• Different methods of ammo resupply

  I'm writing a small game at the moment. Presently, I have one or two design elements that aren't locked down yet, and I wanted to ask for input on one of these. For dramatic effect, the player's character in my game is immobilised, alone and has a supposedly limited amount of ammo for their weapons. However, I would like to periodically resupply the player with ammo (for the purpose of balancing the level of difficulty and to allow the player to continue if they're doing well). I'm trying to think of a method of resupply that's different to the more familiar strategies of making ammo magically appear or having the antagonists drop some when they die. I'd like to emphasise the notion of the player's isolation as much as possible, and finding a way of 'sneaking' ammo to the player without removing too much of that emphasis is basically what I'm trying to think of (it's definitely a valid argument that resupplying the player removes it anyway) I have considered a sort of simple in-game 'store', where kills get you points that you can spend on ammo for your favourite weapon. This might work well, and may also be good for supporting a simple micro-transaction business model within the game. However, you'd have to pause the game often to make purchases, which would interrupt the action, and it works against the notion of isolation. Any thoughts?

• The C++ web stack, is there one?

  Java would be jsps and servlets (or a framework such as Spring) running on the JVM and tomcat (or glassfish etc). C# would be asp and C# running on dot.net framework and IIS ? (I have no experience with this please correct and improve my terminology) Is there an equivalent for C++ ? I could happily call some C++ from a java servlet/controller but was wondering if there are existing frameworks and libraries out there specifically for creating business logic in C++ with a web front end.

• Javascript Implementation Patterns for Server-side MVC Websites

  I'm looking for information on common patterns for initializing and executing Javascript page by page in a "traditional" server-side MVC website architecture. A few months ago, my development team began, but abandoned, a major re-architecture of our company's primary web app, including a full front-end redesign. In the process, there was some debate about the architecture of the Javascript in the current version of the site, and whether it fit into a clear, modern design pattern. Now I've returned to the process of overhauling the front end of this and several other MVC websites (Ruby on Rails and MVC.net) to implement a responsive framework (Bootstrap), and in the process will again need to review then revamp and update a lot of Javascript. These web applications are NOT single-page Javascript applications (in fact, we are ripping out a lot of Ajax) or designed to require a Javascript MVC pattern; these apps are basically brochure, catalog and administrative sites that follow a server-side MVC pattern. The vast majority of the Javascript required is behavioral, pre-built plugins (JQuery and Bootstrap, et al) that execute on specific DOM nodes. I'm going to give a very brief (as brief as I can be) run-down of the current architecture only in order to illustrate the scope and type of paradigm I'm talking about. Hopefully, it will help you understand the nature of the patterns I'm looking for, but I'm not looking for commentary on the specifics of this code. What I've done in the past is relatively straight-forward and easy to maintain, but, as mentioned above, some of the other developers don't like the current architecture. Currently, on document ready, I execute whatever global Javascript needs to occur on every page, and then call a page-specific init function to initialize node-specific functionality, retrieving the init method from a JS object. For common implementation of plugins, I often extend JQuery, so I can easily initialize a plugin with the same options throughout the site. • small IIS web farm-create an Active Directory domain or no?

  We have a smallish web farm of < 5 Windows 2008 servers. Some do data, most do IIS hosting. Is it a good/bad idea to set up a domain controller and put all in the same "production" domain? We want to avoid a world where we have to sync multiple admin passwords between the boxes (or share admin credentials among the team). Presumably, the DC would be just another VM, so hardware cost doesn't enter into the discussion.

• GlassFish Server 3.1.2.2 Maven Coordinates

  GlassFish Server 3.1.2.2 was released a few weeks ago. This micro release fixed a couple of important bugfixes - one in JAX-WS (JAX-WS-1059) and another one related to JK listener with Apache + mod_ajp_proxy (GLASSFISH-18446). This release is already integrated in NetBeans 7.2 and you can download separately from here. Maven coordinates for this build are now also described on the download page. • I can't access phpmyadmin on ubuntu after successfull installation

  I have ready LAMP environment on my amazon Ec2 micro instance(Ubuntu). I have installed phpmyadmin distribution of ubuntu. selected apache2 as the server, then selected 'yes' for 'db-common-config' option. after its completed, I suppose to access it via http://server/phpmyadmin, right? But I can't access it. Is there any way to verify whether its been installed properly and running properly plz? Or do I have to do anything further? Thanks in advance.

• Xubuntu 14.04 resolution low

  I installed Xubuntu 14.04 amd64 on the computer at the computer repair shop where I work, but the screen resolution is way low, like 1024 x 768 (that wouldn't be low for a laptop or anything, but for a large desktop screen it is) I went to the display settings, but the resolution wouldn't go higher than that. When I installed Xubuntu 14.04 i386 at my computer at home, I didn't have any problems with the resolution. Any help? update: I ran lspci | grep VGA and got: 00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] (rev a2)

  Video in VLC or SMplayer is often in black and white with washed-out colors in the wrong place (translated considerably). Moreover, the last video image is often visible when a new video is started and persist as long as the new video is running. Colors have a recognizable shape (e.g. a persons clothes or face), but can be obviously incorrect (e.g. green or purples faces). This is independent of the format of the videos (mp4, mkv, wmv). Sometimes all problems disappear when a new video is started, but often only a reboot restores normal video. Ubuntu was upgraded to 14.04 and is fully updated. • Simple, manageable DNS on EC2?

  I'm working on a large network of servers sitting on EC2, and need a way for the servers to know about each other's locations in the cloud. I thought the simplest way would be to use DNS, because if I replace the EC2 instance, I simply update the DNS record, and the rest of the servers will know about it (with names like users.db.mysoft.com, routing.mysoft.com, cluster1.memcached.mysoft.com). I'm considering setting up a master DNS server on a micro/small instance to accommodate this. I'd preferably need something that's as simple as a key-value store (hostname - IP) into which the platform could remotely add/remove entries. Can I do this with BIND? Or is there a better solution?

• DNSHost.exe trojan found, now after fix, no one can print

  What started today as an inability to get to the internet (but people could get in just fine), morphed to we realized that the DNS Server wasn't working, then we figured out that we had a trojan called DNSHost.exe (spybot.rl I think), and we disabled its service entry and deleted the offending file and all registry keys told to use by the Trend Micro site. Now, we can get on the internet, but the printer being served by this machine (called server2) cannot be printed to from any client machine on the network. We get the error "The RPC Server is unavailable". I'm assuming that this is related to the DNS issue we had earlier, as we were able to print just fine until this fun happiness started this morning. Anyone have any solid suggestions? Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, and the client machine are all Windows XP SP2.

• Oracle and Cavium to work together on Java SE 8 on 64-bit ARMv8

  We have been working for some time on a standard Oracle JDK 8 port to the upcoming introduction of 64-bit servers based on the new ARMv8 micro architecture. At ARM TechCon 2013 in Santa Clara, California, we announced a roadmap with an expected GA in 2015. This project is going very well and is ahead of schedule. We will soon be at the point where we will make binaries available outside of Oracle - first in a managed beta program with select customers/partners, and sometime during the fall of 2014 as a public early access program. Unless something changes, we are looking at a early 2015 GA. We should be able to share a detailed ramp down and GA plan by JavaOne 2014. One of the things we (obviously) need to produce a high-quality port is hardware for development and QA. We are therefore happy to announce that we will be collaborating with Cavium on this project. Cavium has been a supporter of the Java ecosystem for a long time and we have numerous joint customers running various Java versions on Cavium MIPS and ARM-based hardware. Cavium has now agreed to provide us with development hardware and engineering resources so that we can certify and optimize the initial Oracle JDK 8 release on Cavium's ThunderX hardware. This is expected to improve quality and performance of JDK 8 on ARMv8 in general, as well as on Cavium's hardware. • X11 Forwarding works on Windows with Xming and Putty, but not with ssh command line

  I have a micro Amazon instance the I want to use for testing and everything is going fine until the title. If I set up all the info in PuTTy, open it up and run 'xclock', all runs perfectly and it opens on Xming on my local desktop. If, however, I run ssh xxxxxxx.amazonaws.com xclock I get Error: Can't open display: If I run either of ssh xxxxxxx.amazonaws.com -X DISPLAY=localhost:0:0 xclock ssh xxxxxxx.amazonaws.com -Y DISPLAY=localhost:0:0 xclock I get the same again, but just after about a 30 second delay. In .ssh/config in Windows, I do have ForwardX11 yes set, and I really can't think of anything more to get this working. The fact that PuTTy is working perfectly, not no matter what I do on the command line, I get absolutely no joy is driving me crazy. Can I even see the commands PuTTy is running somewhere, to see if it's doing some extra magic? The ssh I'm running in Windows is MinGW32's.

• When following SRP, how should I deal with validating and saving entities?

  I've been reading Clean Code and various online articles about SOLID lately, and the more I read about it, the more I feel like I don't know anything. Let's say I'm building a web application using ASP.NET MVC 3. Let's say I have a UsersController with a Create action like this: public class UsersController : Controller { public ActionResult Create(CreateUserViewModel viewModel) { } } In that action method I want to save a user to the database if the data that was entered is valid. Now, according to the Single Responsibility Principle an object should have a single responsibility, and that responsibility should be entirely encapsulated by the class. All its services should be narrowly aligned with that responsibility. Since validation and saving to the database are two separate responsibilities, I guess I should create to separate class to handle them like this: public class UsersController : Controller { private ICreateUserValidator validator; private IUserService service; public UsersController(ICreateUserValidator validator, IUserService service) { this.validator = validator; this.service= service; } public ActionResult Create(CreateUserViewModel viewModel) { ValidationResult result = validator.IsValid(viewModel); if (result.IsValid) { service.CreateUser(viewModel); return RedirectToAction("Index"); } else { foreach (var errorMessage in result.ErrorMessages) { ModelState.AddModelError(String.Empty, errorMessage); } return View(viewModel); } } } That makes some sense to me, but I'm not at all sure that this is the right way to handle things like this. It is for example entirely possible to pass an invalid instance of CreateUserViewModel to the IUserService class. I know I could use the built in DataAnnotations, but what when they aren't enough? Image that my ICreateUserValidator checks the database to see if there already is another user with the same name... Another option is to let the IUserService take care of the validation like this: public class UserService : IUserService { private ICreateUserValidator validator; public UserService(ICreateUserValidator validator) { this.validator = validator; } public ValidationResult CreateUser(CreateUserViewModel viewModel) { var result = validator.IsValid(viewModel); if (result.IsValid) { // Save the user } return result; } } But I feel I'm violating the Single Responsibility Principle here. • Keeping the camera from going through walls in a first person game in Unity?

  I'm using a modified version of the standard Unity First Person Controller. At the moment when I stand near walls, the camera clips through and lets me see through the wall. I know about camera occlusion and have implemented it in 3rd person games, but I have no clue how I'd accomplish this in a first person game, since the camera doesn't move from the player at all. How do other people accomplish this?

• Authentication system brainstorm

  Hi. We got multiple small websites (microsites) and one main high traffic one with big users base. Right now the requirement is to build authentication system which should allow users to loign with the same identity across the network. All website are running on different domains, powered by Drupal 6 CMS and have separate databases (so sharing tables with prefix is not an option + it creates a huge mess in the db). Here is the set of core requirements I came up with: Users should be able to login with the same credentials to all sites within the network User’s data sharing between Main site (storage) and all micro sites within the network Data synchronization across the network when user changes the data (update email or password for example) The login/registration process should be seamless and consistent Register on any of the sites across the network and use that identity to login later on. In the future there might be a need to add openid authentication options. Basically we are looking at something similar stackexchange does, but not sure if they have central users base on not. I was thinking about custom solution which will include 2 parts (modules), one will be stored on the Main site for users data storing and responding to requests from clients. Second part (module) will be placed on each microsite, which is going to send requests to the Master. Some kind of client - server setup. One of the complications I see right away is #3. Data Synhcronization across the network. I just don't want to reinvent the wheel and maybe some work is already done in this direction. Looking forward to your ideas on how to approach this project.
