• laptop does not boot

  I have hp probook 4520s lap. But now it does not boot. When I press switch on button fans are working but it shows black screen. HDD light just blink one or two times when start but it will not continue. And usually web cam light should blink one time when startup but it doesn't. I connect to different monitor but couldn't see a output. This lap bought 3 months before but it doesn't have international warranty. Therefore I can not do anything. If someone can provide any clue or suggestion that what happened and what should I do, appreciated. thank you.

• Windows xp : possible virus

  I think my son downloaded some thing from internet and possibly infect the computer. The Google chrome browser will not start any more and after an hour of using computer he gets some sort of blue screen saying that memory is being dumped. I don't want to format the hdd and reinstall at this time. Can I salvage the machine by some anti virus? Questions: 1. How do I detect what kind of virus do I have? 2.   I am considering getting a Hacom Mars II Dual Blade for use as a firewall in a data-center for one of my colocated solutions. As the 1U enclosure have two identical firewalls, I am intending to use one of the firewalls as the external firewall using packet-filtering and load balancer (balancing load for my front-end nodes), while using the second as the internal firewall (as an application gateway). But I have no experience with Hacom, or pfSense firewalls. They do look really good on paper, but how are they in practice ?

• Strange performance from RAID5 using WD RE4 disks

  I've noticed a bit of a performance issue with some WD RE4 drives I'm using under AMD's hardware RAID solution. First a bit of background: Environment: Windows 7 home premium x64 HDD's: 3x 1TB WD Raid Edition 4 in a RAID 5 setup with 128 kbyte stripe (2TB usable space) Testing Tool: HD Tune, process set to "High Priority" Processor: AMD Phenom II x6 1100T Ram: 16GB DDR3/1600mhz Motherboard: MSI 970A-G45 The image below pretty much depicts the issue I'm having. Every test has the same thing, a period of similar length where the performance drops to a few megabytes a second. This can't be a TLER issue as the purpose of RE4's is to work around that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I have setup a subdomain to proxy my plesk panel, but when saving pages I am getting 502 Bad Gateway error instead of a completion message. I am running CentOS 6. • How to securely delete files stored on a SSD?

  From a (very long, but definitely worth to read) article on SSDs: When you delete a file in your OS, there is no reaction from either a hard drive or SSD. It isn’t until you overwrite the sector (on a hard drive) or page (on a SSD) that you actually lose the data. File recovery programs use this property to their advantage and that’s how they help you recover deleted files. The key distinction between HDDs and SSDs however is what happens when you overwrite a file. While a HDD can simply write the new data to the same sector, a SSD will allocate a new (or previously used) page for the overwritten data. The page that contains the now invalid data will simply be marked as invalid and at some point it’ll get erased. So, what would be the best way to securely erase files stored on a SSD? Overwriting with random data as we are used to from hard disks (e.g. using the "shred" utility) won't work unless you overwrite the WHOLE drive...

For this, I use the following tutorial: http://carlton.oriley.net/blog/?p=31 After following it, I found in the logs that /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd.db couldn't be read. The file didn't exist. I used postmap hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd (http://postfix.state-of-mind.de/patrick.koetter/smtpauth/smtp_auth_mailservers.html) as root, but I get: postmap: fatal: open database /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd.db: Permission denied Why do I get this? But just found out that recently that I already have 2x2GB installed and should be 4GB in total. When I looked at the properties of my computer, It said "Installed Memory 2GB". I wonder why is that happening? Is the other ram broken?.. I never the computer casing since I bought. so I didn't realize that I already have 2 x 2gb ram. what can you advice. Thanks!

  Hello there! I don't want to force anybody to make it on behalf of me but trust me: i've looked hundreds of sites and i can't find a good starting point for this. I have 4x500Gb HDD's which i want to set up in RAID 10. The most promising description is here, but it's a little old and unclear for me, above all i prefer Debian over Ubuntu (i know there are slight or no differences). Is it possible to build RAID 10 with Debian's installer or i need to build RAID 1 first in the installer then use mdadm later? • Fujitsu Siemens V6535 laptop doesn't wake up - crash when going into standby?

  I'm having trouble with my laptop (Fujitsu Siemens model V6535). It runs Windows 7, and after I upgraded from Vista I've noticed something that makes me really angry. When my laptop goes into Standby, the power LED changes to red and starts blinking (standby mode). When I push the power button to wake it up it, the blinking LED changes to green but nothing else happens. Nothing on the display, no HDD sound. When I press the power button for a few seconds and then try turn it on again, it doesn't display anything. I have to unplug the charger, shut it off, and power it on again without the power cable. Then it starts working. A few days ago I upgraded the BIOS to the newest version, but it doesn't help. Does anyone have any idea what can be wrong?

• Only some motherboards can support faster RAM?

  This is a question relating to one of my builds. Here are the specs: ECS P4VXASD2+ V5.0 motherboard Intel P4 Northwood 2.8 GHz (533 MHz FSB, 512 KB L2) 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM Maxtor 300GB IDE HDD 16 MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro AGP OKIA 300W ATX PSU Gigabyte 52x CD-ROM The issue right now is that I'm trying to install Windows XP from the CD drive but the computer randomly restarts partway through installation. My other build was BSODing due to RAM latency errors. This ECS board manual states that memory modules "up to 333 MHz" (i.e. PC2700) is supported. However, I am running PC3200 modules, which is clearly faster than PC2700. Would this be causing the computer from randomly restarting? EDIT 1: I also wanted to mention that my Emachines T2482 is actually running 2x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM when it should only be supporting PC1600 and PC2100 DDR RAM. Yet there are no issues with it.

• Windows 7 setup can not find hard disk

  Previously I had an old Seagate barracuda 160GB HDD which got crashed some days before. Yesterday I bought new Hard Disk Seagate Barracuda 500GB (ST500DM002). I just replaced the 500GB hard disk with 160GB one leaving data and power cable intact and untouched. And ideally this new hard disk should start functioning. I tried to install Windows 7 with DVD the setup says you don't have any hard disks installed on your machine. I rechecked connection tried with Win XP setup but continued receiving same error. Do I need to do some initialization stuff with hard disk before installing setup? If so how to do it. If not then is there any problem with my newly bought hard disk? Thanks In Advance.

• Simple queries occasionally running very slowly

  I have some very simple queries that occasionally run very slowly. The table viewed_sites has about 10 - 20 rows. Running EXPLAIN ANALYZE always gives a runtime of less than 3 milliseconds. When the query is run automatically (every 10 seconds) it occasionally takes over a second to run. The query: INSERT INTO ga.viewed_sites (site_id) VALUES ('gop2') The table: CREATE TABLE viewed_sites ( site_id character varying(4) NOT NULL, last_viewed timestamp with time zone DEFAULT now() NOT NULL ); The (occasional) log result: 2010-05-24 15:47:55 UTC LOG: duration: 1044.632 ms statement: INSERT INTO ga.viewed_sites (site_id) VALUES ('gop2') It's a horribly vague question, but what could be causing this? Recently i moved to Dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu, with a storage partition for all my files where both operating systems could access them. • Click sound from computer when shut down

  Hi, I build my new computer yesterday and I noticed, when computer is shut down, I mean the exact time its looses power from PSU, relativelly loud CLICK sound occurs. Please does anyone knows from where? I think MB, SSD, VGA, CPU nor coolers are not cousing this. I would guess maybe Samsung 1TB HDD (maybe when heads go back to LZ) or some hard safety switch or relay in PSU? Or just the MB speaker? (Yes, its actually installed). • Is it possible create a 4TB bootable partition in the x86 edition of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise?

  I'd like to find out if there is any way to accomplish this, since it would benifit my storage server greatly. I am using a Promise FastTrak 8660 and five Seagate ST31000340NS 1TB drives in a RAID 5 array. I figure that if the x86 ENTERPRISE edition of Server 2003 can handle 64GB of RAM, it should have no problem supporting larger HDD volumes as well. I've read (somewhere...) that the Windows Server operating systems are not limited to the standard 2TB like Windows XP and 2000 are. I'm hoping it's something that just needs to be turned on, similar to the way PAE works for the 4GB RAM limit in x86 servers.

• Is there an easy way to mass-transfer all files between two computers?

  I'm currently visiting my parents for the Christmas holidays, and as I'm sure is the case of many in the post-tech generation, my arrival brings with it the assumption of personal tech support. I've been tasked with setting up my folks' new computer, and they want to make sure all their files, yes, all their files, get transfered over to the new device. Short of manually dragging each folder in the C:/ directory onto an external hard drive and then out onto the recipient computer, is there an easier / faster way to do this?
