperator as and generic classes

    - by abatishchev
I'm writing .NET On-the-Fly compiler for CLR scripting and want execution method make generic acceptable: object Execute() { return type.InvokeMember(..); } T Execute<T>() { return Execute() as T; /* doesn't work: The type parameter 'T' cannot be used with the 'as' operator because it does not have a class type constraint nor a 'class' constraint */ // also neither typeof(T) not T.GetType(), so on are possible return (T) Execute(); // ok } But I think operator as will be very useful: if result type isn't T method will return null, instead of an exception! Is it possible to do?

  • How to force oracle to use index range scan?

    - by wsb3383
Hi, all. I have a series of extremely similar queries that I run against a table of 1.4 billion records (with indexes), the only problem is that at least 10% of those queries take 100x more time to execute than others. I ran an explain plan and noticed that the for the fast queries (roughly 90%) Oracle is using an index range scan (on my created), while on the slow one, it's using a full index scan. Is there a way to force Oracle to do a an index range scan? Thanks!

  • Create iPhone app programmatically, in its entirety

    - by miorel
I recently became interested in iPhone app development, so I've been looking at online tutorials, and also reading a book, trying out the examples as I go along. I'm getting better, but one of the things I still find quite annoying about the usual development model is that I really have no idea what the SDK is really doing behind the scenes to make the app "work" because Apple protects me from this. For example, when I make connections on interface builder, this presumably corresponds to code being generated somewhere... Where that code is and what it does and how it works are not obvious (to me). So I'm wondering, is it possible to create an iPhone app entirely programmatically? That is, have execution start in some main method, which will then programmatically create any views, register event listeners, etc. And if yes, what are some good resources for something like this?

  • Why does Sql Server recommends creating an index when it already exist?

    - by Pierre-Alain Vigeant
I ran a very basic query against one of our table and I noticed that the execution plan query processor is recommending that we create an index on a column The query is SELECT SUM(DATALENGTH(Data)) FROM Item WHERE Namespace = 'http://some_url/some_namespace/' After running, I get the following message // The Query Processor estimates that implementing the following index could improve the query cost by 96.7211%. CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [<Name of Missing Index, sysname,>] ON [dbo].[Item] ([Namespace]) My problem is that I already have such index on that column: CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_ItemNamespace] ON [dbo].[Item] ( [Namespace] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, DROP_EXISTING = OFF, ONLINE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] Why is Sql Server recommending me to create such index when it already exist?

  • Launching Vim via Lua

    - by Keith Pimmel
I'm writing a simple little Lua commandline app that will build a static website. I'm storing my fragments in a sqlite database. Retrieving the data from the db is straightforward as is saving it; my question comes from editing the data. Is there an elegant way to pipe the data from Lua to vim? Can vim edit a memory buffer and return it? I was planning on launching the editor via os.execute('vim') but only after grabbing a temporary file handle and dumping the database output into that. I would like to have to avoid touching the filesystem that way but that is my contingency plan.

  • Configuration manager for PHP

    - by Jack
I am working on code re-factoring of configuration file loading part in PHP. Earlier I was using multiple 'ini' files but now I plan to go for single XML file which will be containing all configuration details of the project. Problem is, if somebody wants configuration file in ini or DB or anything else and not the default one (in this case XML), my code should handle that part. If somebody wants to go for other configuration option like ini, he will have to create ini file similar to my XML configuration file and my configuration manager should take care everything like parsing, storing in cache. For that I need a mechanism lets say proper interface for my configuration data where the underlying data store can be anything( XML, DB, ini etc) also I don't want it to be dependent on these underlying store and anytime in future this should be extensible to other file formats.

  • Macros no longer working in VS2005

    - by NPVN
I'm using VS2005 on Vista. I'm using some macros, but now they have suddenly stopped working. No error messages of any kind. I am not aware of having done anything that could trigger this. I have made sure that "Allow macros to run" is checked in Tools-Options-Addin/Macro Security. I have tried running the macros from a keyboard shortcut, from the Macro Explorer, and from the Macros IDE, all in vain: The little spinning icon displays shortly (<1 sec) and then disappears without the macro being executed. I have tried putting a breakpoint on the first line of the macro and then executing it from the main IDE, with no effect (the breakpoint isn't hit). I have tried the same from the Macro IDE: The state changes to "running", but the breakpoint isn't hit. I have to break the execution manually. Any ideas?

  • Compiling Scala scripts. How works scalac?

    - by Arturo Herrero
Groovy Groovy comes with a compiler called groovyc. For each script, groovyc generates a class that extends groovy.lang.Script, which contains a main method so that Java can execute it. The name of the compiled class matches the name of the script being compiled. For example, with this HelloWorld.groovy script: println "Hello World" That becomes something like this code: class HelloWorld extends Script { public static void main(String[] args) { println "Hello World" } } Scala Scala comes with a compiler called scalac. I don't know how it works. For example, with the same HelloWorld.scala script: println("Hello World") The code is not valid for scalac, because the compiler expected class or object definition, but works in Scala REPL interpreter. How is possible? Is it wrapped in a class before execution?

  • What happens to an ActiveX control (COleControl) after the call to OnDestroy() ?

    - by richj
I have an ActiveX control written in C++ that runs in Internet Explorer 8. Most of the time (approx 90%) when the tab or browser containing the control is closed, there is an access violation like this: The thread 'Win32 Thread' (0x1bf0) has exited with code 0 (0x0). Unhandled exception at 0x77b3b9fd in iexplore.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x65007408. The access violation occurs after the call to OnDestroy() but before the call to the control's destructor. The debug output says: No symbols are loaded for any call stack frame. The source code cannot be displayed. None of my code is present in the stacktrace, although perhaps the heap was corrupted at some earlier point during execution. What lifecycle events does an ActiveX control receive between the call to OnDestroy() and the control's destructor?
