• How to configure machines in a public subnet with two gateways?

  We have a single public /24 subnet, with a BGP router as the primary gateway. Now I'm interested in configuring a second router for redundancy. How do I deal with multiple gateways on the servers in our public subnet? I found some other questions related to multiple gateways that seem to deal with NAT set-ups. In my situation, the servers all have public routed IP-addresses. So from what I can tell, it doesn't really matter which route incoming or outgoing packets take. But I figure the servers need some way of telling when one of the gateways is down, and route around it? Is this accomplished with protocols such as OSPF? And do I need to deploy this on all my servers?

• Disappearing Windows Explorer pinned items

  This has happened twice now in three months: After rebooting, ALL the pinned items from my Windows Explorer taskbar jumplist are gone. Also, recent items from Windows Explorer are much fewer, only one or two if I remember correctly. After the first time I re-pinned the items I wanted, but about a month later it happened again. I re-pinned All other pinned items in other jumplists (e.g. Word) are fine and have never disappeared. Googling for the problem showed that ccleaner can affect this, but I personally do NOT use any cleaners or related progs on this machine. I also think that both times it happened it was after a windows update, although I can't recall what kind of update it was. After each time, Little Registry Editor showed invalid references in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RecentDocs , but I had NOT used it prior to the deletions. Any ideas on why this happens and how to prevent it?

• Ubuntu 9.04 Cannot Connect to visible open wifi ap (reason 6)

  I'm travelling currently so the last network i connected successfully to was my home wpa-psk network. I hadn't tried anything until i got to my accommodation that is an open network (that I'm on now on the Win7 partition on my laptop). The network (and a similar archetypical 'linksys' open network, aswell as some protected local networks are correctly displayed in network-manager and upon selection, it happily spins around to its hearts content for a while before saying 'no chance boy'. /var/log/syslog spills out the usual combination of wpa_supplicant and kernel messages, the most interesting of are that the kernel deauthentication reason 6 response. 6 apparently means class2FrameFromNonAuthStation...Client attempted to transfer data before it was authenticated. Anyone seen anything like this? I've already tried going closer to the router to no avail. I don't remember seeing this any other time I've connected to a open AP, even if that AP is far away. (Signal strength for this AP is good, kismet says its around -57dBm, well above the threshold of -80dBm, and I've tried all the suggestions from the 'Related Questions'

I have a few hints to think that it is not: The "Desktop Effects" will not load Apps such as stardock, when attempting to use OpenGL rendering, will display black boxes instead of transparency In the games Pioneers, the number-tile icons are suspiciously just black circles Windows games running with Wine will only support software rendering, not hardware rendering When I boot into a Knoppix LiveCD, the desktop effects do work, splendidly, meaning compiz detects my computer as capable. My problem with troubleshooting is that Canonical has basically eliminated the conf-file-based mechanism of X11 as far as I can tell, thus making it even harder to ensure graphics modules are loading properly. • Why is Thunar not creating and showing thumbnails of images?

  Thunar is my main file manager. Normally it automatically creates thumbnail images of all images in the directory being viewed. After experimenting with other Linux distros then installing Arch Linux once and for all, Thunar is not showing thumbs. Image files all get the same generic image icon. Googling turned up some information: Something called gvfs needs to be installed. I have it. Still no go. (Apparently this isn't actually needed anyway.) Someone had this problem and fixed it by running some mime-related command (I didn't save any notes) I did this same command but no go. Checking the obvious: in Thunar's Edit/Preferences, yes, the [x] Show thumbnails is turned on. When I view one image in GIMP or EOG, the generic icon in Thunar is replaced by a thumbnail. But only for that one file I opened.

• Can I disable certificate error/warning in Firefox/Chrome/Internet Explorer?

  Exactly as the title says; I don't mind which browser, I just want to type "https://........" and see the page normally without any certificate error, knowing that I might risk myself by allowing an invalid certificate! It seems like every browser producer thinks he knows better than me, the Super User !! =) Now, does anyone know how to remove warning/error related to this? In any of these browsers (Firefox/Chrome/Internet Explorer/[you-may-suggest])? Oh, and don't advise me a workaround like adding to exceptions. Please don't mention that. I'd highly appriciate a concise & precise answer! Edit: The answer I seek concerns ONLY the browser. No third-party objects to be used.

• How to force my laptop to use the discrete GPU?

  My laptop (Asus X7BSV) is stuck using only the integrated GPU. It has a nVidia GT540M as well, but I cannot get it to work. I am using a Windows 7 x64 with latest drivers. This occurred after I attached an external USB monitor I need for work, and since then I cannot swap back to the nVidia GPU (dxdiag for example says that the primary GPU is the Intel integrated one). Asus support asked me to completely reinstall the system, but that is something I do not want to do. I checked the BIOS, there is no option as to what GPU to use. The nVidia card itself is working, since I can use CUDA on it, and it worked with a Ubuntu Live CD. In the nVidia software management I tried setting it to global setting, high performance GPU (nVidia), but that had no impact. What am I missing here? I did uninstall/delete all drivers and software related to the external monitor, but that did not help.

  After 18 years of hosts files on Windows, I was surprised to see this in Windows 7 build 7100: # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself. # 127.0.0.1 localhost # ::1 localhost Does anyone know why this change was introduced? I'm sure there has to be some kind reasoning. And, perhaps more relevantly, are there any other important DNS-related changes in Windows 7? It scares me a little bit to think that something as fundamental as localhost name resolution has changed... makes me think there are other subtle but important changes to the DNS stack in Win7.

  I have a dual-band 802.11n router operating in both frequency bands with the same SSID. My Windows 7 laptop has a dual-band wireless adapter. Is there a way to find out which frequency band is the one currently used by the client? Also, is there a way to set the preffered band? Thanks. EDIT1: The router is Linksys E4200 (V2) and I essentially want to keep the 2.4GHz band in the mixed-mode so that the legacy 802.11g devices can connect while allocating the 5.0GHz band for 802.11n devices.   I have a user who uses Word as his e-mail editor. Often when replying to an e-mail, he'll insert his comments into the body of the original e-mail. Since he is using Word as the editor, these show as [User Name] Comment Text in a contrasting color. However, some users see the comments in their Outlook, and others do not. I've tried Selecting/DeSelecting Word as the e-mail editor on the recipients, and it does not seem to make a difference. We are using Exchange 2007 with Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 clients along with a few Entourage Clients. There does not seem to be a pattern related to which client is used, but Entourage seems to be more likely to have the problem. TIA, Bill

  Hello my dear friends! We have a marvellous squid proxy with dansguardian for filetering and they both work just great. Is there any easy way to limit the total bandwidth usage? I'd like to set the max amount of squid users internet use to 1200 since our total band is 2000 and I need the rest to ensure other services such as voip to work without hiccups related to huge downloads on the "internet side" of our connection and similar issues. • WesternDigital SmartWare - still problematic?

  I've seen a lot of bad press on WD SmartWare (I think it comes on most WD backup devices now, such as their MyBook product line), mostly related to how it's impossible to remove properly or replace. There are allegations (I couldn't tell how true they were) that it has/is a rootkit, as well. Most of the articles are a couple of years old, so I'm wondering if SmartWare is still just as problematic as it was. Does it still have a nasty rootkit reputation and should I just stick with the Windows 7 built-in backup system, or is the current SmartWare generation improved and better behaved?

  I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and attached a Garmin data cable. ") which is okay, as there is currently no data comming in at this port. I am not sure if it is just a different configuration of the system or an driver related problem. How can I track this down further? Unfortunately I can not update the old Ubuntu 11.04 system for different reasons at the moment.

  i have a small network, with one valid IP and a firewall with 3 network interfaces (LAN, WAN, DMZ). I want to enable PAT on this valid IP to redirect http traffic to a server in my DMZ. (done) I want to enable MASQ on this ip from traffic that comes from my LAN (done) I want from my LAN as well to access my http server at DMZ. • 504 Gateway Time-out after php fatal error

  I'm using nginx and php-fpm to develop a symfony2 based website, under ubuntu 12.10 (yes, I know I'm using a beta OS). Everything was working out fine until, due to an error on my code, I called an unexisting function, and got the following: Fatal error: Call to a member function (....) This isn't a problem (it's a bug in my code, easily fixable), but after this, no other page loads. My browser just keeps trying to load the page from the webserver, until nginx timeouts (after +- 30s, which should be some default timeout) and returns: 504 Gateway Time-out Restarting php-fpm solves the issue. Nginx logs show a timeout message, and nothing appears on php-fpm logs, even if I set them to debug level. I tried switching from fpm to fastcgi, and the same thing happens. I've looked around, but all similar error are related to big requests/file handling, which isn't the case. All the pages on my website load in a few seconds, even under development conditions (no caching, etc).

But most of the time, "save as" works fine. Already re-installed the whole Office Suite. It's fine when he does email attachments. This is not related to email. Sequence of events (from client): I create a new document and select SAVE AS I select a file to SAVE AS I create a name ie. If I use netem to introduce some delay tc qdisc change dev eth0 root netem delay 100ms I can clearly see pings taking longer. If I use netem to introduce some packet loss tc qdisc change dev ifb0 root netem loss 50% then I see no change. Packet loss does work fine for locally generated traffic, just not for traffic coming in over the network that's being NATed. Any ideas how to sort this out?

• Alternatives to amavis for RAM-bound server

  I'm running a small VPS server that works as web and mail server. It has only 256MB of RAM, and it's sucking 100MB of swap constantly. I've found that one of the culprits is amavis, taking about 30MB of resident memory, and would like to ditch it and use some alternative. I don't have much mail daily, so it being a bit slower wouldn't be a problem. I'd like to avoid Spamassassin altogether, if possible, because it's quite big even if used in offline mode. I'm already using RBLs and a few small blacklists, and used greylisting for a while but abandoned it because it gave me a few problems (don't remember which; I think it was related to not configuring properly white lists for several big ISPs). So, is there some alternative to amavis that I could use without much RAM (and if possible, CPU) usage? Thanks in advance.
