• Kaspersky AV is slowing down my connection significantly

  Hi, I'm using Kaspersky AV 2010, and I've noticed recently in Firefox (DownThemAll download manager) that my download speed has been significantly reduced after installing Kaspersky (from 450 kb/s to 30 kb/s!!). I can solve the issue temporarily by pausing protection and then resuming it again. But it's getting frustrating since I have to do this every few hours. Also another issue I have with the AV (which could be related) is that it forces all network traffic to go through it! (Nod32 didnt do that). Any idea what could be causing this? Your help is much appreciated

  just need a quick info on two questions but very related. 1 if we use rds on amazon aws, what happens if some of the machines rds is running on crash? i mean what happens with the data? is it gone? 2 if we use rds on amazon aws via beanstalk, and decide to stop them is the database gone, i mean data, is it gone? thnx a lot, simple yes/no will do, but if you can give more info or a solution to mitigate these issues if any of the answers is unfavorable, that would be great.

• Hyper-V and custom resolution

  I know this question has been asked many times (here and on TechNet), and the answer is usually "use RDP". But apparently, RDP is now the only option, and it's what I'm using. My screen is an LCD TV with a resolution of 1360x768. Unfortunately, this resolution is apparently not supported; the closest I can get in a Windows 8 VM is 1366x768, and it adds scrollbars, which make it difficult to put the mouse in the corners to get at the start screen and charm bar... Smaller resolutions don't fill the screen, so it's also difficult to put the mouse in the corner. Is there a way to set a custom resolution to fit my screen exactly ? (note: I know it's not a Windows 8 problem, since I don't have this problem on my host machine which also runs Windows 8. I assume it's related to the display adapter used by Hyper-V, but there don't seem to be any options to change it)

• What is the difference between sar -B verses sar -W

  I am trying to understand why my system is running slowly. I found the sar command, but wanted to know the difference between sar -B and sar -W I read the man page, and I understand that -B gives me the paging statistics and -W gives me the swapping statistics. What I would like to understand is the following: What is the correlation between the two sets of statistics. When should I be concerned about -B and when about -W? ie, what values from each command should I be concerned with? Which statistic is more closely related to system performance Thanks

  I am getting the following error each time I view JPG files in the windows explorer in Detailed view. Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Assertion failed! I think it is related to some EXIF data that is a date/time. I have tried reinstalling the Visual C++ 2013 and 2008 Run time library and restarting and the problem is still there. • Website not available everywhere

  Today I noticed my website http://mint-nachhilfe.ch/ was down, but other people (located in different networks) said it looks up from there. When I came home, I double-checked, and I can really reach it from here. Also, this website considers it down. Some facts: It's a Tomcat webapp, connected to an Apache2 server. I restarted both, no change. Another (ruby on rails) application is connected to this Apache2, which I couldn't reach either, but is considered online by above check website. At any point, I could directly connect to the Tomcat over http://mint-nachhilfe.ch:8080! I don't know how to go on searching for the root error. I assume it's related to the Apache2 server, but how could that be?

• Openoffice.org: Mouse wheel one row at a time possible?

  I noticed this in Excel, now in OpenOffice.org calc. One small change in mouse wheel leads to 3 rows (line) change. Is it possible to change in Calc OR/AND in Excel? EDIT: Yes, I know about system wide setting about the number of lines for one notch of scroll. But in some applications this setting is interpreted related to size in pixels so scrolling is predictable, but for some like spreadsheet is not. Since the height of line in a cell differ depending of the cell content, with other setting as 1 you will have a guarantee of unpredictable content before your eyes with only one notch.

• Access forbidden! using xampp on macosx 10.5

  I installed xampp back around January 2009, and CF8 to test coldfusion on my macbook (note: I do not think that this issue is related to CF, but only xampp). I only ever used the apache part of xampp, and this was working for over a year. In the last couple of months at the most I've started getting the following error message (even for none CF sites, and non .cfm pages, the error occurs for .html files..): Access forbidden!   I have Windows 7 64bit as my OS + SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. I can connect to SQL Databases (2008), but cannot connect to a SQL 2005 database. I can, however, connect to the 2005 SQL Database on a PC that has Windows XP as the OS and also has SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. So it seems that it works fine on XP but not on Windows 7 (32 or 64bit). is this an Operating System issue? • In Linux, when I use the PS command, why do I see multiple lines for www-data?

  I have a LAMP server that uses ubuntu 9.10, apache2, mysql5 and php5. When I login as root through the shell, I run a "ps aux" command and see something like the following www-data 3151 0.1 4.3 220024 31032 ? S 12:22 0:00 /usr/sbin/apache2 -k start www-data 3153 0.2 3.6 214776 26020 ? S 12:22 0:01 /usr/sbin/apache2 -k start www-data 3162 0.3 5.1 225060 36920 ? Does each line represent an actual user on my website? I run into memory issues at times, so I'm trying to determine if these www-data statistics are related.

• Remapping characters in xmodmap

  I am using a Swedish keyboard, and I want to be able to type braces easier. I planned to map AltGr + å to '}' and AltGr + ä to '{'. However, nothing really changes. I have some other stuff in my .Xmodmap so I know that it gets loaded allright. Here's what I have so far: keycode 35 = slash asciitilde dead_ogonek section dead_ogonek section keycode 49 = asciicircum onehalf keycode 66 = F10 clear Lock keycode 34 = aring Aring braceleft keycode 48 = adiaeresis Adiaeresis braceright where the 2 last lines are the one that should be related to this. What could I be doing wrong?

• bad ram or bad motherboard

  I have a computer which crashes after about 5-45 seconds of operation. It can run memtest86+, and it doesn't display any errors, but it doesn't prevent it from crashing within the time frame listed above. The heat sink appears to be installed correctly, and I don't think it is related to overheating. The motherboard is connected to the ram and a monitor, nothing else is installed. The processor is an atom 330, running memtest86+ 4.0. Any insight into if the ram is bad or if it is the motherboard/psu/cpu? Thanks!

• Does the Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet's Pen have an Eraser?

  I'm thinking about getting one of the cheaper Wacom tablets to start doing some "hobby"-ish digital art. Right now I think the Bamboo tablets are the best choice, especially the Pen only one, but after reading reviews it seems like the pen with the Bamboo pen doesn't have an eraser. Can anyone verify this? If it doesn't include a digital eraser I would consider this an enormous downside. Does the Bamboo Pen & Touch have a pen with an eraser? If it does, I would think about it but honestly I don't want the "touch" part considering how terrible it seems to be compared to a normal trackpad. And finally, are there any new Bamboos or something related coming out in the future? I'd like a pen-only tablet (with an eraser) that's cheap and portable and nothing seems to satisfy yet.   libmcrypt is a powerful encryption library that is very popular with PHP-based applications. However, most Linux distributions do not include it. This causes problems for many users that need to download and compile it separately. I am guessing that the reason it is not shipped is related to encryption or patent issues. However, the source code for library itself is hosted and available on sourceforge.net I have been searching unsuccessfully for a document of authoritative post that explains the exact issues why this extension is not bundled with mainstream distributions. Can anyone provide a pointer to such material or provide an explanation?

SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatability SP2 or higher must be installed. I have installed SQLServer2005_BC_x64.msi from MS, and cant seem to find this SP2 version. SQL server is a 2008 R2 SP1.   Hi all, My query is related to broadband network deployment. I have a DSL modem connection provided by my operator. Now the DSL modem has a built-in NAT and DHCP server, hence it allocates IP addresses to any client devices (laptops, PC, mobile) that connect to it. However, the DSL modem also gets a public IP address X that is provisioned by the operator. My question is Whether this IP address X provisioned by operator is an IP address that is directly on the public Internet? Is it likely (practical scenario) that my broadband operator will put in one more NAT+DHCP server and provide IP addresses to all the modems within his broadband network. In this case, the IP addresses allotted to the modem devices will not be directly on the public Internet. Thanks in advance.

• Too many processes?

  VMware Fusion v3.0.1 One vm for Windows XP, converted and recently expanded the disk size. Mac OS X 10.5.8, 2 x 3 GHz dual-core intel xeon machine. Immediately after booting, and before VMware Fusion is launched, the Activity Monitor shows eight processes associated with "vm". What caught my eye is the duplicates: netifup and dhcpd. I noticed this while trying to re-establish network connectivity after the upgrade to 3.0.1. I am not sure when the network connection was clobbered, so I cannot say it happend during the upgrade. Is eight processes typcial? I expect about six, as listed in other notes and documents on the web site. Could this be related to the failure to connect to the network?

• Troubleshooting intermittantly long 'page loading' problem

  Working off IIS 7 with an asp.net mvc app. Most page accesses are lightening quick. Sometimes the browser reports 'page loading' for an exceptionally long time. We are still in the development/testing mode so it's not a network/bandwidth issue. Happens in both IE and FF. No explicit error conditions in the server logs. If i could reproduce it i could run firebug/fiddler to give more info. As it is, it's a little too infrequent to simply leave both those running hoping for the condition to fire - unless/until that's the only option to get better info. I have a hunch this is client-side jquery/ajax related but only a hunch - don't have enough background in either jQuery or MVC to really know what can go wrong. Any initial troubleshooting suggestions welcome. thx

• If I use openvpn, can vpn servers monitor my usernames/passwords?

  Openvpn uses a type of encryption similar to ssl. This seems to suggest that even if I choose an incredibly shady VPN server, then my content will be secure. That is, the VPN server will be able to monitor what websites I patronize, but not the actual data I transfer. That said, I am not an expert at this type of thing. I wanted, therefore, to make sure that I understand correctly. Is it true that if I use openvpn that my username/passwords are secure, even if the VPN is untrustworthy? If not, why? (And how, if at all, can it be fixed?) Examples of things that I don't know much about that may (or may not! I honestly don't know much about this.) be related to my question are: DNS leakage, IPv6, tracking cookies, browser plugins and websites that don't support https.

• OOM-Killer called every now and then..

  Hello there, i have a dedicated server where i've installed apache2, as well as Rails Passenger. Although i have 2GBs of RAM and most times about 1,5GB is free, there are some random times when i lose ssh and generic connectivity because oom-killer is killing processes. I suppose there is a memory leak but i cannot find out where it comes from. oom-killer kills apache2, mysql, passenger, whatever. Yesterday, i did a "cat syslog | grep -c oom-killer" and got 57 occurences ! It seems that something seriously destroys the memory. Once i reboot, everything comes back to normal. I suspect that it can be related to Passenger, but i'm still trying to figure it out. Can you think of anything else, or do you have anything to suggest that will make the leak identification procedure easier ? (i was even thinking of writing a bash script, to be run with cron for like every 5 minutes).

• Makefile fails to install file correctly, installing HPL

  I started installing HPL a while ago, and had a related question. I've been following along with this guide from Intel. I figure this warrants a whole new one. When I try to make the archive, the output seems fine until the end, where it gives an error. make[2]: Entering directory `/hpl-2.0/src/auxil/intel64' Makefile:47: Make.inc: No such file or directory make[2]: *** No rule to make target `Make.inc'. Stop. make[2]: Leaving directory `/hpl-2.0/src/auxil/intel64' make[1]: *** [build_src] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/hpl-2.0' make: *** [build] Error 2 Going to the directory /hpl-2.0/src/auxil/intel64 shows a file, "Make.inc", but it's highlighted red, and the white text blinks. Is there a way to manually make that file? What do I need to do to get the makefile to do this for me?

• How to block own rpcap traffic where tshark is running?

  Platform :- Fedora 13 32-bit machine RemoteMachine$ ./rpcapd -n ClientMachine$ tshark -w "filename" -i "any interface name" As soon as capture starts without any capture filter, thousands of packets get captured. Rpcapd binds to 2002 port by default and while establishing the connection it sends a randomly chosen port number to the client for further communication. Both client and server machines exchange tcp packets through randomly chosen ports. So, I cannot even specify the capture filter to block this rpcap related tcp traffic. Wireshark & tshark for Windows have an option "Do not capture own Rpcap Traffic" in Remote Settings in Edit Interface Dialog box. But there is no such option in tshark for linux. It will be also better if anyone can tell me how wireshark blocks rpcap traffic....

• Slight delay when switching modes in vim using tmux or screen

  Switching to and from insert mode in Vim is no longer instantaneous since I use tmux. After pressing Esc in insert mode, it takes a noticeable amount of time to actually get out of insert mode. After pressing Esc and any other key afterwards the switch is immediate, and the command for the key pressed after Esc is executed. Any idea what might cause this? The Vim configuration is not the problem as the delay does not occur when I run Vim outside tmux, so this is probably related to tmux somehow. I use gnome-terminal btw. Also worth noting, it seems I can not define key bindings in tmux for Esc, my plan was to bind Esc to: bind Escape send-keys ^[ Alas, it seems binding anything to Esc for tmux does not work. The same problem occurs in screen as well.
